John Wick gave action lovers something to rejoice in, and it all started with the perfectly cast Keanu Reeves. But the incredible stuntwork is one of the things that truly set it apart. You could tell that they had something special. And with the mythology behind Wick continuing to grow, and with Ballerina, I’m happy to say that their latest looks like they are continuing to create movie magic.

Back in March, I was given an assignment. JoBlo was invited to take part in the Ballerina 87eleven Stunt Day. I also chatted with the film’s director, Len Wiseman. While that was a few months back, I remember it like yesterday. When we arrived, the journalists and influencers gathered in groups, ready for action. Before the work began, we witnessed a kick ass scene featuring the lovely Ana de Armas. It involved the heroine taking on a bunch of baddies. She put ice skates to great use, and so did we.

After our introduction to the world of Ballerina, we gathered together for a training session with Fight Coordinator Jeremy Marinas. I love the 87eleven team, and Mr. Marinas proved how terrific they are. He showed us the moves, and then we got to work. We were in wonderful hands with an impressive stunt crew helping us out. And yes, I was itching to get up there and work. Having had experience with the amazing 87eleven team, I jumped at the chance to go!

Check out some picks from my stunt training:

I adore the John Wick franchise, and this flick has me thrilled, especially after this particular experience. The new feature offers an incredible cast that includes Ms. Armas, Keanu Reeves, Ian McShane, Anjelica Huston, Gabriel Byrne, Norman Reedus, and a farewell performance from the wonderful Lance Reddick; I’m looking forward to continuing into the wonderful world of Mr. Wick and those around him.

From the World of John Wick: Ballerina opens June 6th at a theatre near you.

With Thunderbolts* currently bringing MCU back in a big way (though on the smaller end), Marvel is getting ready to release their prior film on Physical Media and digital. The narrative around Captain America: Brave New World‘s reshoots has been the topic of discussion for years at this point. Was it a complete disaster that Marvel had to take over? Or was it standard practice that most of these big budget films go through? We were recently given the opportunity to get into it all, as we sat down with the director. You can check it out in the embedded video above!

I was lucky enough to talk to director Julius Onah in support of the film’s Physical/Digital release. Julius was very open about how much the reshoots on the film were blown out of proportion and how he tried to not let the media narrative get to him. Though I made sure to express my disappointment in losing Rosa Salazar as Diamondback. With Marvel being what Marvel is, they could easily bring back the Serpent Society (which was cut from the final film) so chances of us seeing that footage feels rather slim at this point.

Captain America: Brave New World Bonus Features:

 • Deleted Scenes:
 • A Heartfelt Thanks – President Ross praises Agent Taylor for her actions.
 • The Mission – Sam Wilson tries to extract information out of Agent Taylor in the boxing ring.
 • Stick Around – President Ross extends an apology and an unexpected invitation to Isaiah.
 • Assuming the Mantle – Ever since his high-flying debut in “Captain America: The Winter Soldier,” audiences around the world have known that Sam Wilson was destined for great things. Join the cast and crew as they look at Sam’s past, present, and potential future in the MCU.
 • Old Scores, New Scars – Brave New World finds Captain America locked in a battle of brains and brawn in the forms of The Leader, Red Hulk, and Sidewinder. From prosthetics to visual effects to stunt work, get the lowdown on these formidable foes and how they’re brought to life.
 • Gag Reel – Enjoy some hilarious outtakes on set with the cast and crew of Captain America: Brave New World.
 • Audio Commentary – Listen to Director Julius Onah and Director of Photography Kramer Morgenthau talk about the film

CAPTAIN AMERICA BRAVE NEW WORLD is available on 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, and DVD on May 13th, 2025.

It’s been fourteen years, but the Final Destination franchise is all set to make a triumphant return to the big screen this weekend with Final Destination: Bloodlines. The sixth film in the series, it stars Kaitlyn Santa Juana as a college student who inherits a family curse where they’re able to have premonitions about deaths before they happen. The difference in this one is that the death curse starts taking the descendants of survivors of a curse that happened decades before, giving the film a new twist on the old formula.

Final Destination: Bloodlines is directed by Zach Lipovsky and Adam Stein, whose indie film, Freaks, became an unlikely smash hit on Netflix during the pandemic. Working with a studio budget, they’ve made what many are calling the franchise’s best instalment ever, with plenty of gory deaths we can add to our “best kills list” which we ran yesterday.

Today on JoBlo, our very own Jimmy O sat down with the cast including Rya Kihlstedt, Kaitlyn Santa Juana, Teo Briones as well as Richard Harmon, Anna Lore, and Owen Patrick Joyner as they talk about working together on the film and be sure to stick around as we also chatted with directors Zach Lipovsky and Adam Stein!

Final Destination: Bloodlines opens in theaters on Friday. Make sure to check back for our review soon!

Going from Brandon Lee’s double on The Crow to helming one of the greatest action franchises of the modern era, Chad Stahelski has been on quite the journey. What’s he’s done with the John Wick franchise is absurdly impressive, especially from someone making his directorial debut. So it feels appropriate that there would be extensive documentary made, cataloguing the origins and legacy of the franchise. Some may say it’s a bit soon for Wick is Pain (especially given that franchise isn’t over yet) but sometimes you have to strike while the iron is hot. My review should be out shortly and I absolutely loved it.

I was able to sit down with Chad and producer Josh Oreck about the new documentary, Wick is Pain. Chad’s candor can not be understated as he gets into his working relationship with David Leitch and putting so much of his personal life into this doc. And Josh, having produced the behind the scenes featurettes on the first three films through his company Narrator, has some great insight into how these style of docs come together. If you’re a fan of John Wick, this is a doc and interview that you don’t want to miss.

WICK IS PAIN plot:

WICK IS PAIN is the incredible true story behind the John Wick franchise, starring Keanu Reeves. In never-before-seen footage captured over a decade on and off set, the film chronicles John Wick’s journey from independent film—facing a mountain of creative, financial, and personal challenges—into a global phenomenon that redefined the action genre and launched three megahit sequels. Join Keanu Reeves, director Chad Stahelski, and the extended Wick cast and crew as they go behind the scenes of this billion-dollar franchise that almost never happened.

WICK IS PAIN IS AVAILABLE ON DIGITAL ON MAY 9TH, 2025.

I’m not sure if it can be considered a subgenre, but I love an airplane movie. Trapping your characters 30,000 feet in the air inherently brings so much tension as there’s no escape. At least not one that won’t result in a sticky landing. But they also have to contend with the minimal space and basic air travel rules (don’t shoot the fuselage!), so it can be quite confining. That’s why I prefer my plane movies to go the over-the-top route, going more for fun versus realism. And, as you can tell by my review for Fight or Flight, this was my kind of film.

I sat down with the cast and director of Fight or Flight to discuss their action film, and it was a delight. Despite us not seeing it in the film, Josh Hartnett gets into how much of his character’s background he worked out. Katee Sackhoff (who I’m sure to get in some Battlestar Galactica praise) explains why her character is so much more interesting than these types usually are. Charithra Chandran tells us the moment in the script that got her to sign on (it may or may not have been one of the film’s big twists). Director James Madigan talks about the unbroken action and how it was only possible because Hartnett took the fight choreography so well. Like the film, this was an energetic interview you don’t want to miss!

Fight or Flight plot:

Exiled American agent Lucas Reyes (Josh Hartnett) is given one last chance to redeem himself – the assignment is to track down and identify a mysterious, international high-value asset known only as The Ghost on a flight from Bangkok to San Francisco. Complicating matters, the plane is filled with assassins from around the world who are assigned to kill them both. The pair must work together in a fight for their lives. At 37,000 feet, the stakes have never been higher.

FIGHT OR FLIGHT IS PLAYING IN THEATERS ON MAY 9TH, 2025.

Bareback bronc riding is one of the most dangerous and physically crippling sports ever conceived. It takes a special kind of person to put themselves in harm’s way as unpredictable beasts leap, kick, and trample around an arena, their only goal being to shed foreign weight from their massive bodies. In Carlyle Eubank’s Broke, True Brandywine (Wyatt Russell), he is a bareback bronc rider pushed beyond his limits as his eroding career, failing health, and shattered relationships haunt his quest to survive a battle with the elements.

Leading up to the release of Broke, we sat down with Wyatt Russell (who’s currently lighting up the screen as U.S. Agent in Thunderbolts) and Dennis Quaid (George Brandywine, True’s father) to discuss Eubank’s emotional film and all the mental gymnastics required to help make it. During our talk, we talked about the harsh weather conditions Russell endured while shooting a portion of the film, if and how Dennis Quaid cools down after a heated exchange with his Broke co-star, and the duo’s heightened level of respect for real-deal bareback bronc riders.

Broke is a contemporary western following the story of True Brandywine (Wyatt Russell), a bareback bronc rider clinging to his fading rodeo career. When True gets trapped in a freak spring blizzard, he must battle injuries, illness, and the bitter cold. While fighting for his survival, True is forced to face his choices and the circumstances that led him to his tenuous situation. Joining Wyatt Russell and Dennis Quaid are Auden Thornton, Mary McDonnell, and Johnny Berchtold as primary cast members.

Broke hits all digital platforms on May 6, 2025.

One thing I love about my job here at JoBlo is I’m constantly exposed to films that I may have otherwise passed over. And with a very generic poster (which you can see below), it would have been easy to have Unit 234 pass me by. But I’m here to tell you to not make that mistake, as the film is actually a pretty fun little thriller. Check out my review HERE!

I spoke with star Isabelle Fuhrman (of the Orphan franchise) and director Andy Tennant about their time on Unit 234. One thing that became very evident is that they really didn’t have a lot of time to make this film, making it all the more impressive what they were able to accomplish.

Here’s the official description for UNIT 234: After the shocking discovery of an unconscious man in a locked unit, the lone employee of a remote storage facility must fight to survive the night against a ruthless gang, dead set on retrieving their precious cargo – at any cost.

Unit 234 was fully financed by Productivity Media. The film was produced by Blythe Frank, Hadeel Reda, and Lee Dreyfus, along with Productivity Media’s William G. Santor and Doug Murray. Johnson serves as executive producer alongside Colleen Camp.

UNIT 234 IS AVAILABLE ON DEMAND/DIGITAL ON MAY 9TH, 2025.

The post The Surfer: We Interview the legendary Nicolas Cage about his surreal new flick appeared first on JoBlo.

In this business, legends don’t come much bigger than the great Nicolas Cage. Recently, I had the chance to see his latest movie, The Surfer, at a pretty raucous screening at SXSW. You can read my review HERE, but I enjoyed this surreal tribute to seventies Ozzploitation flicks. In it, Cage plays a harried businessman trying to reconnect with his Australian roots, only to run afoul of a local surf gang, run by a magnetic, macho guru (Nip/Tuck’s Julian McMahon in an excellent performance), who launches a campaign against him that challenges his sanity.

Suffice to say, I was pumped when I received an invitation to speak to Cage recently. I’ve interviewed Cage a few times before, and always found him to be an upbeat, friendly guy – and this time was no exception. You can really see in our chat (embedded above) that Cage cares about the film, and is proud of his performance. In our interview, we dig into Cage’s major influence (Burt Lancaster’s performance in The Swimmer) and his take on the movie’s larger themes.

We also chatted with the director, Lorcan Finnegan, who explains how much the late Ted Kotcheff’s Wake in Fright inspired his film, and why he was eager to cast McMahon totally against type in a role that’s hard to pigeonhole.

The Surfer is now playing and is worth catching on the big screen, with it gorgeously shot. If you’re a fan of Nic Cage – and who isn’t – you should see it.

Paul Feig has made a lot of successful movies, but until now, he’s never made a sequel. While there were no doubt potential sequels in the works for his ultra-successful comedies like Bridesmaids, The Heat, and Spy, for one reason or another, they never happened. However, that all changes this week when Another Simple Favor, the sequel to his hit comedic thriller, A Simple Favor, which hits Prime Video today.

In it, Anna Kendrick and Blake Lively return as friendly enemies, Stephanie Smothers and Emily Nelson, who finds themselves embroiled in yet another murder mystery while attending the latter’s destination wedding in Capri. I caught the movie at SXSW (read my review HERE) and enjoyed it. Thus, I was happy to sit down with Paul Feig, who, as always, was immaculately attired (he’s known as the most stylishly dressed director in Hollywood). In our chat, we talked about why he opted to make this his first sequel, the difference between shooting for the big screen vs streaming, Henry Golding’s against-type casting, and the public’s ongoing fascination with Blake Lively. He also talks about whether or not this could turn into a franchise, which seems like a distinct possibility.

A24‘s Warfare is one of the best movies of the year, and not enough people have seen it. You can check out our review HERE, and a few weeks ago, we chatted with some of the actors who make Warfare so memorable (which you can see embedded below). D’Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai, Will Poulter, and Charles Melton discussed working on such a challenging project. And now, we talk with the guys who made it feel so very real. Fresh off of Garland’s Civil War, the filmmaker presents one of the most effective war films I’ve ever witnessed. While Garland continues to impress visually, co-director and former Navy SEAL, Mendoza, brings a stark reality to the intense nature of the movie.

Warfare is like no other war film you’ve ever seen. It is immersive, literally putting the audience inside a frightening—and very real—situation. It’s a fantastic feature, and it was incredible meeting all of those involved. While it was terrific hearing Garland’s take, you can tell that the two of these filmmakers working together added an extra set of reality to this impressive feature.

Warfare is currently in theatres. It’s a powerhouse of a film. Here’s the official synopsis: Written and Directed by Iraq War veteran Ray Mendoza and Alex Garland (Civil War, 28 Days Later), Warfare embeds audiences with a platoon of American Navy SEALs in the home of an Iraqi family, overwatching the movement of US forces through insurgent territory. A visceral, boots-on-the-ground story of modern warfare, told like never before: in real time and based on the memory of the people who lived it.

The post The Ugly Stepsister: we chat with the director and stars of this body horror take on Cinderella appeared first on JoBlo.

]]>

I was absolutely floored by The Ugly Stepsister when I caught it at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year. When I heard it was a subversive take on Cinderella, I groaned, as this was at the height of Snow White’s terrible press run, and I didn’t really need to see yet another fairy tale told over again – especially as there was a pretty solid retelling done back in the nineties with Drew Barrymore, Ever After, which doesn’t get much love. Suffice to say, I had no clue what I was getting into, with this a gory, body horror version that puts the Grimm back into this Brothers Grimm story. It’s the darkest fairy tale movie I’ve seen since The Company of Wolves or Snow White: A Tale of Terror

Taking the perspective of one of the “ugly stepsisters”, director Emilie Blichfeldt has made a gruesome, darkly humorous take on the genre that will no doubt earn her a lot of fans. It’s currently playing in theatres, and is due for a Shudder release relatively soon, and to mark the occasion, we were invited to sit down with the director and her two stars, Lea Myren and Thea Sofie Loch Naess. What follows is an interesting chat, where Blichfeldt goes into her many influences, including what influenced the film’s synth-style score (which is evocative of classic Tangerine Dream), and how she wanted to rock people with the gore. The stars also draw an interesting parallel to the film’s universality, with Myren citing the recent Netflix series, Adolescence, as evidence of that, lest male viewers not think the film will resonate for them too. It’s a fun interview, and I really hope people get out and see this movie. Blichfeldt is a rising star and will undoubtedly become a big name in horror.

From A24 and writer/director Isaiah Saxon, the fantasy adventure film The Legend of Ochi is now playing in theatres (you can read our review at THIS LINK) and today on JoBlo Celebrity Access, our very own Eric Walkuski had the chance to sit down for an interview with stars Finn Wolfhard and Helena Zengel, during which they talked about working with all the creatures and props and much more! You can watch the interviews in the video embedded above – and be sure to stick around for the duration, as we also chatted with cast member Emily Watson and Isaiah Saxon!

The Legend of Ochi has the following official synopsis: In a remote northern village, a young girl, Yuri, is raised to never go outside after dark and to fear the reclusive forest creatures known as the ochi. When a baby ochi is left behind by its pack, she embarks on the adventure of a lifetime to reunite it with its family. Helena Zengel plays Yuri and is joined in the cast by Willem Dafoe as Maxim, Finn Wolfhard as Petro, and Emily Watson as Dasha.

Saxon, a frequent collaborator on music videos with Icelandic songstress Björk, made his feature debut with The Legend of Ochi. Saxon and Encyclopedia Pictura produced the film with Traci Carlson and Richard Peete for Neighborhood Watch and Jonathan Wang with Year of the Rat. The Russo Brothers, Mike Larocca, and Angela Russo-Otstot of AGBO served as executive producers with Louise Lovegrove and Alex Plapinger. A24 handled the financing and distribution. Made on a budget of $10 million, the movie was filmed in Romania. The titular creature was brought to life through puppetry and was operated by 7 performers.

Our reviewer described the film as “perfectly pleasant family entertainment that’s easy on the eyes and even easier to digest” and “a sweet-natured and predominantly upbeat tale with an impossible-to-dislike friendship at its center.”

+This past holiday weekend brought families together for Easter celebrations. I’m willing to bet that more than a few of you participated in the joys of 420 as well. What is the perfect movie to watch this week? That would be Cheech & Chong’s Last Movie. The new documentary tells the incredible tale of these two longtime friends and the history of the stoner characters that made them iconic. It’s a wonderful film, directed by David Bushell, one that manages to bring depth to its story. And yes, it’s also incredibly funny. Growing up on late-night viewings of Cheech & Chong movies, this was a great reminder of why they still stand out.

We recently had the pleasure of speaking with the film’s director and the legends themselves. First, we spoke with Mr. David Bushell. The filmmaker talked about taking on this project and working so closely with the guys. He discussed his approach to bringing out what made Cheech and Chong so beloved amongst fans.

Now, walking into a room with Cheech and Chong was a trip! In the midst of a conversation between the two, I was led into the studio. When I sat down, I listened to a story Tommy Chong was telling Cheech Marin. From there, we just started chatting, and it was fantastic. Having interviewed Mr. Marin before, talking to him and his comedic partner was a thrill. The two just opened up about their history and coming together for this personal and humorous—and even heartbreaking—true-life examination. I’ve covered a ton of interviews, many of which stand out. And yes, this one felt really special talking to these amazing guys.

Cheech & Chong’s Last Movie opens Friday! Why not check it out and give yourself a 420 extended holiday this coming weekend?

It’s hard to make a movie about gay relationships and not just be dismissed as a “gay movie” even when you’re trying to make a broader point. The makers of On Swift Horses clearly knew this, as their promotion seemed to imply that stars Daisy Edgar-Jones and Jacob Elordi were having a love affair in the film. Not a surprise given that these are the top names in the movie, but certainly an odd choice given that’s not at all what their dynamic in the film is. If anything it just highlights the forever complicated task of promoting a film in this day and age. Always trying to avoid cutting off a potential money source. You can check out Alex Maidy’s review HERE but I can’t imagine this approach results in box office gold.

It’s always tough when you have less than four minutes with a group for an interview, but thankfully they were very kind with their time. Daisy Edgar-Jones proved why she’s so personable, telling us about the Spotify playlist that her and Sasha Calle shared. Director Daniel Minahan talks his favorite scene from the film and why it was so challenging to shoot. And since I absolutely love simple tasks that logistically take forever to film, Daisy humors me by getting into the challenge behind tossing a cigarette out of a window and having perfect aim. You just have to see it for yourself; it’s very impressive. This was a wonderful talk so make sure to check it out in the embedded video above.

The Accountant was an unexpected treat for action fans. It ended up being a quirky hit flick featuring terrific work from Ben Affleck and the cast, including Jon Bernthal. And now we have a sequel. Thankfully, filmmaker Gavin O’Connor managed to make a part two that is absolutely satisfying and fun and gives more on-screen time to the great pairing of Ben and Jon. It also offers the return of Cynthia Addai-Robinson, as well as new cast members, including Daniella Pineda. It’s a sharp sequel that manages to be engaging as a thriller and buddy flick. You can check out Chris Bumbray’s take on this fine sequel here.

A month ago, I sat down with some of the stars and the filmmaker behind The Accountant 2. Talking to Jon Bernthal is always amazing. For Mr. Bernthal, I sat down across from both him and Mr. O’Connor. Before beginning the chat, I had to give Gavin a little Warrior love, which is one of my personal favorites. And then the conversation began. The two talked about creating a worthy sequel. More importantly, there is fantastic on-screen chemistry between Jon and Ben.

Next, I spoke with Cynthia Addai-Robinson and Daniella Pineda. The two were incredibly charming, and they spoke about working with this cast and filmmaker. What impressed this viewer was that these two roles felt just as important to the story as the leads. Seeing more depth in an action flick such as this was nice.

The Accountant 2 is a terrific sequel, one that builds on the first incredibly well. Check it out this weekend at a theatre near you.

In the latest animated tale from the directing team of Rob Edwards and Christopher Jenkins, a familiar yet fun world is revealed. The all-star Sneaks features the vocal talents of Anthony Mackie, Laurence Fishburne, Keith David, Macy Gray, Martin Lawrence, Rico Rodriguez, and many more. It tells the story of two designer sneakers that get separated after a creepy collector (Fishburne) steals them from a young man who won them. It’s a sweet and humorous look at friendship, separation, and sneakers.

We recently spoke to several of the cast members, and it was quite the treat. First up, I spoke with Anthony Mackie, and he really is one of the nicest guys around. He opened up about his first pair of sneakers. As well as taking a break from superheroes for this animated adventure. After that, I spoke with Rico Rodriquez, who took a liking to my Funko Pops collection. He opened up about working on Modern Family, and taking the next steps with his career.

Later that afternoon, I sat down with a few legends. First up was the iconic Martin Lawrence. Speaking to Mr. Lawrence was a treat as he discussed taking on the character of a sneaker. Considering the man has such an impressive career, I asked him which character he’d like to revisit from his past. And finally, I spoke with the incredible Keith David and Macy Gray. Keith discussed working with the filmmakers, while Macy talked about having a balance between a film and music career.

Sneaks is a charmer, and it opens this Friday.

The post Interview: Titus Welliver talks about the latest season of Bosch: Legacy and what could come next appeared first on JoBlo.

If you know what Bosch is, odds are you are a red-blooded American dad or a fan of police procedurals. For those unfamiliar, Bosch was a long-running Prime Video series adapted from the novels of Michael Connelly. Following Detective Hieronymus “Harry” Bosch, played by Titus Welliver, the series follows the LAPD detective as he solves murders, mysteries, and more while balancing his personal life with the safety of the public he serves. Running for seven seasons, the original Bosch ended its run in 2021 before coming back the following season as Bosch: Legacy.

Now in its third season, Bosch: Legacy follows Harry Bosch after he retires from the LAPD. Now operating as a private investigator, Bosch has found himself embroiled in crimes where he has been the suspect. He also has partnered with defense attorney Honey “Money” Chandler (Mimi Rogers) and his daughter Madeline (Madison Lintz), who is an LAPD officer. In the latest season, Bosch has had the highest stakes of his career involving an election and more for what many have found to be the best run of the series to date.

I talked with series star Titus Welliver about his role as Harry Bosch and what it has meant to him. A veteran of series like Lost and Deadwood, this is the longest role of Welliver’s career. He talked about his love of the source material and where he sees the series going in the future. We also talked about the label that Bosch is a “dad show” and what his favorite part of working on the series has been. Check out the full interview in the embed above.

Bosch: Legacy is now streaming on Prime Video.

One of the interesting things about getting older as a movie fan is that – at some point – you realize that folks you once considered young up-and-comers suddenly aren’t so young many more. Granted, Michael Angarano is only five years younger than me, but for some reason, when I think of him, I immediately picture him as the likeable teen star of Sky High – an underrated Disney superhero flick from the 2000s. Of course, he’s been around for twenty years since then and has never stopped churning out good work, with him especially good on Steven Soderbergh’s The Knick, and the short-lived Showtime drama, I’m Dying Up Here.

Last weekend, Angarano released his feature directorial debut, Sacramento, which he also wrote and stars in. In it, he plays a young man coming to terms with the fact that his perpetual, everlasting adolescence is coming to an inevitable end. He goes on a road trip with his best pal, played by Michael Cera, and both guys sat down with us recently to discuss the film. Of course, Cera and Angarano have a lot in common, with them being roughly the same age, rising to fame at the same time, and now moving into more mature roles as both men close in on forty. They discuss their dynamic in the film, which we really enjoyed, and co-stars the great Kristen Stewart and Maya Erskine.

The latest action feature that proves, yet again, that Viola Davis is a damn good action star is G20. In it, she takes on the role of the President of the United States. Except she can throw down with the best of them. Directed by Patricia Riggen, you can certainly see the love the filmmaker has for the classic “Christmas” flick Die Hard. Instead of an off-duty officer, we have the POTUS, who is willing to do anything to keep her family safe – as well as everybody else. It’s a fun flick, one that manages to bring a whole lot of baddies to the surface after a terrorist organization takes over the G20 summit. The film also stars Anthony Anderson, Christopher Farrar, and Marsai Martin as the First Family. If you are looking for a little escape, check out Viola kicking butt this weekend.

Recently, we spoke with Patricia Riggen, the film’s director. And yes, she wears her adoration for Die Hard on her sleeve. The filmmaker has made a loving tribute that stands on its own. She also spoke about her inspiration for taking this setting to a much larger environment. She discussed working with Ms. Davis and her impressive performance in The Woman King. We also spoke with the “First Family.” It was terrific speaking with the very talented Anthony Anderson. They chatted about working with Viola and the action involved. Anthony and the young actors, Christopher Farrar and Marsai Martin, were very nice to speak with.

G20 reached Prime Video on April 10th, and if you need a little old-fashioned butt-kicking from a tough lead, you’ll probably be in the mood for G20. Check out our review HERE.

Alex Garland offered an intriguing take on the current state of the world with the feature Civil War. Yet his latest is, for this viewer, one of his best. Co-directed by Garland and Ray Mendoza, the latter brings this terrifying experience to life. Mendoza offers his experience as a US Navy Seal to blistering heights with this ferociously intense drama. The cast includes Will Poulter, D’Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai, Joseph Quinn, Noah Centineo, Charles Melton Cosmo Jarvis, and many more. It’s an exceptional and extremely potent feature. The sound and the visuals all feel about as intense as a war film could possibly feel. With Garland’s style and Mendoza’s knowledge, Warfare is one of the most chilling war movies I’ve ever witnessed.

Recently, I sat down with cast members Will Poulter, Charles Melton, and D’Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai. I chatted with the trio of actors about basic training and how they prepared for the on-screen intensity. The three actors are part of a fantastic ensemble. It’s easy to care about every single character and the horrific struggles they face. It was impressive how each actor stood out in some way. And much of that credit can go to the directing team of Garland and Mendoza. In fact, Mendoza’s expertise and commitment to telling an honest depiction of a real-life event were remarkable.

Warfare is now playing, and man, is it a powerful feature (check out our review) The violence is terrifying, and the silences are even more so. I loved Warfare. It’s a moviegoing experience.

Stepping into Bob Trevino Likes It, I wasn’t sure what to expect. I had not watched any trailers, but the premise looked intriguing. And frankly, this flick moved me. In the semi-autobiographical feature, Barbie Ferreira portrays Lily Trevino, a young woman with an incredibly toxic relationship with her father (an excellent performance from French Stewart). When he “blocks her” and refuses to take her calls, she desperatly searches for his Facebook account. She finds Bob Trevino. Just not the one she expected.

Recently, I sat down with the talent to talk about the new film. I was especially impressed with Tracie Laymon. The filmmaker was incredibly gracious and a joy to talk to. She opened up about the story behind the film, and how she approached bits of her life into the fictionalized account.

Sitting down with Barbie Ferreira and John Leguizamo was also quite enjoyable. The two give such impressive performances in the film. They opened up about the roles, and working with a director like Ms. Laymon. And yes, the two bring this sometimes tear inducing flick to life. It was a real pleasure chatting with the three of these fine talents. Check out Bob Trevino Likes It. It’s nice to see such a sweet film get a little attention. Here’s hoping it gets discovered.

After making an acting career from it, it should come as no surprise that Michael Shannon’s directorial debut deals with challenging material. Based on the play 2002 play of the same name, Eric LaRue looks at two parents in the aftermath of their son murdering his classmates. It examines the effect that the killings have, not just on the victims, but on their families and how they’re forever changed. It’s very difficult subject matter and is going to be a tough watch for many, but it features some absolutely breathtaking performances from its cast. You can check out my review HERE.

It was kind of surreal to be in a Zoom call with the likes of Judy Greer, Michael Shannon, and Alexander Skarsgård. These three actors have made up so many of my favorite TV shows and Movies over the years that it can be a bit overwhelming to talk to them all at once. Add in the very heavy material that we’d be discussing for Eric LaRue, and it had all the makings of disaster. Thankfully, they were all so charming, were able to discuss the darker side of the film, while still bringing plenty of levity to the chat. And I was very tickled to hear who Shannon’s main directing influence was. Find out in the video above!

ERIC LARUE plot: Michael Shannon directs an adaptation of Brett Neveu’s 2002 play about a mother coping with the fallout after her son murders three of his high school classmates. Janice (Judy Greer) is struggling; she moves through life as if in a haze, unable to let go of her anger and frustration. While her husband (Alexander Skarsgård) has found refuge at a new church, Janice finds it hard to seek solace in her faith despite her pastor’s pleas to heal her wounds by meeting with the mothers of her son’s victims. As Janice ponders what that meeting could achieve for her and her community, Eric LaRue asks audiences to witness the frayed emotional ripples that violent acts can engender.

The post Interview: Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck Talk Freaky Tales appeared first on JoBlo.

The weekend sees the release of a movie we really dug when we caught it at Sundance way back in 2024. The film is Freaky Tales, which is a kaleidoscopic tribute to 80s movies. Set in Oakland in 1987, the film features a memorable collection of tales centred around the various violent encounters our heroes (and anti-heroes) have with a collection of Neo-Nazi skinheads terrorizing the city. Notably, it’s the only Sundance movie since The Raid 2 that I can remember that ends with a kung fu massacre.

It’s directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, who started their careers with lower-key Indies like Half Nelson and Mississippi Grind before directing the billion-dollar-grossing Captain Marvel. Freaky Tales plays like a mash-up of the two sensibilities, with it having the edge of an indie, but the scale and excitement of a blockbuster (as well as a particularly cool A-list cameo).

Recently, we spoke with the directing duo about their approach to the film, which counts rising superstar Pedro Pascal among its main cast members. Check it out, and if you get the chance to see Freaky Tales, give it a shot. It’s a real gem.

Here’s the Freaky Tales synopsis: An NBA star, a corrupt cop, a female rap duo, teenage punks, neo-Nazis and a debt collector embark on a collision course in 1987 Oakland, Calif.

While CinemaCon, on the whole, has been an absolute blast, one of the most memorable things to happen to me at the event was that I got to quickly interview Ana de Armas on the red carpet for The John Wick Experience, which is now open in Las Vegas. I was able to participate in this cool experience with my CinemaCon sidekick, Lance Vlcek (who’s been chronicling his own adventures at the Con on JoBlo Horror). Still, first, we were thrilled to be given time with the impossibly gorgeous de Armas, who chatted with us about her much-anticipated entry into the John Wick universe, Ballerina.

In it, she plays Eve Macarro, a ballerina assassin trained in the methods of the Ruska Roma. While on a mission of vengeance, she runs afoul of a certain Mr. Wick, with the film set between the third and fourth instalments. Based on what we saw, he seems to have been contracted to kill her. In our brief chat with de Armas, she clued us in on the style of action we should expect from Eve, which is much different from the style used by Wick, being more feral. Also, it’s important to note that de Armas and Reeves go way back to Eli Roth’s Knock Knock, with that film actually having been shot around the same time he was making John Wick, with her saying she could never have guessed it would turn into a global franchise she would one day be a part of.

Ballerina: From the World of John Wick comes out on June 6th!

If you haven’t tuned in for Guy Ritchie‘s latest television endevor, I highly recommend giving the first episode of MobLand a try. The Paramount Plus series premiered on March 30th (read our review), and the sheer star power is stunning. As are the scripts and performances. Tom Hardy, Pierce Brosnan, Joanne Froggatt, Helen Mirren, Paddy Considine, Anson Boon, and more star. It’s an impressively written series about two warring crime families, and I’m currently on episode 3. It’s marvellous stuff.

Recently, I had the opportunity to speak with some of the cast members about this terrific 9-episode series. First up, chatting with Pierce Brosnan and Anson Boon was a pleasure. The two discussed Richie’s influence on the series, and working with such an exceptionally strong group. Having spoken to Mr. Brosnan before, he worked really well with Mr. Boon. As for Anson, he is terrific as an entitled young man with an itch to scratch. I’m thrilled to see where this goes.

Next up, we spoke to Tom Hardy and Paddy Considine Mr. Hardy is easily a favorite of mine, and he is always amazing to talk to. Unfortunately, in the beginning of the interview, my internet connection was a tad spotty. Damn online access! But he and Paddy were incredibly kind and gracious, and answered my questions. And as the connection stabilized, Tom made the connection to our recent interview. I love that guy. Both of these ridiculously talented fellows made up for frustratingly bad timing internet issues.

Check out MobLand on Paramount Plus, if you are a fan of any of the cast, you are going to dig the series.

I have a confession. I am a bit inexperienced in the world of Minecraft. That made walking into A Minecraft Movie an unexpected ride. And yes, my family had a good time with it. The thing that you cannot deny is the chemistry between Jason Momoa and Jack Black. These two fellas are truly engaging, and they make a charismatic duo. As well, I appreciated what the younger cast brought to it. Sebastian Hansen and Emma Myers are terrific. And Danielle Brooks, who plays a woman of many surprises, is a treat.

Warner Brothers had something special planned for the press day. The studio didn’t just rely on the talent sitting in a room with the journalist. Instead, they allowed us to have a bit of fun. It was my first-time zip-lining, which was awesome. And the impressive studio-size Minecraft set was wildly imaginative.

After a great start, the interviews began. First up was the film’s director, Jared Hess, and producer, Torfi Frans Olafsson. The two talked about their take on the Minecraft phenomenon and how they brought such a cast together. Next came Danielle Brooks, who was a bit of a scene-stealer, not an easy feat opposite Black and Momoa.

As fas as the rest of the cast, I truly enjoyed speaking to the younger talent, Sebastian Hansen and Emma Myers. Both round out a solid cast game for a little Minecraft madness. They were incredibly sweet and it was fun listening to their experiences.

To finish up the interviews, we spoke with Jason Momoa and Jack Black. The two were having a blast promoting this family comedic adventure. They talked about working with each other, and it was clear that they appreciated the experience. Having spoken to both before, I can say both are terrific separately. Yet together, it made for a really engaging exchange.

A Minecraft Movie opens this Friday at a theatre near you.

There have been countless scandals involving game shows over the years. The most famous adaptation of such an event was Robert Redford’s acclaimed Quiz Show, starring Ralph Fiennes and John Turturro. Still, there have been more recent instances, including a bizarre one in 1984 involving a man who figured out how to beat one of the most popular game shows on American television, Press Your Luck. The Luckiest Man in America dramatizes that event with a fantastic cast led by Paul Walter Hauser.

The film tells the story of ice cream truck driver Michael Larson (Paul Walter Hauser), an unemployed ice cream truck driver from Ohio who cons his way onto Press Your Luck. As he begins to win record-breaking prizes, those behind the scenes figure out he may be doing more than just playing the game. As the truth becomes apparent, Michael’s true motivations become evident, revealing a truth as bizarre as the events unfolding on camera. Directed by Samir Oliveros, The Luckiest Man in America co-stars Walton Goggins, Shamier Anderson, Brian Geraghty, Patti Harrison, Haley Bennett, Damian Young, Lilli Kay, James Wolk, Shaunette Renée Wilson, David Rysdahl, Ricky Russert, David Strathairn, Johnny Knoxville, and Maisie Williams.

I talked about the film with star Paul Walter Hauser and how he got involved in the film. We also discussed whether he found the real Michael Larson to be a bad guy or just a troubled one. We also touched on the fantastic cast of actors and what it was like working with Walton Goggins. Hauser, who will next be seen in The Fantastic Four: First Steps in an undisclosed role, also talked about his role in the Liam Neeson-led reboot/sequel of The Naked Gun and clarified the role he will be playing. Check out the full interview in the embed above.

The Luckiest Man in America opens in theaters on April 4th. You can read our review of the film at THIS LINK.

I had the pleasure of seeing an early screening of Bleeker Street‘s The Friend, starring Naomi Watts and the legendary Bill Murray. Keep in mind that this is a drama (with some comedy elements sprinkled in) that focuses on dealing with grief and the daunting task of caring for a VERY large dog who tragically lost its owner. As a former large dog owner myself, while living in a small apartment, I was able to relate to this film.

When I was offered the opportunity to speak with Naomi Watts and Bill Murray, I was ecstatic. I even had the pleasure of meeting Bing, the dog from the movie! Originally, he was supposed to be present during my interview with them, but he needed time to get acclimated to where the press junket was taking place. Bill and Naomi expressed their pleasure working with Bing, and of course, without going into spoilers, I asked them both about the film’s powerful final scene. To top it all off, Bill talked about the dogs he owned.

Additionally, I sat down with filmmakers Scott McGehee and David Siegal, who wrote and directed the film. They told me about the audition process for casting Apollo and the Great Dane and the details of the novel the film is based on. They also spoke about working with Bill Murray, which is always a unique experience. Everyone was an absolute pleasure to talk with, which reflects the movie’s greatness.

The Friend has the following synopsis: New York City writer Iris finds her comfortable, solitary life thrown into disarray after her closest friend and mentor bequeaths her a Great Dane named Apollo. The huge dog immediately creates practical problems for Iris, from furniture destruction to eviction notices, as well as more existential ones. Yet as Iris finds herself unexpectedly bonding with Apollo, she begins to come to terms with her past, and her own creative inner life.

The Actor has been in development for quite a while. Adapted from the Donald E. Westlake novel Memory, the film follows an amnesiac actor, played by Andre Holland, who finds himself stranded in a small Ohio town in the 1950s. It comes from director Duke Johnson, who previously co-directed the stop-motion comedy/drama Anomalisa with Charlie Kaufman. Known for his work in stop-motion, which includes stints on Community and more, Johnson makes his solo directorial debut.

Recently, we had the chance to talk to Johnson about his long-gestating project, with it initially having been earmarked for Ryan Gosling, before being reconfigured as a vehicle for Andre Holland. Widely acclaimed for his starring role on The Knick, Holland is a rising star, and we were lucky enough to chat with him and his co-star in the film, Gemma Chan, who many of our readers will know from her star-turn in Marvel’s Eternals.

The Actor, which comes from Neon, is a highly unique film that you can catch in limited release, as well as on VOD. Check out our interviews above and let us know what you thought of the movie in the comments!

Here’s the film’s synopsis: Actor Paul Cole suffers memory loss after an assault in Ohio. Stranded in an unfamiliar town, he strives to return home and recover his past.

The Ballad of Wallis Island is exactly what I needed. Featuring wonderful performances from Carey Mulligan, Tom Basden, and Tim Key, the film is beautifully directed by James Griffiths. In it, Key plays Charles, a wealthy lottery winner who dreams of his favourite musical band McGwyer Mortimer (Basden and Mulligan), reuniting. And he has a crazy plan to help make it happen. Wallis Island is a love letter to the power of music. It is delightfully funny at times, heartbreaking at others, and the music is terrific. It’s a feature (reminiscent of John Carney’s work) that is most worthy of discovery.

After being utterly charmed by this Ballad, I had a wonderful time speaking to the cast and the film’s director. I’ve always appreciated the talents of Ms. Mulligan. And I especially enjoy when she takes on musical projects like Inside Llewyn Davis. Tom Basden and Tim Key play brilliantly opposite Mulligan. Add to that a director who has a way with bringing this story to life, and you have an enjoyable conversation.

I adored this flick. It’s nice to see something with such a warm heart, and exceptional talent bringing it to life. If you want something other that your run-of-the-mill summer moviegoing experience, I highly recommend this. The music is lovely, as are the filmmakers and the cast. The Ballad of Wallis Island opens in wide release on April 11th. Clearly, for me this feature is like a catchy tune that is still ringing in my ears. And I mean that in the best of ways.
