The filmmaker who never sleeps, Chad Stahelski, is boarding another project with Sentinel, an upcoming action thriller about a rogue drone on the loose! The deal finds Stahelski’s 87Eleven Entertainment partnering with Capstone Studios for what the union hopes is a franchise starter.

J. Houston Yang (Good Boy (short), Abduction, Up Next) directs Sentinel, based on a story he wrote and a screenplay from Joe Barnathan and Marcus Rinehart. Capstone and WME Independent are bringing the package to the Cannes market. Production could start as early as this fall, with Stahelski producing alongside 87Eleven cohorts Alex Young, Jason Spitz, and Christian Mercuri from Capstone and Marc Goldberg. David Haring and Roman Viaris will executive produce via Capstone Studios.

According to Deadline‘s exclusive report, Sentinel focuses on “a blue-collar mechanic who finds himself on the run in an unforgiving wilderness hunted by a killer, a ruthless drone gone rogue, after he witnesses the assassination of his boss. With only an unlikely companion at his side, he has to survive a brutal and uncover the truth.”

“We are excited to partner with Capstone Studios to create this new, near-future action franchise,” said Stahelski and Young of 87Eleven. “The franchise focuses on elements of the future that have every potential to scare humanity. Houston’s fresh take on our overall concept will intrigue international audiences and leave them craving more.”

Yang is a seasoned Hollywood filmmaker with editorial and action designer chops. He’s contributed to trailer editing, been a pitch consultant for over a decade, and is ready to step into the action spotlight with Sentinel.

Chad Stahelski continues tackling one Hollywood project after another with his Highlander remake (starring Henry Cavill) and an adaptation of Sucker Punch’s Ghost of Tsushima in pre-production. Stahelski directs Highlander from a script by Ryan J. Condal, Michael Finch, and Kerry Williamson. Henry Cavill stars in Highlander as an immortal Scottish swordsman who faces off with other immortal warriors to obtain a coveted ability. Meanwhile, Ghost of Tsushima focuses on the Samurai warrior Jin Sakai, the last surviving member of his clan, who must set aside the traditions that have shaped him as a warrior to wage an unconventional war for the freedom of Tsushima. A sequel to Sucker Punch’s Ghost of Tsushima video game, Ghost of Yōtei, is due to release on the PlayStation 5 console on October 2, 2025.

Dan Trachtenberg (Prey, 10 Cloverfield Lane, The Boys) shows no signs of loosening his stranglehold on the Predator franchise. He’s got several projects featuring the classic science-fiction horror hunters stealthily sneaking toward screens large and small, including Predator: Badlands. Today, 20th Century Studios is ready to unleash the latest trailer and poster for Predator: Killer of Killers, an original animated anthology set in the Predator universe, releasing on June 6, 2025.

Here’s the official description for Predator: Killer of Killers from 20th Century Studios and Hulu:

“The anthology story follows three of the fiercest warriors in human history: a Viking raider guiding her young son on a bloody quest for revenge, a ninja in feudal Japan who turns against his Samurai brother in a brutal battle for succession, and a WWII pilot who takes to the sky to investigate an otherworldly threat to the Allied cause. But while all these warriors are killers in their own right, they are merely prey for their new opponent – the ultimate killer of killers.”

Predator: Killer of Killers is directed by Dan Trachtenberg with Josh Wassung, from animation company The Third Floor, serving as co-director. The film stars Lindsay LaVanchy, Louis Ozawa, Rick Gonzalez, and Michael Biehn and is written by Micho Robert Rutare and story by Trachtenberg and Rutare, based on characters created by Jim Thomas & John Thomas. The producers are John Davis, Dan Trachtenberg, Marc Toberoff, and Ben Rosenblatt, with Lawrence Gordon, James E. Thomas, John C. Thomas, and Stefan Grube as executive producers.

The latest Predator: Killer of Killers trailer showcases the anthology’s Predators, tortured human warriors, and nonstop ultraviolence. The animation gives off Arcane vibes, with visceral violence that harkens back to the extreme carnage of the Mortal Kombat video game series. The three different stories drop audiences at the center of multiple battlefields where chances of survival are slim to none. In addition to matching wits with the Predators, the humans battle inner turmoil, navigate interpersonal squabbles, and watch their loved ones get picked off individually.

What do you think about the latest Predator: Killer of Killers trailer? Do you like the animation style? Can the anthology stand proudly alongside the film franchise? Let us know in the comments section below.

Tom Cruise says he’ll never stop making movies and will go into his 100s https://www.joblo.com/tom-cruise-making-movies-into-100s/ https://www.joblo.com/tom-cruise-making-movies-into-100s/#respond Mon, 19 May 2025 13:02:56 +0000 https://www.joblo.com/?p=841526 While the Mission: Impossible franchise may come to an end with The Final Reckoning, Cruise himself is not ready to throw in the towel.

While there has been debate about whether or not the “movie star” is still an existing concept, Tom Cruise is a name that can still be plastered on posters and marquees and it can almost guarantee quality. While he’s been tied to Mission: Impossible for years, the star also will be starring in an upcoming Alejandro Iñárritu film, plans to reunite with Doug Liman in the supernatural thriller Deeper, also plans to reunite with Christopher McQuarrie on a “gnarly” R-rated film, and of course, the planned first film to be shot in space.

At 62, Cruise previously stated that Harrison Ford’s continued career inspires him to keep going into his 80s. Cruise amended his statement as he spoke with The Hollywood Reporter. In an interview with THR on the red carpet for Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, Cruise corrected himself,

I actually said I’m going to make movies into my 80s; actually, I’m going to make them into my 100s. I will never stop. I will never stop doing action, I will never stop doing drama, comedy films — I’m excited.”

With The Final Reckoning celebrating Ethan Hunt’s journey throughout the franchise, Cruise found hardship in trying to pick the most rewarding aspect of making the series because “there’s been so many levels of reward with the filmmakers that I’ve collaborated with, the crews, the people, the cultures that we’ve worked in. Everything that I’ve learned and continue to learn about storytelling, about life, about leadership, about character and every aspect of filmmaking. It’s been exceptional, it really is exceptional. I feel very fortunate to be able to make the films that I make and I love it, I just making movies.”

The big draws of each entry are the jaw-dropping stunt sequences and when Cruise was asked if there were any traditions that he picked up in preparation for the stunts, the star replied, “There’s a lot of pre-stunt rituals that keep me alive — it depends on what I’m doing and the amount of preparation I have to do. A lot of thought goes into it, and they are very complex and very interesting.”

Today must be a day that ends in “Y” because Lionsgate is back with another high-profile casting for its upcoming Hunger Games prequel. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Ralph Fiennes (Conclave, Schindler’s List, The Grand Budapest Hotel) will play President Coriolanus Snow in The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping. President Snow is a staple of the Hunger Games series, serving as one of the franchise’s primary antagonists in most cases. President Snow is an autocrat who ruled over Panem for over two decades.

After losing his parents at a young age, Coriolanus – or Coryo, as his cousin Tigis used to call him – climbed through the social ranks to restore his family’s name. He graduated from the University with exceptionally high marks and briefly served as a Peacekeeper before becoming a Gamemaker. His strategy involved instituting several new reforms and the establishment of Victor’s Village. He continued to vanquish his enemies until he ascended to the presidency of Panem. He’s a real piece of work.

Donald Sutherland portrayed President Coriolanus Snow in the original Hunger Games movies. In contrast, Tom Blyth played a younger version of the character opposite Rachel Zegler’s Lucy Gray Baird in The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes.

Ralph Fiennes joins Joseph Zada as Haymitch Abernathy, Whitney Peak as Lenore Dove Baird, Mckenna Grace as Maysilee Donner, Jesse Plemons as Plutarch Heavensbee, Kelvin Harrison Jr. as Beetee, Maya Hawke as Wiress, and Lily Taylor as Mags. Additionally, Glenn Close is reportedly negotiating for an undisclosed role.

Here is a synopsis for The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping novel courtesy of Amazon:

When you’ve been set up to lose everything you love, what is there left to fight for?

As the day dawns on the fiftieth annual Hunger Games, fear grips the districts of Panem. This year, in honor of the Quarter Quell, twice as many tributes will be taken from their homes.

Back in District 12, Haymitch Abernathy is trying not to think too hard about his chances. All he cares about is making it through the day and being with the girl he loves.

When Haymitch’s name is called, he can feel all his dreams break. He’s torn from his family and his love, shuttled to the Capitol with the three other District 12 tributes: a young friend who’s nearly a sister to him, a compulsive oddsmaker, and the most stuck-up girl in town. As the Games begin, Haymitch understands he’s been set up to fail. But there’s something in him that wants to fight . . . and have that fight reverberate far beyond the deadly arena.

Francis Lawrence directs The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping from a screenplay by Billy Ray, based on the novel by Suzanne Collins. The five films in the Hunger Games franchise have grossed over $3.3 billion worldwide. The films resonate with the fans of Susan Collins’ novels, bringing her saga of survival, revolution, and perseverance to life like never before. Fans are thrilled to see another chapter of the story adapted for the silver screen, and theater owners are excited to volunteer as tribute to sell tickets to the saga’s rabid fanbase.

Sydney Sweeney’s Split Fiction and Deeper with Tom Cruise and Ana De Armas poised to test choppy Hollywood waters https://www.joblo.com/split-fiction-deeper-tom-cruise/ https://www.joblo.com/split-fiction-deeper-tom-cruise/#respond Fri, 16 May 2025 17:50:46 +0000 https://www.joblo.com/?p=841346 Hollywood needs movies like Sydney Sweeney's Split Fiction and Tom Cruise's Deeper to succeed if they want the industry to thrive.

While Hollywood continues to claw its way out of “Recovery Mode” after the pandemic and SAG-AFTRA strikes, movies like A Minecraft Movie, Sinners, Deadpool & Wolverine, and Ne Zha 2 serve as the building blocks to fortify the industry’s future. Executives whose job is to read the tea leaves recignize the success of movies like A Minecraft Movie ($911M+) and Sonic the Hedgehog 3 ($492M+). They see these beloved properties raking in dollars and want to capitalize on the trend. That’s why Jon M. Chu’s upcoming adaptation of Split Fiction is a growing concern. The video game from Hazelight Studios offers an excellent opportunity to cash in on the video game-to-silver-screen craze, especially with Sydney Sweeney in line to star. Add the Tom Cruise and Ana De Armas supernatural feature Deeper to the mix, and we see studios taking big swings to keep blood and money pumping through Hollywood’s veins.

In addition to landing Wicked helmer Jon M. Chu to direct, Deadpool & Wolverine scribes Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick will pen the adaptation of Split Fiction. The concept revolves around two female leads, authors Mio Hudson and Zoe Foster, who become imprisoned in the world of their stories. To survive the ordeal, they must work together to escape and defeat the machine that keeps them attached to their respective worlds. It’s the kind of high-concept project that Hollywood loves, but only if it works.

Another high-profile project with lofty expectations is Tom Cruise’s supernatural film Deeper. Doug Liman directs Deeper, with Ballerina‘s Ana De Armas rumored to star alongside Cruise. Recently, Cruise and Armas were spotted together, with whispers of the duo undergoing diving training. According to Deadline, Deeper “follows an astronaut who encounters a terrifying force while on a deep dive into a never-before-explored trench.” Based on a Max Landis spec, the project has reportedly been developing for over a decade.

Additionally, Deadline says they hear Christopher McQuarrie is looking at the script. Previously, Bradley Cooper would be the star, with Kornél Mundruczó directing. After that idea stalled, Idris Elba circled the project with Baltasar Kormákur directing. That didn’t work out, either.

With video game adaptations being one of Hollywood’s hottest tickets and Tom Cruise being… well, Tom Cruise, the future looks so bright it might need to wear shades. Of course, this all hinges on audiences showing up.

Is Hollywood in good hands with projects like Split Fiction and Deeper? Let us know in the comments section below.

John Rambo: A Rambo origin movie set before First Blood is locked and loaded for Cannes https://www.joblo.com/john-rambo-origin-movie-cannes/ https://www.joblo.com/john-rambo-origin-movie-cannes/#respond Thu, 15 May 2025 19:44:26 +0000 https://www.joblo.com/?p=841177 A First Blood prequel, John Rambo, is heading to the Cannes Film Festival courtesy of Millennium Media and director Jalmari Helander.

Millennium Media will march into this year’s Cannes Film Festival armed to the teeth with entertainment for action fans when it brings John Rambo, an origin film featuring the iconic action hero portrayed by Sylvester Stallone, to the annual market event. John Rambo is a prequel to 1982’s First Blood, the movie featuring Stallone as John Rambo, a veteran Green Beret forced by a cruel Sheriff and his deputies to flee into the mountains and wage an escalating one-person war against his pursuers.

Jalmari Helander (Rare Exports, Big Game, Sisu) directs John Rambo, based on a script by Rory Haines and Sohrab Noshirvani (Black Adam). Filming could start in Thailand in October if everything goes according to plan.

The plot of John Rambo’s story is unknown, though we know it takes place before the events of First Blood. The project focuses on the Vietnam War vet’s early days, and casting is in the early stages. Oddly, Sylvester Stallone is aware of the project but is not involved. According to Deadline, producers are open to Stallone taking part in the film’s production if a role arises. Hmmmm.

David Morell created the John Rambo character. First Blood was the first in a five-film franchise that banked $800M+ worldwide. The latest film in the Rambo franchise, Rambo: Last Blood, fell under the weight of its own traps at the box office with $92M worldwide. Last Blood found John Rambo confronting his past and unearthing his ruthless combat skills to exact revenge in a final mission. While the film didn’t wow audiences, many Rambo fans found the film’s final act, featuring Rambo strategically offing enemies in a maze-like underground network of tunnels, wholly satisfying. Last Blood is brutal in ways you wouldn’t expect.

“We are thrilled to introduce a fresh new chapter to the Rambo legacy. This project is a tribute to one of the best franchises in movie history that will appeal to both longtime fans and new audiences alike,” said Millennium President Jonathan Yunger. “With Jalmari Helander at the helm — a filmmaker of exceptional vision and energy — we’ve found the perfect director to deliver a high-concept action-packed experience.”

“I have been the biggest fan of Rambo since the age of 11. It is so surreal to be in a situation where I can actually make my own Rambo movie,” added Helander. “The chain of events that got me here makes, in a fantastic way, my whole childhood make sense. I can’t wait to bring the greatest action hero back to the big screen where he belongs.”

What do you think about a Rambo movie without Stallone’s involvement (so far)? Who could play a young John Rambo? Let’s see your suggestions in the comments section below.

The cast of The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping is overflowing with young talent. Previously, we learned Joseph Zada (We Were Liars, Total Control, Invisible Boys), Whitney Peak (Home Before Dark, Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, Molly’s Game), Mckenna Grace (Gifted, The Handmaid’s Tale, Ghostbusters: Afterlife), Kelvin Harrison Jr. (Mufasa: The Lion King, It Comes at Night, Elvis), Jesse Plemons (Civil War, Breaking Bad, The Irishman) will star in the highly anticipated prequel The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping, and now we’re hearing that Maya Hawke (Stranger Things, Fear Street: Part One – 1994, Inside Out 2) is joining the cast.

According to a cast round-up making the scene online, Maya Hawke plays Wiress in The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping. Wiress is a former Hunger Games champion who has become a District 12 mentor. She was the victor of the 49th Hunger Games alongside her district colleague Beetee Latier. Wiress is an eccentric warrior and rebel, which we know is the type of character Maya Hawke can play to perfection. Previously, Amanda Plummer played Wiress in The Hunger Games: Catching Fire.

Maya Hawke joins Joseph Zada as Haymitch Abernathy, Whitney Peak as Lenore Dove Baird, Mckenna Grace as Maysilee Donner, Jesse Plemons as Plutarch Heavensbee, and Kelvin Harrison Jr. as Beetee. Additionally, Glenn Close is reportedly negotiating for an undisclosed role.

Please mark your calendars because the unstoppable Taylor Sheridan (Yellowstone, Tulsa King, 1923) is finally bringing his long-gestating action thriller F.A.S.T. to theaters on April 23, 2027. Sheridan’s latest project has dabbled with studios at the top of the Hollywood food chain before landing at Warner Bros. F.A.S.T. stars Brandon Sklenar (1923, Drop, It Ends with Us) with 1923’s primary director and renowned cinematographer Ben Richardson along for the ride.

F.A.S.T. marks Richardson’s feature directorial debut, which David Heyman and Jeffrey Clifford of Heyday Films will produce, with Taylor Sheridan and Jenny Wood of Bosque Ranch Productions negotiating to join the effort.

“The breadth of Taylor Sheridan’s body of work is simply astounding and unparalleled in sheer excellence and consistent quality and we could not be more honored to be making this film with him,” Warner Bros. Motion Picture Group’s Michael De Luca and Pam Abdy said in a statement. “With the hugely talent director Ben Richardson behind the camera and the exceptional producing talents of Heyday Films and Bosque Ranch, we are thrilled to have such an incredible creative team bringing F.A.S.T. to the big screen.”

The Hollywood Reporter says F.A.S.T. revolves around a “former special forces commando, down on his luck after he returns Stateside, who is tapped by the DEA to lead a black op strike team against CIA-protected drug dealers in his town.”

THR says Sheridan wrote the F.A.S.T. screenplay in the mid-2010s when his bread and butter were scripting movies like Sicario, Hell or High Water, and Wind River. At first, Sheridan wanted to direct F.A.S.T. at Warners with Chris Pratt (Jurassic World, The Electric State, The Garfield Movie) in the lead role. Gavin O’Connor boarded the project to direct in 2019. Still, ownership of the studio exchanged hands, with new brass not seeing dollar signs in the concept with a $60 million to $70 million price tag for production. With the studio unwilling to foot the bill and the project costing too much money for a streamer, F.A.S.T. fell into production limbo.

Fast-forward to today when Taylor Sheridan is the backbone of Paramount+, and the thought of bringing F.A.S.T. to theaters is music to the executive’s ears. Granted, a budget still needs to be set, but they’ll figure it out.

Disney alum Kelvin Harrison Jr. is entering the Hunger Games! In addition to Kelvin Harrison Jr., Glenn Close is eyeing a role, but sources say her participation is uncertain. Contracts are tricky, and negotiations must align for Close to join the contest of champions from Panem.

Kelvin Harrison Jr. plays Beetee, champion of the 34th Hunger Games. Jeffrey Wright played Beetee in the original Hunger Games movies.

Kelvin Harrison Jr. joins Joseph Zada as Haymitch Abernathy, with Whitney Peak playing Haymitch’s girlfriend, Lenore Dove Baird. Jesse Plemons plays Plutarch Heavensbee, the Head Gamemaster for the 75th Hunger Games, taking the place of Seneca Crane, played by Wes Bentley in the Hunger Games film saga. Heavensbee is a secret rebel insider who becomes the commander of a District 13 rebel group during the Second Rebellion. Finally, McKenna Grace plays Maysilee Donner, Haymitch Abernathy’s fellow District 12 Tribute.

Bob Odenkirk returns as suburban husband, father and workaholic assassin Hutch Mansell in the new chapter to Nobody, the hit 2021 bare-knuckle action-thriller that opened at number one at the U.S. box office. Universal has just released the fun-filled trailer for Nobody 2. The follow-up to the original film that put a twist on the action genre twists things even further as it plays out surprisingly like a violent send-up of National Lampoon’s Vacation (complete with “Holiday Road” blasting in the background).

The description reads,
“Four years after he inadvertently took on the Russian mob, Hutch remains $30 million in debt to the criminal organization and is working it off with an unending string of hits on international thugs.

As much as he likes the slam-bang action of his “job,” Hutch and his wife Becca (International Emmy nominee Connie Nielsen) find themselves overworked and drifting apart. So, they decide to take their kids (Gage Munroe, Paisley Cadorath) on a short getaway to Wild Bill’s Majestic Midway and Waterpark, the one and only place where Hutch and his brother Harry (Grammy and Emmy nominee RZA) went on a vacation as kids.

With Hutch’s dad (Emmy winner Christopher Lloyd) in tow, the family arrives in the small tourist town of Plummerville (“Plummerville is Summerville!”), eager for some fun in the sun.

But when a minor encounter with some town bullies yanks the family into the crosshairs of a corrupt theme-park operator (John Ortiz; Fast and Furious franchise, Bumblebee) and his shady sheriff (Emmy and Golden Globe nominee Colin Hanks), Hutch finds himself the focus of the most unhinged, blood-thirsty crime boss he (or anyone) has ever encountered (Emmy winning and Oscar nominated screen icon, Sharon Stone).”

Nobody 2 is an 87North/Eighty Two Films/Odenkirk Provissiero Entertainment production, directed by Timo Tjahjanto (The Night Comes for UsThe Big 4). The screenplay is by returning writer Derek Kolstad (John WickDie Hart) and by Aaron Rabin (Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan), from a story by Derek Kolstad, based on characters created by Derek Kolstad.

This film’s returning producers are 87North founders Kelly McCormick (Bullet TrainThe Fall Guy) and David Leitch (Bullet TrainThe Fall Guy); Odenkirk Provissiero Entertainment founder Marc Provissiero (No Hard Feelings, PEN15), Eighty Two Films founder Braden Aftergood (Hell or High WaterSamaritan); and Bob Odenkirk (Better Call SaulBreaking Bad). The executive producer is David Hyman.

Pack your bags for when Nobody 2 hits theaters on August 15.

The Mission: Impossible films are known for their death-defying stunts, but for The Final Reckoning star Hayley Atwell, the most hair-raising moment didn’t come from a high-octane action scene — it came from an unexpected encounter with a polar bear.

The hairiest thing was coming into close proximity with a polar bear who visited the boat we were staying on,” Atwell told Entertainment Weekly. “He was very curious, but thankfully for us, looked well fed. He looked majestic.” If you’ve watched any nature documentaries (or encountered any in the wild), you’ll know that a hungry polar bear can be downright ferocious.

Despite the close encounter with the polar bear, Atwell said he “absolutely adored” working in the Arctic, adding “It’s not lost on me that where we were able to go and how I was able to work there was a lifetime opportunity and only one that could have come through working with Tom Cruise.

Atwell also teased that Grace is fully immersed in the world of the IMF this time. “In Dead Reckoning, Grace was a lone wolf, out for herself and distrustful of others,” she said. “It took her the whole movie to accept Ethan’s friendship and be part of a team. In this movie, she’s emotionally attached to her friends and has a purpose bigger than personal ambition. She’s begun her training in the IMF, and although she’s brave and competent, she’s in over her head, and this can get her into sticky situations.

We still don’t know a whole lot about The Final Reckoning, only that it will follow the story set up in Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning, in which Ethan and his team were tasked with stopping the Entity, a rogue AI capable of controlling global defence intelligence and financial networks. The film was originally titled Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part Two, but Paramount rethought its approach after the first movie was perceived as a box-office disappointment.

In addition to Tom Cruise as IMF agent Ethan Hunt, The Final Reckoning features Hayley Atwell, Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg, Esai Morales, Pom Klementieff, Henry Czerny, Holt McCallany, Janet McTeer, Nick Offerman, Hannah Waddingham, Tramell Tillman and Angela Bassett, Shea Whigham, Greg Tarzan Davis, Charles Parnell, Mark Gatiss, Rolf Saxon, and Lucy Tulugarjuk.

The Final Reckoning will hit theaters on May 23rd, and early box office projections hint that it could have a franchise-best opening.

Believe it or not, saving the day is often a thankless job. We want to think that bags of cash, a ticker-tape parade, and a key to the city that isn’t chocolate underneath the surface follow in the wake of superheroics. However, more often than not, it’s business as usual with your acts of derring-do as a footnote in someone else’s story. Unfortunately for Christopher Smith and his rag-tag team, they’re about to find out just how hard it is to get the credit they deserve in today’s teaser trailer for Peacemaker Season 2!

Does anyone else feel they’ve aged 1000 years since Peacemaker‘s Season 1 debut in January 2022? After months of teasing the show’s return, our first look at Peacemaker and the 11th Street Kids is finally here, and it’s a hell of a ride. In the Peacemaker Season 2 teaser trailer, Chris blows an interview that could have given him notoriety. Still, the people behind the glass are assholes – including Nathan Fillion’s Guy Gardner – and Chris decides he’s better off sticking with his original crew. It’s a good thing he does because the team is about to face the consequences of their actions as Rick Flag Sr. (Frank Grillo) looks to avenge his fallen son, Colonel Rick Flag (Joel Kinnaman), who Peacemaker killed in James Gunn‘s The Suicide Squad. Chris already regrets his actions that led to Rick’s death, but Rick Flag Sr. doesn’t know that, nor does he care.

Today’s teaser trailer also features a deep dive into Agent Emilia Harcourt’s (Jennifer Holland) rage issues, and inner demons. Tim Meadows gets a hilarious moment in the teaser as Langston Fleury, who delights in giving his team groan-worthy nicknames. In addition to Cena, Grillo, and Holland, Danielle Brooks returns as Leota Adebayo, Freddie Stroma as Adrian Chase, Steve Agee as John Economos, and Dee Bradley Baker as Eagly. We also catch a glimpse of Elizabeth Faith Ludlow as Keeya Adebayo.

What do you think about today’s Peacemaker Season 2 teaser trailer? Let us know in the comments section below.

The post The Fall Guy (1981-86): What Happened to the TV Show that spawned the movie? appeared first on JoBlo.

]]>

The 80s were a time when country music and a type of hero born of the good ol boy class that came into his own. This could be seen in shows like The Dukes of Hazzard, BJ and The Bear, as well as movies like Any Which Way But Loose and Smokey and the Bandit. They were a time of what would be considered fun action films and TV. Again, this was personified in shows where usually no one got seriously hurt, like The A-Team. The bad guys went to the same shooting school as your friendly neighborhood Stormtroopers. But, one TV show that would personify this “nobody better get hurt” adventure series was The Fall Guy.

The series was designed as a vehicle for star Lee Majors, who had become a household name thanks to The Six Million Dollar Man, but struggled to find a worthy follow-up. This would be it, with him playing Colt Seavers, a likeable stuntman who supplements his income in an interesting way: he moonlights as a bounty hunter. For Majors, this would be a passion project, with him even singing the theme song. The show became a major hit, with Majors riding a second wave of fame while his gorgeous co-star, Heather Thomas, would become one of the biggest pin-ups of the 80s. The show has just been given the big-screen treatment, with Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt starring in the well-received remake (read our review here), so now it’s time to pay tribute to the original show.

How did The Fall Guy get made?

The Fall Guy came to be in probably one of the most bizarre ways a TV show would happen. And yet…for those who grew up with the series and that epic theme song, it makes complete sense.

Glen Larson, a name Gone But Not Forgotten viewers should recognize, was one of the gods of 80s television. He was hanging out with a friend of his named David Somerville who just happened to be a member of a music group named The Diamonds. Somerville had written a theme song for a project about stuntmen called “The Ballad of the Unknown Stuntman,” which he was humming and singing. Larson heard him and asked his friend what it was. He had Somerville perform the whole song. Based on that song, Larson had an idea for a TV series.

Armed with Somerville and literally no script, Larson went in to pitch the idea of a show to ABC. The pitch consisted of Larson and Somerville singing the song. Lo and behold, that was enough for them, and the show got the greenlight. It’s as crazy as some scenarios Colt Seaver would wind up in.

Larson’s idea became a series that would give viewers exactly what was promised: crazy stunts and behind-the-scenes of what it was like making Hollywood action films. But consistently doing that for an hour a week would get really expensive and exhausting. So the lead character of our Fall Guy, Colt Seaver, would have a gig between his stunt jobs as a bounty hunter for bail jumpers, a scenario the film dropped for some reason. This concept would keep a level of action still going and allow Colt to use his stuntman abilities and training while dealing with this other dangerous line of work.

Where is The Fall Guy cast now?

The Fall Guy wasn’t a deep premise, but it was a hell of fun. And this was helped along in spades by casting Lee Majors as Colt Seaver. Majors had a history with Glenn Larson thanks to his work in Six Million Dollar Man. Lee was likable, had a glimmer in his eye, and was not from bionics this time. He had been around stuntmen and the industry for a while. He had a good ol boy charm, which was something that would work years later when he was cast in the role he seemed born for, Bruce Campbell’s father in Ash Vs Evil Dead.

Majors would do many of his stunts in the series besides singing the theme song. He also directed some episodes and produced the series. A number of the guest stars who would show up or cameo were friends of Majors who had been around a while by this point in his career in numerous TV and film roles, several which were based in the Western genre.

The Fall Guy definitely lent itself to this sort of “Redneck Cinema” genre, which was growing in popularity in the late 70s and early 80s, and Major’s western resume helped greatly with that mystique. It was something Larson would bring to the small screen in other series like The Misadventures of Sheriff Lobo, BJ and the Bear, and, to some extent, Simon and Simon.

Majors is still working in both TV and film, most notably in the previously mentioned Ash Vs Evil Dead where he gave as great a chin as Bruce Campbell on screen.

Douglas Barr played Howie Munson, the naïve and lovable sidekick for Colt. Howie loved the ladies and would try his hand at being a stuntman alongside Colt and Jody, using his many failed attempts at degrees in college to help out when needed. Barr’s charming smile, good looks, and loveable personality made him a great foil for Major’s, and there was a great chemistry there.

Barr had already been in a few TV series and films at this point. He’d go on to co-star alongside David Rappaport in the fantastic tv series called The Wizard as his bodyguard and partner. He’s since become more known for writing and directing TV movies like the Hallmark Channel’s Notes from the Heart Healer and Taking a Chance on Love. He’s also become a winery owner with the snazzily named Hollywood and Vine Cellars.

Heather Thomas played Jody, the stunt woman who helped keep Howie in line and was Colt’s right hand. Thomas was a stunning actress whose poster wound up on the wall of a LOT of 80s teenage boys. She appeared in several TV series in guest roles and some great cult films like Zapped alongside Scott Baio. But my favourites were the Fred Olen Ray-directed Cyclone opposite a very young Jeffrey Combs and Red Blooded American Girl, where she starred alongside Kim Coates, Christopher Plummer, and Andrew Stevens.

heather thomas the fall guy

Thomas’s time in Hollywood wasn’t an easy one though, and she’s talked about the struggles that happened while she was more in the public eye. Stalking became a life-threatening issue when one of Thomas’s stalkers came to her house and climbed a fence while brandishing a knife. Thomas did return to acting though and also became a writer, penning the book called Trophies.

Jo Ann Pflug would star for the first season as Big Jack, Colt’s bondswoman boss. Pflug was in many TV roles, TV films, and feature films. But I’ll always remember her as the fast-talking Louise Harper from The Night Strangler.

Markie Post would take over the bail woman role as Terri Shannon for all but the series’ last season. Post was a staple on TV throughout the 80s and had a massive career, with her most well-known role being Christine from Night Court. In fact, her commitment to being on The Fall Guy prevented her from joining Night Court until its third season. Sadly, she would pass away at the young age of 70 in 2021 after a long battle with cancer.

But, we can’t recite the cast of The Fall Guy without mentioning its most iconic character…and that’s Colt’s GMC Pick-Up. Many who owned the toy car version of this baby would have it race alongside the other famous vehicles of the 80s like KITT, The ATEAM Van, and, of course, The General Lee. The 1980’s was a magical time to be a car geek. The truck was a GMC K 2500 with some additions. They did many stunts and jumps with the trucks. Eventually, GMC would modify the pickups to help cut down on the number of them being trashed during stunts.

The Fall Guy would become a major, pun not intended, hit for ABC thanks to a great mix of comedy, action, and a massive guest star list. As said, Lee Majors got many friends to show up in the series. Just in the pilot alone, Lou Rawls would play Country Joe. And when you have a guy with a voice like Lou Rawls, you have to find someone with an equally unique voice to play the villain harassing him. That role went to Percy Rodrigues, the voice of over 100 movie trailers. When you heard that voice coming onto a trailer you knew you were in for something terrifying. From Jaws to The Exorcist, Rodriguez’s voice was always involved.

Besides Rawls and Rodrigues, Delta Burke would appear as a waitress, and Lara Parker was a very unhappy resident in town. Terry Kiser (Bernie from Weekend at Bernie’s) was Jody’s director. Eddie Albert, another staple from film and TV played Big John, the child hit and runner in a villainous turn.

James Coburn played himself, and so did Farrah Fawcett. Farrah’s appearance almost didn’t happen. In reality, she and Majors were getting divorced, and it was playing out across many tabloids and in the news. Her friends had asked her not to do the cameo, which was a really sweet moment where you could see the affection the actors still had for each other. But Farrah wanted to show the world that she and Majors weren’t at each other’s throats as the headlines would have you believe. So she did the cameo, which lends itself to the line Majors sings in the theme song (“I’ve been seen with Farrah”).

The guest stars and brief appearances over the show’s run were MASSIVE. Here’s a short sampling. Richard Kiel, Milton Berle, Linda Evans, Vincent Schiavelli, Lou Ferrigno, Tom Selleck, Heather Locklear, Richard Burton, Roy Rogers, Lindsay Wagner and many more. Much like Dukes of Hazzard, some country music performers like Johnny Lee, Mickey Gilley, Dottie West, Ray Stevens, and Charlie Daniels would be a part of the show.

But my favourite episode of The Fall Guy had to be the one that aired on October 31st, 1984…with the original title called October the 31st. This episode sees Colt, Howie, and Jody all at a supposedly haunted mansion alongside Elvira and John Carradine. But John isn’t the only Carradine here as his sons David, Keith, and Robert are also in the episode. This episode would be followed up the following year with October the 32nd, which would have Elvira return where Colt and company are filming a horror film and dealing with an escaped mental patient. This would see Doug McClure return as well as Schiavelli, and would also co-star Vernon Wells.

As I said previously, there were toy cars of Colt’s truck in different sizes and an airplane. The merchandise was huge, with things like lunchboxes, action figures, t-shirts, and a board game.

Overseas, the show was also a hit, with Fall Guy Annuals produced in the UK, which was something done for series like Doctor Who and the like. If you want to see the original Fall Guy series, you can order it on Amazon Prime.

Is the movie a fitting tribute?

The answer to the question of if Fall Guy should return has already been answered. This week, Ryan Gosling is starring in a big-budget remake feature film called The Fall Guy, with him playing Colt Seavers who in this isn’t a bounty hunter for bail jumpers but is simply a stuntman. The Jody here, played by Emily Blunt, isn’t his assistant but the film director of the project he’s working on and who also happens to be his ex-girlfriend. There’s no Howie around, but the rumour is that Lee Majors does have a role in the film, which follows Colt as he tries to find the missing leading man of the movie, Tom Ryder, played by Aaron Taylor Johnson before Jody’s film is shut down.

The trailers all show this looks like a great time with a funny and charming cast and lots of explosions and crazy stunts…which is exactly what The Fall Guy should be. It’s an amped-up peek into Hollywood. But more than that, it gives the guys and gals who risk their lives for our entertainment a spotlight that’s been well-deserved for a long time. And here’s hoping that with a film like this most assuredly being a hit, it will inspire the Oscars to give us a best Stunt Person award FINALLY. Check out our EIC Chris Bumbray’s review HERE!

According to Deadline, Marvel Studios is in early talks with Thunderbolts* director Jake Schreier to helm the upcoming X-Men movie. Nothing is official now, but insiders say Schreier is looking like the top choice after a successful meeting last week. Michael Lesslie (The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes) wrote the script for the X-Men movie, with Kevin Feige producing.

Since Disney officially acquired 20th Century Fox more than five years ago, Marvel fans have been eager for the inevitable day when the X-Men will finally join the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The franchise took small steps, with a few mentions of mutants, but it slowly led to appearances from Patrick Stewart as Professor X in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Kelsey Grammer as Beast in The Marvels, and, of course, Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman as the titular characters of Deadpool & Wolverine.

A number of X-Men characters will also be appearing in Avengers: Doomsday, with the officially announced cast including Patrick Stewart as Charles Xavier, Ian McKellen as Erik Lehnsherr, Alan Cumming as Kurt Wagner, Rebecca Romijn as Raven Darkhölme, James Marsden as Scott Summers, and Channing Tatum as Remy LeBeau. Other X-Men characters were included in a recent rumoured cast list, but it remains to be seen if it’s accurate. When it comes time for a proper X-Men movie, Marvel will almost certainly be introducing a new cast, but we should have a better idea of their plans after Avengers: Doomsday/Avengers: Secret Wars.

It was also recently revealed that Ryan Reynolds is actively developing ideas for a new Deadpool movie featuring several X-Men characters.

Thunderbolts* has been earning some decent reviews (the best since Spider-Man: No Way Home), but the box office has been disappointing. Our own Chris Bumbray said the film is a “significant step-up” from Captain America: Brave New World, but he cautioned that “it’s not the game-changer some of the breathless early junket reviews suggest.” However, Bumbray did enjoy the movie, saying he “had a better time with Thunderbolts than any other Marvel movie (outside Deadpool & Wolverine) in recent memory.” You can check out the rest of his review right here, and don’t forget to let us know what you thought of the film as well!

Do you think Thunderbolts* director Jake Schreier would be a good fit for X-Men?

New Line Cinema announced the release date for The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, opening in theaters on December 17, 2027. Andy Serkis directs The Hunt for Gollum, with Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh, Philippa Boyens, and Zane Weiner producing. The Hunt for Gollum is one of two new films set in Tolkien’s Middle-earth, destined for theaters from the producing group.

Andy Serkis is getting behind the camera for The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum and reprising his iconic role as the goblin-like scene-stealer for Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings trilogy. The director of the second film remains a mystery. Meanwhile, Walsh and Boyens will pen the screenplay alongside Phoebe Gittins and Arty Papageorgiou. Ken Kamins and Andy Serkis executive produce with The Imaginarium’s Jonathan Cavendish.

The Lord of the Rings isn’t the only franchise getting exciting news today. Evil Dead fans rejoice because New Line is officially co-financing the next chapter of the legendary horror series with Sony after the roaring success of Evil Dead Rise. The next Evil Dead film, Evil Dead Burn, stars Souheila Yacoub (No Man’s Land, The Braves, The Salt of Tears) and will be released in North America on July 24, 2026.

Last December, Warner released the underrated anime The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim, which only grossed $20.6M. In hindsight, the animation was a little funky, but the story was engrossing, and I enjoyed the new characters and story flow. Oh, well. As Les Claypool once said, “They can’t all be zingers.”

Where do you stand on the concept of a new Lord of the Rings movie focusing on Gollum? Will the film feature beloved characters or introduce new warriors to the famed franchise? If anyone can bring Gollum to the screen in a worthwhile way, it’s Andy Serkis. Are you tired of the Lord of the Rings franchise, or do you like the idea of another live-action adventure on the big screen? In the comments section below, let us know your thoughts about The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum.

Tell me you watched David Ayer’s The Beekeeper without telling me you watched David Ayer’s The Beekeeper. Blue Fox Entertainment is getting in on the unsuspecting hero action today with a trailer for The Gardener, starring martial arts legend Jean-Claude Van Damme (Bloodsport, Timecop, Universal Soldier) and Michael Youn (Les 11 Commandments, Fatal, Vive la France).

David Charhon (The Last Mercenary, On the Other Side of the Tracks, Cyprien) directs The Gardener from a script he co-wrote with Vincent De Brus (The Ballad of Titus) and Sebastian Fechner (A Mighty Team). The Gardener has the official logline: Serge, his family, and their gardener must escape a death list after he uncovers a state secret.

Here’s the official synopsis for The Gardener courtesy of Blue Fox Entertainment:

“Every year, the Prime Minister keeps a secret list of his political enemies to be removed. Serge Shuster, a senior official close to the presidency, finds himself named on the list — meaning he will be assassinated within 48 hours by a team of elite government hitmen. Condemned to a certain death, Serge, his wife, and his children only have one hope left: their strange gardener, Léo.”

Sebastien Fechner and Rose Productions produce The Gardener, which also stars Nawell Madani, Kaaris, Matthias Quiviger, Jérôme Le Banner, and Carla Poquin. The French-language action film includes an English-language dub.

In today’s trailer for The Gardener, Serge Shuster, a senior official close to the presidency, becomes a target for a gruff band of mercenaries. Serge isn’t a man of action per se, but his gardener, Léo, certainly is. When Léo discovers Serge’s brush with death, he leaps into action with his trusty tools of the gardening trade to wreak havoc on the unwanted party. The Gardener appears to blend slick martial arts action with some slapstick and environmental combat as Jean-Claude Van Damme proves he’s still got moves at 64 years old. Truth be told, he looks terrific. I love an action movie that isn’t too self-serious, and The Gardener looks like it will be a good time.

How much do you want to bet that Léo stabs a bad guy with shears and then opens the blades for additional damage and flair? The Gardener prunes surly mercenaries in select theaters and on VOD on June 6, 2025.

Fight or Flight Review: John Wick-style Action With Absurdist Humor https://www.joblo.com/fight-or-flight-review/ https://www.joblo.com/fight-or-flight-review/#respond Wed, 07 May 2025 14:02:00 +0000 https://www.joblo.com/?p=839576 Using John Wick-style action, Fight or Flight sets itself apart with a wacky lead performance from Josh Harnett that makes this a blast!

PLOT: A mercenary takes on the job of tracking down a target on a plane but must protect her when they’re surrounded by people trying to kill both of them.

REVIEW: Last year’s Trap proved no matter the film, Josh Hartnett will deliver a great performance that can anchor any story. It’s been awesome to see him back in leading roles and proving why he never should have left. And I don’t know about you, but I love an airplane movie. Air Force One, Red Eye, and even Snakes on Plane proved how much tense fun can be had aboard an airplane. Then you’ve got Fight or Flight, which pits one target against a plane full of assassins proving there are even more high stakes at being trapped 30,000 feet in the air. But as serious as it sounds, this is decidedly more funny than expected.

Fight or Flight is high energy from minute one and keeps the momentum going throughout the film. Following Lucas Reyes, a mercenary who has to protect a target known as The Ghost on a plane from the many assassins out to kill them. It’s a simple plot that has a lot of mileage due to the performance at the center by Josh Hartnett. Reyes clearly had a rough past and is drowning himself in drugs to escape reality. It’s far from the usual straight-laced action hero lead. He has a fun dynamic with Charithra Chandran‘s Isha, a flight attendant on the plane who helps Reyes.

A mercenary takes on the task of eliminating a high value target on a plane flight, but when an onslaught of rival assassins descend upon them both, he realizes they have to team up in order to survive. This is a kinetic action/thriller with levity – think JOHN WICK meets DIE HARD on a plane.

As a Battlestar Galactica fan, Katee Sackhoff can do no wrong, so it’s great to see her as the head of the organization that’s sending Reyes after The Ghost. She’s commanding but still has some humor to her, being more than just the typical “powerful leader” type. There are some fun twists and turns that will keep you guessing, while never feeling out of left field. I won’t deny that there aren’t some familiar beats to some of the reveals but it never enters corny territory. This is ridiculous and over the top, and fully embraces both. As much as I love logic, realism doesn’t always have to go with it. This doesn’t shy away from the absurd, and it makes it stand out tonally.

It’s hard to make an action movie these days, as pretty much everything has been done before. I appreciate creativity, even if it doesn’t break bank, and Fight or Flight really swings for the fences. The fight scenes take inspiration from John Wick, with long, unbroken takes, and hardly ever just a singular action. There are multiple beats happening within the frame, avoiding the nauseating shaky cam trend. It’s impactful and doesn’t feel overly choreographed. I love a high body count and this one gets pretty detailed in its carnage. These aren’t just a bunch of simple shootings. There are all sorts of weapons being used, ranging from chainsaws to fire sprinklers to climbing axes. It’s a great mix that prevents things from getting stale.

Fight or Flight review

The airplane has all the hallmarks of a classic plane movie set, being far larger than any plane I’ve seen. Take for example the bathroom, which is laughably large and has way more space than any actually have in reality. But that’s part of the fun. There are a couple of dumb moments, like a random yoga class whose only there to make fun of. But the few bits of sophomoric humor don’t ruin the otherwise fun film. The score follows the Hans Zimmer path, and Composer Paul Saunderson does a good job of making this fit in with modern action. Action scores feel like such an afterthought these days so it’s nice that it has some personality.

Similar to 2022’s Bullet Train, Fight or Flight is able to avoid the same mistakes, never trying to do too much and is very aware of its limitations. This isn’t a $100 Million film and it doesn’t need to be. They utilize their resources well and Hartnett as Lucas Reyes is just so damn fun. There’s a twist in this film that is so unexpected, yet makes everything so much better in hindsight, that it really ties a nice bow on it. And it really felt appropriate for the modern era. Here’s hoping that this lands with a bang, and we’re able to get the sequel that’s teased. Because I need more of this world.

FIGHT OR FLIGHT IS IN THEATERS ON MAY 9TH, 2025.

According to Variety, Chris Pine is set to star in Run the Night, an upcoming action thriller for Lionsgate and Hidden Pictures.

Run the Night follows a banker, who is “accused of betraying the Penose (the Dutch mob), who is dumped naked in the heart of Amsterdam with a $10 million bounty on his head. Hunted by the city’s most violent gangs, he must fight his way across the city by dawn to save the lives of his wife and child — a mission that reveals he was never just the money guy.

The film will mark Robert Alonzo’s feature directorial debut. He is a second-unit director and stunt coordinator who has worked on Star Trek, Deadpool, Den of Thieves, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, The Batman, and more. He’s also serving as second-unit director on Avengers: Doomsday, which is currently filming. The script comes from John Glenn and Alex Davidson. Todd Lieberman of Hidden Pictures will produce alongside Hidden Pictures president Alex Young; Chris Pine and Ian Gotler, via their Barry Linen banner, and John Glenn.

I love this story, character, and reuniting with Rob,” said Pine. “There are so many places for this character to go, and I’m excited about the possibilities of bringing him to life on the big screen.

Adam Fogelson, chair of Lionsgate Motion Picture Group, added, “Chris is an incredible actor and has the perfect combination of warmth and physicality needed to bring this role to life. We’re proud to be the home of Todd Lieberman’s Hidden Pictures and to be partnering with him and the exceptionally talented filmmaking team on this riveting and explosive action thriller.

Added Lieberman: “Rob Alonzo is the next great action director. With Rob’s talent behind the camera and our movie star Chris in front, I’m excited by what we have in store for audiences.

Run the Night isn’t Pine’s only project on his slate; he’s also expected to star in Nowhere Fast, written by Fargo‘s Noah Hawley. The film is described as a Texas crime thriller that follows “a small-town criminal who inadvertently kills the nephew of his boss.” Pine also made his directorial debut with Poolman, which was trashed by critics, including our own Chris Bumbray, who said in his review: “Poolman ranks with the worst movies I’ve ever reviewed at JoBlo. It’s a stunningly unfunny comic noir vanity project for star Chris Pine, who also directed and co-wrote the film. […] it has already become notorious at the festival for the amount of walkouts taking place at the screenings.” The actor disagrees. “I watched my film,” Pine said. “After the review in Toronto, I was like ‘maybe I did make a pile of sh*t.’ I went back and watched it. I f***ing love this film. I love this film so much.

Thunderbolts* writer reveals Taskmaster had a much different role in the original script https://www.joblo.com/thunderbolts-taskmaster-original-stor/ https://www.joblo.com/thunderbolts-taskmaster-original-stor/#respond Mon, 05 May 2025 21:14:47 +0000 https://www.joblo.com/?p=839431 Olga Kurylenko's Taskmaster had a much different role to play in the original script for Marvel's Thunderbolts*.

The post Thunderbolts* writer reveals Taskmaster had a much different role in the original script appeared first on JoBlo.

]]>
SPOILERS for Thunderbolts* (or whatever we’re supposed to call it now). The recently released film stars Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova, Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes, Wyatt Russell as John Walker, David Harbour as Red Guardian, Hannah John-Kamen as Ghost, and Olga Kurylenko as Taskmaster. Most movies undergo significant changes from the script to the screen, and Marvel’s Thunderbolts* is no exception, with Taskmaster receiving the biggest change.

It wasn’t exactly a massive surprise given her absence from much of the trailer footage, but Taskmaster was killed off very early after getting shot in the head by Ghost/Ava. However, in the original script by Eric Pearson, the character survived and had a much bigger role to play. When Pearson jumped ship to work on the script for The Fantastic Four: First Steps, he handed over scriptwriting duties to Joanna Calo and didn’t find out about the change until he watched the film’s first cut.

It was decided after my work,” Pearson told Polygon. “When I sat down to watch the first cut, one thing was totally different and shocked the hell out of me, and it was that. Everything else, I was like, ‘Yeah, that’s the movie that I wrote!’ But that decision…

Pearson isn’t sure why the change was made, “But if I were to guess, it would be to get the reaction that I had as an audience member, like, ‘Whoa, we’re upping the stakes, we’re doing something drastic really fast, and we’re putting everybody on edge.’” The original story arc found Taskmaster bonding with Ghost as they’d both been raised in labs and trained as weapons. “And Ava, having won her autonomy earlier in the chronology than Taskmaster, was kind of big-sistering her a little bit, in a way of ‘how to break free and be your own person,’” Pearson said.

There also would have been a running joke of Taskmaster trying to assassinate John Walker after forgetting they’d become friends. “On the comedy side, she was struggling with her own memory-loss stuff, and there was a gag where she just kept restarting the fight and forgetting that they had made up and become friends,” Pearson explained. “They would be discussing the plan of how to get out [of the vault], and she’d just go after him again, and they’d all have to pig-pile on each other, and pull her off, and be like, ‘No, we know each other! We’ve had this conversation before!’

Pearson wondered if this was ditched due to Bob’s (Lewis Pullman) own memory issues. “That could contribute as another reason why they chose to bring her out of the movie,” he said. “Bob was obviously having memory issues as a big part of his character.

Thunderbolts* seems to have some decent buzz around it, but box office is a little disappointing so far.

It’s no secret that Tom Cruise goes above and beyond the call of duty to stun audiences with death-defying stunts in the Mission: Impossible franchise. Cruise seems to cheat death every time Ethan Hunt returns to screens. In the latest featurette for Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning from Paramount Pictures, we see other cast members and crew pushing themselves to the limit. As we’ve seen in promotional materials for Mission: Impossible 8, the over-the-top action sequel features a harrowing underwater sequence that laughs in the face of danger. Today, we learn how Cruise and his fellow filmmakers communicated while navigating the watery depths to shoot an unforgettable display of dedication to the art of acting.

“Everything we’re doing is underwater. We all know it’s a dangerous environment. We’ve developed hand signals underwater for talking to understand the depth of the frame or “do it again,” Cruise says about the elaborate filming process in today’s Mission: Impossible featurette. “All of these things, there’s a lot of stuff happening.”

Today’s footage shows Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning director Christopher McQuarrie displaying various hand signals used on the set, including signs for “Cut,” “Rolling,” “Close up,” “Longer,” “I’m resting,” and more. McQuarrie says the hand signals make filming the complicated sequence much more efficient. When shooting underwater, everything feels more dangerous and unpredictable.

Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning tells the second half of the story that began in Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning, with Ethan Hunt out to destroy an AI system called The Entity, which is housed in a sunken Russian stealth submarine. Mission: Impossible – Rogue NationMission: Impossible – Fallout, and Dead Reckoning writer/director Christopher McQuarrie remains at the helm, working from a screenplay he crafted with Erik Jendresen. The official synopsis is very simple: Our lives are the sum of our choices. Tom Cruise is Ethan Hunt in Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning.

Cruise is being joined in the cast by Hayley Atwell, reprising her Dead Reckoning role of thief-turned-IMF-recruit Grace; Ving Rhames as IMF agent Luther Stickell, who has been part of this franchise since the first Mission: Impossible movie in 1996; Simon Pegg as IMF agent Benji Dunn, who joined the party back in Mission: Impossible III; Henry Czerny as CIA director Eugene Kittridge, who was introduced in Mission: Impossible (1996) and finally made his long-awaited return in Dead Reckoning; Rolf Saxon as William Donloe, a CIA analyst who got in trouble after Ethan Hunt accessed his computer way back in the first Mission: Impossible; and more Dead Reckoning reprisals: Esai Morales as the Entity-serving terrorist Gabriel; Pom Klementieff as Gabriel’s former ally Paris; Shea Whigham and Greg Tarzan Davis as US Intelligence agents Briggs and Degas; Mark Gatiss and Charles Parnell as the heads of the NSA and NRO;. There are also a handful of new additions to the franchise: Holt McCallany as Secretary of Defense Bernstein; Nick Offerman as Sydney, the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff; and Katy O’Brian, Stephen Oyoung, Tramell Tillman, Janet McTeer, Hannah Waddingham, and Lucy Tulugarjuk.

Would you trust Tom Cruise to take you into the murky depths to film an off-the-wall action sequence? Let us know in the comments section below.

Rina Sawayama, who received acclaim for her performance as Akira, a fan-favorite in Lionsgate’s John Wick: Chapter 4, will reprise her role opposite Donnie Yen in the upcoming Caine spinoff film. The announcement was made today by Adam Fogelson, chair, Lionsgate Motion Picture Group.

The film will be produced by franchise producers Basil Iwanyk and Erica Lee (John Wick: Chapters 1 through 4BallerinaMonkey Man) through their Thunder Road shingle, and by Chad Stahelski (John Wick: Chapter 3—Parabellum, Day Shift, John Wick: Chapter 4, Ballerina), who produces through his 87Eleven Entertainment production banner.

It was previously announced that the iconic and influential martial arts legend Donnie Yen will reprise his renowned role as Caine and will direct. The new film is stylistically modeled on the uniquely designed action films that Yen helped make famous, while being developed through Chad Stahelski’s deal with Lionsgate as he oversees the expansion of the John Wick universe. Yen will also serve as an executive producer on the project.

The film will begin production in Hong Kong later this year. The current draft of the screenplay is by Mattson Tomlin (the upcoming The Batman Part II and BRZRKR), with the previous draft of the screenplay by Robert Askins. While the logline is being kept under wraps, the new film will continue the story arcs following the events of John Wick: Chapter 4, as Caine has been freed from his obligations to the High Table.

Fogelson said, John Wick: Chapter 4 introduced us to so many compelling, original characters, including Akira. We’re beyond thrilled to have Rina coming back to the franchise—Caine and Akira have unfinished business, and this next chapter in their stories will be explosive.” Iwanyk added, “Rina will be a tremendous addition to this film, and we’re excited to be returning to Caine’s corner of the John Wick Universe as we start production soon.”

“Rina is such a badass,” said Stahelski. “I love what she did with this role in Chapter 4 and can’t wait to see her cross paths with Caine once again.” Donnie Yen said, “Most delighted to welcome Rina back into this new exciting journey with us. It will be my pleasure and attempt to elevate her amazing character that left us mesmerized from John Wick: Chapter 4!”

The next film in the John Wick universe is Ballerina, which stars Ana de Armas as an assassin trained in the traditions of the Ruska Roma. The film, directed by Len Wiseman, written by Shay Hatten, based on characters created by Derek Kolstad, and produced by Basil Iwanyk, Erica Lee, Chad Stahelski, will be released on June 6.

The studio also recently announced it is working on an animated John Wick film, to be directed by Shannon Tindle and written by Vanessa Taylor, and it is in development on a fifth chapter in the John Wick story.

We love us some Scott Adkins here at JoBlo! And the unofficial successor to Jean-Claude Van Damme’s spinning kicks returns with a new action thriller from Lionsgate. Adkins reunites with Marko Zaror as the two have faced off as rivals in Undisputed III: Redemption and both appeared with Keanu Reeves in John Wick 4. Adkins and Zaror star in Diablo alongside Alanna De La Rossa, whose credits include Sound of Freedom. Diablo is helmed by Ernesto Dìaz Espinoza and he directs from a script written by Mat Sansom. Adkins is also on board as a producer of the film. Lionsgate has now released the trailer, which you can check out above.

The official synopsis of Diablo reads,
“After his release from prison, one man makes it his mission to right a terrible wrong by revealing a secret that could end his life. Scott Adkins stars as Kris Chaney, a warrior who seizes the daughter of a Colombian gangster to fulfill a noble promise to the young girl’s mother. When her father enlists both the criminal underworld and the terrifying psychotic killer El Corvo (Marko Zaror) to exact his revenge, Kris will need to draw upon everything he has ever learned — in and out of lockup — to stay alive and keep his word.”

Adkins can be seen in the upcoming RIP, which is Joe Carnahan’s (Narc) new crime thriller for Netflix. The film is set to star Matt Damon (Oppenheimer) and Ben Affleck (The Accountant 2) and follows a “team of Miami cops whose trust begins to fray when they discover millions in cash in a derelict stash house. As outside forces learn about the size of the seizure, everything for the team is called into question — including who they can rely on.“ In the movie, Adkins is set to play Affleck’s brother, which is a long-time coming since their resemblance has been referenced in The Brothers Grimsby when Adkins’ character was called a “Ukrainian Ben Affleck” and in Accident Man 2, when similar running jokes were made. The rest of the cast includes Catalina Sandino Moreno (From), Néstor Carbonell (Lost), Sasha Calle (The Flash), Teyana Taylor (A Thousand and One), and Kyle Chandler (Lanterns). In addition to directing RIP, Carnahan also wrote the script.

Tom Cruise is a machine—and machines need fuel, especially when you’re clinging to the side of a biplane for Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning. So, what keeps Hollywood’s most relentless action star running? Eggs. Lots and lots of eggs.

I actually eat a massive breakfast,” Cruise told People about preparing for the high-flying stunt. “The amount of energy it takes — I train so hard for that wing-walking. I’ll eat, like, sausage and almost a dozen eggs and bacon and toast and coffee and fluids. Oh, I’m eating! Picture: It’s cold up there. We’re at high altitude. My body is burning a lot.

I can’t imagine wanting to do anything after eating a dozen eggs, let alone dangling hundreds of feet in the air, but I’m certainly no Tom Cruise.

The sequence features Cruise hanging from and crawling along the wings of a biplane—a daring stunt he had dreamed of performing since childhood. “I remember seeing old footage of wing-walking,” Cruise said. “Those aircraft were only traveling at, I don’t know, 40, 50 miles an hour. This aircraft is up to over 120 miles an hour. Going out there, I was realizing that it takes your breath away.

Gerard Butler has had a varied career so far, with him playing everything from action leads to rom-com love interests to a singing Phantom of the Opera for Joel Schumacher. But, it has to be said that his most consistently entertaining output falls squarely into the action genre, and as far as Gerard Butler movies go, the action films will always be our favorites… so don’t expect to see The Ugly Truth on this list, but the Jennifer Aniston adventure The Bounty Hunter might scrape by. Or maybe not. Let’s see how it goes:

300 (2006)

best gerard butler movies 300

Perhaps THE film that put Gerard Butler on the map for most people, particularly the action and comic book crowds. Butler is in peak physical form here, showing off his bod as the ultimate Spartan warrior and proving that he is indeed quite the leading man. His performance here is commanding, a bit in your face (in the right way), and exactly what the film needed. Considering 300 is still well-remembered by most while its Butler-less sequel seems to have disappeared from the common consciousness says a lot about how he embodies the character of King Leonidas and how viewers connected to him in this Zack Snyder adaptation of the Frank Miller and Lynn Varley graphic novel. The film being shot basically fully on green screen with brand new, at the time, technology created a very particular look for the film and from interviews with the cast and crew, it seems it required some adaptation and readiness to embrace the unusual ways of shooting scenes. Butler’s performance here works great with all the green screen and CGI and shows a good evolution from his previous action-fantasy roles in Beowulf & Grendel, Timeline, and (Best Movie You Never Saw fave) Reign of Fire. Plus it won an MTV Movie Award for Best Fight!

Plane (2023)

Gerard Butler movies

Released right at that time of year (January) when it seems like nothing good gets to theaters, Plane was already working with the odds stacked against it. Beyond its less-than-ideal release date, the film had changed distributors a few times before finally getting released by Lionsgate. The trailer didn’t bode too well either, but it ended up getting some positive reviews that helped lead it to a $52 million box office. It’s even getting a sequel, albeit without Butler as the lead. Here, he plays an airline pilot who has fallen from grace and thus works away from his family with a home base in Asia. On this flight that starts the film, things go awry with the weather, and he is forced to land his few passengers and a felon (the great Mike Colter) being extradited to an unknown island where things go from bad to worse. Butler does quite well here, showing the public that he is still a go-to actor for action thrillers. His big fight scene near the middle of the film works well and he really gets into the character of a man who has lost almost everything but is more than willing to fight for what hs has left. Butler sells the part here and really works with the depressed lead and his issues who finds himself back in a crisis. This is a good Gerard Butler performance, one that works for his fans and for those willing to give this surprising film a chance.

Olympus Has Fallen (2013)

Gerard Butler’s Best Action Films: Olympus Has Fallen

The first in a trilogy, Olympus Has Fallen sets up high stakes by making its story about the US President and his security. Gerard Butler comes into this as a secret service agent who must rescue the President who was kidnapped after a terrorist attack. Generally speaking, this one is a bit more generic, but the work by Butler and Morgan Freeman here helps rescue this from being just another late-night cable-bound action film. There’s a bit more here of course and a lot of that “bit more” comes down to Butler’s work and the direction by Antoine Fuqua who is a pro at bringing action films and thrillers to the screen. In the case of Butler in this film, he takes a part seen so many times before, the lone protector who is the only one able to rescue the victim, and turns it into something more interesting. Between his capacities as an actor, his ease in handling action scenes, and his charisma, Butler pulls off the part of Mike Banning very well. So well in fact, that he reprised this role in both sequels London Has Fallen (2016) and Angel Has Fallen (2019). Sadly, another sequel seems unlikely, with Butler initially taking Millenium to court over unpaid profits. While the lawsuit was settled recently, I wonder if Butler will be eager to get back in bed with them anytime soon.

Gamer (2009)

best Gerard butler movies gamer

Written and directed by Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor (the Crank guys), this film is a mix of science-fiction, action, and thriller set in a bleak, near-future where gamers play using death row convicts as their avatars, pitting them against impossible odds. Butler plays Kable, a convict whose teenage player is Simon (played by Logan Lerman). Should this team-up survive thirty brutal gaming sessions, Kable will be set free. Of course, much like the recent Death Race films, it’s not going to be that easy. Gerard Butler gets to be the man who has the carrot of survival dangled in front of him, making him a man ready to do almost anything to survive. His work here is on the darker side, playing a killer ready to slay anyone in his way so that he can survive and possibly get back to his family. This leads to a part filled with action sequences, fight scenes, and violence, with a bit of background to make him more human and likable. Butler does well here with a part that could have easily been completely one-dimensional. Ludacris also steals more than a few scenes in this one.

Greenland (2020)

Greenland

With it coming fairly close on the heels of Geostorm, many assumed Greenland would terrible. It is yet another weather disaster film with a man, his estranged wife, and their kid in the middle of it all. If it sounds familiar, it’s because it’s been done a ton of times (San Andreas, any random Syfy disaster movie, etc) so it was easy to see the trailer for Greenland and think, “Yeah, no…” And honestly, the presence of Butler in this was probably the only reason some folks saw this movie at first. Thankfully, the film was made for a fairly modest budget considering the subject and how it was released in theaters (like many pandemic-era movies it went straight to streaming in North America). Its $35 million budget means that the box office for it being at $52.3 million was not a complete loss. It was a mild hit and most people who dared to see it first were part of the reason why as it built quite a bit on word of mouth. The movie, to everyone’s surprise, was good, thanks perhaps to the great director at the helm, Ric Roman Waugh (Shot Caller). At this point, more people have seen it and a sequel, Greenland: Migration, is in the works with Butler returning.

Copshop (2021)

Copshop

Released during the pandemic post-lockdown, this one was skipped by far too many people. The trailer had some panache and the fact that it’s from director Joe Carnahan, who previously did the loads-of-fun Smokin’ Aces, Narc, The Grey, and a few more films, should have made it more of an attraction for action fans. Yet Copshop only made a measly $6.9 million which basically means the public slept on this one and did not give the film its due. Gerard Butler stars opposite Frank Grillo here in a face-off set in a police station where Butler is after Grillo to kill him due to a con he pulled. This one is a lot of fun and the fact that other killers come into play makes this a dynamic movie where you never really know where it’s going exactly. Butler is having a ball here, playing a man filled with evil and a sort of almost glee about his job. His back and forth with Grillo make this the kind of film that is easy to watch while the runtime flies by.

Geostorm (2017)

Geostorm

Okay, to be fair, this is NOT a good movie. It’s pretty terrible, actually, and was marred by a never-ending series of delays and reshoots with the credited writer/ producer/ director Dean Devlin having been removed in favor of Jerry Bruckheimer and Judge Dredd director Danny Cannon. In the end, it lost somewhere in the neighborhood of $70 million for Warner Bros and resulted in Butler laying off the big PG-13 four-quadrant movies in order to do more modest actioners. Yet, if you like cheesy, fun movies, it can’t be denied that Geostorm fits the bill pretty well. It’s unintentionally funny (take a shot everyone says “Dutch boy”), but it’s curiously rewatchable.

So there you go, a bunch of suggestions that you can use to assemble your own Gerard Butler film festival.

Subversion: Chris Hemsworth to star in “Die Hard on a submarine” thriller for Amazon https://www.joblo.com/subversion-chris-hemsworth/ https://www.joblo.com/subversion-chris-hemsworth/#respond Wed, 30 Apr 2025 21:50:04 +0000 https://www.joblo.com/?p=838677 Chris Hemsworth is headed to the bottle of the sea for Subversion, a new thriller described as "Die Hard on a submarine" for Amazon MGM.

THR reports that Chris Hemsworth is set to star in Subversion for Amazon MGM Studios. Directed by Patrick Vollrath from a script by Andrew Ferguson, the project has been described as a “Die Hard on a submarine” style thriller. Personally, I’m still waiting for “Die Hard on an ice cream truck.”

Hemsworth will star as a “once-promising Naval commander who is blackmailed by a cartel-like operation into piloting a dangerous submarine carrying illegal cargo across international waters. Thrust into a high-stakes game of cat and mouse, the man must outmaneuver blockades and navigate perilous threats both in and outside of the submarine.” Lorenzo di Bonaventura is set to produce through his di Bonaventura Pictures banner, with production looking to kick off in Australia this fall.

Hemsworth’s next project will see him reprising the role of Thor for Avengers: Doomsday. The highly anticipated Marvel project is now in production and boasts quite the cast. In addition to Hemsworth, the officially announced cast of Avengers: Doomsday includes Anthony Mackie as Sam Wilson, Vanessa Kirby as Sue Storm, Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes, Letitia Wright as Shuri, Paul Rudd as Scott Lang, Wyatt Russell as John Walker, Tenoch Huerta Mejía as Namor, Ebon Moss-Bachrach as Ben Grimm, Simi Liu as Shang-Chi, Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova, Kelsey Grammer as Hank McCoy, Lewis Pullman as Bob, Danny Ramirez as Joaquin Torres, Joseph Quinn as Johnny Storm, David Harbour as Red Guardian, Winston Duke as M’Baku, Hannah John-Kamen as Ghost, Tom Hiddleston as Loki, Patrick Stewart as Charles Xavier, Ian McKellen as Erik Lehnsherr, Alan Cumming as Kurt Wagner, Rebecca Romijn as Raven Darkhölme, James Marsden as Scott Summers, Channing Tatum as Remy LeBeau, Pedro Pascal as Reed Richards, and Robert Downey Jr. as Victor von Doom.

That’s just the tip of the iceberg, as more names are expected to be announced. Avengers: Doomsday will be released on May 1, 2026, followed by Avengers: Secret Wars on May 7, 2027.

He also stars in Crime 101, a thriller based on Don Winslow’s novella of the same name. The cast includes Mark Ruffalo, Barry Keoghan, and Halle Berry. Amazon MGM is slated to release it next year.

What’s your favourite submarine-based movie?

Get ready to put up your dukes and down some shots because Guy Ritchie is officially signed on the dotted line to direct Road House 2 at Amazon MGM Studios. The sequel finds Jake Gyllenhaal reprising his role as Dalton, an ex-UFC fighter who becomes a bouncer at a Florida Keys roadhouse, only to discover all is not as it seems.

Guy Ritchie directs Road House 2 from a script by Will Beal, whose writing credits include the screenplays for DC’s Aquaman and Bad Boys: Ride or Die. Gyllenhaal will produce Road House 2 with Josh McLaughlin through their Nine Stories Productions studio with Charles Roven and Alex Gartner of Atlas Entertainment. Plot details remain a mystery.

In addition to Gyllenhaal, Road House stars Daniela Melchior, Billy Magnussen, Jessica Williams, Joaquim De Almeida, and Conor McGregor. The film pays homage to the 1989 original starring Patrick Swayze while providing its own unique and exhilarating spin to re-introduce Dalton, the roadhouse, and all its chaos to a new generation.

Doug Liman directed last year’s Road House but is unlikely to be a part of the sequel after coming to blows with Amazon about the film’s lack of a proper theatrical release. Liman was quite vocal about his discontent with the studio leading up to the film’s release on Prime Video, telling IndieWire that he and other players got screwed out of proper financial compensation for the film.

“My issue on Road House is that we made the movie for MGM to be in theaters, everyone was paid as if it was going to be in theaters, and then Amazon switched it on us and nobody got compensated,” Liman told the outlet. “Forget about the effect on the industry — 50 million people saw Road House — I didn’t get a cent, Jake Gyllenhaal didn’t get a cent, [producer] Joel Silver didn’t get a cent. That’s wrong.”

Regardless of the fallout from last year’s remake, Road House 2 is punching forward with Guy Ritchie at the helm. We’re eager to learn more about the sequel and will report the details when we know more.

Thunderbolts* will kick off the summer box office with a projected $175 million opening https://www.joblo.com/thunderbolts-box-office-projections/ https://www.joblo.com/thunderbolts-box-office-projections/#respond Tue, 29 Apr 2025 22:20:38 +0000 https://www.joblo.com/?p=838438 Thunderbolts* will officially hit theaters this Friday, and early box office projections say it will have a $175 million global opening.

The post Thunderbolts* will kick off the summer box office with a projected $175 million opening appeared first on JoBlo.

]]>
Marvel Studios’ Thunderbolts* will hit theaters this Friday, with early tracking predicting a $175 million global opening to launch the summer box office. That places it slightly behind Captain America: Brave New World, which debuted with just over $192 million worldwide. However, Thunderbolts is earning significantly stronger reviews, and positive word of mouth could give it staying power in the weeks ahead.

Thunderbolts* is projected to draw between $70-$75 million domestically and another $90-$100 million internationally. The film follows Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh), Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan), Red Guardian (David Harbour), John Walker (Wyatt Russell), Ghost (Hannah John-Kamen), and Taskmaster (Olga Kurylenko) as they are forced to unite on a dangerous mission. Lewis Pullman plays Bob, a superpowered individual also known as The Sentry. Julia Louis-Dreyfus also returns as Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, who seems to be pulling the strings behind the scenes.

Although an opening of $175 million is pretty damn good, it’s not exactly reaching the levels of Marvel’s glory days. The franchise has been struggling lately, with only Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and Deadpool & Wolverine standing out as clear box office successes in Phase Five. Still, the future looks brighter, with The Fantastic Four: First Steps generating real excitement and the Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars teasing that they may recapture some of that Infinity War/Endgame magic.

Our own Chris Bumbray enjoyed Thunderbolts*, finding it a “significant step-up” from Captain America: Brave New World. However, he cautioned that it’s not the “game-changer” that some of the early reactions suggested. “With Marvel movies, the first wave of reviews almost always fall prey to too much hype,” Bumbray wrote. “Even still, I had a better time with Thunderbolts than any other Marvel movie (outside of Deadpool & Wolverine), in recent memory (I’d wager Guardians 3 was the last great one). Granted, the bar hasn’t been too high recently, but this is very decent and hopefully moves the franchise back in the right direction, where we actually can start investing in new characters and having favourites again.” You can check out the rest of his review right here.

Havoc tops Netflix’s streaming charts with a better debut than The Electric State https://www.joblo.com/havoc-netflix-top-ten/ https://www.joblo.com/havoc-netflix-top-ten/#respond Tue, 29 Apr 2025 19:44:40 +0000 https://www.joblo.com/?p=838412 Tom Hardy's action-thriller Havoc has topped the streaming charts at Netflix, with more views than some higher-budget products.

The post Havoc tops Netflix’s streaming charts with a better debut than The Electric State appeared first on JoBlo.

Gareth Evans’ HAVOC has been a long time coming, but the wait has been well worth it. The hard-hitting action thriller has topped Netflix’s streaming charts with 29.8 million views. This makes the film the most-watched title of the week (by a long shot, I might add), but it has also beaten some of Netflix’s more high-profile recent releases, including The Electric State.

The Electric State was a highly anticipated sci-fi adventure movie from the Russo brothers starring Millie Bobby Brown and Chris Pratt. With a budget of $320 million, it was also one of the most expensive movies ever made. However, although the film debuted at Netflix’s #1 spot, it did so with just 25.2 million views. As HAVOC was produced for a fraction of the budget of The Electric State, it’s certainly a lot more bang for the buck. Other recent action flicks also performed better in their debuts, including Carry On with 42 million views and Back in Action with 46.2 million views.

Tom Hardy stars in HAVOC as Walker, a “bruised detective fighting his way through the criminal underworld threatening to engulf his entire city. In the aftermath of a drug deal gone wrong, Walker finds himself with a number of factions on his tail; a vengeful crime syndicate, a crooked politician, as well as his fellow cops. When attempting to rescue the politician’s estranged son, whose involvement in the drug deal starts to unravel a deep web of corruption and conspiracy, he is forced to confront the demons of his past.” In addition to Hardy, HAVOC stars Jessie Mei Li, Justin Cornwell, Quelin Sepulveda, Luis Guzmán, Michelle Waterson, Sunny Pang, Jim Caesar, Xelia Mendes-Jones, with Yeo Yann Yann, Timothy Olyphant, and Forest Whitaker.

Our own Chris Bumbray didn’t think the film was perfect, but he did have a great time with it. “While easily as violent as The Raid or its sequel, Havoc embraces a different style of action, with it being Evans’s homage to the heroic bloodshed genre,” Bumbray wrote. “For those not in the know, this is the genre of action engineered by directors like John Woo and Ringo Lam during their 80s Hong Kong hey-day. Like in those films, the bullets fly constantly, with our heroes simply wincing anytime they take a bullet, as in this world it takes AT LEAST half a dozen wounds to take anyone down. Not since the days of Chow Yun-Fat and John Woo has there been as trigger happy an action flick, and it’s stunningly accomplished for fans of the genre.” You can check out the rest of his review right here.
