You may have noticed that the logo features the iconic hockey mask, but with very subtle changes to give it a fresher look. Now, AdWeek has the exclusive first look of the new full design of the man himself, which sports the new mask. The president of Horror Inc., Rob Barsamian, made a statement about their new design, “We strive to maintain Jason’s original essence, while continuing to move toward the future with a defined look and feel that takes Jason into his next chapter. We’re also working with both familiar and fresh franchise voices to strike that balance.” After variations that include a burlap sack, working overalls and a futuristic space suit, it looks as if a “back-to-basics” approach was the name of the game here. Special effects guru Greg Nicotero was said to have been consulted on this redesign. Barsamian explained, “We gave Greg our new 13-hole mask and worked together on this full body look that embodies classic Jason. He’s a strong, towering and terrifying slasher with a machete, his weapon of choice.” With a planned A24 and Peacock Crystal Lake series being developed, Horror, Inc.’s chief marketing officer Sheri Conn, assures fans that Voorhees will be slashing teenagers on the big screen again as well. Conn stated, “We’re listening to fans and actively developing a slate under the Jason Universe banner that spans new movies, gaming, immersive experiences, collectibles and more. Our film franchise is one of the most enduring horror properties in cinematic history, and we’re actively reimagining what the next chapter—and the slasher genre overall—can become.”

Marc Toberoff, Victor Miller, Robert M. Barsamian, and Robert P. Barsamian are currently working with Stuart Manashil, A24, and showrunner Brad Caleb Kane to executive produce the Friday the 13th series Crystal Lake for the Peacock streaming service. That show, which recently signed Linda Cardellini to play Jason’s vengeful mother Pamela Voorhees, is gearing up to go into production.

Netflix’s redesign will start hitting your screens over the course of the next few weeks and months, with one of the ultimate goals being to make your decisions easier and faster. In other words, in theory you won’t be scrolling through hundreds of titles before inevitably settling on The Great British Baking Show as you always do. So how does Netflix plan to do this?

For one, Netflix will utilize a vertical feed in the redesign. This will offer short clips of Netflix programming that you can scroll through in such a fashion, sort of like an Instagram reel or TikTok feed. From there, you can watch, add and share. As Eunice Kim, who serves as Netflix’s chief product officer, explained, “Our current TV experience was built for streaming shows and movies. This one is designed to give us a more flexible canvas now and in the future. We are always going to keep sight of what we think is the best experience for our members, particularly driving discovery and engagement with all of the movies and shows and live events and games that they love. And we believe that the improvements to the member experience will ultimately drive lots of great outcomes for us as well.”

Another element that Netflix will introduce in their redesign comes through a collaboration with OpenAI, the company responsible for ChatGPT. Here’s how that will function: Instead of searching for a movie title or landing at one of their pre-programmed pseudo-genres (Lazy Day Comfort Binges, anyone?), you can type in something along the lines of, “movies that will make me LOL” or “TV shows that my wife will get fed up with and I’ll get the 95” all to myself”. From there, Netflix will find the perfect programming for you – provided they actually have it streaming…This feature, it should be noted, is going to initially only be on iOS.

A few weeks ago, we dropped what turned out to be a bombshell story here on JoBlo. As I wrote previously, almost every DVD manufactured by Warner Bros between 2006-8 is unplayable now. The list of DVDs affected contains many titles that are out of print and nearly impossible to replace, including many classic Hollywood titles, vintage WB cartoons, TV series, and many more. It’s a devastating loss in some ways because one of the appeals of physical media has always been its permanence. When you buy a film digitally, you’re really only buying a long-term license. Physical media was supposed to be different, but now it turns out that discs are very prone to laser rot, where not only will a DVD essentially “go bad” at some point, but there’s nothing you can do about it. You could have a factory-sealed DVD, but it is still affected by laser rot. Basically, if you have a DVD manufactured by WB between 2006-8, it’s an expensive coaster now. The same goes for HD-DVDs, although I doubt anyone is too broken up about that.

Worse than that, it seems Blu-rays are also somewhat prone to laser rot, although not to the same extent, and it’s not as specific an issue – so far. VHS tapes, on the other hand, seem to hold up perfectly well, as do compact discs. Why are DVDs affected? It has something to do with the layering, but at any rate you can learn more about it here. Usually a DVD should hold up just fine, but something went wrong during the manufacture of these dics, which came along at a time when WB was easily the most prolific disc manufactures, as it was around this time that they really opened up their vaults For me, the biggest loss has to be the fact that all the amazing box sets they put out, including most of their famous Film Noir ones, no longer have playable discs. WB has issues many of the titles digitally or through the Warner Archive on Blu-ray, but they’ve also lost the rights to many titles, which are hard to find now.

The silver lining, if there was one, was that Warner Bros reached out to us and promised that they would do right by their customers, promising to replace DVDs when possible, and if the films didn’t happen to be in print, they’d offer customers something of equal value. Here is their official statement:

Warner Bros. Home Entertainment is aware of potential issues affecting select DVD titles manufactured between 2006 – 2008, and the company has been actively working with consumers to replace defective discs. 

Where possible, the defective discs have been replaced with the same title.  However, as some of the affected titles are no longer in print or the rights have expired, consumers have been offered an exchange for a title of like-value.

However, it’s come to my attention that WB has been less than responsive to the many readers who have contacted them via the email address we were given (whv@wbd.com). I’ve received dozens of complaints from readers, while none have contacted me saying they successfully got replacement discs. 

So what’s going on? Was Warner Bros Home Entertainment not serious when they stated they would replace the discs? To be sure, we were NOT the first ones to reveal that there was a problem. This was a known issue in the home media forums for months before we wrote about it. It seems like our story shone a particular light on the issue, subsequently covered by Forbes, Morning Brew, John Campea, and several other big outlets. 

To give WBV a chance to have their say, I reached out to the same contact who sent me their initial response. Here’s the statement I received back (in full):

Warner Bros. Home Entertainment and its customer support partners will respond to all product inquiries.  We appreciate our customers and thank them for their ongoing support. 

So, they maintain they will respond to product inquiries (note they dropped the part about replacing the discs), but the people who have contacted me have said otherwise. At this point, I’d like to open it up to our readers and see if anyone has successfully gotten replacement discs or even an answer from WB. We want to be fair with them, as it’s possible some readers have had success with the company. So please let us know in the comments (or you can email me at chrisbumbray@joblo.com) with your experience.

In a statement, Rockstar wrote of the GTA VI delay, “We are very sorry that this is later than you expected. With every game we have released, the goal has always been to try and exceed your expectations, and Grand Theft Auto VI is no exception. We hope you understand that we need this extra time to deliver at the level of quality you expect and deserve.”

The GTA VI delay is something that many had a feeling was coming, as it seemed especially suspicious that we hadn’t gotten a single clip from the game since the trailer — which hit 90+ million views in just 24 hours — late 2023. Only this year did we get the once-confirmed window of Fall 2025.

While we take the movement of our titles seriously and appreciate the vast and deep global anticipation for Grand Theft Auto VI, we remain steadfast in our commitment to excellence.”

Obviously the news of GTA VI seeing a delay is just about the worst thing fans of the series can hear — hell, the subreddit is even on lockdown right now due to the free fall the news has sent people into. Remember, it’s been 15 years (16 with this stall) since Grand Theft Auto V, so of course we’re all impatient and eager. That said, we all know GTA VI is going to be the game many of us will be locked into for years to come, so we have to have faith that Rockstar is doing this to give gamers the greatest experience possible. Then again, sound reason is sort of out the window for a lot of gamers, who no doubt want to go full Trevor on Rockstar.

Blumhouse’s annual Halfway to Halloween Film Festival will kick off at the end of the month. The studio will be bringing M3GAN, Annabelle, and Ma back to theaters nationwide for one night only over three consecutive weeks. Blumhouse is also joining forces with Meta’s second-screen experience, Movie Mate, to give the festival a high-tech twist. That’s right, you don’t have to put your phone away this time.

“The question we always ask ourselves is why can’t every day be Halloween? So Halfway to Halloween brings us one step closer, and I couldn’t be happier that this year we are going nationwide,” said Jason Blum, Founder and CEO, Blumhouse. “In that same spirit of trying new things, we’re excited to give M3GAN fans an all-new experience in theaters from the team from Meta.“

Fans will be able to interact with the M3GAN chatbot during the screening, which will send them “never-before-seen content, trivia, and behind-the-scenes info on the film in real time.” The screenings are also expected to include “sneak peeks, exclusive recorded messages from directors and talent from the films, and surprise special appearances in select markets.“

But sadly, we all know there are plenty of folks who just can’t help themselves, so maybe this is the screening for them.

Sean S. Cunningham will always be primarily remembered for directing the original Friday the 13th, but he has taken the helm of some other movies that are worth checking out, like 1985’s The New Kids and the deep sea horror film DeepStar Six. The 1989 movie will now be getting a new 4K Blu-ray release, according to Blu-ray.com. Kino Lorber is behind this physical media distribution. The movie stars Taurean Blacque, Nancy Everhard, Greg Evigan, Miguel Ferrer, and Nia Peeples. DeepStar Six is set to hit retailers on June 17.

The Digital Bits has just revealed that Ridley Scott’s historical war epic, Kingdom of Heaven, will be getting a brand-new three-disc Blu-ray set with the movie remastered in 4K UHD. This new release commemorates the 20th anniversary of the film and will be hitting retailers on May 27. Additionally, 20th Century Studios will present a special one-night-only 4K theatrical re-release of Kingdom of Heaven on Wednesday, May 14.

Last year, we included Kingdom of Heaven in our list of five of the best director cuts from Ridley Scott. When Kingdom of Heaven hit theatres in 2004, many thought it was paled next to Gladiator, feeling scattershot and unfinished. The Director’s Cut reinstated forty-five minutes, and the extra running time was crucial. One of the things many people complained about in the original was Orlando Bloom’s turn as the hero, Balian, and in the new cut, his character is fleshed out, with so many great scenes involving him you wonder why Scott ever agreed to trim the movie in the first place. He even (initially) cut the final climactic sword fight between Balian and the movie’s main villain. If you’ve only ever seen the shorter version of the film, do yourself a favour and check it out (as well as the Best Movie You Never Saw episode we did on it!).

Late last year, it was announced that a number of Warner Bros. classics would be making their way onto 4K Blu-ray remaster releases. The titles for this year’s releases included Lethal Weapon, Amadeus, Constantine and David Fincher’s Seven. It would also be announced that a collection of the Sean Connery James Bond films was to be sold in a new set. Blu-ray.com has reported that Warner Bros. Home Entertainment will be making the classic Ian Fleming spy movies available to retailers on June 3.

The description reads,
“Complete your James Bond Collection with this 007: Sean Connery Complete 6-film 4K Collection. All Sean Connery films available for the first time on 4K Blu-ray in a beautiful, limited edition exclusive Steelbook Library Case.”

DR. NO (1962)
Terence Young directs this action feature based on the novels by Ian Fleming. Secret Service agent James Bond (Sean Connery) is sent to Jamaica to investigate the murder of one of his colleagues. Get ready to bust Dixie! Soon, you’ll be able to bring Riggs and Murtaugh home to meet the family as Warner Bros. is releasing a new crisp ultra-high-def transfer of the 1987 Richard Donner classic Lethal Weapon. Last year, Warner Bros. announced the release of the buddy cop pop culture staple along with other studio titles. The original street date looks to have changed as Blu-ray.com is reporting that the new 4K physical media transfer of Lethal Weapon will now be hitting retailers on April 29. The film catapulted Shane Black as his script for this film was a hot property in Hollywood. The movie stars Mel Gibson, Danny Glover, Gary Busey, Mitchell Ryan, and Tom Atkins.

The description reads,
“Following the death of his wife, Los Angeles police detective Martin Riggs (Mel Gibson) becomes reckless and suicidal. When he is reassigned and partnered with Roger Murtaugh (Danny Glover), Riggs immediately clashes with the older officer. Together they uncover a massive drug-trafficking ring. As they encounter increasingly dangerous situations, Riggs and Murtaugh begin to form a bond. Riggs’ volatile behavior might just help them apprehend the criminals — if it doesn’t kill them both first.”

There were no special features reported as of yet, although the former concept art for the package seemed to include a couple of poster replicas, character cards and behind-the-scenes cards. The newly released artwork can now be viewed.

Lethal Weapon is a classic that we love to revisit every now and then, and last year, it made our list of The Best Christmas Action Movies at number 2. Although, it’s very close to our number 1, Die Hard, we still celebrated it by saying, “The film would solidify its holiday classic status by staging the first big gunfight at a Christmas tree lot. Announcements for the next generation of video game consoles are usually made in advance to build hype and get the presales rolling. The Hollywood Reporter is revealing that not only has Nintendo officially announced a new console with the Nintendo Switch 2, but it will also already be hitting retailers sometime in 2025. The legacy video game company has also provided a new image of the upcoming console.

As with every video game console, whether it be Microsoft’s X-Box or Sony’s Playstation, there are usually games that are exclusive to the brand in addition to the games that can be played across every platform. Nintendo will continue to capitalize on its mascots that include the Mario brothers, Donkey Kong, Zelda and the like. The popular titles featuring these characters usually are the next iteration of games like Super Mario Bros., The Legend of Zelda, Mario Kart, Super Smash Bros., Donkey Kong, and more.

It is yet to be determined how much of a jump in technology the Nintendo Switch 2 will have, but it is also reported that the new machine will be able to support the physical and digital versions of games from the original console, which was released in 2017. According to THR, “more details on the Switch 2 will be announced at a premiere event to be held in cities around the world on April 2. The company will also bring the console on a tour around the world for gamers to try it out, with stops in Los Angeles, New York, London, Paris and Tokyo planned.”

Nintendo also released a teaser trailer of the console, which you can view below. The teaser shows a newer aesthetic design for the system itself, which includes a bigger screen and controllers for the handheld mode. Much more detail has been added along with seemingly new hardware capabilities.

According to Stern Pinball’s official press release for the Dungeons & Dragons: The Tyrant’s Eye pinball machine, players are chosen members of the Dragonshield Guild, trying to defeat the dragon queen Tiamat, who is hatching a plan to rise again, triggering the War of Dragons, with Xanathar, Balinor and Sammaster all fighting for power. Players will experience the game’s fantasy world under the glass, fusing pinball with the iconic franchise like never before.

Battle Rath the Relentless, the red dragon, the most advanced animatronic mech in pinball, intelligently reacts to player action with multi-axis motion and features omnidirectional impact sensing technology. Voiced by the iconic Michael Dorn, players will attempt to defeat Rath the Relentless with pinballs and by hitting the 3-bank target, steal its treasure. When Rath the Relentless breathes his magnificent fire, multiple pinballs shoot from its mouth but be prepared. Players can activate a metal shield between the flippers to not only defend against attacks but also assist with playfield shots.

Enjoy mysterious and exciting features by navigating through hidden passageways, experience an electromagnet-powered gelatinous cube that freezes the pinball, and explore dynamic dungeon levels that are accessed through a disappearing playfield trap door. A few years ago, Spooky Pinball LLC created a pinball machine inspired by John Carpenter’s 1978 classic Halloween, and a while back they also built a Texas Chainsaw Massacre pinball machine, inspired by Tobe Hooper’s 1974 classic. Now, they’re continuing their journey through some of the greatest horror movies ever made, as they’ve revealed that their latest pinball machine is inspired by Sam Raimi’s Evil Dead franchise!

Here’s the information: Evil Dead Pinball is a wide body pinball machine set in the world of the first two films of the iconic franchise, The Evil Dead and Evil Dead 2: Dead by Dawn. The players will be guided along by Ash Williams, voiced by Bruce Campbell, as they battle the relentless forces of evil. Ash’s now evil girlfriend Linda (voiced by Lara Sluyter) and Professor Knowby (voiced by Scott Innes) will provide an additional level of Deadite trickery and direction to the game. Evil Dead Pinball is our most ambitious game to date, featuring the highest number of mechs in a Spooky Pinball machine yet. The game also features original clips, speech, and sfx from both films. Evil Dead Pinball is the 4th game by the designer duo “Spooky Luke” and Corwin “Bug” Emery. Written and directed by Raimi, the original The Evil Dead has the following synopsis: Ash, his girlfriend Linda, his sister Cheryl, and couple Scotty and Shelly, drive to a remote cabin in the woods for a fun getaway. While there, they find the Naturom Demonto / Necronomicon Ex-Mortis (aka “The Book of the Dead”), an ancient tome whose text reawakens the dead when read out loud. After unintentionally releasing a flood of evil, the five friends must fight for their lives or become possessed.

The film stars Bruce Campbell, Betsy Baker, Ellen Sandweiss, Hal Delrich, and Sarah York. Campbell’s character Ash would go on to fight a whole lot of these demonic creatures over the decades, as Campbell reprised the role in Evil Dead II, Army of Darkness, and three seasons of the Ash vs. Evil Dead television series. He has also voiced the character for multiple video games and for this new pinball machine.

Stern‘s new The Uncanny X-Men pinball games feature Wolverine, Professor X, Cyclops, Storm, Colossus, Beast, Rogue, Gambit, Nightcrawler, Jean Grey, Bishop, Kitty Pryde, and Magneto, along with a supporting cast of allies and foes. The adventure takes players to familiar X-Men locations, including the Danger Room, Beast’s Lab, the X-Mansion, and Genosha. Players will also interact with fabled X-Men devices like Cerebro and the X-Jet.

The Uncanny X-Men playfield is a unique pinball layout that features an array of new crossing shots and ramp designs with surprising ball trajectories to deliver kinetic satisfaction. The all-new Danger Room design, located to the left of the main flippers, offers a high-risk, high-reward experience that includes a mini-flipper and a novel outlane spinner. The video, posted across Stern’s social media accounts, sees Keanu Reeves saddling up to the John Wick pinball machine at the company’s booth, which also featured Jaws, the 70th Anniversary Premium Edition of Godzilla and more. Reeves looks genuinely interested in the game and proves to be inquisitive throughout his free play, asking the team how much time it took to design the John Wick machine, to which the rep confirmed the time frame was around two years. He also said that 48 minutes of music was used. And while Reeves is genuinely interested in the details and backstory of the John Wick pinball machine, he can’t help but get wrapped up in the game, focusing and screaming, “Look at that! You see that save?!”

Add this moment to the list of viral moments that help make Keanu Reeves one of the coolest guys in the business. Word is that he even signed the John Wick pinball machine he played, no doubt bumping up its retail value well over $9,699. That price is for the Premium Edition, which sits as the mid-ground between the Pro Edition and the more exclusive Limited Edition. The Deluxe Japan Collector’s Edition of Godzilla Minus One mirrors the Japanese version released earlier this year and includes both Godzilla Minus One and Godzilla Minus One/Minus Color. Excited gamers broke the sound barrier this morning during the highly-anticipated Nintendo Direct, an online showcase highlighting upcoming titles for the Nintendo Switch when the family-friendly gaming platform announced Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics—coming to Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4 (and PS5 by extension), and Steam. The collection includes X-Men Children of the Atom, Marvel Super Heroes, X-Men vs. Street Fighter, Marvel Super Heroes vs. Street Fighter, Marvel vs. Capcom Clash of Super Heroes, Marvel vs. Capcom 2, and the beat ’em-up The Punisher.

Fighting game fans have been clamoring for a Marvel vs. Capcom 2 remaster for the past few years. The fact that we’re getting Marvel vs. Capcom 2, plus six other exciting titles, is almost more than some gamers can handle (see the below tweet as evidence). Marvel vs. Capcom 2 features playable characters across Marvel and Capcom properties, bringing characters like Wolverine, Storm, Cyclops, Psylocke, Jill Valentine, Spider-Man, Strider, Megaman, Amingo, SonSon, Ruby Heart, Chun-Li, and more to the arena. I used to play Marvel vs. Capcom 2 religiously on PlayStation 2 with my ridiculous (and competitive) group of friends. B.B. Hood, Blackheart, Chun-Li, Cammy, Captain America, Felicia, Hulk, Ken, Morrigan, Psylocke, Rogue, Sakura, Shuma-Gorath, Spider-Man, and Wolverine were my poison.

Capcom has added new features to the Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics release, including original songs from the arcade releases, development docs, and never-before-seen art. There are also additional training settings, with one-button specials for new players. Online play brings casual, lobby, and ranked matches to the fight. The collection includes a rollback netcode, too, which could be a sign of superb online matchmaking and performance.

While I’m prattling on mostly about Marvel vs. Capcom 2, the other titles in the package bring much value and nostalgia to this anticipated release. Among the list, I’m surprised to see The Punisher included in this collection. It’s been decades since I thought about that game, and revisiting it on modern consoles is an exciting prospect.

Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics will be released later this year for consoles and Steam. Sadly, it does not appear to be coming to Microsoft’s Xbox consoles, much to the dismay of fans.

Whenever the future is depicted in movies, it is generally a dark, depressing dystopian future where something happens in our present that sets forth the collapse of our society. Even Disney is not immune to showing us a future where Earth is no longer inhabitable (the beloved Wall-E). But occasionally, a movie shows a future that doesn’t look so bad—one with self-lacing shoes, 19 Jaws movies and flying cars. Of course, if we are being technical, this movie is also in the past. It’s time for us to hop in our DeLorean, generate the necessary 1.21 Jigowatts and travel to the futuristic world of October 21, 2015, as we take a look at what Back to the Future Part II got right and wrong about the future of technology… from eight years ago!

Coming off the success of the original Back to The Future, writer/ director Robert Zemeckis and writer Bob Gale and Producer Steven Spielberg, knew audiences wanted one thing out of the sequel: to see the future. For some of the technological advances, they had a leg up with emerging technology that was in the early phases while others were flourishes of pure creative genius. So, what radical ideas did the filmmakers successfully predict nearly 35 years ago?

When we first arrive on October 21, 2015, we are treated to a rainy dystopian future that doesn’t look too appealing. Still, when the rain stopped, precisely as Doc Brown predicted it would, the world of 2015 looked like a cool, majestic, hip and, most importantly, futuristic world. 

The idea of bending over to tie your shoes is something so many of us wish we didn’t have to do, so the idea of a shoe that ties itself was something we all wished we had! The question is: did the writers predict where technology was going, or was it sort of a self-fulfilling prophecy? The technology as it exists in the movie isn’t quite what we have in today’s world, but Nike did put out a line of shoes called the Adapt BB that will conform to the wearer’s foot, with some designs even resembling the shoes Marty wore in the film. So I think this is a case of the film being so popular that Nike decided to make it a reality, a reality that will cost you around 500 bucks! 

One thing that the movie didn’t get right was that we sadly never got to Jaws 19. We did get Jaws 2, Jaws 3D and Jaws: The Revenge, but that is where the money train stopped. I guess if you count the numerous home video releases of the first movie, it’s like there were nineteen Jaws films. But even in that miss, the filmmakers got a big thing correct: holographic marketing that looks like it is coming right at you. Marty ducks and covers when a holographic shark comes to bite his head off. In today’s world, if you were walking around Tokyo, you would think Dragons were coming at you, or giant cats just wanted to play. These advertisements look futuristic even in today’s world!

Back in 1985, it seemed like a far-fetched idea that you could use your thumbprint on an electronic device to send a payment, but writer Bob Gale says they did not invent that idea but had seen it in various other science fiction films. In today’s world, not only is using your fingerprint to unlock your portable devices something many of us do but biometrics, using facial ID or thumbprints for other security purposes such as entering your home, has been adopted by many people who see the unique print of their thumb or an ocular scan as more secure than a key.

Even the portable devices in themselves are something the film got right. Today, you no longer have to wait in a mechanics lobby with just the rabbit-eared TV playing Sally Jesse Raphael. We each own our own phones and tablets that allow us to kill time in any way we choose. Go to most restaurants these days, and many waiters will have tablets with card readers right there, so you can pay quickly and be on your way.

Another miss may not be a full-on miss, but when was the last time anyone saw a Texaco station?! In the film, it would appear Texaco is the Gas station of choice for Hill Valley. Still, today, it seems the once giant gas station brand has fallen on some hard times, filing for bankruptcy in 1989 before merging with Chevron in 2001 and is now only in 16 of the 50 states in America.

Once Marty enters the retro Cafe 80s. one of the things that Back to the Future Part II got right that is only now becoming a major issue is the use of Artificial Intelligence. Not long ago, the SAG-Aftra strike was settled after a deal was struck that featured heavy AI protections. Yet in this Cafe ’80s, if you wanted a Pepsi, all you had to do was ask an AI version of Ronald Reagan while ordering a cheeseburger from Michael Jackson. Sure, it was just an AI, a version of a celebrity taking your order at a niche cafe, but where was the world heading? What would AI have looked like in Back To The Future 2023?!

As a kid watching Back To The Future Part II, there were some cool things on display that any of us would have put on our Christmas lists, but the one thing every kid and probably adult wanted was a Hoverboard. To be able to float through the air magically was the envy of all kids. In today’s world, there are things on the market called Hoverboards, but let’s be honest… they don’t hover! They have wheels gliding on the ground as you maintain your balance. So the question is: is this one the film got wrong? Not quite. In the year 2016, just one year after the events of this movie, BBC reported that engineers had discovered a way to make real-life hoverboards by using magnets, semiconductors and the freezing properties of liquid nitrogen, you know, the stuff the T-1000 was made out of! In a video posted to their site, they showed the technology, although on a slightly smaller scale than the skateboard-sized ones seen in the film. Shortly after, a company called Hendo Hover did seem to make a valiant effort to get the technology out to the masses. However, in the seven years since that report, hoverboards have not become a part of our everyday life, but the technology is there, which counts as a win for Back to the Future Part II!

In the future world of 2015. It seemed kids weren’t walking zombies to their phones and tablets as they seemed in the real world. That’s because they are obsessed with their glasses that work as a virtual world with everything from the TV to the Phone right there in front of their eyeballs. The writers got this correct, as Virtual Reality has become a multi-billion dollar market with devices such as the Meta Quest and the Playstation VR2. While the glasses featured in the film function more like a Google Glass-type device, where they are able to watch TV and see incoming calls, there is no doubt that wearable tech was something the writers knew was going to be part of our future.

Once we get to the run-down neighbourhood where Marty and his family live, we see a dog being walked by a drone. While we may not allow our four-legged family members to be walked by Drones just yet, one can’t deny that they are a vital part of our world. Not just in terms of military use, where the US can drop a bomb on a target from thousands of miles away, but also in our filmmaking, with many filmmakers like Michael Bay using Drones to capture some amazing shots while kids can head to their local toy store and pick up their own personal drone to play with.

Inside the McFly home, the McFlys are greeted by a Siri-like voice when they enter their home, while a simple voice command allows them to illuminate their home. While the thought of not having to flick a switch to turn on your lights in 1985 was a far-off idea, in today’s world, it is a feature many of us enjoy with our smart devices while Siri and Alexa greet you however you desire. In the living room, Marty takes part in a business transaction gone wrong on his large flat-screen TV using video-conferencing, which is part of our daily lives in today’s world.

Of course, with as much as they got right in that home, there were a few big misses. First, if you were going to be fired, you probably wouldn’t be fired by receiving ten faxes around your home! I guess in the 80s, fax machines were the next big thing, but that was one technological advancement that stayed in the past. The other big swing and miss was the self-hydrating pizza from Pizza Hut. According to writer Bob Gale, Pizza Hut asked to do a tie-in with the movie, and Gale and Zemeckis thought about what could possibly be the next big advancement past the microwave oven. Miniature food that hydrates in seconds, of course! I think we can chalk that one up to true science fiction, as I don’t believe that technology is even in the research and development stages anywhere in the world!

One thing the filmmakers nearly got right, which truly would have been amazing, given the entire theme of the movie hinges on someone saying they wish they could go back in time and make a sports bet. The Chicago Cubs hadn’t been a great baseball team for a while. They had the longest streak ever without winning the World Series, which in 2015 was 107 years. And then, in the 2015 MLB postseason, it looked like everyone in the world wished they could go back in time and bet on the Cubbies as they entered the postseason as a wild-card team, defeating the Pittsburgh Pirates before taking out the St. Louis Cardinals in the Divisional round. With only four teams remaining, it seemed the Cubs were ready to make history, but sadly, the New York Mets stopped that when they defeated the Cubs in a four game sweep in the Championship series. Although the writers weren’t far off in their prediction as the Cubs would go on to win the World Series the following year, with many people wishing they had their own Sports Almanac in their back pocket.

A line in the film says that the Justice System runs so smoothly now that all lawyers have been abolished. Sadly, that was a big swing and a miss. Lawyers are still all around us, and our justice system is anything but flawless!

Any film set in the future gives their wardrobe department free reign to create outfits they see as futuristic but functional. Back to the Future Part 2 was no exception as they crafted a unique look for Biff and his cronies that in the real world of 2015 wasn’t quite accurate. However, with some of the clothes I have seen people wear, I wouldn’t say they were far off either!

Of course, there are two big things that Back to the Future Part 2 got wrong, and they are the things that nearly all time travel movies get wrong. 

1. Flying Cars
2. Time Travel itself!

Christopher Lloyd has said many iconic lines in his career, but one stands above them all: “Roads, where we’re going, we don’t need roads.” Doc, Marty and Jennifer would then hover above the street as an older/ humbler Biff Tannen looks on with the familiarity of a flying DeLorean. When we emerge from the clouds we are in the future of October 21, 2015, where highways are both on the ground and in the sky. As much as we all may want to imagine a world where we can get in our own vehicle and take to the skies, never having to worry about TSA again, it is just something that isn’t a reality. Granted, the filmmakers didn’t invent the idea of the flying car. That idea has been around for decades, with many of us first being introduced to it with the 1960s cartoons of The Jetsons. But as with all things impossible right now, this tech may soon be a reality as there are several companies working on a flying car. There is the Netherlands Liberty Sport, the Moroni H1, the Alec Model A, and the Klein Vision AirCar, and if you have $770,000 lying around, you could land yourself the Samson Switchblade in 2025. Of course, these “flying cars” seem just to be personal aircraft, like a Cessna, with sleek designs allowing them to drive on the roads. Basically, they all look like The Homer!

And of course, the big miss, the miss in every time travel movie: time travel does not exist… we think! Who is to say that in the future time travel will be invented with very specific rules that if you go back in time, you can not interfere with the people of the present?! You don’t know that isn’t true, do you?! The idea of seeing our own future is as old as time itself, and who wouldn’t want to see where we are 5000 years from now? Or even IF we still are! Many of us would love to take a trip back in time to see the dinosaurs or the signing of the Declaration of Independence or even see our own parents in their teens, which was Bob Gale’s original idea when he thought up the first Back to the Future. He saw a picture of his father in high school and wondered if they would have been friends. That idea spawned one of the greatest trilogies ever made. 

Despite Back to the Future Part 2 now being in our past, the sleek design and innovative tech on display will never get old. It may have taken place over eight years ago. Still, it will forever remain timeless, and that is because despite getting enough right to feel prescient, the filmmakers let their imaginations run wild, and that is why Back to the Future Part 2 will always feel like a distant future we may never see unless we put on our virtual reality glasses while watching our flatscreen TV in our home that welcomes us with an automated voice. 

And I still want my Black & Decker Hydrator so I can make a delicious Pizza Hut Pizza in 2 seconds!

It was heartbreaking when the copyright dispute between original Friday the 13th producer/director Sean S. Cunningham and screenwriter Victor Miller came up and brought any further development of the extremely cool Friday the 13th video game to a screeching halt. Now here’s another franchise video game heartbreaker: the folks at Saber Interactive have announced that they won’t be developing any new content for Evil Dead: The Game, and plans to bring the game to Nintendo Switch have been abandoned.

Here’s the announcement:

No information was given on exactly why Saber had decided to set aside any further development of the game. It would be odd if there are licensing issues, because the rights to the overall Evil Dead franchise seem to be rather clear cut: they’re owned by franchise creator Sam Raimi, producer Rob Tapert, and star Bruce Campbell.

As described by Boss Team Games, Evil Dead: The Game is the blood soaked co-op and PVP experience you’ve been waiting for. Step into the shoes of iconic horror hero Ash Williams (voiced once again by Bruce Campbell himself!) or join up to three of your friends in an over-the-top melee-shooter featuring wild weapons and crazy characters that only Evil Dead could cook up. You can also play as the vile Kandarian Demon and haunt the world in spirit form to terrorize survivors, spawning Deadites and controlling items throughout the environment! You can even possess players and control their characters while they fight to save their souls!

Evil Dead: The Game‘s voice cast includes Bruce Campbell as Ash Williams, Ray Santiago and Dana DeLorenzo from Ash vs. Evil Dead as their characters Pablo and Kelly, Marcus Gilbert as Lord Arthur from Army of Darkness, and Ellen Sandweiss and Richard DeManincor (a.k.a. Hal Delrich) as their characters Cheryl and Scott from the original The Evil Dead, with “special appearances” by The Evil Dead‘s Betsy Baker and Theresa Tilly (a.k.a. Sarah York). Evil Dead II‘s Annie Knowby and Ed Getley, Ash vs. Evil Dead‘s Amanda Fisher and Brock Williams, Evil Dead 2013’s Mia and David, and The Blacksmith from Army of Darkness are also playable characters.

The game is the result of a collaboration between Saber Interactive, Boss Team Games, Renaissance Pictures, STUDIOCANAL, MGM, and Lionsgate.

Deadline reports that actor/comedian Ronny Chieng (Crazy Rich Asians) has been cast in Blumhouse's upcoming techno sci-fi horror-thriller M3GAN from producer James Wan (Mortal Kombat, The Conjuring series), who also has a "story by" credit on the film.

Here's the official synopsis:

Gemma, a brilliant roboticist at a toy company, uses artificial intelligence to develop M3GAN, a life-like doll programmed to be a kid’s greatest companion and a parent’s greatest ally. After unexpectedly gaining custody of her orphaned niece, Gemma enlists the help of the M3GAN prototype – a decision that has unimaginable consequences.

No news on what character Chieng will play, but reports say it will be a significant role.

Meanwhile, M3GAN – directed by Gerard Johnstone and also starring Allison Williams – has no current release date as of yet, but we'll keep you posted!

Oscar-winning actor and Midsommar extra late the pandemic, Jared Leto, is in early talks to star in the Apple TV+ series WeCrashed.

Based on the popular Wondrey podcast WeCrashed: The Rise and Fall of WeWork, the forthcoming adaptation has Crazy Stupid Love and This Is Us directors Glenn Ficarra and John Requa lined up to shoot the series. Individuals close to the project say that Leto is hammering out the details of his involvement now, and to not consider him a part of the mix until an official announcement is issued.

Lee Eisenberg and Drew Crevello will write the series in addition to executive producing. Hosted by David Brown, the podcast series told the tale of WeWork and its founders. The company was valued at $47 billion dollars, it was ready for a huge IPO, and its charismatic CEO Adam Neumann thought it was going to change the world. Adam had a prophet-like vision for WeWork that he sold to some of the world’s savviest investors — but did his vision ever match the company’s reality? (via Deadline) To clarify, WeWork is an American commercial real estate company that specializes in shared workspaces for technology startups.

Leto, who is expected to reprise his role as the Joker for Zack Snyder's Justice League, hasn't appeared on television since playing Jordan Catalano for the Claire Danes-led ABC series My So-Called Life (1994-1995). Despite being labeled one of Hollywood's looser cannons, Leto has a number of projects in the works, including Sony and Marvel's Spider-Man spinoff, Morbius, in which he stars as Dr. Michael Morbius, the Living Vampire. Outside of comic book adaptations, Leto is rumored to be starring alongside Lady Gaga and Adam Driver in Ridley Scott's Gucci, which also has Al Pacino and Jack Huston rumored to star. There's also talk of Leto starring in a sequel to Tron: Legacy, with Garth Evans set to direct.

Since I don’t keep up with current trends (I still own a flip-phone), I wasn’t immediately aware of this new mobile app that’s taking the world by storm (for now)! It’s called HQ Live Trivia, and it’s a live quiz show that can hold 100s of thousands of contestants at a time. What’s unique is that it actually is a live show, and not just a simulation. It is a 15-minute game show hosted by comedian Scott Rogowsky, and broadcasts every weekday from 3 p.m. and 9 p.m. ET, and 9 p.m. ET for weekends. And if you’re late to a game you can only spectate.

There are even cash prizes! You have to make more than $20 (which can sometimes be difficult, as you do have to share the pot if there are multiple winners at the end of a show), but you can cash out in PayPal. Some people have won hundreds of dollars playing this game, which is free to play.

Now, to be fair, this is created by the founders of Vine, so there’s no telling if this will be a start of something new and revolutionary, or if it will be a flash-in-the-pan, ala POKEMON GO! (or, you know, Vine…) However, the live streaming aspect, and the player involvement, is certainly intriguing, and there is indeed hope that social apps like this can gain more traction.
The mass involvement is the key, and we’ll see if this – and other apps like it – can keep it up.

James Cameron doesn’t wait for technology; he invents it and makes a $2.7 billion movie with it. I would trust a man like Cameron, on the cutting edge of technology, knows a thing or two about upcoming trends and whether or now they are here to stay. If you’ve been keeping your ear to the ground as of late, you might have heard about virtual reality and how some people want to be the next step when it comes to filmmaking. Cameron has now made it clear that he’s not one of those people.

Oculus Rift is an upcoming virtual reality head-mounted display recently purchased by Facebook and Cameron who was speaking at the WSJD Live as asked about virtual reality:

There seems to be a lot of excitement around something that, to me, is a yawn, frankly. The question that always occurred to me is, when is it going to be mature, when is it going to be accepted by the public at large, when are people going to start authoring in VR and what will that be?

He didn’t hate on it constantly though, adding it had a “a good price point” and “a good display” but didn’t think it would ever be used in movies:

What will the level of interactivity with the user be other than just ‘I can stand and look around.’ If you want to move through a virtual reality it’s called a video game, it’s been around forever.

Speaking of video games, that’s where this VR belongs if you ask me. Theaters are busy enough, I don’t need this headache now too.
