JoBlo’s own Ryan Cultrera was recently able to catch up with several popular Final Girls at the Ve Neill’s Vampire Weekend convention in California. We’ve previously shared Ryan’s interviews with Lisa Wilcox from the Elm Street franchise, Christine Elise from the Child’s Play / Chucky franchise, and Melanie Kinnaman from Friday the 13th: A New Beginning. He also got to talk with one of the horror genre’s greatest male heroes, Ken Foree, the legendary character actor Michael Ironside, makeup artist Ve Neill and character actor Daniel Roebuck. But we’re not done sharing Vampire Weekend interviews yet! Now, we’ve collected moments from Ryan’s conversations with Melanie Kinnaman and Christine Elise in the video embedded above, which also includes previously unreleased interviews with Kevin McNally, Martin Klebba, and Lee Arenberg of the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise!

McNally has racked up nearly 200 acting credits over the course of his screen acting career, which stretches back to the 1970s. He played the role of Joshamee Gibbs in all five of the Pirates of the Caribbean films. Klebba made his screen debut in 2000 and already has over 100 credits to his name. He missed out on Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, but his character Marty was in the other four films. Arenberg also has over 100 credits to his name, having made his screen debut in the late ’80s. His character, named Pintel, was in the first three Pirates of the Caribbean movies.

We know Disney intends to make more Pirates of the Caribbean movies at some point, but it’s not clear if it’s going to be a follow-up to the five existing films or some kind of reboot.

Take a look at the interviews with Kinnaman, Elise, and the Caribbean cast members, then let us know what you thought of them by leaving a comment below!

Clown in a Cornfield Interview: Director Eli Craig and Kevin Durand on their slasher throwback https://www.joblo.com/clown-in-a-cornfield-interview/ https://www.joblo.com/clown-in-a-cornfield-interview/#respond Mon, 05 May 2025 16:12:20 +0000 https://www.joblo.com/?p=839356 We had a chat with director Eli Craig and co-star Kevin Durand about their teen slasher flick, Clown in a Cornfield.

After holding some preview screenings at drive-ins this past weekend, RLJE Films will be giving an adaptation of the Adam Cesare novel Clown in a Cornfield (pick up a copy HERE), directed by Tucker & Dale Vs. Evil and Little Evil‘s Eli Craig, a wide theatrical release on May 9th – and in anticipation of that release, JoBlo’s own Chris Bumbray was able to sit down for an interview with Craig and cast member Kevin Durand (Abigail)! You can watch the interview in the video embedded above.

Clown in a Cornfield centers on Quinn and her father, who have just moved to the quiet town of Kettle Springs hoping for a fresh start. Instead, she discovers a fractured community that has fallen on hard times after the treasured Baypen Corn Syrup Factory burned down. As the locals bicker amongst themselves and tensions boil over, a sinister, grinning figure emerges from the cornfields to cleanse the town of its burdens, one bloody victim at a time. Welcome to Kettle Springs. The real fun starts when Frendo the clown comes out to play. Eli Craig wrote the screenplay with Carter Blanchard.

Durand is joined in the cast by Katie Douglas (Ginny & Georgia), Carson MacCormac (Shazam!), Aaron Abrams (Hannibal), and Will Sasso (The Three Stooges).

Temple Hill Entertainment’s Marty Bowen, Wyck Godfrey, Isaac Klausner, and John Fischer produced alongside Paris Kassidokostas-Latsis and Terry Dougas of Rhea Films. Executive producers include Blanchard, as well as Jean-Luc De Fanti, Max Work, and Kostas Tsoukalas of Rhea Films, Petersen Harris and George Berman of Temple Hill, Dave Bishop and George Hamilton of Protagonist Pictures, Daniel Bekerman of Scythia Films Inc., and Myron John Tataryn of Thundersnow Pictures. Clown in a Cornfield is a Rhea Films Production as well as a Temple Hill Production and was financed by Hercules Film Fund.

When the distribution deal was made, Craig said, “I’m thrilled to partner with RLJE Films and Shudder to release this insanely fun action, horror, comedy where we always wanted it to be seen — in theaters! As always in my movies, there’s a deeper theme about the collision of perspectives and ideals that leads to utter mayhem. It was fun in this one, however, to let the horror thrills take the lead, while the comedic absurdity that I can’t help but see in life brings a bit of levity.

If the Clown in a Cornfield movie is successful, there is definitely franchise potential here. Cesare has already written two more novels in the series, Clown in a Cornfield II: Frendo Lives and Clown in a Cornfield III: The Church of Frendo. Bumbray had the chance to watch Clown in a Cornfield a while back and gave it a 7/10 review that can be read at THIS LINK.

Are you looking forward to Clown in a Cornfield? Check out our interview with Eli Craig and Kevin Durand, then let us know by leaving a comment below.

To hear what Ironside had to say, check out the video embedded above!

Ironside’s credits include playing the head-exploding Darryl Revok in Scanners, the misogynistic killer Colt Hawker in Visiting Hours, Jester in Top Gun, Bill Nordham in Hello Mary Lou: Prom Night II, Major Paul Hackett in Extreme Prejudice, psychotic NSO agent Lem Johnson in Watchers, the villainous Richter in Total Recall, immortal bad guy General Katana in Highlander II: The Quickening, park owner Dial in Free Willy, Colonel Paul Dugan in The Next Karate Kid, Jean Rasczak in Starship Troopers, a priest in Children of the Corn: Revelation, a captain in X-Men: First Class, and father-in-law / boss Eddie Williams in Nobody. He provided the narration for Late Night with the Devil and voiced the character Sam Fisher in Splinter Cell video games. He appeared on episodes of Barry, The Flash, R.L. Stine’s The Haunting Hour, Smallville, Burn Notice, Castle, Cold Case, Criminal Minds, Desperate Housewives, ER, Masters of Horror, Tales from the Crypt, SeaQuest 2032, V, The A-Team, The Outer Limits; Walker, Texas Ranger… the list goes on and on. As mentioned, he has almost 300 credits.

Are you a fan of Michael Ironside? What is your favorite movie he has been in, and role he has played? Check out our interview with him, then let us know by leaving a comment below. It’s a tough choice to make – but I can say that the Ironside movie I watch most often is probably Visiting Hours.

The latest from Blumhouse surprised me. Drop is one of those flicks that you step into and realize that you are having lots of fun with. It helps that filmmaker Christopher Landon has crafted a taut little thriller. And he also happened to bring in the right actors. Meghann Fahy and Brandon Sklenar are terrific as a couple on a first date. You have a fancy, top-floor restaurant with one hell of a view. Add to that a series of threatening “airdrops” that send our heroic leading lady on a mission to save her family. It’s an exciting movie that is perfect for a date night. You can check out Chris Bumbray’s take on this engaging surprise here.

Earlier this week, we spoke to the cast and filmmaker behind Drop. First up, we spoke with Christopher Landon about his latest. He talked about bringing this technologically driven cat-and-mouse game to the big screen. He also had high praise for his two leads. I’d have to agree with him on this; they were delightful. And finally, with the recent announcement that Happy Death Day 3 was finally happening, he spoke about the excitement from the fans.

When I walked in and sat down with Meghann and Brandon, they instantly made me feel welcome. And with the setup in the room designed to be like a dinner date, it was incredibly charming and comfortable. The first thing I brought up was Brandon’s lack of a tie in the film, and that conjured up a whole lot of face and fabric discussion. They talked about how nice it was to work with each other, as well as their movie waiter, Jeffrey Self. It was such a terrific chat; it put me in the mood to click on another viewing of Drop.

Drop opens today, only in theatres.

The horror genre is best known for its “Final Girls,” and JoBlo’s own Ryan Cultrera was recently able to catch up with several popular Final Girls at the Ve Neill’s Vampire Weekend convention in California. This week, we’ve shared Ryan’s interviews with Lisa Wilcox from the Elm Street franchise, Christine Elise from the Child’s Play / Chucky franchise, and Melanie Kinnaman from Friday the 13th: A New Beginning. Now, Ryan shares a conversation he had with one of the horror genre’s greatest male heroes – Ken Foree.

Foree has over 100 screen acting credits to his name and, in recent years, has been a regular in Rob Zombie movies, showing up in the likes of The Devil’s Rejects, Halloween, and The Lords of Salem – but before he teamed up with Zombie, he was known to genre fans for playing heroic characters in George A. Romero’s Dawn of the Dead (he also has a cameo in that film’s remake) and Jeff Burr’s Leatherface: Texas Chainsaw Massacre III. He also played an ill-fated fellow in the Stuart Gordon movie From Beyond.

Of course, Foree needed a good amount of time to cover some of the many amazing roles he has played and awesome movies he has been in over the years, so our interview video runs for almost a full half hour! It’s about the same length as an episode of Kenan & Kel, the popular sitcom Foree had a co-starring role on back in the day. You can check it out in the embed above.

What did you think of our Ken Foree interview? What is your favorite Ken Foree movie, and which of the characters he has played is your favorite? Let us know by leaving a comment below. My favorite is Dawn of the Dead and his character from that film, Peter.

Friday the 13th: A New Beginning, the fifth film in the Friday the 13th franchise, is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year – and JoBlo’s own Ryan Cultrera was recently able to catch up with Melanie Kinnaman, who played the film’s heroine, at the Ve Neill’s Vampire Weekend convention in California! Ryan talked with Kinnaman about her experience working on the classic slasher, and you can watch the interview in the video embedded above.

Directed by Danny Steinmann, who also crafted the screenplay with Martin Kitrosser and David Cohen, Friday the 13th: A New Beginning has the following synopsis: Years after Tommy Jarvis murdered hockey-masked serial killer Jason Voorhees, he resides in a mental hospital and struggles with the trauma of the experience. When Tommy moves to an isolated halfway house, he has nightmares about Jason’s return, and soon one of the patients is killed. As the body count grows, Tommy begins to question his sanity and wonder if Jason has risen from the dead. But, to determine the killer’s identity, Tommy will need to survive.

Kinnaman was joined in the cast by John Shepherd, Shavar Ross, Richard Young, Dick Wieand, Marco St. John, Tiffany Helm, Juliette Cummins, Jerry Pavlon, Vernon Washington, Debi Sue Voorhees, John Robert Dixon, William Caskey Swaim, Richard Lineback, Miguel A. Núñez Jr., Jere Fields, Bob DeSimone, Rebecca Wood, Corey Parker, Anthony Barrile, Todd Bryant, Curtis Conaway, Sonny Shields, Dominick Brascia, Mark Venturini, Carol Locatell, Ron Sloan, Ric Mancini, Suzanne Bateman, Eddie Matthews, Chuck Wells, Tom Morga, and Johnny Hock, with a cameo appearance by Corey Feldman.

When the sequel was first released, a lot of fans were disappointed by it, largely because Jason Voorhees is only present through nightmares and hallucinations (the actual killer is a copycat). Many of those fans have since embraced it for being the sleazy, fun slasher movie that it is.

Are you a fan of Friday the 13th: A New Beginning? Take a look at our Melanie Kinnaman interview, then let us know by leaving a comment below.

Christine Elise has shared the screen with Chucky the killer doll several times over the decades, first appearing as the heroine Kyle in Child’s Play 2 back in 1990, then reprising the role for Cult of Chucky (the seventh film in the series) in 2017 and multiple episodes of the Chucky TV show, which ran for three seasons, from 2021 to 2024. JoBlo’s own Ryan Cultrera was able to catch up with Elise at the Ve Neill’s Vampire Weekend convention in California last month and talked with her about her experiences working with Chucky and interacting with the horror community – and you can find out what she had to say by checking out the interview video embedded above.

In addition to her work with Chucky, Elise may be best known for playing Emily Valentine in 12 episodes of Beverly Hills, 90210, a version of herself in the meta revival BH90210, and Harper Tracy in 15 episodes of ER. During the interview, Elise reveals that she would love to get a role in another horror franchise, saying it would be “f*cking awesome” to get to be killed by Jason Voorhees of the Friday the 13th franchise, Michael Myers of the Halloween franchise, or Art the Clown of the Terrifier franchise.

Elise’s other credits include the Get Shorty TV series, Castle, Prom, Cold Case, Charmed, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, JAG, Judging Amy, Body Snatchers, Boiling Point, Northern Exposure, the ’90s versions of Fantasy Island and The Outer Limits, In the Heat of the Night, China Beach, Matlock, Father Dowling Mysteries, Head of the Class, Baywatch, 21 Jump Street, the short-lived ’90s TV version of A League of Their Own, and much more.

I always thought the Kyle character was awesome in Child’s Play 2, so I was very glad to see Christine Elise come back for Cult of Chucky and the Chucky TV series. Are you a fan of Christine Elise’s work as Kyle in the Child’s Play / Chucky franchise? Take a look at our interview, then let us know by leaving a comment below.

And make sure to stay tuned through the whole video to catch a cameo appearance by Ken Foree of Dawn of the Dead, From Beyond, Leatherface: Texas Chainsaw Massacre III, The Devil’s Rejects, etc.

While we anxiously await the final season of Stranger Things, the cast has been keeping busy with other projects. Sadie Sink with O’Dessa, Millie Bobby Brown with The Electric State, and now Finn Wolfhard with Hell of a Summer. And while Wolfhard certainly takes a role in front of the camera, it’s his role behind the camera that gives this film a spotlight: director. Making his directorial debut alongside his writing partner Billy Bryk, the two young filmmakers are taking aim at the slasher genre. And while Hell of a Summer certainly has plenty of death, it’s more comedy than anything. You can check out Chris Bumbray’s review HERE, which I’d say is pretty spot on.

I spoke to writer/directors Finn Wolfhard and Billy Bryk, along with castmembers Fred Hechinger, Abby Quinn, D’Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai, and Pardis Saremi about their time making the film. Given the slasher vernacular in the film, I had to ask the writing/directing duo about their favorite slasher films. There were some absolute classics included, so as a big slasher fan myself, I was tickled. Fred speaks about why he wanted to do a slasher, while the other cast members get into how much filming really felt like summer camp. You can really tell that this was an experience that they’ll all fondly remember. You can check out the interview above (and for those that have seen the film, stay tuned till the end for some spoilery insight).

HELL OF A SUMMER plot: Hell of a Summer follows 24-year-old camp counselor Jason Hochberg (Hechinger), who arrives at Camp Pineway thinking his biggest problem is that he feels out of touch with his teenage co-workers. What he doesn’t know is that a masked killer is lurking on the campgrounds, brutally picking counselors off one by one.

HELL OF A SUMMER IS PLAYING IN THEATERS EVERYWHERE ON APRIL 4TH, 2025.

The post Lisa Wilcox interview: A Nightmare on Elm Street 4 and 5 heroine looks back on her battles with Freddy Krueger appeared first on JoBlo.

The A Nightmare on Elm Street franchise has some of the best heroines of the horror genre – and my personal favorite of the Elm Street heroines is Alice Johnson, played by Lisa Wilcox in A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master and A Nightmare on Elm Street: The Dream Child. JoBlo’s own Ryan Cultrera was able to catch up with Wilcox at the Ve Neill’s Vampire Weekend convention in California last month and talked with her about her encounters with Freddy Krueger and the experience of working on those classic ’80s horror films. You can hear what Wilcox had to say by checking out the video embedded above.

Directed by Renny Harlin from a screenplay by Brian Helgeland, Ken Wheat, and Jim Wheat (with Helgeland also sharing story credit with William Kotzwinkle), A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master has the following synopsis: Your fave psycho-sandman is back! It’s the one-man-sleep-disorder, the unspeakably demonic Freddy Krueger, returning with a vengeance in A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master! But wait. This time around, the fiendishly Freddy is up against a powerful new adversary! After beautiful young Alice sees the remaining Elm Street kids succumb one by one to Freddy’s razor-edged wrath, she embarks on a desperate mission to release the tortured souls of Freddy’s victims once and for all. Can this lone “Dream Master” defeat the satanic dream-stalker? Or will she have to wake up to the fact that no one is ever really ready… for Freddy? A special-effects-filled descent into sheer, unrelenting terror!

Wilcox was joined in the cast by Danny Hassel, Tuesday Knight, Ken Sagoes, Rodney Eastman, Brooke Theiss, Andras Jones, Toy Newkirk, Nicholas Mele, and Brooke Bundy, with Robert Englund as Freddy Krueger. Plus, there’s a cameo appearance by Linnea Quigley as a soul in Freddy’s chest.

Directed by Stephen Hopkins from a screenplay by Leslie Bohem and a story crafted by John Skipp and Craig Spector, The Dream Child has the following synopsis: The fifth installment of the popular franchise focuses on Alice, a survivor of the fourth, who believes Freddy Krueger has been eliminated for good. She optimistically hopes to start a life with fellow survivor Dan. The nightmares begin soon enough, though, and Alice learns she is pregnant. When her friends start dying, Alice suspects that Freddy is using the fetus within her as a weapon. Can she fight the demon while protecting her unborn child?

For that one, Wilcox was joined in the cast by Kelly Jo Minter, Erika Anderson, Danny Hassel, Beatrice Boepple, Whitby Hertford, Joe Seely, and Nicholas Mele, with Robert Englund as Freddy Krueger and Michael Bailey Smith as Super Freddy.

I’m not sure there’s another actress within the horror genre as loyal as Samara Weaving. Even as she branches out into other fare, she always makes her way back to the genre. Now, she’s teaming with her husband Jimmy Warden to give us some of his signature Cocaine Bear spirit (on which he was a writer). Borderline follows a 90s popstar who is being stalked by a man who’s living in a total fantasy world where he thinks he’s dating said popstar. While not quite as over the top as a bear killing people fueled on cocaine, Borderline certainly impresses (Check out my review HERE).

It’s always a treat to talk to Samara, as she’s very affable and clearly has a deep love for all things horror. Her character Sofia is a bit more restrained, so she gets to play more of the “straight man” to some of the more over the top characters in Borderline. This is really Ray Nicholson’s movie and he absolutely shines. Ray discusses how much fun he had playing such an unhinged character and who influenced the performance. Then writer/director Jimmy Warden tells us which unique prop he made sure to take home from set. If you’ve seen the film, you’ll know exactly which one I’m talking about. Check out all the fun in the video above!

Borderline plot: COCAINE BEAR writer Jimmy Warden makes his twisted directorial debut in this edge-of-your-seat thriller that follows a dangerously persistent stalker (SMILE 2’s Ray Nicholson) who invades the home of a ‘90s pop superstar (READY OR NOT’s Samara Weaving) with grand delusions of a wedding. With her life on the line and help from her loyal bodyguard, she must escape the stalker’s sinister grip before they tie the knot.

BORDERLINE IS NOW PLAYING IN THEATERS AND AVAILABLE DIGITALLY ON MARCH 14TH, 2025.

Something very strange happened on December 6th, 2024. This was originally going to be the release date for the Lucy Hale lead F Marry Kill, but at the last minute, Lionsgate delayed the film. Only one problem: no one told the digital retailers. So on that early December day, the film was digitally released to the masses. They were able to rectify the mistake and promptly pulled it from those retailers, but the internet is forever, and copies got out there. Not exactly the most ideal way to market your movie, but any press is good press. And in a crowded December, this certainly has more room to breathe now in March. You can check out my review of the film HERE.

I was fortunate enough to talk with the cast and director of F Marry Kill. I chatted with Lucy Hale about what she thought about this accidental release, and she was excited to finally get to talk about it. Director Laura Murphy got into the film’s title and why they had to change it from F*** to simply the letter F for marketing. We also get into some very fun spoilers from the film, so make sure to check it out, though there’s plenty of non-spoiler talk in the video interview above!

F MARRY KILL plot: When true-crime junkie Eva Vaugh (Lucy Hale) is shoved into the dating app world by her besties on her 30th birthday, she suddenly finds herself at the center of a real murder case. As new details about the murders are revealed on her favorite podcast, she realizes that one of the three men she’s dating could be the infamous “Swipe Right Killer” terrorizing the city! Now it’s up to Eva and her ride-or-die friends to figure out which date is a f-boy, a potential husband, or a killer in this whip-smart comedy-thriller.

It’s always exciting to see major actors try their hand at horror. Both John Lithgow and Geoffrey Rush have never shied away from it, and always find interesting roles when they do take part. That’s no different here as The Rule of Jenny Pen provides the two thespians an absolute smorgasbord to play with. They get to play nemesis and are really able to milk each of their interactions. There’s a tension present whenever these two are in the same room and it’s because they know how to play off the small moments so well. I didn’t love the film itself (check out my review HERE) but I was floored by the performances from these two talented actors.

Talking to two absolute acting titans like John Lithgow and Geoffrey Rush can be a bit intimidating. Thankfully, they’re two of the nicest people out there and truly love acting, so it made them very easy to talk to. It was fascinating to see their rapport together, with Rush asking if Lithgow had performed a certain Shakespeare play. If anything I wish I had more time with them as they had such thoughtful answers. And with Lithgow having played so many all time great villains, I asked him who had the most humanity between The Trinity Killer (from Dexter), Carter/Cain (from Raising Cain), and Dave Crealy. The answer may surprise you. Check it all out in the embedded video above!

The Rule of Jenny Pen plot: Arrogant Judge Stefan Mortensen (Rush) suffers a near-fatal stroke, leaving him partially paralyzed and confined to a retirement home. Resistant to the staff and distant from his friendly roommate, Mortensen soon clashes with seemingly gentle resident Dave Crealy (Lithgow) who secretly terrorizes the home with a sadistic game called “The Rule of Jenny Pen” while wielding his dementia doll as an instrument of cruelty. What begins as childish torment quickly escalates into far more sinister and disturbing incidents. When Mortensen’s pleas to the staff go unanswered, he takes it upon himself to put an end to Crealy’s reign of terror.

THE RULE OF JENNY PEN IS IN THEATERS ON MARCH 7TH AND STREAMING ON SHUDDER ON MARCH 20TH, 2025.

Last year, Osgood Perkins’s oddity Longlegs captured horror fans’ attention. The Nicolas Cage-starring thriller earned plenty of fans from critics and audiences alike. And now, Perkins has returned with one of the wackiest splatter flicks you’re likely to see in cinema. The Monkey is an adaptation of Stephen King‘s short story. The film offers Theo James, Christian Convery, and Colin O’Brien the chance to play twin brothers. It also features a fine performance from Rohan Campbell, the star of Halloween Ends. Looking for a return to over-the-top and blood-soaked shenanigans in horror? The Monkey will hit the right beats.

Recently, I had the great pleasure of chatting with some of the stars of The Monkey. Stepping into the room to speak to Theo James and Osgood Perkins, I offered a little nostalgia for Osgood. My first job in Los Angeles was at a record/video store. It was one that had quite a collection of celebrity customers. Our store had a wall of autographs just from the many that we had stopped by, including several regulars. One of them happened to be the late, great Anthony Perkins. I remember first meeting him, and talking about video games.

As I shared that story with Osgood, he replied smiling, mentioning the store’s name and where it had been located. It’s long gone now, but I will always have a soft spot for Music Plus. And frankly, Perkins’ reaction was terrific, and clearly, it brought back memories. We went on to have a great interview. And as we wrapped up, he said, “It was good to see you again.” And yes, it was. Osgood is a kind gentleman, so it was lovely having that video store connection.

In addition to James and Perkins, we also spoke to Convery, O’Brien, and Campbell. It was terrific speaking to both O’Brien and Convery. The two actors faced the same challenges Mr. James took on. And all three talents shined. As for Rohan, I spoke to him at a convention a couple of years back, and it was great to see him again. He discussed playing the role of “Thrasher” and working with a director like Perkins. The performances all work in this wildly violent and bloody comedy horror flick. If you dig a little “splatter horror” then you are going to go ape for The Monkey!

I know most of us here at JoBlo are big fans of Anya Taylor Joy. From The Witch to The Menu to Furiosa, she has made such an impact. So it’s intriguing to see her team with Doctor Strange‘s Scott Derrickson on a Sci-Fi Action flick with horror elements. Then add in Miles Teller, who we haven’t seen since 2022’s Top Gun Maverick) and you’ve got the pieces for an interesting film. Whether it comes together or not is going to have to be up to you. You can check out my review but needless to say: I wasn’t a fan.

However, I was fortunate enough to talk to Anya Taylor Joy and Miles Teller about their experience on The Gorge. It was interesting to hear that the two have been friends for a long time and were looking for a project to do together. There’s also a pretty brutal scene that I had to ask about, and their responses make it clear that they weren’t fans of what they had to do.

THE GORGE plot: Two highly-trained operatives (Miles Teller and Anya Taylor-Joy) are appointed to posts in guard towers on opposite sides of a vast and highly classified gorge, protecting the world from an undisclosed, mysterious evil that lurks within. They bond from a distance while trying to stay vigilant in defending against an unseen enemy. When the cataclysmic threat to humanity is revealed to them, they must work together in a test of both their physical and mental strength to keep the secret in the gorge before it’s too late.

THE GORGE IS STREAMING EXCLUSIVELY ON APPLE TV PLUS ON FEBRUARY 14TH, 2025.

I dug Heart Eyes! A fun, fast-paced mash-up of the romantic comedy genre and slasher flicks, it should do nicely at the box office this weekend. It certainly doesn’t hurt that the surprisingly gory R-rated flick stars rising horror icon Mason Gooding in one of the leading roles and has a witty screenplay by Happy Death Day’s Christopher Landon. We gave it a solid review, and folks should enjoy it when it opens this Friday.

Recently, we had the chance to sit down with the cast for a round of interviews, and you can tell how excited they were about potentially launching a new franchise. First up were Mason Gooding, Olivia Holt, and Gigi Zumbado. Holt reflected on playing her first final girl, Gooding paid tribute to the horror community that has embraced him, and Zumbado yearns for her own match-up against Heart Eyes.

Next were two legends, Jordan Brewster and Devon Sawa. Brewster, who’s had a long career in horror (going back to The Faculty), had a blast in her role, with her having fun at a certain Fast & Furious nod, which was apparently in the script even before she was hired. And, like Gooding, Sawa acknowledges how supportive horror fans have been throughout this career, and expresses his hope that the now-cancelled Chucky series gets revived.

Marketing a movie is very difficult, especially in this day and age. So many streaming services and other elements are always vying for your attention. So, I’m trying not to hold it against Companion that the marketing spoils a massive element in the trailer. As someone who has seen the film (and absolutely loved it), it’s definitely something you should avoid, but not something that entirely ruins the film if you know it. Even still, I’m a movie lover first, so I refuse to elaborate for those lucky enough to avoid plot points. The interview gets into the spoiler-filled marketing, so check back after you’ve seen the film if you’ve avoided the trailer so far.

As a massive fan of all involved, I was absolutely honored to sit down with stars Jack Quaid, Sophie Thatcher, Lukas Gage, Harvey Guillen, Megan Suri, and writer/director Drew Hancock to discuss the film. We got into the marketing, how it spoils a major part of the film, and why the movie still holds up despite that. And I made sure to give Jack some love for all of his RedLetterMedia appearances. This is probably my favorite interview ever, so you’re definitely going to watch the video above!

Thanks to An American Werewolf in London anThe Howling, I’ve always deeply loved werewolves. Yet, sometimes, a movie will just connect to the viewer in a shockingly deep way. An unexpected way. Leigh Whannell‘s Wolf Man did just that for me. While I’ve certainly seen some of the reviews that did not sing the movie’s praise, there is something about this very personal and frankly pretty sad film that worked for me. Ultimately, something about the tortured Blake was nothing like I’d expected, and the rather heartbreaking performance from Christopher Abbott resonated.

I’ve enjoyed all of Leigh Whannell’s directorial work. Even his turn in the director’s chair for Insidious: Chapter 3 brought some chills for me. Having been at this site for many years, I find it a fantastic experience interviewing Mr. Whannell. He’s always been incredibly kind to JoBlo and is one of the nicest fellows you’d ever run into. While we spoke with the filmmaker earlier, which you can see below, it was nice to get the chance to dig deeper into the feature and the connection that cinema can have with those sitting in the darkness.

Besides getting rather deep and personal with Wolf Man in this extended conversation, he opened up about his other films. The conversation led to other cool avenues, including my curiosity about returning to Invisible Man or Upgrade territory. Leigh is an incredibly gracious and talented filmmaker who always makes himself available and open for an excellent conversation. In other words, he’s a great guy!

Ever since James Wan and Leigh Whannell introduced a little horror to the world with Saw, they have become exciting names in the horror genre. Mr. Whannell continues to impress from his directorial debut in the world of supernatural frights with Insidious: Chapter 3. From his excellent Upgrade to the wonderfully suspenseful and expertly crafted The Invisible Man – an absolute favorite of mine. And now, he brings us the impressive Wolf Man, the filmmaker’s take on the 1941 classic starring Lon Chaney Jr. Thankfully, Whannell offers up a terrific cast that includes Christopher Abbott, Julia Garner, and Matilda Firth. And frankly, this one is such a personal take on the story that it struck a chord with this viewer.

Recently, we spoke to the cast, as well as executive producer Beatriz Sequeira. We also sat down for the first of our two-part interview with the man of the hour, Leigh Whannell. I sat down with Julia Garner – who you can look for in the upcoming Madonna biopic Who’s That Girl and The Fantastic Four: First Steps as the Silver Surfer. Julia brings a quiet strength to her performance as Charlotte in Wolf Man. It’s an impressive performance. And as for her co-star, the wonderfully talented Christopher Abbott, he spoke about taking on such a challenging character, both physically and mentally. Whannell impressed me with his casting choices here. It’s a very believable family portrayal, which makes the movie all the more chilling.

And finally, I spoke with executive producer Beatriz Squeira. Having talked to her before about last year’s effective, Speak No Evil, it was terrific to discuss classic monster tales. As well as what she is looking forward to when it comes to bringing frights to the big screen. And of course, sitting down with Leigh Whannell is always a joy. For part one of our conversation, we focus mainly on the film and the cast itself. Leigh, who co-wrote Wolf Man with his wife Corbett Tuck, brings a very personal touch with this take on this classic Universal movie monster. And it’s all the more involving because of it.

Wolf Man opens this Friday and I recommend seeing it with a crowd. It’s tense, scary, and even heartbreaking. It’s yet another solid feature from one of genre’s most exciting voices. Check out our review HERE.

When news broke that various children’s properties would enter the public domain and be made into cheap horror movies, most of us expected films that would straight to DVD or Streaming. And while that is the case for many of these releases, not the case with the Poohniverse. Starting with Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey, this cinematic universe has found success with its brief theatrical runs. So much so that we’re being treated to a whole slate of films that include Bambi, Winnie the Pooh and Pinochio. The latest entry, Peter Pan’s Neverland Nightmare, releases in theaters for only three days (just like the Blood and Honey films) so be sure to check it out in theaters if you want more. My review will go up the night of release.

I was excited to chat with director of Neverland Nightmare (and star of Blood and Honey 2), Scott Chambers to discuss all things Poohniverse. What surprised me the most was that the first Blood and Honey was simply one of dozens of horror films that they made that year. Its viral success has allowed the filmmakers to focus on less projects; all of them leading to an Avengers-style teamup film which is set to be released next year. I’m really impressed with the sheer determination of Chambers in getting these films done. This also served as the first interview where the person ended up being a fan of my work, so that was a real “pinch me” moment. Scott also offered to kill me off in a future Poohniverse film so here’s hoping that actually comes to fruition. Like any horror fan, the dream is to be killed on screen in a horror film. Check out the rest of the interview in the embedded video above!

Peter Pan’s Neverland Nightmare plot:

The newest entry into the Poohniverse follows Wendy Darling as she strikes out in an attempt to rescue her brother Michael from the clutches of the evil Peter Pan who intends to send him to Neverland. Along the way she meets a twisted Tinkerbell, who is hooked on what she thinks is fairy dust.

From Jagged Edge Productions and ITN Studios, Peter Pan’s Neverland Nightmare arrives in theaters for three days only starting January 13, 2025 until January 15, 2025 only from Iconic Events Releasing. Buy your tickets now at Iconic Events.

Period horror often has a tough hill to climb within the modern landscape of cinema. Younger generations prefer a more energetic pacing in short bursts so a drawn-out film that relies on tension and dread can be a tough sell. Thankfully, I’m an old man and absolutely love any horror film that can bring me on a journey through hell, regardless of the time period. And thankfully The Damned is able to utilize the setting and give us a glimpse at a time that passed while walking the line of myth. I really enjoyed the film myself.

Actor Odessa Young and Director Thordur Palsson were gracious enough to talk to me about their film The Damned. We got into the very harsh conditions in which they filmed in as well as the difficulties of something as simple as getting equipment to their filming location. But I was surprised to hear how much comradery was formed on the set, as the cast and crew bandied together to make the most of the tough conditions. This was a great talk and you can check it out in its entirety in the video embedded above.

THE DAMNED plot: The Damned is a tense psychological horror film that follows a 19th-century widow who is tasked with making an impossible choice when a ship sinks off the coast of her isolated fishing outpost during the middle of an especially cruel winter. With provisions running low, Eva and her close-knit community must choose between rescuing the shipwrecked crew and prioritizing their own survival. Facing the consequences of their decision and tormented by guilt, the inhabitants wrestle with a mounting sense of dread and begin to believe they are all being punished for their choices.

You’ve likely heard the hype. This Christmas, Robert Eggers brings us his fourth feature film, as he offers the legend of Nosferatu to the big screen. Eggers remake or reboot, whatever you’d like to call it, is an exceptional film. The performances from Nicholas Hoult, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Emma Corrin, and Willem Dafoe are terrific. Yet it is both Lily-Rose Depp and Bill Skarsgard that bring a bloody heart and soul to this darkly beautiful and haunting feature. It’s rare to see such care taken to create a villain with tons more depth than your generic movie monster. Eggers examines this by incorporating elements of both the original Nosferatu and the legacy of Dracula.

Recently, we sat down to interview Mr. Eggers about his latest feature. The filmmaker discussed the influences that went into this dark new nightmare. He talked about merging the elements of Dracula, among others, into the mix. Robert talked about how much care and effort went into bringing his vision to the big screen. And for this viewer, it was a massive treat. If you are a fan of the director, you are likely going to enjoy this quite a bit. After all, take a look at what our own Chris Bumbray had to say about this gorgeous new feature here.

Nosferatu has finally risen! What did you think? Share your thoughts below!

An unofficial adaptation of Bram Stoker’s Dracula, F.W. Murnau’s 1922 classic Nosferatu has the following synopsis: In this highly influential silent horror film, the mysterious Count Orlok (Max Schreck) summons Thomas Hutter (Gustav von Wangenheim) to his remote Transylvanian castle in the mountains. The eerie Orlok seeks to buy a house near Hutter and his wife, Ellen (Greta Schroeder). After Orlok reveals his vampire nature, Hutter struggles to escape the castle, knowing that Ellen is in grave danger. Meanwhile Orlok’s servant, Knock (Alexander Granach), prepares for his master to arrive at his new home. Werner Herzog directed his own remake of the film in 1979. Murnau’s film had a running time of 94 minutes and Herzog’s is 107 minutes long, so Eggers’ 132 minute version is substantially longer than its predecessors.

Eggers’ take on Nosferatu is a gothic tale of obsession between a haunted young woman in 19th century Germany and the ancient Transylvanian vampire who stalks her, bringing untold horror with him.

Nothing quite makes my heart warm like a good slasher movie. And I know many of our readers agree. But the genre has been neglected far too much and is often left to low IQ fare. Every now and then someone comes along and clearly seems to care more than the average filmmaker. They see the genre for what it is: a canvas to be able to show off creative kills and tales of chaos. And thankfully producers Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Hilarie Burton Morgan are more than up to the task with their first feature-length horror film, Bloody Axe Wound. I really enjoyed the film and you can check out my review later this week.

I was fortunate enough to discuss Bloody Axe Wound with its stars Sari Arambulo and Molly Brown. I’ve been a fan of Sari’s since AP Bio, so I was pumped to see how appreciative she is of her time on the show. We discussed the unique relationships in the film, and why it’s important to not put a spotlight on something just because it’s different. Then producer Hilarie Burton Morgan gave us the full rundown of how the film entered production. We get all the details of why the script was chosen, if her husband Jeffrey Dean Morgan was always destined for a role, and her favorite slasher film. I could talk slashers all day so I was in heaven during this interview. Check it out in the embedded video above!

Back as the end of 1999 came to a close, there was a whole lotta chatter about what would happen as the new decade began. Seriously, people were terrified that all sorts of calamities would happen. They didn’t. Actually very little happened besides people having to remember the correct year back when writing checks was common. But what if something did happen? Thankfully, we have the comedy stylings of Kyle Mooney making his directorial debut with Y2K. In the comedy-horror flick, a group of teens find out that all is not well on New Years Eve as they find themselves facing off against hilariously nightmarish situations. The film stars Jaeden Martell, Rachel Zegler, Julian Dennison, and Fred Durst. Yep, the Limp Bizkit frontman, Mr. Fred Durst.

I recently had a fun conversation with Kyle Mooney, Jaeden Martell, and Julian Dennison. Kyle talked about taking on this feature for his directorial debut. He also chatted about what appealed to him about mixing frights and funny. For Jaeden, the actor talked about working in horror. And while this has scary elements, the comedy plays a major part in his latest. As for Julian, he discussed what he appreciated about the role and working on this particular project. The three gents were all very engaging, and it was a pleasure talking about the insanity of Y2K. And yes, the subject of how damn enjoyable Fred Durst was here. He’s a highlight in the film.

Y2K opens today at a theatre near you! Read our review!

The feature directorial debut of Saturday Night Live veteran Kyle Mooney, who also crafted the screenplay with Evan Winter, Y2K has the following official logline: On the last night of 1999, two high school juniors crash a New Years Eve party, only to find themselves fighting for their lives in this dial-up disaster comedy.

The film stars Jaeden Martell (Stephen King’s It), Rachel Zegler (West Side Story), Julian Dennison (Hunt for the Wilderpeople), Daniel Zolghadri (Tales from the Loop), Lachlan Watson (Chilling Adventures of Sabrina), Limp Bizkit frontman Fred Durst, Eduardo Franco (The Package), Mason Gooding (Scream VI), Australian rapper The Kid Laroi, newcomer Lauren Balone, Alicia Silverstone (Clueless), Tim Heidecker (Tim and Eric’s Billion Dollar Movie), Maureen Sebastian (Revolution), Miles Robbins (Blockers), Ellie Ricker (A Christmas in Royal Fashion), Jacob Moskovitz (Magnum P.I.), Daniel Dale (Elsbeth), Luca R. Stagnitta (Life & Beth), Anzi DeBenedetto (FBI), newcomer Zachary Clark, Frank Langley (Voodoo Possession), Kevin Mangold (Red Clover), Sebastian Chacon (Daisy Jones & The Six), and Mooney himself.

Werewolves seem to be going through a bit of a comeback. From The Wolfman to The Beast Within, it certainly feels like there’s more happening within the subgenre than ever before. Yet they do often feel very…samey. They often involve a man being bitten by a mysterious creature and then having to fight the urges of his werewolf counterpart. This is why it’s so exciting that we’re finally getting a film involving Werewolves that breaks the mold and does something different. And boy oh boy is it different. With an entire planet filled with Werewolves and practical FX that are sure to satisfy, this is the Werewolf movie we’ve always wanted. You can check out my glowing review of Werewolves HERE. I was also fortunate enough to interview star Frank Grillo and director Steven C. Miller about all things Werewolves.

Grillo is always the man (check out when he shouted us out) so it was a blast to pick his brain about the film. And given the parallels between The Purge and Werewolves, his inclusion feels all the more apropos. Ever since Silent Night I’ve considered Miller an underrated director and he continues to prove it with every new film. Werewolves shows us just enough of the creatures, always cutting away at the appropriate moments, allowing the practical FX to flourish. Sometimes big lumbering creature suits can be a little slow on camera, so the editing really comes through here, giving us believable Werewolves. Check out the interview above and make sure you check out Werewolves in theaters. We need more films like this.

Werewolves plot: A supermoon event has triggered a latent gene in every human on the planet, turning anyone who entered the moonlight into a werewolf for that one night. Chaos ensued and close to a billion people died. Now, a year later, the Supermoon is back….

There are few actors more synonymous with wonderful performances beneath layers of prosthetics and makeup than Doug Jones. Having appeared as Abe Sapian in the Guillermo Del Toro Hellboy films, the Creature in The Shape of Water, and even Billy Butcherson in Hocus Pocus, Jones has had a career that most actors simply dream of.

Doug can be seen in the recently released Nosferatu: Symphony of Horror, where he plays the title character; a role that Jones has wanted to play for decades. We spoke about the process of filming using elements from the original 1922 film as green screen backdrops, and how wonderful Max Schreck’s performance in the first film was. Doug is also starring in the final season of What We Do In The Shadows as The Baron, a role which has been an absolute highlight over the series’ 6 season run (and it was originally just supposed to be a one-episode cameo) Finally, we get into Hocus Pocus 3 and whether or not Doug has heard any rumblings of a production start. Doug could not have been more generous with his time and he was an absolute delight. Check out the video interview embedded above.

A little about Doug Jones: Doug is famous for starring in iconic film and TV roles under heavy prosthetic makeup. Some of his most recognizable characters include The Amphibian Man in the Oscar-winning film The Shape of Water, both Fauno and The Pale Man in Pan’s Labyrinth, Abe Sapien in the Hellboy movies, Billy Butcherson in Disney’s Hocus Pocus 1 & 2, The Silver Surfer in Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer, and Mac Tonight, the moon-headed piano player in McDonald’s long-running 1990’s ad campaign. Jones recently starred as Saru on Star Trek: Discovery and recurs as Baron Afanas on What We Do in the Shadows. This October, he stars as Count Orlok in David Lee Fisher’s Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror.

Halloween may be over, but scary movies never go away. The latest chiller coming to streaming service Shudder is the unique ghost story Black Cab. Starring Shaun of the Dead‘s Nick Frost and directed by Bruce Goodison, Black Cab is an unconventional horror movie that harkens back to the supernatural chills of classic frights while also forging a unique story about the unknown. Boasting an original premise and a rate dramatic turn from Nick Frost, Black Cab is worth checking out.

Black Cab follows Anne (Synnøve Karlsen) and Patrick (Luke Norris) as they depart a party with their friends. With a rift between them, they chat up the odd driver of their car (Nick Frost). As the tensions begin to mount in the vehicle, Anne realizes this may not be the ride she expected. Things take a turn involving murder, ghosts, and something far more sinister. You probably think you know where Black Cab is headed, but trust me, the final destination is a detour.

I chatted about Black Cab with director Bruce Goodison and star/writer Nick Frost. Frost compared the path of his career from Shaun of the Dead twenty years ago to now how he has tried to bring elements of humor to all of his roles, and how comedy prepared him for the very dark angle of this character. Bruce Goodison discussed his love of making scary movies and the claustrophobic challenges of filming in a vehicle. They both also talked about some creepy drivers they have encountered over the years as well as whether or not this driver was inspired by anyone they have encountered in real life. Check out the full interview in the embed above.

Black Cab is now playing on Shudder. Read our review HERE.

With the absurd amount of content we’re inundated with in this era of streaming, I often find myself avoiding trailers when I can. This allows for films to come along and surprise me given my complete lack of expectations. I’d recommend taking this option when it comes to Cellar Door, the Jordana Brewster and Scott Speedman film that feels like it will be one thing and goes in an entirely different direction. What seems like supernatural hokeyness, turns into a more Fatal Attraction-style story of broken trust and murder. And as someone who has to watch a lot of indie horror for the job, I love those who do something a bit different.

I had an absolute blast talking with Jordana Brewster about Cellar Door. She had to be sure to give our other critic Alex Maidy some flack for his poor review of the film (thanks Alex) and under other circumstances, my soul would have probably escaped my body during that moment. But thankfully Jordana kept things light and we were able to get past it with a laugh. It helped that I actually got a kick out of the film. She gets into why her chemistry with Scott Speedman is so great, the most important element to get her to accept a role, and how she feels about the ending of the Fast and Furious franchise being right around the corner. This is a great talk that you won’t want to miss.

CELLAR DOOR PLOT: Looking for a fresh start after a miscarriage, a couple (Brewster and Speedman) find themselves being gifted the house of their dreams from a wealthy homeowner (Laurence Fishburne) with one caveat – they can never open the cellar door. Whether they can live without knowing triggers shocking consequences.

The Sam Raimi-produced horror flick Don’t Move has proven to be a surprisingly big hit for Netflix. It topped their Top 10 service last week, beating higher profile original films, and the word-of-mouth on this twisted thriller has been through the roof. In it, Yellowstone’s Kelsey Asbille plays Iris, a grieving young mother who is suicidal after the death of her son. Her grief puts her in the crosshairs of Finn Wittrock’s Richard, a serial killer who injects her with a paralyzing agent. She manages to escape and has to play cat and mouse with the killer while barely mobile.

We’re pretty big fans of the movie here at JoBlo, with our own critic Tyler Nichols giving it a rave review (check it out here), and while we previously spoke to the cast and directors as part of Netflix’s Halloween-themed Netflix & Chills event, our Los Angeles based man-on-the-scene Ryan Cultrera has the chance to attend the streamer’s gala premiere for the film. While there, he had the opportunity to speak to a whole bunch of people involved with the movie, including stars Kelsey Asbille and Finn Wittrock, directors Adam Schindler and Brian Nello, writers TJ Cimfel and David White, and producers Alex Lebovici, Sarah Sarandos, and Zainab Azizi. If you’re a fan of this movie, check out the video (embedded above) for a deep dive into how this thriller was conceived, financed, and shot.

The impact that Kevin Wiliamson and Wes Craven had with Scream way back in 1996 is undeniable. “Ghostface” become quite a horror legend, As well, the classic feature spawned a new group of actors to popularity. Neve Campbell, Skeet Ulrich, Courtney Cox, David Arquette, Drew Barrymore (of course), and more. The features also offered up a stand-out performance was given by Matthew Lillard as “Stu Macher.” The actor is perhaps just as memorable in the classic than the three leads who survived a few more masked psychos along the way.

The actor continued to work in many a comedy. Even still it seems that he tends to get noticed as a horror guy. Thanks to movies like Scream, Thir13en Ghosts, and now Five Nights at Freddy’s, the dude has earned his genre cred. So much so that Lillard has moved into a few other lanes with his career. Bringing his love of all things geek-centric, the actor recently launched a little something called Find Familiar Spirits. It’s a spirits company that included the popular Quest End Whiskey. And just in time for Halloween, he has a new spell to unleash. ‘Macabre’ Tequila. And each bottle comes with a very detailed and nicely packed short story by the incomparable Mike Flanagan.

Recently, we spoke with Matthew about his latest project. And yes, the conversation brought about Scream, and a whole lot of horror talk came out of it. Lillard opened up about creating Macabre and working with Flanagan and taking on different avenues with his career. And he even dropped a few words on his previous horror entries, as well as the upcoming Five Nights at Freddy’s 2. It was a terrific conversation, and if you’d like to know more, you should check out the official site for Macabre here.

It’s Halloween, perhaps the perfect time to expand your taste with something a little Macabre.
