Producer Craig Perry is quick to throw one movie under the bus.

Final Destination: Bloodlines has earned the best reviews in the franchise’s history—along with a record-breaking box office debut. Despite this recent high point, the series has seen its share of ups and downs over the past three decades. When it comes to picking the worst installment, producer Craig Perry doesn’t hesitate to call out The Final Destination.

In an excerpt from Screaming and Conjuring: The Resurrection and Unstoppable Rise of the Modern Horror Movie by Clark Collis (via Entertainment Weekly), Perry revealed that he originally believed The Final Destination would mark the end of the series. Ironically, it became the highest-grossing installment at the time—a title Bloodlines is poised to surpass—and ultimately paved the way for yet another sequel.

I figured that we’re done,” Perry said. “Then, lo and behold, opening weekend, we’re like, ‘Uh, okay, here we go.’ I don’t think the fourth one is good at all, actually it sucks. But it was successful enough to give us a chance to redeem ourselves with 5.

Most will agree with Perry; The Final Destination was a muddled mess of 3D kills and unmemorable characters, but we can be thankful that it didn’t kill the franchise.

The newest chapter in New Line Cinema’s bloody successful franchise takes audiences back to the very beginning of Death’s twisted sense of justice,” reads the official synopsis for Final Destination Bloodlines. “Plagued by a violent recurring nightmare, college student Stefanie heads home to track down the one person who might be able to break the cycle and save her family from the grisly demise that inevitably awaits them all.” The film stars Kaitlyn Santa Juana, Teo Briones, Richard Harmon, Owen Patrick Joyner, Anna Lore, Brec Bassinger, and the late Tony Todd.

Our own Tyler Nichols enjoyed Bloodlines, although he admits he wasn’t completely blown away. “One of the fun aspects of the series is the tension, and trying to add an equation to figuring out death’s plan just makes it all a tad lame,” Nichols wrote. “Not to mention constantly referring to death as a he, like he’s a physical person. Thankfully, this boasts some absolutely incredible kills, with some of them being the best of the franchise. Yes, I know, a bold claim. But I stand by it.” You can check out the rest of his review right here.

It: Welcome to Derry – the teaser trailer drops tomorrow! https://www.joblo.com/it-welcome-to-derry-past/ https://www.joblo.com/it-welcome-to-derry-past/#respond Mon, 19 May 2025 20:55:30 +0000 https://www.joblo.com/?p=818910 The first trailer for IT: Welcome to Derry is set to drop tomorrow, but HBO Max just released a tease with a familiar cackle at the end.

The post It: Welcome to Derry – the teaser trailer drops tomorrow! appeared first on JoBlo.

]]>
The upcoming TV series It: Welcome to Derry, which will serve as a prequel to Warner Bros’ two-part adaptation of the classic Stephen King novel It (pick up a copy HERE), was originally meant to be for the Max streaming service, but we recently learned that it will be airing on HBO as well. The show went into production in Port Hope, Ontario at the end of last year, and is now aiming for a premiere before the end of 2025. And now, we’ve learned that the teaser trailer is set to drop on May 20th! Here’s a tease to whet your appetite:

We’re still waiting to hear exactly when the nine episode first season is going to start airing – but while we wait, executive producer Andy Muschietti, who direct the two It feature films, has revealed that each season of the show will go further into the past.

Brad Caleb Kane (Tokyo Vice) and Jason Fuchs (Wonder Woman), who was a co-producer on It: Chapter Two, are the showrunners on It: Welcome to Derry (and Kane recently signed on to be showrunner on the Friday the 13th series Crystal Lake as well.) The show is being executive produced by Andy Muschietti and Barbara Muschietti, the sibling director/producer duo that was behind the two It movies, through their production company Double Dream. Kane and Fuchs are also executive producing, as are Shelley Meals, Roy Lee, and Dan Lin. The series is produced by HBO Max and Warner Bros. Television.

Fuchs wrote the script for the first episode, working from a story he crafted with the Muschiettis. Andy Muschietti has directed four episodes of the nine-episode series.

Stephen King had this to say about the series: “I’m excited that the story of Derry, Maine’s most haunted city, is continuing, and I’m glad Andy Muschietti is going to be overseeing the frightening festivities, along with a brain trust including his talented sister, Barbara. Red balloons all around!“ The Muschiettis added, “As teenagers, we took turns reading chapters of Stephen King’s It until the thick paperback fell to pieces. It is an epic story that contains multitudes, far beyond what we could explore in our It movies. We can’t wait to share the depths of Steve’s novel, in all its heart, humor, humanity, and horror.

The cast of Welcome to Derry includes Taylour Paige (Zola), Jovan Adepo (Watchmen), Chris Chalk (Perry Mason), James Remar (Dexter), Madeleine Stowe (Revenge), Stephen Rider (Daredevil), Alixandra Fuchs (Hatfields & McCoys), Kimberly Guerrero (The English), Dorian Grey (Star Trek: Discovery), Thomas Mitchell (Gangland Undercover), BJ Harrison (Family Law), Peter Outerbridge (Saw VI), Shane Marriott (Law & Order Toronto: Criminal Intent), Chad Rook (Billy the Kid), Joshua Odjick (Little Bird), Rudy Mancuso (Música), and Morningstar Angeline (Westworld). We don’t know anything about the characters they’ll be playing, either. In fact, the only character we know anything about is Pennywise.

Muschietti told Radio TU (with thanks to our friends at Bloody Disgusting for the transcription), that the plan is for It: Welcome to Derry to run for three seasons. “It’s a story that’s based on the interludes of the book. The interludes are basically chapters that reflect Mike Hanlon’s research. They’re fragments of his research. For 27 years, it’s the guy trying to figure out what it is, what did it, who did it, who saw it, and all that stuff. So they talk about catastrophic events from the past, like the fire in the Black Spot, the massacre of the Bradley Gang, a gang of bank robbers in the ’30s, and the explosion of the Kitchener Ironworks. Every time [Pennywise] comes out of hibernation, there is a catastrophic event that happens at the beginning of that cycle. We are basing the three seasons of this series on each of these catastrophic events. There’s a reason why the story is told backwards. So the first season is 1962, the second season is 1935, and the third season is 1908.” He added that Warner Bros. is happy with the first season and wants to start production on season 2 as soon as possible.

Are you looking forward to It: Welcome to Derry? Do you want to see this three season journey into the past play out? Let us know by leaving a comment below.

Thanksgiving star Nell Verlaque is excited to get back to the dinner table for another serving. Eli Roth’s schedule has been filling up considerably lately (possibly to wash his mouth out after Borderlands). Next up for Roth is the slasher film The Ice Cream Man. Additionally, his Knock Knock will be getting a German remake and, as part of a deal with Construction Films, he’ll also be directing Final Cut, a giallo-style feature that will star German actress Veronica Ferres, who founded the studio. A sequel to his Grindhouse-trailer-turned-feature was in the cards, but it will be starting much sooner than you think.

Variety reports that Nell Verlaque revealed that filming on Thanksgiving 2 is attempting to commence this year. Verlaque told the publication that she’s read parts of the screenplay and shared that her and Roth bounced ideas off each other. She explained, “I would like to get covered in blood. I told him I really wanted to be tortured. Like fully pained [and] tortured. I think it’s more fun as an actor. The crazier, the better for me.” Verlaque also revealed that the “goal” for them was to shoot “Thanksgiving 2” sometime this year.

Another project in development for Roth is a potential Hostel TV series, which is rumored to star Paul Giamatti. But in the meantime, The Ice Cream Man will be his current focus as it films this summer. In a recent press release, Roth described the slasher movie in the following way: “I’ve had this idea for a long, long time, and studios were too afraid of my early drafts. Now’s the time to push the envelope farther than I ever have with what I think will be my most terrifying and insane film to date… Films like Ice Cream Man are what we created The Horror Section for, to make unrated, boundary-pushing theatrical events the horror fans can all scream about for years. I’m very lucky to have such fantastic partners like MCT and, of course, all the investors in The Horror Section.”

Christopher Woodrow and Raj Singh of Media Capital Technologies, which is financing the project, also stated, “Working with Eli is always a privilege, and this film feels fresh and exciting as it’s his first original project in the independent market in nearly a decade. We believe Ice Cream Man will mark the start of the next great horror franchise with massive commercial potential.“

Dafne Keen is following up her appearance in Deadpool & Wolverine with a couple new horror thrillers. She will be appearing in the directorial debut of Jay Hernandez, in which he also wrote with Jason Bourque and Nancy Isaak, for Night Comes. Night Comes is being brought to audiences by Impossible Dream Entertainment and Big Picture Cinema Group. Keen is also set to appear in the film, Whistle, which comes from the director of The Nun — Corin Hardy. Shudder and Independent Film Company have recently announced that they have acquired the film for distrubution.

Whistle is written by Owen Egerton. The is adapted from his own short story, and stars Keen (Deadpool & Wolverine), Sophie Nélisse (Yellowjackets), Sky Yang (Rebel Moon), Percy Hynes White (My Old Ass) and Nick Frost (How to Train Your Dragon). The official plot description reads, “In WHISTLE, a misfit group of unwitting high school students stumble upon a cursed object, an ancient Aztec Death Whistle. They discover that blowing the whistle and the terrifying sound it emits will summon their future deaths to hunt them down. As the body count rises, the friends investigate the origins of the deadly artifact in a desperate effort to stop the horrifying chain of events that they have set in motion.” Producers on the film include David Gross and Jesse Shapira for No Trace Camping, and Macdara Kelleher for Wild Atlantic Pictures.

Hardy said in a statement, WHISTLE is made with the same heart-on-sleeve, disenfranchised-teen-spirit found in my favorite genre movies that I grew up watching. I was drawn to the mysterious mythology surrounding the ‘Death Whistle’ and how it presented me with the opportunity to create a variety of cinematic, imaginative and terrifying deaths. This film is built for the big screen experience, so I can’t wait for audiences to blow the WHISTLE with Independent Film Company and Shudder in cinemas!”

Adam Koehler, the Director of Acquisitions and Productions who secured the deal with IFC and Shudder on behalf of the filmmakers, stated, “Corin Hardy is a master of his craft and we’re overjoyed to be bringing this horrifying vision to audiences across the country. With WHISTLE, he’s created a vicious and bloody treat that will stand tall among the best and scariest horror films in recent box office history.” A first look at the film has also been released and can be seen below.

Long before they shared the screen in Ballerina, Keanu Reeves and Ana de Armas shared the screen in Eli Roth’s Knock Knock. With the director now going the independent route with a new shingle, The Horror Company, Roth is looking to continue his return to hardcore horror via a new production deal set with German company Construction Film, which was founded by German actress Veronica Ferres (The Bricklayer, the upcoming Red Sonja reboot).

According to Variety, part of the package includes a German-language remake of Knock Knock, which he will produce (but not direct). Next up for Roth is the slasher film The Ice Cream Man, but as part of the deal with Construction Film, he’ll also be directing Final Cut, a giallo-style feature in which Ferres will also appear. Roth has long been a superfan of the genre, with him recently appearing on Quentin Tarantino and Roger Avary’s The Video Archives Podcast for a lively discussion of one of the genre’s undisputed classics, Dressed to Kill

Roth has a lot in the works, including a sequel to his horror hit Thanksgiving, The Ice Cream Man (which he describes as his “most terrifying and insane” film yet), and a potential Hostel TV series, which is rumoured to star Paul Giamatti.

In a recent press release, Roth described The Ice Cream Man in the following way:

“I’ve had this idea for a long, long time, and studios were too afraid of my early drafts. Now’s the time to push the envelope farther than I ever have with what I think will be my most terrifying and insane film to date… Films like Ice Cream Man are what we created The Horror Section for, to make unrated, boundary-pushing theatrical events the horror fans can all scream about for years. Alpha: The moody teaser trailer from Titane’s Julia Ducournau is released https://www.joblo.com/alpha-teaser-trailer/ https://www.joblo.com/alpha-teaser-trailer/#respond Mon, 19 May 2025 13:45:34 +0000 https://www.joblo.com/?p=841536 The director of Titane returns with her new film that has a basic plot description, but teases a more sinister story with the trailer.

Body horror fans, get ready for a new trip into shock cinema. Julia Ducournau, who directed the visceral horror films Raw and Titane, saddles up to release her third film, AlphaTitane was a milestone for the filmmaker as she became the second woman director to win the Palme d’Or at Cannes. FilmNation and Charades presented Alpha to potential buyers at the Cannes market, and it was reported that the indie studio, Neon, would come out with the distribution rights to the film. Now, Neon has released a brand new foreboding teaser trailer for the film. You can view it above.

Alpha stars Tahar Rahim, Golshifteh Farahani, Mélissa Boros, Emma Mackey, Finnegan Oldfield and Louai El Amrousy. The plot description reads, “Alpha. A troubled 13-year-old lives with her single mom. Their world collapses the day she returns from school with a tattoo on her arm.” Sounds like a basic plot for a family drama, but Ducournau is known for taking some wildly crazy turns with her films and the teaser, of course, implies that a lot more is going on.

Jean des Forêts and Amelie Jacquis of Petit Film are on board as producers of Alpha. Joining them will be Eric & Nicolas Altmayer of Mandarin & Compagnie and Frakas Productions will be co-producing. Charades and FilmNation Entertainment have also handled sales in the rest of the world during the Cannes Film Festival. Last year, FilmNation Entertainment and Charades provided the following statement: Alpha is Julia’s most personal, profound work yet, and we are looking forward to a global audience discovering the story with as much excitement as we did. We can’t wait to bring the film to market in Cannes and to launch sales together for the first time and collaborate in this way.“

So, for an idea of what kind of film this might turn out to be, we can only look back at the films Ducournau made previously. Her first movie, Raw, had the following synopsis: Stringent vegetarian Justine encounters a decadent, merciless and dangerously seductive world during her first week at veterinary school. Desperate to fit in, she strays from her principles and eats raw meat for the first time. The young woman soon experiences terrible and unexpected consequences as her true self begins to emerge.

Then Titane told this story: Alexia is a dancer who, after being injured in a car accident as a child, has a titanium plate fitted into her head. Amidst a series of brutal and unexplained murders, her path crosses with Vincent, a firefighter desperately searching for his long-missing son, changing their lives forever.

Fresh off stealing scenes following his debauched turn in HBO’s The White Lotus, Sam Rockwell is off to New York City to fight zombies in director Zach Golden’s Hellhound. Rockwell will be joined by the great Marisa Tomei and Chris Messina in what’s being called a zombie comedy. Here’s the official synopsis via the press release:

When a zombie outbreak hits small-town New York, a washed-up veterinarian must team up with his ex-wife and her new cop boyfriend to stop President William White and his right-hand man General Graves from destroying NYC. It’s a battle of zombies, power, and unresolved feelings—and the fate of millions rests in the hands of a guy who’s already given up.

This marks the continuation of an interesting detour into genre for Rockwell, who also recently wrapped director Gore Verbinski’s Good Luck, Have Fun, Don’t Die, in which he stars as a man from the future who travels back in time to save the world from AI. He’ll also be re-teaming with his Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri director Martin McDonagh for Wild Horse Nine. It is currently filming and sounds like it could be a potential Oscar contender either this year or next, depending on when it wraps.

Hellhound director Zach Golden previously helmed the Don Johnson and Olga Kurylenko-led action flick, High Heat. Hungry Bull Productions will produce the film. Here’s what their president, Joseph Restaino, had to say about the movie:

We are thrilled to bring Zach Golden’s and Ivan’s Martin’s fun, exciting, action packed script to life. With Zach in the director seat, we have a trusted and proven storyteller leading an all-star cast led by Marisa Tomei, Sam Rockwell, Chris Messina and Martin to bring Hellhound to audiences around the world. This talented team is a dream come true.”

Brie Larson’s run at the MCU may not have set the comic book movie universe on fire, but coming from smaller movies, then going to multi-million blockbusters, many newcomers would ask her for advice. Larson understands the monumental task that new heroes would be undertaking. She stated, “It’s a whole thing, and it’s a lot of pressure. And I think it’s a strange thing, especially when you’re a newcomer and you’re tasked with being the most powerful blah, blah, blah of blah, blah, blah, and you feel scared. It’s so hard to be the cool, confident one when you’re like, ‘Do I know what I’m supposed to be doing?'”

While it remains to be seen if Captain Marvel will return in either of the next Avengers movies, Larson will be starring in a new creature-themed horror film from producer J.J. Abrams. According to Deadline, Larson will lead in Fail-Safe, which is one of the boiling hot films being shopped around at the Cannes market. Fail-Safe will be directed by Strange Darling‘s JT Mollner. The movie is being described as “a modern take on the creature horror film told from the perspective of a young boy who slowly begins to discover that his beloved parents are hiding a disturbing secret about his mother’s true nature.” No One Will Save You‘s Brian Duffield wrote the screenplay for Fail-Safe.

Abrams, who helmed both giant sci-fi franchises, Star Trek and Star Wars, stated, “With Fail-Safe, Brian Duffield has written an absolute powerhouse of a script. It’s a horror film that is as sweet and moving as it is terrifying. To have JT Mollner in the director’s chair — his Strange Darling blew me away — is a dream come true. Finally, having the limitlessly talented Brie Larson as our star sets up Fail-Safe to be that rare horror film that makes you laugh, feel, and care, before taking you on an absolutely wild ride.”

The paranoia horror film will come from FilmNation Entertainment’s production label Infrared, as well as J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot Productions, and Assemble Media. Drew Simon, J.J. Abrams and Jon Cohen, and Jack Heller are on board as producers. Assemble’s Caitlin de Lisser-Ellen and Brian Duffield are executive-producing, along with star, Brie Larson. Simon exclaimed, “I’m beyond excited to see Brie take on this role – it’s frightening, emotionally charged, and so different from anything she’s done before!”

Savage will direct from a script adapted from the novel by Bird Box author Josh Malerman. According to Deadline, Chastain’s co-star in the film will be filmmaker Jay Duplass, who can currently be seen in the series Dying for Sex. Jay Duplass and his brother, Mark Duplass, are prolific indie filmmakers. Jay recently directed The Baltimorons, which is his first writer/director project in 14 years. The Baltimorons recently premiered at this year’s SXSW festival.

After the project announcement, it was noted that “While details behind the film are unknown, in the Malerman novel, the story revolves around a haunting told from the perspective of a young girl whose troubled family is targeted by an entity she calls ‘Other Mommy.’” That brief description somewhat brings to mind another Jessica Chastain horror movie, Mama, which features a supernatural entity referred to by children in Chastain’s care as “Mama.”

Here’s the full description of Malerman’s novel: To eight-year-old Bela, her family is her world. There’s Mommy, Daddo, and Grandma Ruth. But there is also Other Mommy, a malevolent entity who asks her every day: “Can I go inside your heart?” When horrifying incidents around the house signal that Other Mommy is growing tired of asking Bela the question over and over, Bela understands that unless she says yes, her family will soon pay. Other Mommy is getting restless, stronger, bolder. Only the bonds of family can keep Bela safe, but other incidents show cracks in her parents’ marriage. The safety Bela relies on is about to unravel. But Other Mommy needs an answer. You can pick up a copy of the novel at THIS LINK.

Sinners, Ryan Coogler’s remarkable horror film, has been given an official 4K Blu-ray street date, with the film set to hit shelves on July 22nd. As a nice bonus, it will be featured in a sharp steelbook packaging.

Considering Sinners is one of the best-reviewed films of 2025 so far (we gave it a 9/10 and even Tom Cruise loved it!), this is going to be an immediate pre-order for a lot of us, myself included. As for technical specs, you can expect a stellar presentation that offers native 4K 2160p resolution and Dolby Vision, HDR10 on the visual front, and Dolby Atmos and Dolby TrueHD 7.1 on the audio side.

One additional compelling element to this 4K Blu-ray release of Sinners is that it will have the shifting aspect ratio – which went from 2.76:1 to 1.43:1 in some scenes during the IMAX release – something cinematographer Autumn Durald Arkapaw teased on social media a few weeks ago, thus presenting the film in a way that will duplicate the theatrical experience as best as possible for your home.

Sinners cleaned up at the box office upon release, landing at #1 on Easter weekend with $55.8 million. In its second week, it barely fell, holding the #1 spot and taking in another $45.7 million. It has also yet to fall past the second spot and has now earned just under $300 million at the worldwide box office, which, just as a reminder, is astounding for a movie not based on an IP. That will easily put it in the top 10 for the year; as of now, it trails only A Minecraft Movie, although that movie had people screaming at the screen for very different reasons.

Here is the plot of Sinners if you’ve yet to see it: “Here is the plot for Sinners: “Trying to leave their troubled lives behind, twin brothers (Michael B. Jordan) return to their hometown to start again, only to discover that an even greater evil is waiting to welcome them back.”

Will you be pre-ordering the 4K Blu-ray of Sinners?

She knows what you did last summer…and that other summer…and that other time, too. Jennifer Love Hewitt is going all in on the I Know What You Did Last Summer universe, as she will be narrating a true crime docuseries titled They Know What They Did, which will air on HBO Max this year.

As per Bloody Disgusting, They Know What They Did has the following synopsis: “Blending a kaleidoscope of perspectives, each episode charts the journey to confront what really happened, revealing secrets and uncovering the truth. The stories unfold through first-person accounts of friends, family, locals, journalists and law enforcement.”

While no official release date has been set for They Know What They Did, it’s assumed that the series will arrive sometime around the release of I Know What You Did Last Summer, which comes out on July 18th.

While They Know What They Did sounds like a fitting companion of sorts for the upcoming I Know What You Did Last Summer franchise revival, most eyes will be on the feature itself, especially since Hewitt is reprising Julie James from the first two movies. Joining her in the legacy department will be Freddie Prinze Jr., who played boyfriend Ray Bronson.

In the new I Know What You Did Last Summer, a group of teens accidentally kill someone in a car accident, only to start getting picked off one by one the following year. OK, so that’s the exact same plot as the 1997 original but in this case, the teens seek out the help of both Julie and Ray. On bringing back those characters, director Jennifer Kayton Robinson said, “So the way that I’ve approached the franchise is that I feel like those final scenes in the first two movies live outside the canon, because in the first movie she gets attacked through the shower, through the glass door, and in the second movie, she gets pulled under the bed. So they’re both alive and well, and what I will say is that we have continued the tradition in our film.” Fair enough – at least they didn’t force a lousy excuse to bring back Helen Shivers

Will you be checking out the new I Know What You Did Last Summer in theaters? What about They Know What They Did on HBO Max? Let us know below!

Maika Monroe will replace Margaret Qualley in Victorian Psycho https://www.joblo.com/maika-monroe-victorian-psycho/ https://www.joblo.com/maika-monroe-victorian-psycho/#respond Thu, 15 May 2025 21:25:45 +0000 https://www.joblo.com/?p=841225 Margaret Qualley left Victorian Psycho earlier this year, but it has been announced that Maika Monroe will replace her.

Margaret Qualley was originally set to star in the psychological horror-thriller Victorian Psycho, but she dropped out of the project earlier this year, just before production was slated to begin. Deadline reports that a replacement has now been found. Maika Monroe (Longlegs) has stepped up to star in Victorian Psycho.

Victorian Psycho takes place in 1858, with Monroe playing Winifred Notty, a young, eccentric governess who “arrives at the remote gothic manor known as Ensor House. Her responsibilities include teaching the children table manners and educating them about their family’s history, all whilst hiding her psychopathic tendencies. As Winifred assimilates into life at Ensor House, staff members begin to inexplicably disappear, and the owners of the estate begin to wonder if there is something amiss about their new governess.” Zachary Wigon (Sanctuary) will direct from a script by Virginia Feito, which is based on her novel of the same name. Production is expected to kick off this August.

Maika’s intense screen presence has resonated with me over and over again throughout her history of complex performances,” said Wigon in a statement. “I’m absolutely thrilled for her to bring her unique style of psychological portraiture to the fascinatingly bizarre Winifred Notty.

Qualley isn’t the only departure the production has faced. A24 was originally onboard to handle domestic, but the company dropped out soon after Qualley. The production is currently speaking with other domestic buyers. The film has already been pre-sold to multiple international markets, so finding a new partner shouldn’t take long.

Monroe was last seen starring alongside Nicolas Cage in Longlegs. She has several high-profile projects on her slate, including starring in a remake of The Hand That Rocks the Cradle alongside Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Raúl Castillo. She’s also preparing to return for They Follow, a sequel to It Follows, the horror flick that helped put Monroe on the map over ten years ago. She has teased that the sequel will be “bigger, darker, and more f*cked up” than its predecessor. Not much is known about the new film, only that it will take place ten years after the events of the original.

While one of the sequels sports the subtitle, "A New Beginning," another new beginning has started for the franchise.

The Friday the 13th franchise rights holders at Horror Inc. announced that they were launching the Jason Universe, which would encompass “new Friday the 13th activations that will span a wide range of platforms from entertainment, games, immersive experiences, merchandise and more to be announced @JasonUniverse13 on social media or by visiting the official Jason Universe website.” In celebration of the 45th anniversary of the original film, Jason Universe unveiled a new logo last week.

You may have noticed that the logo features the iconic hockey mask, but with very subtle changes to give it a fresher look. Now, AdWeek has the exclusive first look of the new full design of the man himself, which sports the new mask. The president of Horror Inc., Rob Barsamian, made a statement about their new design, “We strive to maintain Jason’s original essence, while continuing to move toward the future with a defined look and feel that takes Jason into his next chapter. We’re also working with both familiar and fresh franchise voices to strike that balance.” After variations that include a burlap sack, working overalls and a futuristic space suit, it looks as if a “back-to-basics” approach was the name of the game here. Check it out below.

Special effects guru Greg Nicotero was said to have been consulted on this redesign. Barsamian explained, “We gave Greg our new 13-hole mask and worked together on this full body look that embodies classic Jason. He’s a strong, towering and terrifying slasher with a machete, his weapon of choice.” With a planned A24 and Peacock Crystal Lake series being developed, Horror, Inc.’s chief marketing officer Sheri Conn, assures fans that Voorhees will be slashing teenagers on the big screen again as well. Conn stated, “We’re listening to fans and actively developing a slate under the Jason Universe banner that spans new movies, gaming, immersive experiences, collectibles and more. Our film franchise is one of the most enduring horror properties in cinematic history, and we’re actively reimagining what the next chapter—and the slasher genre overall—can become.”

Marc Toberoff, Victor Miller, Robert M. Barsamian, and Robert P. Barsamian are currently working with Stuart Manashil, A24, and showrunner Brad Caleb Kane to executive produce the Friday the 13th series Crystal Lake for the Peacock streaming service. That show, which recently signed Linda Cardellini to play Jason’s vengeful mother Pamela Voorhees, is gearing up to go into production.

Over Your Dead Body, was was previously titled The Trip, has just been acquired by IFC for a theatrical release. The 87North/XYZ-produced film comes from director Jorma Taccone (MacGruber and Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping) – and sports an amazing ensemble cast, including Jason Segel (How I Met Your Mother), Samara Weaving (Ready or Not), Timothy Olyphant (Justified), Juliette Lewis (From Dusk Till Dawn), Paul Guilfoyle (CSI: Crime Scene Investigation), and retired mixed martial artist Keith Jardine (Godless).

Over Your Dead Body is based on director Tommy Wirkola’s 2021 Norwegian thriller, I Onde Dager, which starred Noomi Rapace and Aksel Hennie. The screenplay by Wirkola, John Niven, and Nick Ball has been reworked by Nick Kocher and Brian McElhaney. The original film had the following synopsis: Eager to end their marriage by murdering each other, a husband and wife head to a remote cabin — but soon find themselves facing an even bigger threat. Deadline said the remake will follow a dysfunctional couple (Segel and Weaving) who head to a remote cabin to “reconnect”, but each has secret intentions to kill the other.

XYZ is financing and producing the new film with 87North’s Kelly McCormick, Lee Kim, and Guy Danella. Taccone and Wirkola serve as executive producers alongside Jørgen Storm Rosenberg and Kjetil Omberg, who produced the original film for 74 Entertainment. Actress Karen Gillan, who happens to be married to writer Nick Kocher, is co-producing.

Here’s part of the press release:

“Jorma Taccone stands as one of the most creative and reliably brilliant voices in comedy and we are delighted to collaborate with him and our friends at 87North, XYZ, and Resolute Films on OVER YOUR DEAD BODY,” said Head of IFC Entertainment Group Scott Shooman. “The film is a dark, twisted, and riotous action comedy, with a killer cast – a perfect recipe to delight audiences on the big screen.”

Said director Jorma Taccone, “I am THRILLED to have Independent Film Company as a partner on releasing OVER YOUR DEAD BODY. I am equally pumped to have audiences watch this movie in real live theaters and love that IFC understands how important it is for a movie this kick ass and full of twists to have a real theatrical release. If I have a third child, I’m probably going to name it IFC!”

Wirkola, who previously worked with 87North when he directed the Santa Claus action movie Violent Night, provided the following statement: “I can’t wait to see Jorma bring his totally singular sensibility to the material. That, combined with this killer cast, makes me beyond excited that this film will truly stand out in the cinematic landscape.

Taccone added, “I’m a huge fan of Tommy’s work and I love the original film. I have a totally singular sensibility, and I can’t wait to see what I bring to the material.

What do you think of Jorma Taccone, Jason Segel, Samara Weaving, Timothy Olyphant, Juliette Lewis, Paul Guilfoyle, and Keith Jardine teaming up to bring us a remake of Tommy Wirkola’s I Onde Dager, a.k.a. The Trip? Share your thoughts on this one by leaving a comment below.

Renny Harlin amped up the shark attack genre with the medically altered Great Whites in Deep Blue Sea. Now, the veteran action director behind such films as Die Hard 2, Cliffhanger and the immensely underrated The Long Kiss Goodnight, will be returning to killer oceanic creatures with killer whales in the survival thriller Black Tides. Deadline reports on the project that is now set to star John Travolta. The creature feature is written by Chris Sparling (Buried) and Ángel Agudo (Prime Video’s Apocalypse Z) and will be produced by Adrián Guerra and Nuria Valls’s Nostromo Pictures (Buried).

The film will tell the story of Rebecca, who reunites with her estranged father, Bill, in sunny Málaga expecting a healing family trip with her young son, Sebastian. Instead, their voyage across the Strait of Gibraltar becomes a nightmare as they’re relentlessly attacked by rogue orcas. Rebecca, confronting deep emotional wounds, must rise as an unlikely hero in a battle for survival. As the Cannes market will commence this year, Black Tides will be one of the titles shopped around as The Solution Entertainment Group is handling global sales, but will exclude Spain. Production on the film is scheduled to start at the end of the summer. It is also being touted as a movie that will be “shot old-school, with in-camera effects and real water work.”

Harlin stated, “John Travolta brings the perfect combination of grit, depth, vulnerability and charisma to the character of Bill Pierce, the estranged father, that achingly captures the tragedies of family dynamics. I can’t wait to show fans of big screen cinema how his movie star presence and physicality will add gravity to the epic action sequences and deeply emotional personal drama. As a director, I consider myself fortunate to join a list of acclaimed filmmakers who’ve had the privilege of getting to know John as an artist and a person.”

Producer Adrián Guerra added, “You build a film like this around very few people. John’s one of them. He brings the history, the craft, and the instinct that lets a character land in a way that lasts.”

Harlin provided the following statement: “This film grabs you by the throat and the heart. I’m going back to the kind of filmmaking I love—intense, physical, and immersive. This one is built for the big screen.” Guerra added, “We’re going back to what makes thrillers unforgettable—precision filmmaking, real tension, and emotional weight. Every shot is designed to build pressure, every choice anchored in character. Shot in real conditions, this is a physical, immersive experience made for the cinema. It doesn’t just entertain—it holds you in its grip.“

Kick-Ass 2 and Imaginary director Jeff Wadlow has lined up his next project, Devil’s Mouth, with Kathryn Newton and Lana Condor set to star.

The screenplay for Devil’s Mouth is by Aja Gabel and MJ Wesner and was featured on the 2019 Black List, the annual collection of the best unproduced scripts in Hollywood. Back then it was titled Apex and was listed with the following plot: “When old college friends on a trip to Mexico get trapped in an underwater cave system with a bull shark, old tensions and power struggles resurface as they fight to survive.” Later revisions have been made by Wadlow, and Deadline indicates that the setting has been moved from Mexico to Thailand.

Jeff Wadlow — who earned a DGA Award nomination for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Television, Commercials and Documentary for the reboot of kid-friendly horror/supernatural series Are You Afraid of the Dark? (he helmed four episodes of the second season — has been pushing to make a name for himself within the horror genre, making the move to team up with Blumhouse on a series of movies, beginning with 2018’s Truth or Dare, which led to a horror twist on ‘70s series Fantasy Island and last year’s Imaginary, which found a stuffed bear to be a bit more evil than intended…Devil’s Mouth, however, is a co-production of Amazon MGM Studios and Lionsgate. Other directional credits include 2005’s Cry Wolf and Netflix’s The Curse of Bridge Hollow, while he served as writer on Bates Motel and The Strain. He has even reportedly been in the running to direct the DCU’s Clayface.

As far as the stars of Devil’s Mouth go, Kathryn Newton precisely had TV roles on Smallville, Halt and Catch Fire and Big Little Lies, with movie roles as Cassie Lang in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania and the lead in Zelda Williams’ Lisa Frankenstein. She also has sequel Ready or Not: Here I Come on the docket. Co-star Lana Condor — who played Jubilee in X-Men: Apocalypse and led the To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before trilogy — will notably finally see the release of Coyote vs. Acme in 2026.

Are you a fan of Jeff Wadlow? Are you looking forward to Devil’s Mouth?

NEON and Longlegs director Osgood Perkins are keeping the good times rolling after striking a deal to remain collaborative partners. The new production studio, Phobos, finds Perkins and Chris Ferguson entering a first-look deal with NEON to continue scaring the bejesus out of horror fans. According to Variety, “Perkins and Ferguson will jointly produce upcoming projects, with NEON serving as the home for films that Perkins writes and directs, as well as those he produces for other filmmakers.” Variety also notes in today’s report, “Neon will release the films theatrically in the U.S. and represent the international sales rights.” Now, a bizarre promotional video for Perkins’ latest project, Keeper, is live on NEON’s YouTube channel, and it’s f**king strange, y’all.

The video, playing on a non-stop loop on NEON’s YouTube channel, features a young, unblinking individual repeatedly drawing on a notepad, the sound of their pen against paper playing like ASMR for sickos. Fun Fact: I despise the sound of pencil/pen on paper, especially when the pen is out of ink from the start. Just thinking about it sends a shiver down my spine. Once in a while, the scene changes to footage of a screaming woman, her face covered in blood as she chokes on the oxygenated life juice. Later, another image of a cabin appears on screen, accompanied by another blood-curdling scream.

Keeper, Osgood Perkins, NEON

Osgood Perkins directs Keeper from a script by Nick Lepard (Dangerous Animals), with Tatiana Maslany (The Monkey, She-Hulk: Attorney at Law) and Rossif Sutherland (Possessor) in starring roles. “Keeper follows a couple as they escape for a romantic anniversary weekend at a secluded cabin. When Malcolm (Sutherland) suddenly returns to the city, Liz (Maslany) finds herself isolated and in the presence of an unspeakable evil that unveils the cabin’s horrifying secrets.”

Previously, a viral website for Lepard’s Dangerous Animals asked viewers to call 855-800-CHUM to book an experience with Jai Courtney’s Captain Tucker. The site includes a curious customer review section questioning the validity of the Dangerous Animals experience. Some customers give Tucker’s Experience 5 stars, while others leave 1-star reviews wanting to know why their friends have not returned from the outing. It’s very… fishy. Hey-o!

You’re welcome. I’ll be here all week.

What do you think about the strange video for Keeper playing on NEON’s YouTube channel? What do you think the person in the video is drawing? Let us know in the comments section below.

Together: Dave Franco and Alison Brie are hit with a copyright lawsuit over their new body horror film https://www.joblo.com/together-copyright-lawsuit/ https://www.joblo.com/together-copyright-lawsuit/#respond Wed, 14 May 2025 19:48:22 +0000 https://www.joblo.com/?p=840965 While Together made the festival rounds and garnered lively reactions from the audience, two Sundance attendees confirmed their suspicions.

The post Together: Dave Franco and Alison Brie are hit with a copyright lawsuit over their new body horror film appeared first on JoBlo.

JoBlo’s own Chris Bumbray had the chance to see the body horror film Together at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year and said that “horror fans are going to have a blast” with this one when it makes its way out into the world. (You can read his full 8/10 review at THIS LINK.) Now, Neon is planning to bring this good time to horror fans with a July 30 theatrical release. While Bumbray got to view it at SXSW, two producers made sure to watch it at Sundance as the concept sounded a little too familiar to their own film.

Jess Jacklin and Charles Beale were producers on the 2020 indie film, Better Half, which they feel has been ripped off in Together. Variety reports that the producers have filed a copyright infringement suit against Franco and Brie, saying that they pitched them Better Half back in 2020, but the stars and their WME agents turned it down. The suit states, “As the audience laughed and cheered, Jacklin and Beale sat in stunned silence, their worst nightmare unfolding. Scene after scene confirmed that Defendants did not simply take ‘stock ideas’ or ‘scenes a faire’ but stole virtually every unique aspect of ‘Better Half’s’ copyrightable expression.” The suit has alleged that the defendants engaged in an “intentional scheme” to copy ideas from their film and claimed Brie and Franco rejected the initial offer “because they wanted to produce the film themselves and have WME package the project with one of the agency’s own writers.”

The suit recounts that the casting director of Better Half sent Franco and Brie’s agents a script along with a synopsis in August 2020. They even included an offer for the couple to star in the film. Franco’s agent was said to have responded, “Dave is going to pass, but thank you for thinking of him.” WME responded to the suit, saying it was “frivolous and without merit.” A spokesperson stated, “The facts in this case are clear and we plan to vigorously defend ourselves.”

The suit claims, “In both ‘Better Half’ and ‘Together,’ the main characters struggle to navigate daily life as their physical attachment progresses and they start to control each other’s body parts.”

The following description from the lawsuit does contain some SPOILERY details for both films, so if you want to stay as fresh as you can, you may want to skip it.

The suit alleges, “While at first they desperately search for ways to detach their bodies — from medical intervention to chainsaws— by the end, they resign themselves to their conjoined existence.” They also point out specifics that include a “strikingly similar bathroom sequence where the protagonists become attached at the genitals and attempt to hide their intimate encounter from a minor character waiting just outside.”

A last point of note, per Variety, “In the synopsis, the Better Half was described a surreal, satirical comedy about a man and a woman who have a one-night stand, and wake up to see that they have become literally and physically attached. The email did not describe it as horror film. When it appeared at the Brooklyn Film Festival, it was billed as a romantic comedy.”

Osgood Perkins is becoming something of royalty in the horror category as the offspring of one of the most iconic names in the genre, plus carving out his own path with a directing career. Perkins is well established as a director, but his star rose further recently with the atmospheric serial killer film Longlegs and his latest dark comedy horror film The Monkey, which was based on a Stephen King story. Now, Perkins is being given the keys to the low-to-mid-budget horror kingdom as he signs a new deal with Neon and launches his own banner.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Perkins is now partnered with Neon on a first-look deal and he has launched Phobos — a new film banner that he will be running with his partner Chris Ferguson. Per THR, “Under the deal, Neon will serve as the home for Perkins’ projects, which he and Ferguson will produce. It will also allow Perkins and Ferguson to produce other filmmakers’ movies for Neon. Neon will release these projects theatrically in the United States and represent international rights.” Perkins will also continue to produce projects with Brian Kavanaugh-Jones of Range Productions.

Perkins’ credits include The Blackcoat’s Daughter (a.k.a. February), I Am the Pretty Thing That Lives in the HouseGretel & Hansel, along with the Nicolas Cage horror film Longlegs. Neon has given The Monkey a digital release a month ago. If you’re more interested in the physical media release, the film is set to reach 4K, Blu-ray, and DVD on June 24. Copies are already available for pre-order HERE.

Theo James (The White Lotus) plays the twins in later years, while Christian Convery (Sweet Tooth) plays them in their younger days. Also in the cast are Elijah Wood (The Lord of the Rings), Tatiana Maslany (SheHulkAttorney at Law), Colin O’Brien (Wonka), Rohan Campbell (Halloween Ends), and Sarah Levy (Schitt’s Creek). James Wan and Michael Clear produced The Monkey for Atomic Monster, while Jason Cloth and Dave Caplan produced for C2 Motion Picture Group. Executive producers include Brian Kavanaugh-Jones and Fred Berger of Automatik, Peter Luo and Nancy Xu of Stars Collective, John Friedberg of Black Bear, and Chris Ferguson. Atomic Monster and Stars Collective developed the project, and C2 Motion Picture Group provided the financing.

Wanna find something fun to do while on vacation? Take an adventurous swim with sharks courtesy of Tucker’s Shark Experience! An “in-world” website has been released for the tourist attraction of Jai Courtney‘s character in Dangerous Animals. While the trailer is played fairly straight, Courtney looks to be chewing more scenery than the sharks, and the website is just as tongue-in-cheek, with the review section showcasing concerned customers.

Take a gander at the fun HERE.

Sean Byrne has finally made his third feature with this film, and IFC Films is gearing up to give it a theatrical release on June 6. After the theatrical run, Dangerous Animals will be making its way over to the Shudder streaming service.

Byrne wrote both The Loved Ones and The Devil’s Candy, but for Dangerous Animals he was working from a script by Nick Lepard. Here’s the synopsis: When Zephyr, a rebellious surfer, is abducted by a shark-obsessed serial killer and held captive on his boat, she must figure out how to escape before he carries out a ritualistic feeding to the sharks below. This was Lepard’s first produced screenplay. Director Osgood Perkins is currently in post-production on another Lepard-scripted project, a horror film titled Keeper.

Dangerous Animals stars Jai Courtney (Suicide Squad), Hassie Harrison (Yellowstone), and Josh Heuston (Dune: Prophecy). The film’s IMDb page adds that Rob Carlton (Chandon Pictures), Ella Newton (Girl at the Window), James Munn (Girls’ Night Out), Michael Goldman (Monsters of Man), Jon Quested (Deep Red Water), Liam Greinke (Erotic Stories), Ryland Pearson-McManus (Buds), Teah Fraser (Young Rock), Jess Tredinnick (Audrey), and newcomer Sean Richard are in the cast as well.

Chris Ferguson, Brian Kavanaugh-Jones, Mickey Liddell, Troy Lum, Andrew Mason, and Pete Shilaimon produced, with Fred Berger, Michael Glassman, Mehrdod Heydari, Marlaina Mah, Jacob Yakob, and Joseph Yakob serving as executive producers. Giorgia Stawaruk was an associate producer and Sandy Stevens the line producer.

The post Morris, the gator from 1980’s Alligator (and Happy Gilmore) dies appeared first on JoBlo.

Morris, the famed reptile who crept through the Chicago sewers in 1980’s Alligator and took Chubbs’ hand (and fell victim to Adam Sandler) in Happy Gilmore, has passed away. While the exact age isn’t known, it’s estimated that Morris was anywhere ever seen 80 and 100.

The news of Morris the alligator’s passing was shared by Colorado Gator Farm, the group who took care of the gator following his retirement from movies. In a Facebook post, they wrote, “Colorado Gators is sad to report the passing away of our oldest alligator, Morris. Morris was known for his work in many movies and TV shows from 1975 to 2006, when he retired to live out his days at Colorado Gators. His exact age was unknown, but he was 9 feet long in 1975 and by his growth rate and tooth loss, we can estimate his age at over 80 years. While we knew this was inevitable, we are very saddened by his passing to old age. RIP Morris.” The farm also stated that they would have Morris taxidermied with the purpose of ensuring the alligator continues to scare kids for generations, adding, “It’s what he would have wanted.”

Considering alligators who live in captivity have a life span that some sources peg around 70 years, Morris no doubt lived a lengthy amount of time. That he did so following a ~50-year-career in movies is also quite impressive.

Other notable film credits for Morris include the 1991 DTV sequel to Alligator, Dr. Dolittle 2, Eraser, and Interview with the Vampire. During his run in the industry, Morris was part of Brocketts Film Fauna, which supplies animals to film and TV productions.

While he had so many credits, it will always be Alligator and Happy Gilmore that Morris will best be remembered for. A terror on the screen whether played for fears or laughs, Morris left his mark, proving to be one of the most vicious reptiles in movie history while also lending to Happy Gilmore’s most memorable scenes. His death is preceded by Carl Weathers just last year and Abraham Lincoln in 1865.

Gun Interactive released The Texas Chain Saw Massacre game in August 2023, and now, less than two years later, the company has announced that there will be no further major updates to the game.

The Texas Chain Saw Massacre will not be receiving any further future content or support,” Gun Interactive said in a community update. “This means that there will be no more DLC, balance updates, or bug fixes, after our upcoming May patch. You can still expect a few more patches in the future in order to transition towards peer-to-peer matchmaking. The Texas Chain Saw Massacre will still be playable and is NOT being delisted from store fronts. Our community team will continue to interact with our players as we continue to celebrate The Texas Chain Saw Massacre with all of you who love this game just as much as we do.

It’s good to know that the game will still be playable, but sad to see it join the ranks of Friday the 13th: The Game and Evil Dead: The Game.

Gun Interactive continued, “We feel proud of the game we’ve made and we’re happy that we’re at a point where we feel The Texas Chain Saw Massacre has reached its full potential. From the very beginning, we’ve always had a clear and concise vision for this game. We wanted to push the envelope on multiplayer asymmetrical horror, shed light on this iconic film to a newer generation, and place folks into the beautiful but macabre world of Muerto County and we feel we have achieved that.

The game included plenty of horror royalty, such as Kane Hodder, Barbara Crampton, Scout Taylor Compton, Skeet Ulrich, Bill Moseley, and Edwin Neal. It takes place several months before the events of the first movie and revolves around Ana Flores and her college friends as they go searching for her missing sister, Maria.

It doesn’t sound like Gun Interactive made this choice lightly, and they appreciate everyone who has played the game and loved it. “As a creative studio, it’s imperative to communicate that we’ve seen this vision through to the natural creative end,” Gun said. “We are a scrappy group of horror heads and artists continuously working on bringing cinematic experiences to you all. We appreciate the folks who understand the vision we are bringing to the asymmetrical multiplayer horror space because let’s face it, it may not be for everyone. But those who get it, those who have widened their gaming circles to play The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, those who have reveled in the terror, horror, and beauty of this world with their friends keep us motivated and ready to continue to do what we do best… make your favorite horror games. We wouldn’t have it any other way.

The Assessment and Marvel Cinematic Universe actor Elizabeth Olsen is sharpening her incisors for Panos Cosmatos‘s (Mandy, Beyond the Black Rainbow, Guillermo Del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities) upcoming ’80s-style vampire thriller Flesh of the Gods. She joins Kristen Stewart (American Ultra, Underwater, Twilight) and Oscar Isaac (Ex Machina, Dune, Moon Knight), who, according to Deadline, play “Raoul and Alex, a married couple in glittering ’80s L.A. who descend each evening from their luxury skyscraper condo and head into an electric nighttime realm. When they cross paths with the mysterious and enigmatic Nameless (Olsen) and her hard-partying cabal, Raoul and Alex are seduced into a glamorous, surrealistic world of hedonism, thrills, and violence.”

Panos Cosmatos directs The Flesh of the Gods from a screenplay by Se7en scribe Andrew Kevin Walker, based on a story by Cosmatos and Walker. Adam McKay joins the project as a producer alongside Betsy Koch of Hyperobject Industries and Gena Konstantinakos and Isaac for Mad Gene Media. The Flesh of the Gods heads to Cannes this week, though a production start date is unknown. The film’s significant star power makes scheduling difficult, though the stars should align at some point.

Elizabeth Olsen recently completed work on the David Freyne-directed comedic romance Eternity, starring Miles Teller, Callum Turner, Da’Vine Joy Randolph, and John Early. In Eternity, everybody gets one week to choose where to spend eternity after death. For Joan, Larry, and Luke, it’s a question of who to spend it with. In addition to the upcoming conspiracy thriller from Sam Esmail, Panic Carefully, starring Olsen, Julia Roberts, Eddie Redmayne, and Brian Tyree Henry, Olsen is hard at work shooting the Seven Sisters TV series. In Seven Sisters, a tight-knit family begins to unravel when a sister starts communicating with a voice no one else can hear. Seven Sisters stars Cristin Milioti, Elizabeth Olsen, Anthony Edwards, Meredith Hagner, Odessa Young, Ryan Eggold, J Smith-Cmaeron, Phillip Ettinger, Zoe Winters, Bridget Brown, and Carolyn Kettig.

Did you see Panmatos’s Mandy? That movie is a head trip and a half. I’m excited to see what he’ll do with the ’80s party scene with vampires owning the night. Are you intrigued by Elizabeth Olsen joining the cast of Flesh of the Gods? Let us know in the comments section below.

Final Destination: Bloodlines directors aimed to throw viewers for a loop and keep things unpredictable https://www.joblo.com/final-destination-bloodlines-directors/ https://www.joblo.com/final-destination-bloodlines-directors/#respond Tue, 13 May 2025 17:38:31 +0000 https://www.joblo.com/?p=838066 Final Destination: Bloodlines directors Zach Lipovsky and Adam B. Stein hope to throw viewers for a loop and keep them guessing

Last year, Final Destination 6 (which is going by the title Final Destination: Bloodlines) finally, after years of development and a long year gap between sequels, made its way through production. Franchise producer Craig Perry previously let it be known that the film was aiming for a theatrical release in 2025, in time to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the release of the original film. It will even be on IMAX screens! It was recently confirmed that Final Destination: Bloodlines is set to reach theatres this Friday. The directing duo of Zach Lipovsky and Adam B. Stein, who previously directed the 2018 film Freaks (starring Emile Hirsch and Bruce Dern) and the 2019 live-action Kim Possible movie, were at the helm of this film – and during an interview with SFX magazine, Lipovsky said their hope is that the movie will throw viewers for a loop and keep them guessing because things play out in unpredictable ways.

Final Destination: Bloodlines has the following synopsis: Plagued by a violent recurring nightmare, college student Stefanie heads home to track down the one person who might be able to break the cycle and save her family from the grisly demise that inevitably awaits them all. It has been rated R for strong violent / grisly accidents, and language.

Tony Todd is joined in the cast by Brec Bassinger, Richard Harmon, Kaitlyn Santa Juana, Teo Briones, Rya Kihlstedt, Anna Lore, Owen Patrick Joyner, Max Lloyd-Jones, Andrew Tinpo Lee, April Amber Telek, and Alex Zahara.

Lipovsky revealed to SFX magazine, “For this film, the first premonition takes place in 1969. There are lots of deaths during the premonition, which is what normally happens in the opening sequence of a Final Destination movie, but we then come out of the eye of a different person in the modern day. That’s new. For a lot of fans, I think that’s going to immediately throw them for a loop. It’s going to make them lean forward to try and figure out what’s going on. As moviegoers, we love it when you have to lean forward in your seat because a movie is being unpredictable. We switch up a lot of the predictability, including who’s going to die next and how they are going to die. You might think it’s one person, but it’s not. There’s a delight in that.

For me, the Final Destination films have always been delightful. That’s why this is my favorite horror franchise of the 2000s, and I’m hyped that it’s finally coming back. I’ve been waiting for this movie ever since the opening weekend of Final Destination 5 way back in 2011.

Jon Watts, director of Spider-Man: Homecoming, Spider-Man: Far from Home, and Spider-Man: No Way Home, is producing Final Destination: Bloodlines with Perry, Dianne McGunigle, and Sheila Hanahan Taylor. Watts came up with the initial idea, which was fleshed out into a screenplay by Lori Evans Taylor and Guy Busick.

Are you looking forward to Final Destination: Bloodlines? Let us know by leaving a comment below.

The Spierig brothers are set to helm a new re-imagining of the headless horseman, titled Headless https://www.joblo.com/the-spierig-brothers-headless/ https://www.joblo.com/the-spierig-brothers-headless/#respond Tue, 13 May 2025 15:09:32 +0000 https://www.joblo.com/?p=840697 The minds behind Predestination, Jigsaw and Winchester will be adapting the headless horseman into a modern-day setting.

Deadline is reporting that the filmmaking duo behind Daybreakers, Jigsaw and Winchester will be adapting the headless horseman mythology for a contemporary setting for their new film Headless. The duo, Michael and Peter Spierig – a.k.a. The Spierig Brothers — are said to be paying nods to Mad Max and The Terminator in this new re-imagining, with the production even taking place in Australia, where the Mad Max movies were produced.

The synopsis reads, “A rudderless hitchhiker and a driven woman avenging her family’s death must stop a motorcycle-riding semi-immortal ghoul that feeds off the carnage it causes on desert highways by decapitating it and getting its head far enough away, long enough, from its relentlessly pursuant still-living body.” The film is written by Shane Armstrong (The Contents) and S.P. Krause (The Contents). The film is set to be produced by industry vet Chris Brown (Daybreakers) for his Picture in Paradise label, Martin Metz (Mandy) for Rosewood Pictures and Diana Le Dean (Sting) and developed with support from Screen Queensland.

Altitude will be handling the international sales and is planning to put the project up for buyers on the Cannes Croisette sometime this week. Additionally, Rialto has acquired distribution rights to the film for Australia and New Zealand. Production is set to start in Australia later this year.

The Spierig Brothers were also recently announced to be taking over directing duties for Netflix’s sequel to Fall. Capstone Studios’ CEO, Christian Mercuri, announced that Fall 2 is set to be directed by the brothers, and Mercuri will be producing with Mark Lane and James Harris of Tea Shop Productions, David Haring, and Scott Mann via the Flawless banner. The Spierig Brothers provided the following statement: “We’re extremely excited to helm the second installment of this franchise and bring to life another nail biting, vertigo inducing thrill ride.“

Mann added: “I am so proud to hand over the reins to the Spierigs, two highly respected genre directors whose addition will undoubtedly make this follow-up even more of a must-see experience than we already knew it would be. I can’t wait for Flawless to work alongside them, and the rest of our fantastic filmmaking team, to take the Fall franchise to epic new heights.“

Details on the plot and characters have not been revealed, but we do know that Fall 2 and Fall 3 will bring back original characters from the first film, while also leaving room for new ones to be introduced. Mann has written the script for Fall 2 with Jonathan Frank, his co-writer on the first film.

A press release includes information on the Spierig Brothers: “Michael and Peter Spierig are best known for Lionsgate’s Winchester starring Helen Mirren and Sarah Snook and Jigsaw, the eighth film in the Saw series, one of the most successful franchises ever produced. Additional credits include Daybreakers starring Ethan Hawke and Willem Dafoe, Predestination starring Ethan Hawke and Sarah Snook, and the award-winning zombie film Undead.“

Daisy Ridley’s We Bury the Dead is bought by Vertical Entertainment ahead of Cannes https://www.joblo.com/we-bury-the-dead-vertical/ https://www.joblo.com/we-bury-the-dead-vertical/#respond Mon, 12 May 2025 19:38:16 +0000 https://www.joblo.com/?p=840580 Daisy Ridley's new post-apocalyptic zombie film has been purchased prior to the start of the Cannes Festival market.

The upcoming Cannes market is seeing a whole slew of films picked up by distributors, including the 70s serial killer thriller, Golden State Killer, starring James Franco and Vincent Gallo. Deadline is now reporting that Daisy Ridley’s post-apocalyptic zombie film, We Bury the Dead, has also been sold. We Bury the Dead has been acquired by Vertical Entertainment.

Vertical Partner Peter Jarowey made a statement about the acquisition that said, “With a great cast led by Daisy Ridley and Brenton Thwaites, Zak has re-energized the zombie genre with We Bury the Dead. Next year, North American audiences will be on the edge of their seats watching this post-apocalyptic thriller.” Scripted by Hilditch, We Bury the Dead is said to be “a story about grief, loss, and the undead.” Ridley takes on the role of Ava, a desperate woman whose husband is missing in the aftermath of a catastrophic military experiment. Hoping to find him alive, Ava joins a “body retrieval unit,” but her search takes a chilling turn when the corpses she’s burying start showing signs of life.

Ridley is joined in the cast by Brenton Thwaites (Titans) and Mark Coles Smith (Mystery Road: Origin). The project was fully financed by Screen Australia, Screenwest, Lotterywest, the WA Regional Screen Fund, and Gramercy Park Media. We Bury the Dead is being produced by Kelvin Munro and Grant Sputore of The Penguin Empire, as well as Ross Dinerstein of Campfire Studios and Joshua Harris and Mark Fasano of Gramercy Park Media. Nathan Klingher and Ford Corbett are executive producing.

When We Bury the Dead was first announced, Sputore provided the following statement: “We’re thrilled to join forces with Zak and Campfire on this project. Zak is uniquely gifted when it comes to making movies that are just as moving as they are terrifying. Bringing one of his projects to our home state of Western Australia is especially exciting.“ Hilditch had this to say: “Having Daisy play the role of Ava is an absolute dream come true. She embodies the perfect mix of vulnerability, grit, and determination that Ava exudes throughout the film.“

When the film screened at SXSW, our Chris Bumbray found the movie to be nothing particularly special when he said in his review, “As such, We Bury the Dead, for all its ambitions, can’t help but occasionally feel like a retread. With so much zombie content out there, it’s very difficult to add anything new to the genre. Inevitably, this movie doesn’t manage to overcome the familiarity of the genre, but even still, it is mostly entertaining for much of its running time thanks to the ace technical packaging, and good performances from Ridley and Thwaites. It’s solid but unspectacular.”

James Franco and Vincent Gallo’s Golden State Killer gets picked up by Grindstone Entertainment https://www.joblo.com/golden-state-killer-grindstone-entertainment/ https://www.joblo.com/golden-state-killer-grindstone-entertainment/#respond Mon, 12 May 2025 18:38:14 +0000 https://www.joblo.com/?p=840554 The 1970s serial killer thriller goes on sale at Cannes from Lionsgate, while Lionsgate's studio partner handles the American distribution.

Formally titled The Policeman, James Franco and Vincent Gallo‘s serial killer film, now called Golden State Killer, will now be getting domestic distribution thanks to Lionsgate. Deadline is now reporting that the true crime thriller will go on sale this week at Cannes with Lionsgate after their studio partner, Grindstone Entertainment, has picked up the domestic distribution rights. Golden State Killer is currently in the post-production process. However, the film has gone through some controversy last year when it had been scrutinized by the SAG-AFTRA union over complaints of misconduct against Vincent Gallo by multiple female actors.

Producers on the film include Scott Clayton, Jordan Gertner, Barry Brooker, Todd Williams, and Gary A. Hirsch. Gertner was also previously attached as the writer and director. However, Deadline is now saying that it is no longer the case. The description reads, “Written and directed by Vito Brown, the movie has Gallo playing Golden State killer Joseph James DeAngelo, the serial murderer and rapist who began terrorizing California residents all the way back in the 1970s, only being brought to justice in 2018. Franco plays a detective who faces the impossible task of finding the serial killer at the height of his crime spree before he can claim his next victims.”

After many years of lying low (although he did film two more seasons of The Deuce), Franco has re-emerged, with him acting now mostly in European fare, such as the Italian-language film Joe, plus a sequel to the French film Largo Winch, and some U.S indie flicks. In a recent interview with Variety, Franco said he was “grateful to be working.” However, he admitted that several of his wrapped films, including a controversial one where he’s playing Fidel Castro, are stuck in limbo. “I honestly don’t know what’s happening with that release,” he says about the Castro project.

While he also wrapped an action film called The Razor’s Edge with Tommy Lee Jones, Franco sounds philosophical about a return to directing or prominence, saying, “…I think one thing that I’ve learned is just patience and to understand when the time is right that right things will come to you.”

The post How Tony Todd bids farewell to fans in Final Destination Bloodlines appeared first on JoBlo.

When Tony Todd passed away last year, movie fans lost a true horror icon. Not surprisingly, he had a number of movies that had yet to come out; but the last one will fittingly be Final Destination Bloodlines, in which he reprises his franchise character William Bludworth, a character he played in the first, second and fifth Final Destination movies.

With Final Destination Bloodlines, Tony Todd in a way had the chance to speak to the fans who have supported him throughout the decades. As producer Craig Perry noted, “Zach [Lipovsky] and Adam [Stein], our directors, they made a very shrewd decision to take the last couple of lines that were scripted and say, ‘Tony, just say what you would want to say to the fans. What would you like to impart to them in this moment?’ So, everything that makes that scene so emotional is authentic because that was just Tony talking through the camera to the very fans who supported him for so many years. So, it was a very magical moment on set. It was an impactful moment, and it’s one I’ll take with me until I go to the grave.” Perry also stated, “We all knew that he was obviously quite ill, and it was pretty clear that this was going to be the last role he would play in a movie. And the fact that it was one of the Final Destination movies made it that much more poignant.”

That’s a pretty touching moment – and no doubt creates a memorable monologue – especially considering Final Destination Bloodlines would end up being his final film, one that he is clearly in a much weaker and frailer state in.

The promos for Final Destination Bloodlines have put a lot of attention on Tony Todd. This may have been part of the plan to begin with considering Bludworth has been a fan favorite character in the franchise, but now it all feels like a fitting tribute to Todd, not just for his work in the Final Destination movies but his contributions to the horror genre as a whole.

A sixth Final Destination has been on the table for a number of years now, with the idea to reimagine the franchise, which hadn’t had a movie since 2011. That concept has long since been replaced, so you can see how Bloodlines fits in when it hits theaters on May 16th.

Now, Neon has released a brand new teaser poster for Alpha. You can view it below.

We can’t wait to bring the film to market in Cannes and to launch sales together for the first time and collaborate in this way.“ However, that’s all they would say about Alpha, as the plot details are being kept under wraps for now.
