With Thunderbolts* currently bringing MCU back in a big way (though on the smaller end), Marvel is getting ready to release their prior film on Physical Media and digital. The narrative around Captain America: Brave New World‘s reshoots has been the topic of discussion for years at this point. Was it a complete disaster that Marvel had to take over? Or was it standard practice that most of these big budget films go through? We were recently given the opportunity to get into it all, as we sat down with the director. You can check it out in the embedded video above!

I was lucky enough to talk to director Julius Onah in support of the film’s Physical/Digital release. Julius was very open about how much the reshoots on the film were blown out of proportion and how he tried to not let the media narrative get to him. Though I made sure to express my disappointment in losing Rosa Salazar as Diamondback. With Marvel being what Marvel is, they could easily bring back the Serpent Society (which was cut from the final film) so chances of us seeing that footage feels rather slim at this point.

Captain America: Brave New World Bonus Features:

 • Deleted Scenes:
 • A Heartfelt Thanks – President Ross praises Agent Taylor for her actions.
 • The Mission – Sam Wilson tries to extract information out of Agent Taylor in the boxing ring.
 • Stick Around – President Ross extends an apology and an unexpected invitation to Isaiah.
 • Assuming the Mantle – Ever since his high-flying debut in “Captain America: The Winter Soldier,” audiences around the world have known that Sam Wilson was destined for great things. Join the cast and crew as they look at Sam’s past, present, and potential future in the MCU.
 • Old Scores, New Scars – Brave New World finds Captain America locked in a battle of brains and brawn in the forms of The Leader, Red Hulk, and Sidewinder. From prosthetics to visual effects to stunt work, get the lowdown on these formidable foes and how they’re brought to life.
 • Gag Reel – Enjoy some hilarious outtakes on set with the cast and crew of Captain America: Brave New World.
 • Audio Commentary – Listen to Director Julius Onah and Director of Photography Kramer Morgenthau talk about the film

CAPTAIN AMERICA BRAVE NEW WORLD is available on 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, and DVD on May 13th, 2025.

Trekkies and Trekkers (I know there’s a difference) rejoice! After a nearly two-year wait, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is finally returning for a third season. The series is set to return on Paramount Plus with a two-episode premiere on July 17th. New episodes will drop weekly leading up to a September 11th season finale. Season four has already been greenlit and is in production, so hopefully the wait won’t be as long as it was last time.

In the third season of Strange New Worlds, “we reconnect with the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise, still under the command of Captain Pike, they face the conclusion of season two’s harrowing encounter with the Gorn. But new life and civilizations await, including a villain that will test our characters’ grit and resolve. An exciting twist on classic Star Trek, season three takes characters both new and beloved to new heights, and dives into thrilling adventures of faith, duty, romance, comedy, and mystery, with varying genres never before seen on any other Star Trek.”

Strange New Worlds seems to be the most well-liked of all Paramount’s new Star Trek Universe series, with many praising the performance of star Anson Mount as Captain Christopher Pike. He’s one of the franchise’s most tragic heroes, with him destined for a grim fate, which was memorably revealed in the classic TOS (The Original Series) two-part episode, The Menagerie. Yet, far from being gloomy or downbeat, this relentlessly sunny, optimistic show has proven to strike a chord, with them even doing fanciful things like having musical episodes. The series co-stars Rebecca Romijn, Ethan Peck (as Spock), Jess Bush, Christina Chong, Celia Rose Gooding, Melissa Navia, Babs Olusanmokun and Martin Quinn, and guest stars this season include Rhys Darby, Patton Oswalt, Cillian O’Sullivan, Melanie Scrofano and Carol Kane, plus Paul Wesley as a young Captain Kirk.

Here’s the new poster:

Riri Williams bites off more than she can chew in the new trailer for Marvel’s Ironheart https://www.joblo.com/ironheart-trailer/ https://www.joblo.com/ironheart-trailer/#respond Wed, 14 May 2025 13:38:35 +0000 https://www.joblo.com/?p=840856 Riri Williams suits up in the Iron Armor, but as smart as she is, is she ready for the responsibilities that come with being a superhero?

2022’s Black Panther: Wakanda Forever did the usual Marvel thing and laid some ground for future projects that had been announced. Other than the sequel establishing Shuri as the new Black Panther, the Ryan Coogler film also introduced a college student who would be taking up the mantle of Tony Stark with her own brand of Iron armor. “Ironheart is such a great character in publishing,” said Coogler. “In 2016, Brian Michael Bendis created a character who would be a successor of sorts to the Iron Man legacy. In the comic book, Riri Williams and Tony Stark had a relationship—she was a student at MIT who came from an almost polar opposite background as Tony, but they came together in their passion to better society. Eventually, the character gets her own identity as Ironheart, and other writers like Eve Ewing picked up from there, taking Riri Williams to Chicago.”

The new MCU series is set after the events of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. Ironheart pits technology against magic when Riri—determined to make her mark on the world—returns to her hometown of Chicago. Her unique take on building iron suits is brilliant, but in pursuit of her ambitions, she finds herself wrapped up with the mysterious yet charming Parker Robbins aka “The Hood” (Anthony Ramos). The series also stars Lyric Ross, Alden Ehrenreich, Regan Aliyah, Manny Montana, Matthew Elam and Anji White. Chinaka Hodge is head writer; episodes are directed by Sam Bailey and Angela Barnes. Executive producers include Kevin Feige, Louis D’Esposito, Brad Winderbaum, Zoie Nagelhout, Chinaka Hodge, Ryan Coogler, Sev Ohanian and Zinzi Coogler. Music is by Dara Taylor. Produced in association with Proximity Media, Ironheart launches on Disney+ June 24, 2025.

Star Dominique Thorne reveals she spoke with Robert Downey Jr. about their “iron” heroes and Iron Man Downey is rooting for her Ironheart. Thorne told Empire, “Robert Downey Jr. and I spoke just after we wrapped, and he shared some very lovely words about my journey. He told me how excited he was and that he’s rooting for it, too. I literally got two thumbs up. It’s really reassuring to know you’re not embarrassing Iron Man.” She went on to say that, while Riri is “dumpster-diving, whereas Tony Stark [was] this bajillionaire … what she’s able to accomplish is remarkable.“

Foundation has captivated audiences with its intricate world-building, stunning visuals, bold storytelling, and compelling performances. Season three continues the epic chronicle of a band of exiles on their monumental journey to save humanity and rebuild civilization amid the fall of the Galactic Empire.

Set 152 years after the events of season two, The Foundation has become increasingly established far beyond its humble beginnings while the Cleonic Dynasty’s Empire has dwindled. As both of these galactic powers forge an uneasy alliance, a threat to the entire galaxy appears in the fearsome form of a warlord known as “The Mule” whose sights are set on ruling the universe by use of physical and military force, as well as mind control. It’s anyone’s guess who will win, who will lose, who will live and who will die as Hari Seldon, Gaal Dornick, the Cleons and Demerzel play a potentially deadly game of intergalactic chess.

Season three of Foundation introduces new characters and stars, including Emmy-winner Cherry Jones, Brandon P. Ben Mendelsohn talks returning as Director Krennic for season 2 of Andor https://www.joblo.com/ben-mendelsohn-season-2-andor/ https://www.joblo.com/ben-mendelsohn-season-2-andor/#respond Thu, 01 May 2025 14:04:49 +0000 https://www.joblo.com/?p=838789 We haven't seen the last of Krennic. Rogue One's Ben Mendelsohn was ecstatic to rejoin the Empire for Andor's newest season.

The post Ben Mendelsohn talks returning as Director Krennic for season 2 of Andor appeared first on JoBlo.

Andor season 2 has premiered on Disney+ and just like the first season, the reception has been quite positive. In the review from JoBlo’s own Alex Maidy, he gives the new season a perfect 10 score, saying, “This is a fantastic season that never panders through fan service but is absolutely worth watching for Star Wars fans and non-fans alike. Andor‘s second season is amazing and only disappointing because it is the last season in this series.” While the show is a prequel to a prequel of Star Wars, this season leads right up to Rogue One and sees the return of Ben Mendelsohn in the role of the Empire’s Director Krennic.

Mendelsohn recently sat down with Variety to discuss coming back to a galaxy far, far away. When asked when he was first approached to reprise his role from Rogue One, Mendelsohn explained, “Quite a while ago, not that long after the first season. Tony just said, ‘Would you be amenable to coming back and just doing a few scenes?’ To which I was like, ‘F*ck yeah, absolutely.’ Michael Clayton is somewhere in my 25 most-loved films of all time. And Krennic and the whole Star Wars experience was a really good one for me. But I had no idea how good it was going to be. It’s taken me by joyous surprise.”

He, then, continued to expound on his reaction that he would be participating on the spin-off series, “Oh, well, Andor is such a brilliantly crafted and mature take on that universe. When these super brains decide to tackle one of the genres, like a horror genre or a science fiction genre, they just bring so much to it. The Gilroys as a family are able to do high concept stuff in a way that is really digestible and fun.”

The actor also outlined how Krennic appears in Andor as opposed to the way we see him in Rogue One. Mendelsohn explained, “When we see him in Rogue One, we see him at the pinnacle of his achievement, but we also see him at the time when the other marshals of the Empire are going, ‘That looks pretty good. I think perhaps that’s actually my department now.’ So he’s a lot more animated by that, you know, and obviously the great secret being that Galen Erso is the creator of the Death Star. Although I will never let go of the idea that I built the Death Star. It’s just it’s too good of a line. You see him in more of a halcyon period [in Andor]. This is him still very much ascendant. He’s fruitier at this period.”

Hayden Christensen & Samuel L. There are plenty of surprises to be had in a galaxy far, far away, but one that even the wisest of Jedi minds couldn’t have guessed was Darth Vader and Mace Windu teaming up. But that’s what happened at a recent 20th anniversary screening of Revenge of the Sith offered, as both Hayden Christensen and Samuel L. Jackson turned up to give attendees a little something extra for their ticket purchase.

With Revenge of the Sith back in theaters to mark its anniversary, Christensen and Jackson used the opportunity to drop in on fans at a showing in Los Angeles. While the initial reception may not have been how George Lucas wanted to cap the prequel trilogy, today it has a newfound fanbase. While Christensen came out first, it was Jackson who delivered the ultimate message to the crowd. “This is so, so, so awesome. Twenty years later, I can hardly believe that we’re still as popular — as happenin’ — as we are. I haven’t seen Hayden in a while, but so, so, so happy to come back, see him, and see all of you at the same time. Thank you all so much. We had a great time making the film down in Australia. We were hangin’ out, doin’ stuff.” Oh, you just know he wanted to drop a “motherf*cker” in there!

Jackson is a total crowd favorite, yet so is Christensen, whose Anakin Skywalker has found its audience over the years. Even still, we all know Mace Windu’s purple lightsaber is the best in all the Galaxy. Yet, as Christensen couldn’t help but notice, “I see a lot of lightsabers out here. I see a lot of red lightsabers, which truth be told is my personal favorite lightsaber color.”

Now two decades removed from the initial reception of Revenge of the Sith, Samuel L. Jackson continues to insist that there’s no evidence that Mace Windu died, using the venue as an opportunity to promote his own theory that there is still a chance for him to return, declaring, “Mace lives!”

Whether or not Windu lives or not, Revenge of the Sith most definitely does, having found a new audience as people rediscover the trilogy. And you can do the same, as Episode III is thriving in its re-release.

Sydney Sweeney was recently announced to be adapting the video game Outrun for a feature with Michael Bay directing. Outrun is an arcade racing video game franchise released by Sega. Bay will direct the project from a script by Jayson Rothwell. At the moment, Sweeney is only on board to produce, but that could change as the project moves forward with the Euphoria star attached. Plot details are being kept under wraps, but with Bay at the helm and his penchant for vehicular mayhem (as well as his new drone toy from Ambulance), grand racing action is in the cards.

It was also recently announced that a movie version of the new hit two-player co-op, Split Fiction, is now being developed into a film adaptation from the game company Hazelight Studios. The Hollywood Reporter is now revealing that Sweeney is also attached to this video game film, but this time, as the star. She is also on board as an executive producer. Wicked director Jon M. Chu will helm the film from a screenplay that is set to be written by Deadpool & Wolverine screenwriters Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick. Additionally, Mike Goldberg and Dmitri M. Johnson’s Story Kitchen and Chu’s Electric Somewhere will produce.

Spilt Fiction is “a 2025 action-adventure game developed by Hazelight Studios and published by Electronic Arts. As a cooperative multiplayer-only game, it follows authors Mio Hudson and Zoe Foster after they become imprisoned in the world of their stories when they are connected to a machine designed to steal creative ideas.” Hazelight Studios is also known for the game It Takes Two, which emphasizes two-player gameplay where you work as a team. After the popularity of It Takes Two, the film rights were acquired by Amazon in April of 2022. Story Kitchen is the company that’s bringing that game to life on Amazon and sources at the Game Developers Conference (GDC) in San Francisco confirmed that the media studio is also leading the charge in developing Split Fiction.

Split Fiction became a hit with both players and critics. It has received positive reviews and earned massive sales. According to Hazelight, the new teamwork game sold more than two million copies in the first week after its March 6 release, and that number continues to rise at an impressive rate.

If Darth Maul can survive being chopped IN HALF and plummeting down an endless chute, then Mace Windu has got to be able to shake off a few volts, a chopped off hand, and a fall off a skyscraper? Right? Samuel L. Jackson has been vocal that Mace Windu is still out there, but could Bryce Dallas Howard be the one to bring the Jedi Master back?

While speaking on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Howard said that Samuel L. Jackson has “been incredibly supportive of me, and has told me many times that he would act in something that I directed.

Howard added that she “went straight to Dave Filoni, and I was like, ‘So let’s just talk about Mace Windu and where he is, because is he dead? Is he?’” It’s all just talk at this point, but you’ve got to think that Lucasfilm has had multiple discussions about Mace Windu and whether he could (or should) be brought back. Howard has plenty of experience in the Star Wars franchise. She’s directed three episodes of The Mandalorian, and one episode each of The Book of Boba Fett and Skeleton Crew. She also voiced Yaddle in Tales of the Jedi.

Just last year, Jackson insisted that Windu was still alive. “There’s a history of one-armed, one-handed people in the Star Wars universe. So, just cause they cut my arm off and I fell out a window, doesn’t mean I’m dead,” Jackson said. “I’m a Jedi! The second most powerful Jedi in the universe, next to Yoda. So, I can float! Yeah, he’s out there.” Temuera Morrison has also expressed hope that Windu is still among the living, but only so that Boba Fett can finally take revenge. If you recall, Windu killed Jango Fett in Star Wars: Attack of the Clones in a rather gruesome fashion, decapitating him with a lightsaber in full view of young Boba Fett.

Do you think Mace Windu should be brought back, and could you see Bryce Dallas Howard as the director to do it?

Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow

The unique throwback sci-fi film Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow didn’t make the splash it was hoping for with audiences. In fact, we feel it’s an overlooked film here at JoBlo as Chris Bumbray tries to shine a light on the alien invasion film with a retrospective video. He recommends it highly by saying, “If you haven’t seen this movie, I urge you to check it out. It’s a fun, old-fashioned adventure with a great score by Edward Shearmur, who never entirely became the A-list composer he should have been. It has a bouncy pace and even an early example of post-mortem casting with Laurence Olivier playing the bad guy despite having died 13 years before this came out. Give it a shot!”

However, some movies can still find audiences late in life, and perhaps that can happen with the new physical release of Sky Captain. Blu-ray.com has announced that Shout Factory will be distributing a new special 4K remastered Blu-ray this summer. Sky Captain was written and directed by Kerry Conran and stars Gwyneth Paltrow, Jude Law, Angelina Jolie, Giovanni Ribisi, and Michael Gambon. The new two-disc 4K Blu-ray is due to hit retailers on May 27.

The description reads,
“When giant robots attack New York City, intrepid reporter Polly Perkins (Academy Award winner Gwyneth Paltrow) enlists the aid of ace aviator and old flame Joseph ‘Sky Captain’ Sullivan (two-time Academy Award nominee Jude Law) to stop a plot to destroy the world before it’s too late. Co-starring Academy Award winner Angelina Jolie, Sky Captain And The World of Tomorrow will thrill and amaze you right through to the action-packed finale.”

Jurassic World Rebirth

The Jurassic series is on its third feature film iteration after the Park and World trilogies. And while the legendary John Williams ended his run in the franchise along with Spielberg after The Lost World, his themes have been too iconic not to be included in the proceeding films. While Don Davis stepped into the composer role with Jurassic Park III, Michael Giacchino would become the resident composer for the initial Jurassic World movies. Jurassic World Rebirth is aiming to return the franchise to its roots and the new composer, two-time Oscar-winner Alexandre Desplat, talks with Entertainment Weekly about paying homage to Williams with his score.

Desplat stated, “Every score John Williams has written has become an iconic score, so it’s quite a daunting task.” The composer of the Harry Potter movies and The Shape of Water continued to say, “At first, you’re excited, then panic comes along because you realize that you’re taking over from a fabulous composer who invented so many great things that the whole planet knows. You try to find your way through that.” For Rebirth, Desplat says he tried to balance making something new, while using “quotes of John’s music.”

He added, “You try to make it your own, and at the same time, pay homage to Williams’ music, and try to find your own way through that by inventing new themes and ideas, but staying in the same artistic zone as the scores of the franchise.” Jurassic World Rebirth director Gareth Edwards gave his own statement to EW, saying, “Like the epic dinosaurs in our film, Alexandre is the last of his kind, a rare species with the talent and knowledge to orchestrate his own classical scores. If studios could clone him, they would. Until science finds a way, I’ll happily settle for those goosebump-inducing memories of hearing his music at Abbey Road as he conducted a one-hundred-piece orchestra for our ‘little’ Jurassic movie. Chills.”

The new characters are played by the likes of Scarlett Johansson (Black Widow), Jonathan Bailey (Bridgerton), Mahershala Ali (Green Book), Rupert Friend (Obi-Wan Kenobi), and Manuel Garcia-Rulfo (The Lincoln Lawyer) – all of whom had their roles directly offered to them. Luna Blaise (Manifest), on the other hand, had to (according to Deadline) “beat out a number of actors” to land her role. David Iacono of The Summer I Turned Pretty, child actress Audrina Miranda, Philippine Velge (Station Eleven), Ed Skrein (Deadpool), and Béchir Sylvain (Diarra from Detroit) are also in the cast.

Frank Marshall and Patrick Crowley are producing the film for Kennedy/Marshall. Steven Spielberg is an executive producer through Amblin Entertainment. Universal’s executive vice president of production development, Sara Scott, and creative executive, Jacqueline Garell, oversee the project.

New Star Wars series in the works from Carlton Cuse & Nick Cuse https://www.joblo.com/carlton-cuse-star-wars-series/ https://www.joblo.com/carlton-cuse-star-wars-series/#respond Mon, 21 Apr 2025 21:17:05 +0000 https://www.joblo.com/?p=836960 Lost showrunner Carlton Cuse is in early development on a new Star Wars TV series together with his son, Nick.

Star Wars Cuse

Join me, and together we can rule the galaxy as father and son. Carlton Cuse is teaming up with his son, Nick, to develop a brand-new Star Wars TV series for Lucasfilm. As you might expect, there are no details about the potential series at this time, but Cuse has a number of TV credits to his name. In addition to Lost, he’s known for Nash Bridges, Bates Motel, Jack Ryan, and more. Nick is no slouch in the TV department, having written for The Leftovers, Watchmen, and Station Eleven. The news was first reported by The Insneider.

Although Disney has been slowing down the development of new Star Wars projects, there’s still plenty to look forward to, including the highly anticipated second season of Andor. The new season will premiere tomorrow and takes place “as the horizon of war draws near and Cassian becomes a key player in the Rebel Alliance. Everyone will be tested and, as the stakes rise, the betrayals, sacrifices and conflicting agendas will become profound.

In his review, our own Alex Maidy said that although expectations are incredibly high for the new season of Andor, he doesn’t think fans will be disappointed. “Andor is a top-notch espionage series and a powerful drama that rivals many non-genre shows on the air, but manages to deliver the best Star Wars story in decades without needing a single lightsaber or Force-sensitive character,” Maidy wrote. “Andor‘s first season may have worked even better had it been approached in the format of this season, which will easily rank as one of the best Star Wars projects of all time and an equally impressive work of television. Diego Luna has done his character service in ways Solo and Obi-Wan Kenobi tried but failed to do. This is a fantastic season that never panders through fan service but is absolutely worth watching for Star Wars fans and non-fans alike. Andor‘s second season is amazing and only disappointing because it is the last season in this series.” You can check out the rest of his review right here.

Other upcoming projects include The Mandalorian and Grogu, which will hit theaters on May 22, 2026. Some new footage from the movie was recently screened at Star Wars Celebration. Shawn Levy’s project with Ryan Gosling was also confirmed and given a title—Star Wars: Starfighter—and a May 28, 2027 release date.

How do you feel about Carlton Cuse (and Nick Cuse) working on a new Star Wars TV series?

Hayden Christensen will return as Anakin Skywalker for the second season of Ahsoka, having reprised his character for a handful of episodes in season one.

Christensen made the announcement at this year’s Star Wars Celebration in Tokyo, Japan, an event that has already brought other huge news from a galaxy far, far away. Towards the end of the Ahsoka panel, Christensen emerged from the shadows to declare, “There’s not much I can share but Anakin will be back for season two.”

While we loved the first season of Ahsoka and critics mostly heaped praise, fans were far from gung-ho about the entirety of it, as it holds a 64% audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Still, we can all agree that it’s awesome seeing Hayden Christensen back in the role of Anakin Skywalker. Christensen had a heavy burden when he first played the role in Attack of the Clones and next Revenge of the Sith, taking on a lot of the hate that poor Jake Lloyd did with The Phantom Menace.

But it’s great that Christensen has embraced Anakin in the past few years, stepping back into the role with both Ahsoka and fellow Disney+ series Obi-Wan Kenobi. It, too, says a lot about the fans that they have welcomed him back to the Star Wars universe. On his future, Christensen has said, “I would love to get to do more, and I’d love to get to continue with Star Wars and we’ll see. I don’t know what the future holds, and if such an opportunity presents itself, I’ll be there with a big smile on my face. And if it doesn’t, I feel really grateful for getting to come back…It has just been really nice to get to come back and do more with the character that has meant so much to me and that I really care about. And that has had such a significant impact on my life.”

While we don’t have an official release date for season two of Ahsoka just yet, we do know that it is set to begin production next week in the United Kingdom.

Did you like the first season of Ahsoka? What do you want to see the second season explore?

The final film in Sony Animation‘s Spider-Verse trilogy, Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, is swinging into production. Franchise vets Bob Persichetti and Justin K. Thompson will direct the highly anticipated threequel, striving for perfection after the first two films helped Spider-Verse become one of the most sought-after animated franchises ever. The last entry, Across the Spider-Verse, was released in 2023, but fans have a lengthy wait for Beyond the Spider-Verse, which is slated to release on June 4, 2027. According to Deadline, while Steinfeld promotes her new film, Sinners, she spoke with MTV about the upcoming animated movie.

Steinfeld told Josh Horowitz, “We’re well into that thing.” And while the actress who’s worked with Marvel on a few occasions didn’t want to accidentally spill any details, she simply stated, “You’ve gotta trust the process.” Then, she continued, “If there’s one thing I’ve learned with that — it’s that. You put it in their hands and you’re gonna end up with something masterful. So just gotta go with it.” Phil Lord, Chris Miller, Amy Pascal, and Avi Arad return as Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse producers, with Jinko Gotoh producing. Aditya Sood and Christina Steinberg are executive producers, and Jessica Berri is a co-producer. Phil Lord and Christopher Miller wrote the script alongside David Callaham, together performing the task of webbing up all the loose ends to one of animation’s most robust, multi-verse-spanning plots.

Meanwhile, Steinfeld is starring in the new Ryan Coogler film, Sinners, which stars Michael B. Jordan, and the trailers have showcased how the normally reserved actress has embraced a more provocative nature for the horror film. According to People, Steinfeld addressed her fans (who would skew on the younger side) and said in a newsletter, “… This role is far removed from what I’ve done, but that’s part of what drew me to it! I feel like I’m stepping into my own more and more as I get older, and this role mirrors that.” She revealed that she took the role without hesitation, “The minute I heard Ryan Coogler, I was in. Then I read his script and was like, ‘Holy s—, this feels like a massive undertaking.’ The story is so complex and layered,” wrote Steinfeld. “… I was so fortunate and honored to even be remotely considered.”

The Sith Lord character of Darth Maul was seemingly a rare element of Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace that had been scrutinized by audiences. In fact, fans of Star Wars wished the character had more time to shine and clamored for more from him. Luckily, Lucasfilm brought him back for The Clone Wars series, as well as Star Wars Rebels. The character even made a surprise cameo appearance in the spin-off Solo: A Star Wars Story. Now that Star Wars Celebration is underway, according to The Hollywood Reporter, this morning saw the announcement of a new Darth Maul chapter.

A new animated series that will be centered around Darth Maul was revealed to be heading for Disney+. The show is said to be titled Maul: Shadow Lord. Lucasfilm CCO Dave Filoni made the announcement with the VP of the animation division, Athena Portillo, during a panel that celebrated the 20th anniversary of Lucasfilm Animation. Filoni and Portillo would reflect on the animation department’s past projects, and as they moved on to the upcoming projects, they revealed a trailer for the show on the audience without preamble. The reaction in the room became uproarious.

Per THR, “The show, which will tell the story of Maul teaching an apprentice, will debut in 2026.” While martial arts actor Ray Park brought Maul’s incredible fighting ability to life in The Phantom Menace, the distinct voice of English actor and comedian Peter Serafinowicz was provided for the character in the dialogue scenes. Since then, voice actor Sam Witwer has provided the dialogue for Maul in the majority of other appearances, which includes The Clone Wars, Rebels and several video games. Witwer will be reprising the role as Darth Maul for the new animated series.

It was also recently announced that Shawn Levy’s movie in the galaxy far, far away will be titled Star Wars: Starfighter and will be lead by Ryan Gosling. In a statement, Disney said, Star Wars: Starfighter, which will be directed by Shawn Levy and star Ryan Gosling, is a standalone adventure taking place approximately five years after the events of 2019’s Star Wars: Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker. The film, which will begin production this Fall, is an entirely new adventure featuring all-new characters set in a period of time that has not been explored on screen yet.”

Lanterns director on how much the HBO series will be like True Detective https://www.joblo.com/lanterns-true-detective/ https://www.joblo.com/lanterns-true-detective/#respond Thu, 17 Apr 2025 22:28:14 +0000 https://www.joblo.com/?p=836521 Lanterns has been compared to True Detective since it was first announced, but how much will it really be like the series?

The post Lanterns director on how much the HBO series will be like True Detective appeared first on JoBlo.

Lanterns, True Detective

Since its beginning, Lanterns has billed itself as a mystery series similar to True Detective. Speaking with THR, Lanterns director James Hawes believes those comparisons are valid, but adds that the Green Lantern series will have a little more humour.

Talking tone, it looks and feels rooted. You meet two guys, but there is wit and comedy to it that you would not expect in True Detective,” Hawes said. “It is, in many ways, a buddy cop structure with travel in the story time, to and fro, that is really sophisticated. Chris Mundy has done the most amazing job with the team there, and so I think [the True Detective comparison] is valid. People will still go, ‘What were you talking about?’ to some extent, but I would also bring in No Country for Old MenFargo and things that have that Americana heart to them. There’s a wry humor, and so there definitely is more wit and humor than there is in True Detective.

Hawes added that he “wanted this world to be rooted, and while there’s only so far you can go with rooting characters in a show about Green Lantern, they are. This is a world where we accept that the Green Lanterns exist and aliens exist. So the rest of it is played straight and in the world as we know it.” The series follows Hal Jordan (Kyle Chandler) and John Stewart (Aaron Pierre), “two intergalactic cops drawn into a dark, earth-based mystery as they investigate a murder in the American heartland.

The rest of the Lanterns cast includes Kelly MacDonald (Boardwalk Empire) as Sheriff Kerry, a “no-nonsense woman deeply devoted to her family and close-knit town,” Garret Dillahunt (Fear the Walking Dead) as William Macon, a modern cowboy described as “a self-righteous, conspiracy-minded man who masks his ruthless ambition behind a charming and calculated facade,” Poorna Jagannathan (The Night Of) as Zoe, who is described as “effortlessly confident and poised in any setting, even those where she stands out. She is every bit as composed and cunning as the influential men around her,” and Ulrich Thomsen (Banshee) as Sinestro. Jason Ritter (Matlock) also joined the cast as Billy Macon, “a good-looking charmer who does his father’s (Dillahunt) bidding. Capitalizing on his family’s reputation, he clings to his small-town ego and has everything to lose.“ Nathan Fillion will also reprise the role of Guy Gardner in Lanterns. The character will introduce himself in James Gunn’s upcoming Superman movie.

Marvel Studios has just shared the newest trailer for the anticipated introduction of one the brand’s more famous properties — The Fantastic Four. The film stars Pedro Pascal as Reed Richards, aka Mr. Fantastic; Vanessa Kirby as Sue Storm, aka the Invisible Woman; Joseph Quinn as Johnny Storm, aka the Human Torch, Ebon Moss-Bachrach as Ben Grimm, aka the Thing, and Julia Garner as the Shalla-Bal version of the Silver Surfer. Additionally, the great Ralph Ineson will play Galactus, the Devourer of Worlds. Paul Walter HauserJohn Malkovich, and Natasha Lyonne also joined the cast of the retro-future movie.

The official synopsis for The Fantastic Four: First Steps: Set against the vibrant backdrop of a 1960s-inspired, retro-futuristic world, “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” introduces Marvel’s First Family—Reed Richards/Mister Fantastic, Sue Storm/Invisible Woman, Johnny Storm/Human Torch, and Ben Grimm/The Thing as they face their most daunting challenge yet. Forced to balance their roles as heroes with the strength of their family bond, they must defend Earth from a ravenous space god called Galactus (Ralph Ineson) and his enigmatic Herald, Silver Surfer (Julia Garner). And if Galactus’ plan to devour the entire planet and everyone on it weren’t bad enough, it suddenly gets very personal.

The Fantastic Four: First Steps will launch Phase Six of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and is being directed by Matt Shakman (WandaVision) from a script by Eric Pearson, Josh Friedman, Jeff Kaplan, and Ian Springer. Shakman has teased that the movie will be unlike anything we’ve seen from Marvel so far. “It’s different in so many ways,” Shakman said. “I wish I could be specific. I wish I could say more. But we are doing things very differently from a story standpoint, from an approach to the filmmaking standpoint, that really fits the material. I wish I could say more. I would love to, but I can’t. But I think it’s going to be unlike anything you’ve seen before, and certainly unlike anything at Marvel that you’ve seen before.”

The film will hit theaters on July 25.

The first season of Legendary’s MonsterVerse TV series Monarch: Legacy of Monsters ran on Apple TV+ from November 2023 into January 2024 (you can read our own Alex Maidy’s review of the first batch of episodes HERE), and while Godzilla was an important figure in that season, it wrapped up with an episode that indicated Kong might be taking the spotlight if there were to be a follow-up. A few months after the season finale, it was confirmed that Monarch: Legacy of Monsters season 2 was a sure thing, then filming began in November of 2024. The first season’s star Wyatt Russell is back for season 2, and while speaking to Collider, Russell teased that there are “more monsters” in the new episodes.

Monarch: Legacy of Monsters is the latest chapter in Legendary Entertainment’s MonsterVerse series, which currently consists of Godzilla, Kong: Skull Island, Godzilla: King of the Monsters, Godzilla vs. KongGodzilla x Kong: The New Empire, and the Netflix animated series Skull Island.

The ten episode first season was set after “the thunderous battle between Godzilla and the Titans that leveled San Francisco and the shocking revelation that monsters are real” (as seen in Godzilla 2014). It tracks two siblings following in their father’s footsteps to uncover their family’s connection to the secretive organization known as Monarch. Clues lead them into the world of monsters and ultimately down the rabbit hole to Army officer Lee Shaw, taking place in the 1950s and half a century later where Monarch is threatened by what Shaw knows. The dramatic saga – spanning three generations – reveals buried secrets and the ways that epic, earth-shattering events can reverberate through our lives.

The cast includes Anna Sawai, Kurt Russell, Wyatt Russell, Kiersey Clemons, Ren Watabe, Mari Yamamoto, Anders Holm, Joe Tippett, and Elisa Lasowski. Season 2 brings the addition of Prey star Amber Midthunder.

Wyatt Russell told Collider, “Season 2 of Monarch was really interesting to be able to get to do because we had to expand on certain themes and stuff that we found in the first season to really work. I haven’t been briefed on what I can tease and what I can’t. I can say that the mystery deepens. There are more monsters that arrive that are really fun to explore in the story. We wanted to level it up, I guess you could say, and in the Monarch way, ratchet up the stakes of the relationships as well. I can tease that the relationships really get ratcheted up.” Sawai has previously said that season 2 takes the characters “on a huge journey. We’ll go in different directions, we lose some people, we find some people…

Monarch: Legacy of Monsters comes our way from Legendary Television. Matt Shakman (WandaVision) directed the first two episodes. Black, Fraction, and Shakman executive produce the series with Joby Harold and Tory Tunnell from Safehouse Pictures, as well as Andy Goddard, Brad Van Arragon, and Andrew Colville. Hiro Matsuoka and Takemasa Arita executive produce on behalf of Toho Co., Ltd., the owner of the Godzilla character.

Despite the unfortunate recent news of its cancellation, Netflix‘s epic fantasy series The Sandman returns for its second season in two Volumes this July: Volume 1 premieres July 3, 2025 (6 episodes) and Volume 2 premieres July 24, 2025 (5 episodes). The new season features a cast that includes Tom Sturridge, Kirby Howell-Baptiste, Mason Alexander Park, Donna Preston, Esmé Creed-Miles, Adrian Lester, Barry Sloane, Patton Oswalt, Vivienne Acheampong, Gwendoline Christie, Jenna Coleman, Ferdinand Kingsley, Stephen Fry, Asim Chaudhry, Sanjeev Bhaskar, Razane Jammal, Ruairi O’ Connor, Freddie Fox, Clive Russell, Laurence O’Fuarain, Ann Skelly, Douglas Booth, Jack Gleeson, Indya Moore, and Steve Coogan.

The official synopsis reads,
“After a fateful reunion with his family, Dream of the Endless (Tom Sturridge) must face one impossible decision after another as he attempts to save himself, his kingdom, and the waking world from the epic fallout of his past misdeeds. To make amends, Dream must confront longtime friends and foes, gods, monsters, and mortals. But the path to forgiveness is full of unexpected twists and turns, and true absolution may cost Dream everything. Based on the beloved award-winning DC comic series, the second season of THE SANDMAN will tell Dream’s story arc in full to its thrilling conclusion.”

Showrunner and writer Allan Heinberg teased what fans can expect from the upcoming season, “The Endless are supposed to be just that: endless. They’re meant to go on in perpetuity. They’re not supposed to change. But change is, of course, inevitable and essential to all life. Which is something Dream refuses to accept at first. And when one of the Endless changes, it has colossal ramifications for all of us.”

The Sandman was developed for Netflix by Neil Gaiman, David S. Goyer, and Allan Heinberg, all of whom serve as executive producers on the show. Heinberg is also the showrunner. Every episode of season 2 is being directed by Jamie Childs. The writers on the show also include Ameni Rozsa, Alex Newman-Wise, Austin Guzman, Shadi Petosky, Jim Campolongo, Vanessa Benton, Jay Franklin, Greg Goetz and Marina Marlens. The series is based on the DC Comic THE SANDMAN by Neil Gaiman, Sam Keith, and Mike Dringenberg.

Alex Garland is really cooking as of late. Over the last year, he’s dropped a provocative hypothetical scenario with Civil War and has just co-directed another unconventional war movie, Warfare, which he made in collaboration with Iraq War veteran Ray Mendoza. He also reunites with Danny Boyle for the now hotly anticipated post-apocalyptic sequel 28 Years Later. Garland recently sat down with GQ to reflect on his notable films and he would talk about a movie that he isn’t credited on as a director — 2012’s Dredd. Garland would reveal that he had actually directed a significant amount of the film for complicated reasons.

When talking about his directorial debut, Ex Machina, Garland revealed that it is a bit of a fib that the movie is considered his first directing job. Garland said, “In truth, what happened, just to be candid about it, look, a lot of time has passed, I did end up on some films essentially doing ghost-directing.” Fast forward to the segment on Dredd. Garland prefaces, “In TV, the writer/showrunner has the kind of authorship button handed to them, and in film, it’s the director who has that. They can’t both be true simultaneously.” Then, he continued, “Television is not so much different from film that magically it’s the writer/showrunner and now magically it’s the director, and some people I’m working with, their principle was ‘Well, why don’t we take that concept from television and use it in film.’ For complicated reasons that just didn’t work. It just created a bloody mess.”

In a roundabout way, Garland admits that he had to take over for Dredd‘s Pete Travis and conveys that he did it begrudgingly while giving Travis some due credit, “Within this is a disservice to Pete Travis, who is the credited director, who did some fundamental/crucial things, and he deserves that title. He was put in an absolutely impossible situation, and retrospectively, the longer I’ve worked, the more ridiculous I think it was. After the experience of making ‘Dredd’, what I said is I’m not doing that again. Just let me do that job, let’s simpify this.”

You can view this segment below with the timecode cued.

Mikey Madison passes on role in Shawn Levy’s Star Wars movie https://www.joblo.com/mikey-madison-star-wars/ https://www.joblo.com/mikey-madison-star-wars/#respond Wed, 16 Apr 2025 21:53:38 +0000 https://www.joblo.com/?p=836345 Mikey Madison was being considered for a role in Shawn Levy's Star Wars movie, but the Anora actress has passed on the project.

After winning the Academy Award for Best Actress for Anora, Mikey Madison has her pick of projects, and for a brief moment, one of those was Star Wars. According to The InSneider, Madison was rumoured to be in early talks to join the cast of Shawn Levy’s upcoming Star Wars movie, but Variety has now reported that the actress has passed on the role. (UPDATE: The InSneider reports, “I was told by a well-placed source that Madison turned her back on Star Wars not for any creative reason, but simply for financial reasons. … the two sides were apparently far apart in terms of money.”)

In addition to Star Wars, Sneider said that Madison was also considering an offer to star in Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil movie. Now that she’s passed on Star Wars, perhaps Resident Evil could be her next project.

Sneider added that Levy’s Star Wars movie is “currently casting the lead role, which is a 15-year-old boy, as well as the boy’s mother, plus two villains.” There’s another significant female character in the mix, which is the role Madison was being eyed for.

Levy’s Star Wars movie is expected to star Ryan Gosling, although it’s not clear who the actor will play. Previous reports have stated that this could be Levy’s next project, as well as the next Star Wars movie to enter production, with principal photography kicking off as early as this fall. If Levy really is in the midst of casting the film, a fall shoot is entirely possible.

Levy has been working on the script with Jonathan Tropper, with whom he collaborated on This Is Where I Leave You and The Adam Project. The director has previously stated that the project will still feel like a Shawn Levy movie. “When Kathy Kennedy brought me on board to make a Star Wars movie, her central mandate to me was ‘I want a Shawn Levy movie. I want a story and a tone that reflects you and your taste and what you bring to your movies — with a Star Wars story,’” Levy explained in 2023. “So I have felt extremely empowered. We are in early days, unfortunately, because the development process was abruptly paused [due to the WGA strike], but I feel very empowered to trust my instincts in the development of this story and movie.

Would you have liked to have seen Mikey Madison in a Star Wars movie?

Last week, we shared the news that Full Moon is bringing their 1992 film Bad Channels and 1990 film Crash and Burn to Blu-ray, with copies available through their site FullMoonHorror.com and available for pre-order on Amazon. (Links can be found in our article.) Now, we have more Full Moon Blu-ray news to share, as the company will be giving director Albert Pyun‘s 1993 sci-fi horror film Arcade a Blu-ray release on July 15th! Copies can be pre-ordered through Amazon at THIS LINK.

Directed by Pyun from a screenplay by David S. Goyer (and a story by Full Moon founder Charles Band), Arcade has the following synopsis: All the kids in town are dying to play the hot new video game “Arcade”. Trouble is once you play the game you can kiss reality good-bye. Arcade has seven levels of excitement, adventure, and terror for its players. The game transports you to another world with its stunning graphics, thrilling sound effects, and virtual reality simulation. It is the ultimate experience in a video game. But excitement like this doesn’t come cheaply – when you battle with Arcade you’re putting your life on the line. The kids have accepted the challenge and are absorbed into the game. Only Alex and Nick realize that these mysterious disappearances are linked to Arcade. They must battle the game, alone.

The film stars Megan Ward (Trancers II), Peter Billingsley (A Christmas Story), John de Lancie (Star Trek: The Next Generation), Sharon Farrell (Lone Wolf McQuade), Seth Green (Can’t Hardly Wait), A.J. Langer (The People Under the Stairs), and Bryan Dattilo (Days of Our Lives).

Full Moon brings Arcade to Blu-ray with the following special features: – Audio Commentary with Charles Band and Megan Ward – VideoZone – Original Trailer – John de Lancie Interview – Rare VFX Reel – Full Moon Trailers

Arcade premiered in 1993 ahead of a March 1994 release – which was later than originally intended, because the movie had to be delayed while the special effects were reworked because Disney threatened to sue Full Moon, feeling the original special effects were too similar to the Disney film Tron.

Are a fan of Arcade, and are you going to be adding this Full Moon classic to your Blu-ray collection? Let us know by leaving a comment below.

The Charlize Theron action film The Old Guard was a hit for the Netflix streaming service when it was released in 2020, but the sequel The Old Guard 2 has had an unexpectedly bumpy ride while making its way out into the world. Based on a graphic novel series created by Greg Rucka and Leandro Fernández, The Old Guard was scripted by Rucka and directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood. The film introduced viewers to a covert group of tight-knit mercenaries with a mysterious inability to die who have fought to protect the mortal world for centuries. When the team is recruited to take on an emergency mission and their extraordinary abilities are suddenly exposed, it’s up to Andy and Nile, the newest soldier to join their ranks, to help the group eliminate the threat of those who seek to replicate and monetize their power by any means necessary. The Old Guard 2 will be heading for screens on July 2 on Netflix and the Charlize Theron film just received its rating from the MPA. The Old Guard 2 will be Rated R “for sequences of graphic violence, and some language.”

Meanwhile, the MPA has also issued a rating for another big-budget action sci-fi — the upcoming Marvel Studios film Thunderbolts*. Thunderbolts* has received a rating of PG-13 “for strong violence, language thematic elements, and some suggestive and drug references.”

This entry into the MCU has an Avengers-esque hook with various characters from previous entries uniting for a team-up. However, the characters featured are more anti-heroes with lesser popularity than the original core group of Avengers characters. So, it remains to be seen how this combination will fare. One interesting aspect of this film is that it’s being helmed by Jake Schreier, who is known for the A24-produced Netflix show Beef and 2012’s Robot & Frank.

Florence Pugh, who dipped her toe in Marvel films with Black Widow, said that Thunderbolts* has a plucky attitude to it. “It ended up becoming this quite badass indie, A24-feeling assassin movie with Marvel superheroes,” Pugh told Empire. Schreier also said that the studio encouraged him to add “something different” to this movie. He stated, “There’s a certain amount of that Beef tone in it, that does feel different. There’s an emotional darkness that we brought to this that is resonant but doesn’t come at the expense of comedy.”

The original, unaltered technicolor print of Star Wars that George Lucas banned will screen again after 47 years https://www.joblo.com/star-wars-original-print-bfi/ https://www.joblo.com/star-wars-original-print-bfi/#respond Wed, 16 Apr 2025 13:17:56 +0000 https://www.joblo.com/?p=836147 The BFI Film Festival specially arranged with Lucasfilm a special screening of the film print from its initial 70s run.

Star Wars

The original 1977 cut of Star Wars is different in a lot of subtle ways, yet spoke volumes to many audiences and fans. It was not yet part of a franchise. It wasn’t even called Episode IV or A New Hope yet — only known simply as Star Wars. The trilogy would eventually go through many changes, which started with the added titles in the opening crawl and George Lucas would only keep going with the changes from there as his philosophy had seemingly been, “Films are not finished, but abandoned.”

However, for film purists, that original, unaltered version of Star Wars is a Holy Grail of sorts and The Hollywood Reporter is revealing that this version of the film that George Lucas had banned from theaters will be projected onto the screen once again. Unfortunately, it will only be available for a few individuals who are lucky enough to be attending a film festival in the U.K. The Telegraph reports that the rare, original technicolor print of Star Wars will be screening at the British Film Institute’s Film on Film Festival in June. This print will be shown for the first time since December of 1978, although, there have been copies that have made the rounds on home video.

Lucas banned the film in favor of his definitive visions that started in 1997 with the Special Editions. Lucasfilm would only ever allow the newest cuts with its many alterations to be screened. Per THR, “BFI had to negotiate with Disney and Lucasfilm for the rights for a back-to-back screening on the festival’s opening night. This particular BFI print has been stored for four decades at a temperature of 23 degrees Fahrenheit to preserve its quality, so it should look rather pristine.”

Ticket sales are yet to be announced, but it’s a good bet that this screening would likely sell out quickly. The original Star Wars isn’t the only film from the series that will be shown this year. A couple of months ago, it was announced that Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith will be back in theaters on April 25 to celebrate the film’s 20th anniversary. The film will run in U.S. theaters and select international territories for one week only and will be available in several formats, including, for the first time, 4DX. 4DX features high-tech motion chairs that sync with over 21 effects, all designed to complement the narrative of the film.

“Chicken Jockey” has become a public trigger for kids thanks to A Minecraft Movie, with the reactions sparking the target audience of the literal blockbuster to go absolutely insane when the scene arrives. And while some of the kids are just having fun and giving a little audience participation, others are raising hell and even being escorted out by police, forcing some theaters to enact a “no unaccompanied minors” policy. Director Jared Hess found the rowdy theater reactions to be amusing. He said, “It’s funny because I think it’s just literally cheering and throwing popcorn, which is so funny to me that cops are getting called for popcorn. Yeah, it’s hilarious. I’ve seen so many funny videos. It’s great, especially when people are climbing on their friends’ shoulders and standing up and cheering for those moments. It’s like this crazy anticipation. But, man, I’m just glad people are making memories with their friends and families.” Jack Black would get in on the fun as somewhat of an ironic instigator as Variety reports that the Minecraft Movie star personally showed up to a theater, dresses as a theater owner, and warned the audience against acting chaotic.

A viral video shows Black surprising an audience at a screening and telling them, “No throwing popcorn! And absolutely no chicken jockeys!” When Black was revealed to the crowd, they erupted into applause and the comedic actor continued, “Oh yeah! I am Steve. Are you ready to rock? Ladies and gentleman please enjoy, A Minecraft Movie. Roll the projector!”

Now that A Minecraft Movie is a bonafide viral hit thanks to the Chicken Jockey and a number of other fan-favorite scenes, no doubt it will continue its impressive box office haul. So far, it has already taken in around $200 million domestically and will likely end up as one of the highest-grossing movies of the year based on its performance so far. As expected, A Minecraft Movie dominated the box office this weekend. It only fell a modest 51% in week two for $80.6 million over the three-day weekend, which is about what we predicted earlier this week. It’s a terrific showing for a movie no one seemed sure there was an audience for, but it has seemingly grabbed the cultural zeitgeist in a way that’s hard to reverse engineer. It’s undoubtedly a huge win for Warner Bros, with them also opening the buzzy Ryan Coogler vampire epic, Sinners, this coming weekend. If they get two hits in a row, suddenly their iffy box office track record for 2025 will start to look much better.

Here’s video Jack Black’s appearance at the A Minecraft Movie screening:

Toho to spend $105 million on Godzilla projects, including the Godzilla Minus One follow-up https://www.joblo.com/toho-godzilla-globalization/ https://www.joblo.com/toho-godzilla-globalization/#respond Tue, 15 Apr 2025 14:07:26 +0000 https://www.joblo.com/?p=835963 Japanese studio Toho is investing $1 billion into a globalization strategy, setting aside $105 million for Godzilla projects

The post Toho to spend $105 million on Godzilla projects, including the Godzilla Minus One follow-up appeared first on JoBlo.

]]>

Back in 2023, Toho released a new Godzilla film, titled Godzilla Minus One (read our review HERE), in Japan on November 3rd, which happens to be Godzilla Day, the anniversary of the 1954 release of the original Godzilla movie. To celebrate the anniversary last year, they announced that they’ve given the greenlight to a new Godzilla movie that will be written and directed by Godzilla Minus One mastermind Takashi Yamazaki, who will also be handling the visual effects. Now, Bloomberg has revealed that Toho will be investing 120 billion yen ($1.2 billion) over the next three years to accelerate its globalization, and 15 billion of those yen (or about $105 million) will be going toward Godzilla projects, including the Godzilla Minus One follow-up!

It’s not clear how large the budget of Yamazaki’s new Godzilla movie will be. It has previously been confirmed that it will have a higher budget than Godzilla Minus One, which was reportedly made on a budget in the 10 to 15 million range. In addition to the new movie, the 15 billion yen Toho has set aside for Godzilla will also be used to make video games, merchandise, and attractions.

As for the rest of the 120 billion yet, Toho is planning to “explore content and intellectual property deals and other initiatives.” In spring 2026, they will be launching a membership service called TOHO-ONE, “which will provide access to cinemas, plays, merchandise and games on a digital platform.” Bloomberg notes that Toho is shifting their focus on the global market “as domestic growth is expected to slow over the coming decades due to an aging population. It aims to increase its overseas sales ratio from 10% to 30% by its 100th anniversary in 2032.”

Godzilla Minus One saw an already devastated postwar Japan facing a new threat in the form of Godzilla. Toho’s Koji Ueda provided the synopsis: “Set in a post-war Japan, Godzilla Minus One will once again show us a Godzilla that is a terrifying and overwhelming force, which you already get a sense of from the teaser trailer and poster. The concept is that Japan, which had already been devastated by the war, faces a new threat with Godzilla, bringing the country into the ‘minus.’“ The film stars Ryunosuke Kamiki, Minami Hamabe, Yuki Yamada, Munetaka Aoki, Hidetaka Yoshioka, Sakura Ando, and Kuranosuke Sasaki, with music by Naoki Sato. Interestingly, one of Yamazaki’s previous credits is the 2007 film Always: Sunset on Third Street 2, which features a Godzilla cameo in a fantasy sequence.

Details on Yamazaki’s follow-up have not been revealed, but the filmmaker was always open about the fact that he was hoping to get the chance to make a sequel. He has said, “I would certainly like to see what the sequel would look like. I know that Shikishima’s war seems over, and we’ve reached this state of peace and calm – but perhaps [it’s the] calm before the storm, and the characters have not yet been forgiven for what has been imposed upon them. … I don’t know that anyone has pulled off a more serious tone of kaiju-versus-kaiju with human drama, and that challenge is something that I’d like to explore. When you have movies that feature [kaiju battles], I think it’s very easy to put the spotlight and the camera on this massive spectacle, and it detaches itself from the human drama component.” He went on to say that he would have to “make sure that the human drama and whatever’s happening between [the] kaiju both have meaning, and both are able to affect one another in terms of plot development.

What do you think of Toho investing so much money into a globalization strategy and Godzilla projects? Are you looking forward to the Godzilla Minus One follow-up? Let us know by leaving a comment below.

Cloverfield (2008) Revisited – Horror Movie Review https://www.joblo.com/cloverfield-revisited/ https://www.joblo.com/cloverfield-revisited/#respond Tue, 15 Apr 2025 14:05:52 +0000 https://www.joblo.com/?p=835959 The Revisited series looks back at the 2008 creature feature Cloverfield, directed by Matt Reeves and produced by J.J. Abrams

In the grand tradition of cinematic monsters, America has given us some absolute legends: King Kong, the T-Rex from Jurassic Park, and whatever that thing was from The Mist that made everyone give up on life. But in 2008, J.J. Abrams, Matt Reeves, and Drew Goddard decided to throw their own beast into the ring with Cloverfield, a found-footage monster movie that came out of nowhere, scared the hell out of us, and left us with more questions than answers. But how did this shaky behemoth come to be? And why, after all these years, does it still stand tall (unlike most of the buildings in the film)? Grab your handheld camera, whisper cryptic things into the lens, and let’s take a deep dive into the glorious madness that is Cloverfield. And perhaps answer the biggest question of all… why is it even called Cloverfield?

The origin story of Cloverfield begins in a place no one would expect: a Japanese toy store. In 2006, J.J. Abrams was promoting Mission: Impossible III in Japan when he wandered into a shop filled with Godzilla figures. Seeing an entire aisle dedicated to the king of kaiju made Abrams realize something shocking—America didn’t really have a homegrown giant monster. Sure, we had the aforementioned Kong and a few deep-cut B-movie creatures, but nothing that really stood on its own in the modern era. Abrams thought, “What if we made a monster that was uniquely ours? A terrifying, unpredictable, city-flattening behemoth for the YouTube generation.

Thus, the idea for Cloverfield was born. But rather than making a traditional monster flick where scientists explain everything while the military shoots big guns at the creature (which, let’s be honest, never actually works), Abrams wanted to tell the story from the perspective of normal people who have no clue what’s going on. The key to making this idea work? Found footage.

The early 2000s saw a resurgence of the found-footage genre, thanks to The Blair Witch Project scaring people into the woods and Paranormal Activity making us afraid of our own furniture. Abrams, alongside director Matt Reeves and screenwriter Drew Goddard, realized that found footage could make a monster movie feel terrifyingly real. If a massive creature attacked New York City, we wouldn’t get perfectly framed IMAX shots—we’d get shaky, frantic footage from some poor guy named Hud trying to film while running for his life.

This approach gave Cloverfield its edge. Unlike other monster movies, where we usually get scientists delivering exposition about the creature’s origins, this film drops us into the chaos without any real answers. There’s no moment where someone in a lab coat says, “Ah yes, it’s a mutated deep-sea creature caused by government experiments gone wrong.” Nope, we get nothing. And that’s the beauty of it.

Now, let’s get to the real question. What the hell does “Cloverfield” mean? Is it the monster’s name? A secret government project? The nickname for that park where you had a bad first date?

The truth is sadly far less dramatic. Cloverfield was simply the codename for the film during production. Abrams borrowed it from Cloverfield Boulevard, a street near his Bad Robot offices in Santa Monica, California. The title stuck, partly because it sounded mysterious, but also because no one could think of anything better. Let’s be honest, Big Scary Monster Destroys NYC doesn’t have the same ring to it.

Shooting Cloverfield was just as chaotic as it looked. The cast—mostly unknowns at the time—were given limited script details to maintain realism. T.J. Miller, who played Hud, was responsible for most of the film’s camerawork, meaning he was both a lead actor and an unintentional cinematographer.

The Statue of Liberty’s head? Inspired by Escape from New York but intentionally made larger because Abrams thought the original size “didn’t look cool enough.” The monster? Designed to look like a newborn creature, confused and scared, rather than an all-powerful destroyer. The parasites that dropped off it? Pure nightmare fuel designed to keep things interesting when the big guy wasn’t around.

One of the craziest tidbits? The entire Brooklyn Bridge collapse sequence was shot in an abandoned airplane hangar in Downey, California, with green screens and practical effects blending seamlessly into the final film. Movie magic, folks.

Part of what made Cloverfield such an event was its genius marketing campaign, which operated on the principle of say nothing, show less, and make people lose their minds trying to figure it out. The first teaser trailer dropped in 2007 before Transformers, featuring found footage of a going-away party interrupted by an explosion, the decapitation of the Statue of Liberty, and terrified people running through the streets. Imagine sitting in a theater, excited to watch giant robots punch each other, when suddenly, a trailer begins. There’s a party, some friends having fun, and then—BOOM!—a loud explosion, panic in the streets, a headless Statue of Liberty rolling like an oversized bowling ball. No title. No explanation. Just a date: 01-18-08.

The internet exploded. People combed through every frame of the trailer looking for clues. Speculation ran wild. Was it a new Godzilla movie? A secret Lost spin-off? The long-awaited Voltron reboot? No one knew, and that mystery made Cloverfield one of the most anticipated films of the year.

The viral marketing campaign fueled the fire. Websites like Tagruato and Slusho! (fake brands tied to the movie’s lore) popped up, hinting at deep-sea drilling and mysterious experiments gone wrong. Fans obsessed over every clue, only for the movie to arrive and… give them basically no answers. But somehow, that made it even better.

Beyond its brilliant marketing and mystery, Cloverfield resonated because it felt real. The found-footage format tapped into our growing obsession with recording everything. By 2008, YouTube was exploding, camera phones were everywhere, and if a giant monster actually attacked New York, you know we’d have thousands of shaky videos uploaded within minutes.

The film also captured the post-9/11 anxiety that loomed over disaster movies of the time. The imagery of crumbling skyscrapers and panicked crowds felt eerily familiar, making Cloverfield more than just a monster movie—it was an experience that reflected the fears of the modern world.

Cloverfield revisited

Released on January 18, 2008, Cloverfield obliterated expectations, earning over $172 million worldwide on a $25 million budget. It became one of the most profitable found footage films ever, proving that audiences were still willing to embrace the shaky-cam aesthetic—though some regretted it when leaving theaters feeling like they had just been inside a washing machine.

Of course, once the movie was released, fans immediately started trying to find a deeper meaning behind the name. Some theorized that it referred to a classified military operation—one of the movie’s viral marketing websites even hinted at something called “Operation Cloverfield,” a potential government cover-up of the monster attack. Others suggested that it symbolized the contrast between the idyllic name and the absolute destruction seen in the movie.

The film divided audiences. Some hailed it as a genius reinvention of the monster movie, while others complained about the erratic camerawork. Regardless, it left a mark, spawning heated discussions, fan theories, and an entire generation of filmmakers trying (and mostly failing) to replicate its success.

Unlike most found footage films, which rely on haunted houses (Paranormal Activity) or people being lost in the woods (The Blair Witch Project), Cloverfield flipped the genre on its head. This wasn’t just a couple of scared kids running from ghosts—it was a massive citywide disaster unfolding from the perspective of ordinary people. It captured the terror of being powerless in the face of destruction while also making audiences feel like they were experiencing it firsthand.

It also did something rare: It gave found footage scope. Instead of small, claustrophobic settings, we had huge city-wide devastation, collapsing skyscrapers, and military bombings, all seen from a ground-level perspective. The movie felt massive yet intimate—a difficult balance that few have replicated.

Cloverfield spawned a unique franchise. Instead of direct sequels, it led to spiritual successors: 10 Cloverfield Lane , a claustrophobic thriller that barely connects to the original, and The Cloverfield Paradox, a sci-fi mess that tries to explain everything but mostly just confused people. There’s still talk of a true Cloverfield sequel, but considering how long it’s been, we may have to wait until a real monster attack forces Abrams to make one as a documentary.

As for home media? The Blu-ray release was solid, but the 4K version is where it really shines. The improved clarity makes the chaos even more immersive, and the HDR makes those nighttime explosions pop. Just, you know, maybe don’t sit too close to the screen unless you enjoy simulated whiplash.

One of Cloverfield’s greatest strengths is its immersive, in-the-moment storytelling. The film doesn’t waste time explaining the origins of its monster or the broader global impact of the attack. Instead, it places the audience in the middle of the chaos, mimicking the way real people would experience such an event. This first-person perspective makes the film feel immediate and terrifying, forcing viewers to endure the destruction as though they are living through it themselves. By grounding the story in the personal experience of a small group of friends, Cloverfield effectively humanizes what could have been just another giant monster rampage.

As discussed earlier, its marketing campaign was another stroke of genius. Cloverfield managed to generate intense curiosity through its cryptic trailers and online tie-ins. This air of mystery sparked intense speculation and internet sleuthing, drawing audiences into its world before they even saw the film and deepened the engagement in a way that few films had attempted at the time.

Cloverfield revisited

Yet, for all of Cloverfield’s strengths, the same choices that make it unique also make it alienating to some audiences. The found-footage style, while immersive, is also exhausting. The constant shaking and erratic movement can be nauseating, and for some, it becomes a distraction rather than an enhancement. The lack of traditional cinematic framing means that key moments—monster reveals, action sequences, and emotional beats—are sometimes obscured, leading to frustration for viewers who want a clearer look at what’s happening.

Another issue is the film’s characters. While their everyman quality makes them relatable, they aren’t particularly deep or memorable. The film doesn’t spend much time developing them beyond basic archetypes: the lovesick protagonist, the best friend comic relief, the girl he loves, and so on. Because the film is so focused on its real-time survival aspect, it doesn’t allow for much in terms of character development, meaning that their deaths, while tragic, don’t always carry the emotional weight they could have. This isn’t to say the performances are bad—far from it—but the film’s pacing and structure don’t give much room for deeper engagement with the characters as individuals.

The decision not to explain the monster’s origins or its purpose adds to the terror—fear of the unknown is a powerful tool—but it also leaves many questions unanswered in a way that some find unsatisfying. Cloverfield is content with ambiguity. While this works thematically, it also means that for those hoping for answers, the film can feel frustratingly incomplete.

The ending is another point of contention. Rather than a climactic showdown or a clear resolution, the film simply ends with the implication that the protagonists did not survive. This abrupt cut-off maintains the realism—after all, if you were filming an attack and you died, there wouldn’t be a neat conclusion—but it also feels abrupt. Some viewers appreciate the bleakness and realism, while others feel like they endured the chaos only to be left without a satisfying payoff.

In the end, Cloverfield remains a standout in both the monster movie and found footage genres. It took a massive risk, marketed itself like an urban legend, and delivered a cinematic experience unlike anything before or since. Whether you loved it or left the theater clutching your stomach, one thing’s for sure: Cloverfield left a lasting impact. Now, if only we could get that proper sequel before the actual apocalypse happens.

Final thought: If the world ever does get attacked by a giant monster, please, for the love of all things holy, hand the camera to someone with a steadier grip.

Andor

The fate of Cassian Andor was sealed in 2016’s Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, but Diego Luna would get the opportunity to revisit the character two more times with the Andor spin-off prequel on Disney+. Deadline reports on Luna’s bittersweet departure from a galaxy far, far away as the actor reflected on finishing the arc after this upcoming season of Andor.

On the red carpet at the premiere of the season at Hollywood’s El Capitan Theatre, Luna says,

I said goodbye to this character when we wrapped. I had a beautiful opportunity to talk to the crew, to talk to the cast. [Creator] Tony Gilroy gave these beautiful words, we had a drink, we hugged, we cried. I’m going to miss this family.”

He continues to say that he cherishes the show and the team has “delivered and that will stay there forever, but it’s the dynamic, it’s my every day life — what I have to say goodbye to. It’s tough, I went through, really, a lovely and challenging journey with these people and it transformed me somehow.” Luna concluded, “It’s sad, it’s painful, but also I know how lucky I am that I had this opportunity. Many go through the journey of acting without living something like this, you know? I didn’t know it was going to happen to me, it’s been 10 years of my life, so I’m proud and honored to be part of this family.”

The second season of Andor takes place as the horizon of war draws near and Cassian becomes a key player in the Rebel Alliance. Everyone will be tested and, as the stakes rise, the betrayals, sacrifices and conflicting agendas will become profound. Rife with political intrigue and danger, the series is a prequel to Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, which portrayed a heroic band of rebels who steal the plans to the Empire’s weapon of mass destruction—The Death Star—setting the stage for the events of the original 1977 film. Andor sets the clock back five years from the events of Rogue One to tell the story of the film’s hero, Cassian Andor, and his transformation from disinterested, cynical nobody into a rebel hero on his way to an epic destiny.

The final season will unfold over 12 episodes broken down into four chapters of three episodes each. The first chapter of season 2 will premiere April 22, with subsequent chapters debuting each week, exclusively on Disney+.

Andor Season 2 stars Diego Luna, Stellan Skarsgård, Genevieve O’Reilly, Denise Gough, Kyle Soller, Adria Arjona, Alan Tudyk, Faye Marsay, Varada Sethu, Elizabeth Dulau, with Ben Mendelsohn and Forest Whitaker. The series was created by Tony Gilroy, who also serves as an executive producer along with Kathleen Kennedy, Sanne Wohlenberg, Diego Luna, Luke Hull and John Gilroy. Tony Gilroy wrote the first three episodes, with Beau Willimon writing episodes 4-6, Dan Gilroy penning episodes 7-9 and Tom Bissell putting pen to paper for episodes 10-12. The directors for the series are Ariel Kleiman (Eps. 1-6), Janus Metz (Eps. 7-9) and Alonso Ruizpalacios (Eps. 10-12).

We’re thirty-seven years down the line from the release of the 1988 cult classic Killer Klowns from Outer Space (watch it HERE), and even though the film’s creators have been anxious to make a follow-up for decades, we still haven’t gotten one. There’s been talk of a sequel, there’s been talk of an eight episode mini-series, but nothing has happened. But now, it looks like the Killer Klowns’ fortunes may be changing for the better. Industry scooper Jeff Sneider of The InSneider reports that Ryan Gosling has come on board to produce a Killer Klowns from Outer Space remake for Amazon MGM Studios.

The original Killer Klowns from Outer Space was directed by Stephen Chiodo from a screenplay he wrote with his brother Charles Chiodo. Stephen and Charles also produced the film with their other brother, Edward Chiodo. It has the following synopsis: When teenagers Mike and Debbie see a comet crash outside their sleepy small town, they investigate and discover a pack of murderous aliens who look very much like circus clowns. They try to warn the local authorities, but everyone assumes their story is a prank. Meanwhile, the clowns set about harvesting and eating as many people as they can. It’s not until they kidnap Debbie that Mike decides it’s up to him to stop the clowns’ bloody rampage. Grant Cramer, Suzanne Snyder, John Allen Nelson, Royal Dano, John Vernon, Michael S. Siegel, Peter Licassi, and Christopher Titus star.

Sneider notes that the Chiodo brothers are expected to be involved with the remake in some some kind of producing capacity. This project came about because the production company that Gosling runs with Jessie Henderson signed a three-year first-look deal with Amazon MGM. – and apparently Gosling is a fan of Killer Klowns from Outer Space. As of right now, there are no plans for him to take a role in the remake… but that could change as the development process goes on.

Are you a Killer Klowns from Outer Space fan? What do you think of Ryan Gosling producing a remake of the film? Share your thoughts on this one by leaving a comment below.

Eli Roth, Borderlands

Borderlands was one of the biggest box-office bombs of 2024. The adaptation of the acclaimed video game franchise grossed just $33 million in theaters and was absolutely trashed by critics. While speaking on The Town podcast, Borderlands director Eli Roth reflected on the failure of the movie, saying COVID played a big part.

None of us anticipated how complicated things were gonna be with COVID,” Roth said. “Not just in terms of what we’re shooting, but then you have to do pick-up shots or reshoots, and you have six people that are all on different sets, and every one of those sets is getting shut down because the cities have opened up, and now there’s a COVID outbreak and it was just like… we couldn’t prep in a room together, I couldn’t be with my stunt people, I couldn’t do pre-vis, everyone’s spread all over the place. You can’t prep a movie on that scale over Zoom, and I think we all thought we could pull it off, and we got our asses handed to us a bit.

The film needed reshoots, but Roth was already in the midst of Thanksgiving, so Deadpool director Tim Miller stepped in to finish the movie. “[I] was doing Thanksgiving, and it’s also the kind of thing we’re like, ‘Wow, this is the first time I’m going to see a movie sort of being like, OK, I directed this, what happens?’” he said. “That was kind of an experience like, never had that before. And I remember being… Am I at the point of my career where I’m going to sit down to watch my own movie that says I wrote and directed it, and I really genuinely don’t know what’s going to happen?

Lionsgate CEO Jon Feltheimer previously said, “On Borderlands, nearly everything that could go wrong did go wrong. It sat on the shelf for too long during the pandemic, and reshoots and rising interest rates took it outside the safety zone of our usual strict financial models.

Based on the video game franchise of the same name, Borderlands stars Cate Blanchett as Lillith, an infamous outlaw who returns to the place where she grew up and forms an alliance with a team of misfits to find the missing daughter of the most powerful man in the universe. The ensemble cast also includes Kevin Hart as Roland, Ariana Greenblatt as Tiny Tina, Florian Munteanu as Krieg, Jamie Lee Curtis as Dr. Patricia Tannis, and Jack Black as the voice of Claptrap.

Our own Chris Bumbray called the film a “disaster” that desperately wants to be the next Guardians of the Galaxy but lacks the charm or vision to do so. Bumbray added that it was “one of the worst big-budget movies I’ve seen in a while” and will likely be forgotten entirely in just a few weeks. Yikes. You can check out the rest of his review right here.
