Last year, Kino Lorber announced the 4K Blu-ray releases of both Adam Sandler breakout comedies, Billy Madison and Happy Gilmore. However, both announcements have not featured much details on what extra content is due to be included with the film. Blu-ray.com has now unveiled a number of new special features for Billy Madison‘s 30th Anniversary release, which include a little over 30 minutes of deleted scenes. The remaster of the film that stars Adam Sandler, Darren McGavin, Bridgette Wilson-Sampras, Bradley Whitford, and Josh Mostel is scheduled to go back to school with retailers on July 29.

The description reads,
“Man-child Billy Madison has been a spoiled rich kid all his life, and spends his days drinking and partying. When his father, hotel magnate Brian, becomes fed up with his son’s irresponsible ways, he issues an ultimatum. Since Billy passed all his schooling thanks to his father’s influence and bribes, he must retake and pass every grade in 24 weeks. Otherwise, the business will be turned over to Brian’s conniving associate, Eric.”

Sinners, Ryan Coogler’s remarkable horror film, has been given an official 4K Blu-ray street date, with the film set to hit shelves on July 22nd. As a nice bonus, it will be featured in a sharp steelbook packaging.

Considering Sinners is one of the best-reviewed films of 2025 so far (we gave it a 9/10 and even Tom Cruise loved it!), this is going to be an immediate pre-order for a lot of us, myself included. As for technical specs, you can expect a stellar presentation that offers native 4K 2160p resolution and Dolby Vision, HDR10 on the visual front, and Dolby Atmos and Dolby TrueHD 7.1 on the audio side.

One additional compelling element to this 4K Blu-ray release of Sinners is that it will have the shifting aspect ratio – which went from 2.76:1 to 1.43:1 in some scenes during the IMAX release – something cinematographer Autumn Durald Arkapaw teased on social media a few weeks ago, thus presenting the film in a way that will duplicate the theatrical experience as best as possible for your home.

Sinners cleaned up at the box office upon release, landing at #1 on Easter weekend with $55.8 million. In its second week, it barely fell, holding the #1 spot and taking in another $45.7 million. It has also yet to fall past the second spot and has now earned just under $300 million at the worldwide box office, which, just as a reminder, is astounding for a movie not based on an IP. That will easily put it in the top 10 for the year; as of now, it trails only A Minecraft Movie, although that movie had people screaming at the screen for very different reasons.

Here is the plot of Sinners if you’ve yet to see it: “Here is the plot for Sinners: “Trying to leave their troubled lives behind, twin brothers (Michael B. Jordan) return to their hometown to start again, only to discover that an even greater evil is waiting to welcome them back.”

Will you be pre-ordering the 4K Blu-ray of Sinners?

Lionsgate Home Entertainment has announced that it will release The Way of the Gun on 4K Ultra HD on June 17th. The action thriller starring Ryan Phillippe and Benicio del Toro was the feature directorial debut of Christopher McQuarrie, who has become the most prolific director of the Mission: Impossible franchise.

The Way of the Gundepicts the fates of petty criminals Parker (Ryan Phillippe) and Longbaugh (Benicio Del Toro). They believe they’ve hit the jackpot when they kidnap a surrogate mother, Robin (Juliette Lewis), on the brink of delivering a wealthy couple’s child. A simple plan, a $15 million payoff…what could go wrong? Everything, it turns out. Robin is carrying the son of a ruthless gangster (Scott Wilson), who dispatches his hit men ― and grizzled righthand man (James Caan) ― to take out Parker and Longbaugh once and for all.

McQuarrie spoke with JoBlo a few years ago when the film was included in our Best Movie You Never Saw series. When asked how The Way of the Gun prepared him for helming the Mission: Impossible movies, McQuarrie said, “The Way of the Gun was the first step in a long and ongoing journey toward my ultimate goal, which is simply one of understanding how to be understood – how to make the audience look where I want, hear what I want, feel what I want. The film taught me that the audience doesn’t work for me. I work for them.

He continued, “The greatest irony is that I never set out to be an action director. I had dreams of making historical dramas like Valkyrie (I still do). Tom Cruise saw The Way of the Gun and recognized instantly my grasp of clarity and geography. Despite its many flaws, despite being an overtly intellectual film that leans heavily on its dialogue, he recognized the visual storyteller buried deep within. The Way of Gun didn’t just prepare me. It got me the gig. And just as I had done for Ryan, Tom did for me: He gave me a better opportunity than anyone else would ever dare and let me run.

Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning will hit theaters on May 23rd. The first reactions have been largely positive, with plenty of praise for the impressive stuntwork, but most felt that the movie was a little too long.

Will you be adding The Way of the Gun to your 4K collection?

Two! Dollars! While the most regarded of John Cusack‘s films with audiences usually gravitates towards Say Anything, 1985’s Better Off Dead has been steadily growing its cult status and seems to be referenced and quoted more often. Despite both movies having Cusack as a lovelorn teenager, Better Off Dead‘s broader, Naked Gun-style of humor certainly has it stand out amongst the many teen comedies of the era.

Blu-ray.com has now reported on the new 40th anniversary edition 4K Blu-ray of Better Off Dead that’s set to release in early August from Paramount Home Media Distribution. While there haven’t been announcements regarding special features, the specs can be seen below. The description reads, “After his girlfriend (Amanda Wyss, NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET) ditches him for a boorish ski jock, Lane (John Cusack, HIGH FIDELITY) decides that suicide is the answer. However, his increasingly inept attempts bring him only more agony, not to mention embarrassment. Filled with the wildest teen nightmares, a family you can’t help but identify with, and a host of extremely comic characters, BETTER OFF DEAD is an essential 80s classic, and a painfully funny teenage tale.”

Better Off Dead is one of two 1985 movies that marked John Cusack’s debut as a leading man. After small roles in Sixteen Candles and Class, Cusack, at only eighteen, nabbed the lead in Rob Reiner’s The Sure Thing, and Savage Steve Holland’s Better Off Dead followed immediately afterward. While Cusack has often praised The Sure Thing and Reiner’s direction, his feelings on Better Off Dead have always been controversial. Holland says that while Cusack attended the dailies, when he saw the cut-together version, he felt humiliated and told him that he would never trust him again as a director. This was problematic as they were in the middle of shooting a follow-up, One Crazy Summer, whose shoot would be more fraught than the collegial Better Off Dead.

So what made Cusack so angryBetter Off Dead is an absurdist comedy that, among other things, includes a Korean drag racer who sounds exactly like Howard Cosell, a claymation interlude, and a plot that treats suicide as “wacky.” It’s strange, but it’s also much loved by fans of eighties cinema, and indeed Cusack has mellowed on it in recent years, trying to downplay his attitude to Holland and appreciating its cult status.

In the wake of Batman and its hit sequels, interestingly, movie studios wouldn’t necessarily snatch up more DC properties to adapt, but they did attempt to bring more classic pulp heroes to the screen with The Rocketeer, The Shadow and 1996’s The Phantom. While there was an animated series just two years prior with the purple-clad character trying to save our dying planet in the future with The Phantom 2040, the feature film with Billy Zane takes its cue more from Indiana Jones-esque action with its 1930s setting and globe-trotting adventure.

Blu-ray.com has reported that the Paramount adaptation of the Lee Falk comic strip is now set to grace your TV screens in crisp ultra-high def 4K with a new Blu-ray from Kino Lorber. The new physical release of the Simon Wincer film, which stars Billy Zane, Kristy Swanson, Treat Williams, Catherine Zeta-Jones, and James Remar, is scheduled to hit retailers sometime later this year. The description reads, “The Phantom, descendant of a line of African superheroes, travels to New York City to thwart a wealthy criminal genius from obtaining three magic skulls which would give him the secret to ultimate power.”

Billy Zane recently declared that Kit Walker aka The Phantom stands as “one of my favorite characters.” But the movie itself was a flop, with the June 7th, 1996 opening weekend finding it opening at #6, despite only one other title that week being a new release. As Zane remembered, “It got a lot of stick early on because it wasn’t edgy at a time when all those movies were going dark. I’ve always held a torch for what I saw as a dying genre, which was adventure. I was raised on adventure, and I think it’s so easily overlooked as how critical it is to young boys and girls.”

This action is what drew Billy Zane to The Phantom, saying, “I really understood the ethos of that, which is why I think I got the role. I just knew it and I was holding a torch for it… and it was a candle in the wind at the time, but then this thing came about, and I was, like, ‘A-ha! At last!’ It was something that would benefit from this weird adoration and fixation on all things Errol Flynn and Tarzan. A happy hero. Go figure! No issues. Well-adjusted. Animal friends. Man cave. Girlfriend. The family business. Life is good!”

Dirty Work was supposed to be the movie that would propel Saturday Night Live’s Norm MacDonald to movie stardom. Sadly, it didn’t work out that way, with the film only earning a modest $10 million theatrically. One of the reasons the movie tanked was that, at the eleventh hour, the studio forced director Bob Saget (yes – THAT Bob Saget) to recut what had been planned as a raunchy R-rated comedy to a PG-13, much more mainstream effort. This was a big mistake as MacDonald wasn’t Adam Sandler, and this mean-spirited movie about petty revenge and scheming was never meant to be a family flick.

Even still, despite the cutdown there were still some pretty funny scenes in the movie, and when it hit VHS and cable, it became a bit of a cult hit. With both MacDonald and Saget having passed away, the good folks at Vinegar Syndrome have undertaken a massive restoration of the film, and have re-assembled the original, unrated cut and are releasing it to 4K Blu-ray Disc this June. The unrated cut only runs one minute longer than the theatrical cut, but it apparently contains a lot of alternate footage, as when Saget made the PG-13 version, he used a lot of alternate takes, jokes, and tame deleted footage for the cut. Thus, the two versions are distinct. As a bonus, there’s also a 2-hour assembly cut of the movie being included, although it was sourced from the best possible elements, which, in this case, is an old VHS transfer. This assembly cut was never meant to be released, so it’s being included as more of a curiosity.

Warner Bros DVDs

A few weeks ago, we dropped what turned out to be a bombshell story here on JoBlo. As I wrote previously, almost every DVD manufactured by Warner Bros between 2006-8 is unplayable now. The list of DVDs affected contains many titles that are out of print and nearly impossible to replace, including many classic Hollywood titles, vintage WB cartoons, TV series, and many more. It’s a devastating loss in some ways because one of the appeals of physical media has always been its permanence. When you buy a film digitally, you’re really only buying a long-term license. Physical media was supposed to be different, but now it turns out that discs are very prone to laser rot, where not only will a DVD essentially “go bad” at some point, but there’s nothing you can do about it. You could have a factory-sealed DVD, but it is still affected by laser rot. Basically, if you have a DVD manufactured by WB between 2006-8, it’s an expensive coaster now. The same goes for HD-DVDs, although I doubt anyone is too broken up about that.

Worse than that, it seems Blu-rays are also somewhat prone to laser rot, although not to the same extent, and it’s not as specific an issue – so far. VHS tapes, on the other hand, seem to hold up perfectly well, as do compact discs. Why are DVDs affected? It has something to do with the layering, but at any rate you can learn more about it here. Usually a DVD should hold up just fine, but something went wrong during the manufacture of these dics, which came along at a time when WB was easily the most prolific disc manufactures, as it was around this time that they really opened up their vaults For me, the biggest loss has to be the fact that all the amazing box sets they put out, including most of their famous Film Noir ones, no longer have playable discs. WB has issues many of the titles digitally or through the Warner Archive on Blu-ray, but they’ve also lost the rights to many titles, which are hard to find now.

The silver lining, if there was one, was that Warner Bros reached out to us and promised that they would do right by their customers, promising to replace DVDs when possible, and if the films didn’t happen to be in print, they’d offer customers something of equal value. Here is their official statement:

Warner Bros. Home Entertainment is aware of potential issues affecting select DVD titles manufactured between 2006 – 2008, and the company has been actively working with consumers to replace defective discs.

Where possible, the defective discs have been replaced with the same title.  However, as some of the affected titles are no longer in print or the rights have expired, consumers have been offered an exchange for a title of like-value.

However, it’s come to my attention that WB has been less than responsive to the many readers who have contacted them via the email address we were given (whv@wbd.com). I’ve received dozens of complaints from readers, while none have contacted me saying they successfully got replacement discs.

So what’s going on? Was Warner Bros Home Entertainment not serious when they stated they would replace the discs? To be sure, we were NOT the first ones to reveal that there was a problem. This was a known issue in the home media forums for months before we wrote about it. It seems like our story shone a particular light on the issue, subsequently covered by Forbes, Morning Brew, John Campea, and several other big outlets.

To give WBV a chance to have their say, I reached out to the same contact who sent me their initial response. Here’s the statement I received back (in full):

Warner Bros. Home Entertainment and its customer support partners will respond to all product inquiries.  We appreciate our customers and thank them for their ongoing support.

So, they maintain they will respond to product inquiries (note they dropped the part about replacing the discs), but the people who have contacted me have said otherwise. At this point, I’d like to open it up to our readers and see if anyone has successfully gotten replacement discs or even an answer from WB. We want to be fair with them, as it’s possible some readers have had success with the company. So please let us know in the comments (or you can email me at chrisbumbray@joblo.com) with your experience.

Before his big breakout, Jim Carrey was primarily known as James Carrey — the consistently hilarious performer on Fox’s comedy sketch show, In Living Color, from Keenan Ivory Wayans. However, 1994 saw Carrey instantly become a household name with not one, not two, but three hit movies that split the sides of audiences across the country, and soon, the world. That kind of output is just not seen, especially as a debut. According to Blu-ray.com, the movie that started it all, Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, is now coming to 4K Blu-ray in a special 2-disc set from Shout Factory.

Tom Shadyac’s 1994 film, which also starred a slightly pre-Friends fame Courtney Cox, along with Sean Young and Udo Kier, is set to hit retailers on July 29. Ace Ventura was such a hit that he became one of those characters that people did impressions of. Reacher star Alan Ritchson even cited the film as an early inspiration. Calling Carrey his hero, Ritchson remembers, “When Ace Ventura came out [in 1994], I was in sixth grade, and I was enamored. He was so physical, goofy and unafraid. I’d never seen anything like it. I dressed up as Ace Ventura for three Halloweens in a row. I showed up to school and wouldn’t break character the entire time. I had the hair, the business card and I would walk up to people at their lunch tables and say, ‘Excuse me, I’d like to ass you a few questions.”

The description reads,
“He’s the best there is. In fact, he’s the only one there is! He’s Ace Ventura: Pet Detective. Jim Carrey (Liar Liar) is on the case to find the Miami Dolphins’ missing mascot and quarterback Dan Marino. He goes eyeball to eyeball with a man-eating shark, stakes out the Miami Dolphins, and woos and wows the ladies. Whether he’s undercover, under fire, or underwater, he always gets his man … or beast!”

Believe it or not, The Rocky Horror Picture Show is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year—and to mark the occasion, Disney has announced a 4K Ultra HD release of the cult classic later in 2025.

With the Walt Disney Studios Restoration team leading the charge, the process of remastering The Rocky Horror Picture Show took ten months. It involved a “meticulous digital scan and preservation process that ensures every frame of the cult classic is presented with unprecedented clarity and vibrancy.” The release will feature a newly mixed Dolby Atmos audio track, bringing enhanced depth and dimension to the soundtrack, but the original mono audio has also been fully restored and will be included.

It’s a privilege to help preserve the legacy of a film that has meant so much to so many,” says Kevin Schaeffer, Director of Restoration & Library Management. “Bringing The Rocky Horror Picture Show to life in 4K allows us to honor its bold, genre-defying spirit and ensure that audiences – both longtime fans and first-time viewers – can experience it as it was originally intended, with stunning picture and sound.

Producer Lou Adler added, “When The Rocky Horror Picture Show was first released, no one thought it would be around very long let alone…50 years. What began as a small, rebellious project has become a global celebration of individuality, community, and creative freedom. This anniversary is a tribute to the fans who kept it alive and kicking all these years.

Directed by Jim Sharman, The Rocky Horror Picture Show is based on the musical play by Richard O’Brien, who also penned the screenplay. With its rock ‘n’ roll soundtrack and cast of crazy characters led by Tim Curry as Dr. Frank-N-Furter, the film has become a cult phenomenon fueled by midnight screenings and audience participation. The film holds the record for the longest-running theatrical release in history as it’s still screened in theaters across the globe.

There’s no official release date yet for the 4K Ultra HD edition of The Rocky Horror Picture Show, but it will be coming later this year in addition to a theatrical release.

criterion july

The Criterion Collection has announced their July 2025 slate of titles, delivering Stanley Kubrick, a film noir classic, an underrated New Hollywood gem, and more. Let’s check out what Criterion has in store:

criterion July 01

First up is Fritz Lang’s The Big Heat (spine #1269), a scorcher of a noir that offers Glenn Ford and femme fatale Gloria Grahame in some of their finest performances (and don’t forget Lee Marvin!). With stellar black and white cinematography by Charles Lang (no relation), The Big Heat stands out in a decade crowded with some of the greatest film noirs ever. Special features include two new commentaries, an archival audio interview with director Lang (co-conducted by Peter Boganovich) and interviews with filmmakers Michael Mann and Martin Scorsese.

criterion July 02

A pleasant addition is 1971’s Carnal Knowledge (spine #1270), one of just three Mike Nichols films featured in the collection. I always considered Carnal Knowledge one of the most underappreciated films to come out of the New Hollywood, with a top-tier Jack Nicholson performance and a turn from Ann-Margret that should have won an Oscar. And who doesn’t like seeing this weird little performances from Art Garfunkel? Special features include a new audio commentary by filmmaker Neil LaBute, a new program centering around Nichols, a new interview with historian Bobbie O’Steen, a 2011 conversation between Nichols and Jason Reitman, and a Q&A with screenwriter Jules Feiffer.

criterion July 03

One of the early Mark Ruffalo standout performances comes in the form of 2000’s You Can Count on Me (spine #1271), where he stars alongside Laura Linney as a brother-sister pair making do in the aftermath of their parents’ death. Special features include an audio commentary with writer/director Kenneth Lonergan as well as new interviews with Lonergan and actors Matthew Broderick, Laura Linney and Mark Ruffalo.

All We Imagine as Light

Rounding out the new additions in Criterion’s July lineup is last year’s All We Imagine as Light, which hit their streaming service, The Criterion Channel, just last month. Special features are slim on this title, with only an interview with director Payal Kapadia.

Barry Lyndon

Leading the 4K upgrades is Stanley Kubrick’s Barry Lyndon, which once stood as one of his most underseen but has, even in the past decade, gone on to be one of his most essential films. While Criterion did a terrific job with the original release back in 2017, that it’s finally hitting 4K to show off some of the most exquisite cinematography you’ll ever find makes it one of the most anticipated home video releases of the year. There are no new special features.

Francois Truffaut

And rounding out Criterion’s July slate is the box set Adventures of Antoine Doinel, which tracks the life, loves and losses of François Truffaut’s signature character. The film includes all four features – The 400 Blows (spine #5), Stolen Kisses (spine #186), Bed and Board (spine #187), and Love on the Run (spine #188) – as well as the 1962 short film Antoine and Colette.

What do you plan on picking up out of The Criterion Collection’s July 2025 releases? Let us know in the comments below!

Speed Racer co-director doesn’t think the film will get a 4K release https://www.joblo.com/speed-racer-4k/ https://www.joblo.com/speed-racer-4k/#respond Wed, 16 Apr 2025 00:28:48 +0000 https://www.joblo.com/?p=836117 Will Speed Racer ever received a 4K release? Sadly, co-director Lilly Wachowski doesn't think it's in the cards for Warner Bros.

Speed Racer, 4K

Although Speed Racer was a box-office failure upon its release over 15 years ago, the film has grown a passionate cult following, with some even calling it an underrated masterpiece. With its kaleidoscope explosion of colours, Speed Racer is just begging for a release on 4K Ultra HD, but co-director Lilly Wachowski told Collider that it doesn’t seem to be in the cards.

The ‘Speed Racer’ fanbase is so rabid that they’re constantly at-ing me on social media and so I actually looked into whether or not Warner Bros. had plans to release ‘Speed Racer’ in 4K,” she said, “and that was a few years ago, and they don’t see the fan base that’s out there for something like that, which is unfortunate. And Warner Bros. is also…who knows what’s going on there. You gotta get at the head of the company.

Speed Racer was shot digitally in the early days of digital filmmaking, so a true 4K remaster is probably out of the question. However, the film would be unbelievable with HDR and Dolby Atmos audio. The film was included in a Warner Bros. survey last year asking which titles fans would want to be released in 4K. A handful of titles from that list, including Lethal Weapon, Se7en, Constantine, Amadeus, and Barry Lyndon, have since received 4K releases (or will soon), so you’ve got to think that the studio will be getting to Speed Racer at some point.

Based on the manga series of the same name created by Tatsuo Yoshida, Speed Racer starred Emilie Hirsch as a young racing prodigy who follows in the footsteps of his apparently deceased brother by racing for his family and their company, Racer Motors. But after he turns down a contract from the owner of Royalton Industries, all hell breaks loose on the racetrack.

Hirsch has been a longtime champion of the film, even expressing confusion when the initial reviews were mixed, but he now feels that the film is finally being appreciated. “When it came out, it was unanimously dogged,” he said. “I remember we were all like, ‘Man, this movie is so good. How come nobody gets it?’ That was sort of our perspective. But then we were also like, ‘Are we the crazy ones?’ Because it’s the public and the critics…So it’s really validating to have everybody come around all these years later.

Would you like to see a 4K release of Speed Racer?

kingdom of heaven

The Digital Bits has just revealed that Ridley Scott’s historical war epic, Kingdom of Heaven, will be getting a brand-new three-disc Blu-ray set with the movie remastered in 4K UHD. This new release commemorates the 20th anniversary of the film and will be hitting retailers on May 27. Additionally, 20th Century Studios will present a special one-night-only 4K theatrical re-release of Kingdom of Heaven on Wednesday, May 14.

Last year, we included Kingdom of Heaven in our list of five of the best director cuts from Ridley Scott. When Kingdom of Heaven hit theatres in 2004, many thought it was paled next to Gladiator, feeling scattershot and unfinished. The Director’s Cut reinstated forty-five minutes, and the extra running time was crucial. One of the things many people complained about in the original was Orlando Bloom’s turn as the hero, Balian, and in the new cut, his character is fleshed out, with so many great scenes involving him you wonder why Scott ever agreed to trim the movie in the first place. He even (initially) cut the final climactic sword fight between Balian and the movie’s main villain. If you’ve only ever seen the shorter version of the film, do yourself a favour and check it out (as well as the Best Movie You Never Saw episode we did on it!).

Last September, the folks at Arrow Video gave the 2009 Friday the 13th a 4K release – and now they’re set to give the same treatment to two earlier entries in the franchise, 1993’s Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday and 2001’s Jason X! Arrow Video will be releasing both of those films on 4K Ultra HD on May 20th, and copies are already available for pre-order on their website. Jason Goes to Hell can be pre-ordered at THIS LINK and Jason X can be pre-ordered HERE. Now, a trailer for Arrow’s 4K remaster of Jason Goes to Hell has dropped online, and you can check that out at the bottom of this article.

Directed by Adam Marcus, who worked on the script with Dean Lorey and Jay Huguely, Jason Goes to Hell has the following description: After dying, coming back, taking Manhattan and dying again, Jason Voorhees is now back as a body snatcher in Jason Goes to Hell, an impossibly fun slice of campy supernatural slasher action! Jason Voorhees is finally dead! Or is he? After being blown to smithereens in a sting operation, the infamous killer’s body is taken to the morgue in Youngstown, Ohio. But Jason can’t be killed so easily, and his stillbeating heart possesses the body of the coroner performing his autopsy. The now body-hopping Jason begins hacking and slashing his way back to his stomping ground of Crystal Lake, where his last living relatives, Diana, her daughter Jessica and her newborn baby Stephanie still reside. Only by them can he be truly killed, and only through them can he be reborn, and Jason is determined to return to full power. Can the last remaining Voorheeses survive long enough to finally send Jason to hell for good? Featuring fan favorite Kane Hodder as Jason and spectacular special effects by industry legends Howard Berger, Robert Kurtzman and Greg Nicotero of KNB EFX Group, Jason Goes to Hell is a madcap entry in one of the most lasting and entertaining franchises of all time!

After a bumpy ride through production, Captain America: Brave New World reached theatres on February 14th – and over the last two months, it has earned about $413 million at the global box office. Now, SuperHeroHype has learned that the film is set to receive a digital release next week, on April 15th, with the 4K UHD, Blu-ray, and DVD release to follow on May 13th.

The film went into production in March of 2023, with filming lasting through June. In December of ’23, another screenwriter was brought onto the project to write new material for reshoots, which seemed to be quite substantial. It was said that the reshoots were primarily done to rework three major action sequences – and this included adding Giancarlo Esposito into the mix as Sidewinder, the leader of the Serpent Society, while also dropping a Serpent Society character that was played by wrestler Seth Rollins.

Here’s the official information on the film, straight from MarvelAnthony Mackie returns as the high-flying hero, who’s officially taken up the mantle of Captain America. Harrison Ford makes his Marvel Cinematic Universe debut as newly-elected U.S. President Thaddeus Ross, a role originated by the late William Hurt. Ross and Sam have a bit of a history: In his previous role as Secretary of State, Ross was responsible for arresting Sam and his fellow Avengers during the events of Captain America: Civil War. Now as president, Ross is eager to work with Sam, hoping to make Captain America an official military position. But that tentative alliance is jeopardized when Sam finds himself in the middle of an international incident, with friend and retired super-soldier Isaiah Bradley (Carl Lumbly) as the prime suspect. Sam’s investigation send him on a dangerous chase, and (leading to) a deadly showdown and a tease of the menacing Red Hulk. Danny Ramirez returns as former Air Force lieutenant Joaquin Torres, who’s picked up Sam’s old wings and taken on the role of Falcon. Tim Blake Nelson is also back as Samuel Sterns, AKA The Leader, appearing in the MCU for the first time since 2008’s The Incredible Hulk. New to the cast is Shira Haas, who joins as Ruth Bat-Seraph. A former Black Widow, Ruth is now a high-ranking U.S. government official who has the trust of President Ross. Giancarlo Esposito, Liv Tyler, and Xosha Roquemore also star. The film is directed by Julius Onah and produced by Kevin Feige and Nate Moore. Louis D’Esposito and Charles Newirth serve as executive producers. Malcolm Spellman, Dalan Musson, and Rob Edwards crafted the story for the film. Onah receives screenplay credit alongside Peter Glanz and Matthew Orton (Orton being the writer who was brought on for the reshoots).

As mentioned, the digital release of Captain America: Brave New World will be available to watch on platforms like Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV, and Fandango at Home as of April 15th, with the physical media release following on May 13th. The film comes to home video with the following special features: – Deleted Scenes: A Heartfelt Thanks (President Ross praises Agent Taylor for her actions). The Mission (Sam Wilson tries to extract information out of Agent Taylor in the boxing ring). Stick Around (President Ross extends an apology and an unexpected invitation to Isaiah).

– Assuming the Mantle – Ever since his high-flying debut in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, audiences around the world have known that Sam Wilson was destined for great things. Join the cast and crew as they look at Sam’s past, present, and potential future in the MCU.

– Old Scores, New Scars – Brave New World finds Captain America locked in a battle of brains and brawn in the forms of The Leader, Red Hulk, and Sidewinder. From prosthetics to visual effects to stunt work, get the lowdown on these formidable foes and how they’re brought to life.

– Gag Reel – Enjoy some hilarious outtakes on set with the cast and crew of Captain America: Brave New World

– Audio Commentary – Listen to Director Julius Onah and Director of Photography Kramer Morgenthau talk about the film

It doesn’t look like the original Serpent Society footage will be making its way onto the discs, which is a shame, but not surprising. Here’s one of the deleted scenes:

Last year, Warner Bros. / New Line Cinema celebrated the 40th anniversary of the Wes Craven-directed classic A Nightmare on Elm Street by giving the film a 4K UHD release. There have been rumblings that they’re planning to follow up that release with a Nightmare on Elm Street franchise 4K UHD box set sometime this year – and while such a set hasn’t been officially announced, there are promising signs that it’s actually happening. Six months ago, Freddy’s Dead: The Final Nightmare director Rachel Talalay revealed on social media that she had been working on “regrading” that film. Now, A Nightmare on Elm Street Part 2: Freddy’s Revenge director Jack Sholder has confirmed that he’s working on a 4K remaster of his movie as well!

Sholder wrote on Facebook, “I just spent last week on the Warners lot working on the restoration of Nightmare on Elm Street 2. The remastered 4K picture off the original 35mm negative looks fantastic, and I was able to make adjustments and corrections only possible thanks to the incredible digital tools now available. The original mono mix from 42 years ago(!) was brought into Dolby Atmos and blew me out of my seat. I heard things in Chris Young’s score I never knew were there and that, combined with some added sound fx work, really lift the film into another dimension. We were careful not to change the look and feel of the film, but even the rather lame scene with the exploding parakeet felt like The Birds. The whole experience was like someone restoring an old Renaissance painting and finally seeing the amazing blue that the painter had used, or the cat now seen hiding behind the table, although in this case, those colors and sounds had never fully been seen before but were implicit in the material and now are explicit. Warners also shot some interviews for the new release and I got to see my old buddy Robert Englund whose performance now jumps off the screen. Keep an eye out for announcements of the release from WB. The new version really needs to be experienced by new fans and re-experienced by old ones.

Talalay previously said this about working on Freddy’s Dead: “Regrading a movie from 30 years ago is an exercise in being punched in the face by every rookie mistake – with the rare, occasional ‘That was good.’ New 3D is a revelation, though.

Are you glad to hear that remasters of Freddy’s Dead: The Final Nightmare and A Nightmare on Elm Street Part 2: Freddy’s Revenge (and, we hope, the other sequels) are in the works? Would you like to add a 4K A Nightmare on Elm Street box set to your collection? Let us know by leaving a comment below.

Get ready to bust Dixie! Soon, you’ll be able to bring Riggs and Murtaugh home to meet the family as Warner Bros. is releasing a new crisp ultra-high-def transfer of the 1987 Richard Donner classic Lethal Weapon. Last year, Warner Bros. announced the release of the buddy cop pop culture staple along with other studio titles. The original street date looks to have changed as Blu-ray.com is reporting that the new 4K physical media transfer of Lethal Weapon will now be hitting retailers on April 29. The film catapulted Shane Black as his script for this film was a hot property in Hollywood. The movie stars Mel Gibson, Danny Glover, Gary Busey, Mitchell Ryan, and Tom Atkins.

The description reads,
“Following the death of his wife, Los Angeles police detective Martin Riggs (Mel Gibson) becomes reckless and suicidal. When he is reassigned and partnered with Roger Murtaugh (Danny Glover), Riggs immediately clashes with the older officer. Together they uncover a massive drug-trafficking ring. As they encounter increasingly dangerous situations, Riggs and Murtaugh begin to form a bond. Riggs’ volatile behavior might just help them apprehend the criminals — if it doesn’t kill them both first.”

There were no special features reported as of yet, although the former concept art for the package seemed to include a couple of poster replicas, character cards and behind-the-scenes cards. The newly released artwork can now be viewed.

Lethal Weapon is a classic that we love to revisit every now and then, and last year, it made our list of The Best Christmas Action Movies at number 2. Although, it’s very close to our number 1, Die Hard, we still celebrated it by saying, “The film would solidify its holiday classic status by staging the first big gunfight at a Christmas tree lot. Nothing gets us in the holiday spirit like some bad guys getting their comeuppance. Of course, as this is an L.A.-based film, we don’t get any snow to give you that cold holiday season feeling, but occasionally, a Christmas tree and lights will pop up to remind you when the movie was set. The film ends with a pile of dead bad guys, a lovely Christmas meal for Riggs and his new surrogate family, and Elvis singing, ‘I’ll be home for Christmas.'”

In recent weeks, we here at JoBlo have written some wild stories about how physical media has sometimes fallen flat with consumers. The idea with physical media was always that, in an era where many people own things digitally (which they don’t really own at all), having a film on Blu-ray meant that it would always be yours. However, collectors have been somewhat shaken up lately by the spectre of laser rot, where, after a certain time, discs simply go bad, regardless of whether you play them or not. As I previously revealed, pretty much every DVD (and HD-DVD) Warner Bros manufactured between 2006-8 fell prey to this, and our own Tyler Nichols followed-up with his own piece, listing hundreds of Blu-ray’s which have always gone bad – for whatever reason.

However, as Tyler notes, in many cases, especially when a disc comes from a specialty label, they’ll do everything they can to replace a defective disc. In fact, even WB has gone on record saying they would replace discs, no matter how old they are (although several readers have reached out to me saying that WB is taking a lot of time to get back to them). Criterion has been especially good at replacing discs that no longer work, and I imagine the same would go for any 4K specialty label, although so far, their discs all seem to work just fine.

With that in mind, we want to celebrate some of our favourite specialty labels. Mine is probably Arrow Video, which is like the Criterion Collection of genre films, but there are plenty of great ones to choose from. Take our poll below and let us know!

Prom Night 3

Last year, Synapse Films and Red Shirt Home Video teamed up to bring us a deluxe edition Blu-ray and 4K UHD release of the 1986 rock ‘n roll horror film Trick or Treat, one of my all-time favorite movies. Now, they’re working on several follow-up projects, including a 4K UHD and Blu-ray release of Fright Night Part 2 – and a deluxe edition 4K UHD and Blu-ray release of Hello Mary Lou: Prom Night II! Red Shirt’s Michael Felsher announced the Prom Night II project on social media, where he also revealed that Blu-ray releases of Prom Night III: The Last Kiss and Prom Night IV: Deliver Us from Evil are in the works. Whether or not the other sequels get 4K upgrades will depend on what materials are available for them. Synapse does have the rights required to bring the original Prom Night to 4K UHD as well, but that “depends on access to (and quality of) the elements.”

Felsher said, “That’s right, Hello Mary Lou: Prom Night II, coming to UHD and Blu-ray from Red Shirt Home Video, after all this time. This one has been a huge title for a lot of people, this is one everyone has wanted for a very long time, including myself. It’s my favorite of the Prom Night movies and it is one that has been sorely underrepresented on the home video market for a very long time. The last time it was available, that anyone really noticed, was on MGM’s DVD and then it did get a couple of multi-pack releases through another company after that, but it has been off the market since then, and we have now closed the deal to release Hello Mary Lou: Prom Night II, and this one will be getting the Trick or Treat treatment. … I’m gonna do a full ‘making of’ piece. If I did it for Trick or Treat, you can imagine that I’m gonna want to do everything I can possibly do for Hello Mary Lou, because this is a really, really cool movie.” Red Shirt will be reaching out to everyone they can think of to interview about the film, and an interview with cast member Michael Ironside is already set up. They’re also hoping to dig up a cut of the movie that was put together before the decision to release it as a Prom Night sequel, but might not be able to.

Although a DVD release of Prom Night III: The Last Kiss from a different company was a censored cut, Red Shirt and Synapse will not be making that mistake when they bring the film to Blu-ray. Felsher has already spoken to one of the film’s two directors and confirmed his involvement with this release. A lot of the same people worked on all four of the initial Prom Night films, so Felsher will be talking to them about each of the sequels.

It’s not clear if there’s going to be a Prom Night box set from Synapse when all is said and done, especially since Felsher doesn’t want to hold up the release of Hello Mary Lou: Prom Night II just to wait for a group box set. This series might be released one-by-one over time.

Also in the works at Synapse Films and Red Shirt Home Video are a 4K and Blu-ray release of the 1986 film Hunter’s Blood, a 4K and Blu-ray release of 976-Evil II, and a Blu-ray of the 1983 Marilyn Chambers sci-fi comedy Angel of H.E.A.T.

Are you glad to hear that Hello Mary Lou: Prom Night II is getting a deluxe edition 4K and Blu-ray release? Fright Night Part 2

Last year, Synapse Films and Red Shirt Home Video teamed up to bring us a deluxe edition Blu-ray and 4K UHD release of the 1986 rock ‘n roll horror film Trick or Treat, one of my all-time favorite movies. Now Synapse and Red Shirt have announced that they’ll also be giving the deluxe edition treatment to the 1988 vampire sequel Fright Night Part 2! A lot of fans have resorted to buying bootlegs just to have a good copy of this movie on DVD, but now it’s getting an official 4K UHD and Blu-ray release. According to Red Shirt’s Michael Felsher, it’s likely to be released sometime in 2026.

Directed by Tommy Lee Wallace, who takes over from the first film’s Tom Holland, and scripted by Tim Metcalfe, Miguel Tejada-Flores, and Wallace, Fright Night Part 2 features young Charley Brewer, fresh out of a psychiatric hospital, and the vampire hunting former TV show host Peter Vincent, facing more thirsty vampires. Three years after dealing with vampires, Charley Brewster separates from vampire hunter Peter Vincent. When mysterious actress Regine Dandrige arrives in town, Charley’s past resurfaces, suggesting a repeat occurrence involving vampires. The film stars William Ragsdale and Roddy McDowell, reprising the roles they made famous in the first film, alongside Traci Lind, Julie Carmen, Jon Gries, and Brian Thompson.

Felsher said, “We have got the original negative, we are going to be getting everybody and anyone we possibly can involved. This one took a Herculean amount of work to get cleared up, but Tommy Lee Wallace is on board, the original producer is on board, I’ve even spoken to Tom Holland, he’s gonna contribute to the documentary to talk about not so much this movie but all the Fright Night sequels that didn’t happen but could have happened. … There’s a lot to do for it. I definitely would love to get the DP, Mark Irwin, in to do the color grading on the transfer so it will look exactly the way it was supposed to.” The deal for this release was just finalized a few days ago.
