George Lucas

Zombies Ate My Neighbors might be the greatest horror video game ever. It’s not scary in the traditional sense but no other game better played off of our favorite horror tropes and characters – all without getting slapped with an insane amount of lawsuits. Those evil dolls? Yeah, they’re Chucky. That chainsaw-wielding dude in the hockey mask? Yup, that’s Jason, even though Mrs. Voorhees’ baby boy never used one. From there, we’ve got vampires, werewolves, reptilian men, aliens, giant creatures, pod people, blobs, and more running around neighborhoods, shopping malls, factories, pyramids, castles, and anywhere else you’ve already seen in classic horror flicks. But one figure that pops up at random isn’t exactly known for horror flicks – and that’s George Lucas, whose LucasArts developed the game.

A lot of people don’t know this, but George Lucas actually has a cameo in Zombies Ate My Neighbors, appearing in the level “Monsters Among Us”, categorized as a “credit level” as it’s revealed only after you defeat the game’s final boss, Dr. Tongue. But there he is, as this level is set in the offices of LucasArts, the company that developed Zombies Ate My Neighbors. So why don’t more people know about this cameo? Well, because the game is insanely hard! Heck, I’ve played the game off and on since Konami released it back in 1993 and still haven’t conquered it without codes (damn you, Snakeoids!). While I did come across the level through roms and discovered the cameo years ago, we have to give credit to Laser Time for giving us proof.

Unfortunately for some, you can’t use your water pistol, weed-whacker or magical crucifix against Lucas, as he is just part of the scenery and – as in real life, probably – unkillable. So what is he up to? After you save the tourists snapping pictures of him, he tells the characters, “Welcome to LucasArts Games and now get back to work.”

Getting back to work not only entails saving your neighbors but also taking time to scope out everything and everybody within the walls, which are covered in cobwebs. Taking a walk around, we see assistant animators, musicians (Joe McDermott and George Sanger), artists (key LucasArts figure and later Pixar employee Steve Purcell), and even the head of LucasArts Kelly Flock – no, literally, it’s his giant floating head watching over the studio! One employee even has his own head on the body of a dog, a little nod to 1978’s Invasion of the Body Snatchers. With all of that going on — especially in a level that most people will never play — you have to appreciate the (dr.) tongue-in-cheek devotion.

Did you play Zombies Ate My Neighbors? How far did you make it?

Even while 2016’s Resident Evil: The Final Chapter was in theaters, it was announced that the series would be getting a film reboot. The newly released Resident Evil: Welcome To Raccoon City delivers on that promise. It takes the franchise from the hyper-action sci-fi series we’re used to and returns it back to its horror roots. The team behind the film also loaded it up with a ton of Resident Evil Easter eggs gamers love to see but that average film goers may have missed.

Warning! There will be spoilers going forward!

Zombie Dog

Resident Evil Zombie Dog

In the video game series, gamers had to contend with zombie dogs. They were Dobermans that had been infected with the T-Virus and had become grotesque feral zombie dogs that were hard to fight off. In the film, we see early on that Claire Redfield has come back to Raccoon City by way of hitchhiking. She has caught a ride with a lecherous truck driver who has a Doberman as his riding companion.

A woman wanders out into the road and gets hit by the trucker. They jump out of the truck to figure out what to do only to have the woman disappear while they are arguing. The trucker’s dog jumps out and begins to lick up the blood and goop left behind by the woman. After a few more scenes we see that the dog has become infected and bites its owner. Later the dog ends up chasing down some characters at the police station and by now has started to rot away as it becomes more vicious.

Itchy Tasty

Itchy Tasty Woman

In Resident Evil: Welcome To Raccoon City, while Claire is breaking into her brother’s house she sees the neighbor boy in the window, and he is obviously sick, hinting at one of the more abstract Easter eggs. His hair has become stringy and begun to fall out. The child’s mother walks up to the window and closes the curtains. Before she does, we notice she also seems to be suffering from the same ailment.

Later, Claire looks up to see the mother writing the words “ITCHY TASTY” on the door window in blood. In the original Resident Evil game, you stumble upon The Keeper’s Journal. If you read through it the entries begin to get shorter as the language of the infected person begins to break down. The last entry in the journal simply reads “Itchy. Tasty”.

First Aid Spray

Umbrella First Aid Spray

In the games, a vital item to survive through each level is the trusty First Aid Spray. Gotta keep that health bar up. We don’t get to see anyone in the film pull out an aerosol can of First Aid Spray and heal all their wounds. The Umbrella Corporation wants you to think that it could be possible though.

During the first scene of the film at the Raccoon City Orphanage, a print advertisement showcases the First Aid Spray from Umbrella. The artwork for the item looks just like gamers remember it from the game. It’s too bad we didn’t get a scene of Jill Valentine grabbing a can to help her cuts and scrapes go away.

Orphanage Artwork

Resident Evil Orphanage

The set design team did a terrific job in Resident Evil: Welcome To Raccoon City. They got blueprints from the game designers to help create some of the sets in the film to make them as accurate as possible. One big piece that looks identical to the game is the gates leading into the orphanage. The front is covered in colorful artwork to make it seem like a happy magical place, even though what is going on inside is anything but.

In the Resident Evil 2 remake from 2018, they added this design element into the game and the filmmakers took that and put it directly into the movie. When we see the location a large cartoon raccoon and what looks like an oddly colored giraffe adorn the front gates while the colorful lettering let us know we’re at the orphanage.

How Would You Rather Die?

Resident Evil Giant Snake

When we first meet Wesker, Jill Valentine, and the rest of the S.T.A.R.S. team they are at the local diner grabbing some food before they head off to their late shift at the police station. During their conversations, Jill just throws out a general question. How would you like to die? Swallowed whole by a giant snake or eaten by a great white shark?

Game fans will know this refers to different endings of the original game. Depending on the scenario you decide to take the character of Richard Aiken can either end up swallowed by a giant snake or eaten alive by a T-Virus infected great white shark.

Card Keys

Spade Card Key

Towards the end of the film. Claire and Leon are searching for a hidden passageway from the orphanage to the Spencer Mansion. With the help of the only resident left in the orphanage Lisa Trevor, they find a set of keys. Each key has a different head on them depicting a suit from a deck of playing cards.

If you’re not a gamer, then the keys may seem weird. Why these specific keys are designed like this is never mentioned or even brought up again. Fans of the Resident Evil 2 game will know that in order to get around to different parts of the map you have to find coded keys that are designed like the suits in a deck of cards.

Mansion Plants

Resident Evil Herbs

Along with First Aid Spray, herbs are the best way to stay healthy in the original game. You’ll be fighting off a zombie and noticed in the corner of the room is a potted herb plant. You pick it up to keep the adventure going. If you were looking at the background of the mansion during the film, you may have seen some familiar-looking plants. The sprawling set had a lot of cool design things going on. When it came to the plants around the mansion the design team specifically mimicked the look of the herbs.

Palm Pilot Map

Resident Evil Maps

At the beginning of the movie, we see that the film is set on September 30, 1998. One character ends up getting information sent to him by way of a Palm Pilot. They of course let him know that they had put it in his locker by way of his super new text beeper. Once he grabs it and starts walking around the Spencer mansion we see that it has a map layout of where he needs to go to find the hidden lab. This map looks a lot like the level map you could bring up in the game.

Hunk

Resident Evil Hunk

In the Resident Evil 2 game, you were able to unlock a new mode called “The 4th Survivor“. You play an agent named Hunk. In this mode, you tried to escape Raccoon City before its destruction with limited ammo and limited health supplies. His appearance of wearing all black including a black gas mask gave him a very Boba Fett quality. It’s never confirmed that it’s actually Agent Hunk, we do get to see a character in his usual getup.

The Umbrella Corporation begins to lock down Raccoon City after the outbreak starts. In order to keep citizens in the city, guards are located at every exit in town. When Donal Logue’s character of Chief Irons tries to get out of the city he ends up running across one of these guards at one of the stops. He seems very familiar to Resident Evil game fans everywhere, and was likely one of the more exciting Easter eggs.

Wesker’s Sunglasses

Wesker Sunglasses

The character of Wesker is known for being super cool. At least that’s what we’re supposed to take away from the fact that he wears sunglasses all the time in the game. After Wesker is dispatched in the film by Valentine, we thought we were never going to see him sporting those shades at all. When the film is over, we are treated to a post-credits scene where Wesker wakes up in a body bag. While trying to figure out where he is and what is going on the character of Ada Wong appears. She informs him that he died but has been brought back to life. When he says he can’t see she hands him a pair of dark sunglasses. It’s a side effect of the virus. If Resident Evil: Welcome To Raccoon City gets a sequel, we’re guaranteed to see Wesker in his famous sunglasses.

Over the last few months, we have been hitting you guys with a seemingly endless stream of articles based around the new FRIDAY THE 13TH: THE GAME from Gun Media. We have reported on all things F13 The Game, including our last post on NES Jason being added to the game.

Now while we want to calm down on FRIDAY THE 13TH: THE GAME news a bit around here – to make room for hopefully the teased CHILD'S PLAY video game? – the massive bit of news that still holds a ton of our interests is when the game will allow for single-player mode.

This is what I'm REALLY looking forward to.

It's not that I don't have any friends (I don't) but I just enjoy playing games by myself, and not with f*cking Bryan eating all my potato chips.

Anyhow, we learned a while back that Gun Media planned to release a single-player mode for the game later this summer. And while there is still no release date set in stone, today we learned a bit more about what we can expect to see once the new mode hits.

One of the game's developers, Wes Keltner took to Twitter recently and gave us a slight idea of what to expect from the upcoming single-player mode. More specifically, when and how the game will depart from the current multi-player mode.

Again this isn't a HUGE amount of info to go on, but if nothing else, it's a reminder that the guys over at Gun Media are still working on giving us our single-player mode. Which makes me happier than hell, because I f*cking know goddamn Bryan isn't going to be able to keep stealing Tommy's shotgun from me.

Are you excited about playing FRIDAY THE 13TH: THE GAME all by your lonesome? Let us know what you think of the game so far on Facebook, Twitter, and/or Instagram!

Again, the single-player mode is set to hit sometime this summer.

How bad do you want A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET: THE GAME now?

I have been a big DEAD ISLAND fan since I first saw that amazing reverse-action trailer (which you can re-peep below) that dropped years ago now. I'm not even one for playing video games, but I had to check out that game asap after I watched the trailer until my eyes bled.

DEAD ISLAND was a success, but there still has yet to be a sequel to the game. News has been slow on the DEAD ISLAND 2 front. In fact, the last time we here at AITH reported on the sequel it was back in April of 2015. And even then the news was merely about the game being delayed.

Today we have news that the game is still in development. Deep Silver recently gave Eurogamer and an update on Dead Island 2.

Dead Island 2 is in development at Sumo Digital, and we are excited by the progress the team are making with Deep Silver's most successful IP. When we are ready to share more information, we will."

While that isn't much to go on at least it's something, and it's good to know the series didn't just fade away over the last few years. Whatever the future of DEAD ISLAND 2 may be, we'll keep you up to date on its progress.

Did you play DEAD ISLAND? What did you think about the game and are you excited about the sequel? Let us know on Facebook, Twitter, and/or Instagram!

Well, this news has me excited and intrigued, to say the least…

Looks like FRIDAY THE 13TH: THE GAME will feature something the developers are currently calling "Jason Traps", and yes, they are exactly what they sound like. Or maybe they aren't…

Are these traps Jason uses to catch campers? Or are these traps campers use to catch Jason? Humm… Turns out, they are traps Jason uses to catch campers. Nice.

That said, supposedly, the campers have traps too. FRIDAY THE 13TH: THE GAME developer "Wes" took to the F13Game forum to lay out, and answer, some questions about this new feature.

Wes The Developer on JASON TRAPS:

Q: Are Jason's traps the same asset as the counselors trap?

A: No. Jason spent a long time in the woods, alone. Honing his skills as a hunter and killer. This is a trap that he has created,I'm told, using found items in the woods. Old pieces of wood, rusty nails and spikes and perhaps old bed springs from an old mattress to slam the trap shut.

Q: How do Jason traps work?

A: Jason has traps in his inventory (hud icon). Once selected (button press) Jason kneels and places trap on ground, and then covers the trap with leaves.

Q: How many traps does Jason have?

A: Each Jason will have different amounts of traps. For example, J2 might have 5, whereas J8 only 3.

Q: Can Jason set traps anywhere on the map?

A: Jason can only set traps within exterior areas only. He can not set them inside a cabin/building/underwater/docks. Only on ground textures.

Q: Can Jason set traps near doors, windows and the car?

A: Yes. And it's awesome. You might think, at first blush, that this is too OP and could be used to troll. But Jason only has a limited amount of these.

Very cool info.

Here is a screen shot of one of the traps in "action." Covered in leaves. Not a great look, but I get it. I circled it so you can actually see it. But I guess that's the point.

As Jason sets the trap, he covers it with leaves thus providing some camo to the trap. Choosing where you set the trap is crucial. We chose to set one here on the road so you can clearly see it. But a smart Jason would set this trap near other "world" leaves, thus making it nearly invisible.

Here's a screenshot of a counselor stuck in a Jason Trap.

Ah, nice. The old bear trap.

Unfortunately, there is still no set release date for FRIDAY THE 13TH: THE GAME, but we will let you know, day or night, as soon as that info is made public.

You can read the full "Jason Traps Q&A" RIGHT HERE.

I wonder if fans were this excited for the NES version back in 1989.

2Dark is a stealth adventure horror game directed by Frédérick Raynal, developed by Gloomywood and published by Bigben Interactive on Windows, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One, as well as digital versions.

The game was released in digital form March 10th, and physical versions March 17th.

I haven't yet played the game (I'm not one for video games) but looking through the game's very provocative art (which you can peep below) this is a game, along with FRIDAY THE 13TH: THE GAME, I will be getting my hands on. And if a game can not only attract the attention of a dude who doesn't play video games, but make said dude want to play the game asap, then you know you're doing something right.

2 DARK follows a former detective named Mr. Smith travels to the town of Gloomywood to solve a mystery involving disappearing children. And, to me, looks like a mixture of HOUSE OF 1,000 CORPSES and SEVEN by way of Tim Burton.

Gameplay is intended to be simplistic and accessible to casual gamers. The player can pick up items by walking into them. Stealth will play a large role in the gameplay, and the player can use darkness to hide their location. Enemies can be alerted by sounds that the player makes. The player will need to rescue children, who will move slowly and be susceptible to danger.

You can learn more about 2DARK and order your own copy on your preferred system HERE. Before that, make sure to check out the story trailer and a handful of art below!
