On February 7th, Sony Pictures gave a theatrical release to the Valentine’s Day-set horror romantic comedy Heart Eyes (you can read our review HERE), the latest film from Werewolves Within and Scare Me director Josh Ruben. Now, just over three weeks later, the film has received a Digital release and is available to watch on Amazon, among other platforms.

Heart Eyes has the following synopsis: When the Heart Eyes Killer strikes Seattle, a pair of co-workers pulling overtime on Valentine’s Day are mistaken for a couple by the elusive couple-hunting killer. Now they must spend the most romantic night of the year running for their lives. Ruben previously provided the following statement: “My love of horror is rivaled only by my love of romantic comedies. I’m excited as hell to mount my most challenging genre bender to date: a brutal slasher in a nostalgic rom-com universe.“ Christopher Landon and Michael Kennedy, a duo that had previously worked together on the body swap slasher Freaky and the time travel slasher Time Cut, wrote the screenplay with Phillip Murphy (The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard).

Olivia Holt of Totally Killer and Mason Gooding from the two most recent Scream movies star alongside Jordana Brewster (The Fast and the Furious), Devon Sawa (Final Destination), and Gigi Zumbado (The Price We Pay).

Heart Eyes is set up at Spyglass, and Republic Pictures has picked up distribution rights to the film outside of the U.S. and Canada. Landon is producing the film with Divide/Conquer’s Greg Gilreath and Adam Hendricks. Spyglass’ Gary Barber and Chris Stone serve as executive producers with Murphy and Mel Turner. The film has been rated R for strong violence and gore, language and some sexual content.

Our friends at Bloody Disgusting report that a DVD and Blu-ray release of Heart Eyes is scheduled for April 15th. The Blu-ray and Digital extras include: – Murders & Meet Cutes: The Making of Heart Eyes – Gag Reel – Deleted & Extended Scenes – Filmmaker Commentary. Super Bowl Box office

The notoriously slow Super Bowl weekend lived up to its dire reputation at the box office this weekend, with neither of the weekend’s two promising new releases, Heart Eyes and Love Hurts, managing to attract much of an audience. As we predicted earlier this week, Captain Underpants spinoff Dog Man didn’t have any trouble keeping its paws on the top spot. However, the 62% week-to-week drop-off isn’t anything to write home about, with the general consensus being that the $13.7 million weekend is a disappointment. However, with a $54 million gross, the film will easily turn a nice profit for Universal and Dreamworks, although it might not earn enough to merit a sequel at this point. Woof.

Heart Eyes, a pretty darn good rom-com/slasher mash-up, opened much softer than expected with $8.5 million. The B-minus CinemaScore isn’t bad for a horror flick, but it seems this won’t launch the Valentine’s Day horror franchise the studio hoped for. Bummer. However, the most heartbreaking opening of the weekend goes to Ke Huy Quan’s actioner Love Hurts, which only managed a disastrous $5.8 million, which doesn’t bode well for The Goonies’ star’s future as an action hero. That said, the general consensus seems to be that it’s the movie, not Quan, that’s the problem, with it having an overly familiar plot and little in the way of sparks with leading lady Ariana DeBose, who’s had a troubled run at the box office following her Oscar win for West Side Story, with Kraven, Argylle, I.S.S and this one all being notable flops. Clearly, Hollywood hasn’t found a movie that properly capitalizes on her talents.

Mufasa: The Lion King, which has proven to be a sleeper after a disastrous opening over the holidays, has managed to hold on to the fourth spot, earning $3.92 million for a $235 million-plus total. While that’s only a fraction of what the 2019 Lion King made, it’s still a solid result for a movie many thought was going to tank a month ago.

Companion

One disappointing entry on the chart is Companion, the buzzy horror flick that plummeted 68% to a $3.02 million weekend. This suggests the movie is due for a quick turnaround to Max, where perhaps it will find the audience that eluded it in theaters. The news was better for the Keke Palmer/SZA vehicle One of Them Days, which has become a major sleeper hit, with it making $3 million for a total just shy of $40 million.

Of all the movies on the charts this weekend, the one with the highest per-screen average is Becoming Led Zeppelin, which made a solid $2.62 million during its exclusive IMAX run. I was under the weather this weekend, but I plan on catching (and reviewing) this flick sometime this week. The Mel Gibson thriller Flight Risk did $2.6 million for a $25 million total. While not exactly a hit, this poorly received thriller should turn a profit for the hit-strapped Lionsgate. Sonic the Hedgehog 3 hit number 9 with $1.75 million and a $233 million total, while Disney’s Moana 2 rounded out the top 10 with $1.5 million and a massive $456.1 million domestic total.

Next weekend should infuse some much-needed excitement into the box office, with Captain America: Brave New World likely to open north of $70 million. This would be a far cry from the type of grosses we used to expect from the MCU, but it should be decent nonetheless. Do you think it has a chance of actually turning a profit? Let us know in the comments!

Heart Eyes Love Hurts

Super Bowl weekend is notoriously lacklustre at the box office, and according to Deadline, this weekend’s new releases aren’t doing much to help boost the weekend’s box office rep. Currently, it looks like neither the horror rom-com Heart Eyes nor the Ke Huy Quan action flick Love Hurts will open in the double digits, which is lower than we predicted earlier this week. Dog Man will lead the box office with a second weekend of around $13 million (posting a heftier-than-expected drop of over 60%), while Heart Eyes should open in second place between $8-10 million.

Love Hurts, the heavily-hyped launching pad for Ke Huy Quan as an action hero is opening poorly, with it only on track for a $6.5 million weekend. The reviews for this one have been dire (our own Tyler Nichols liked it more than most – giving it a so-so 6/10), with word-of-mouth abysmal. Its CinemaScore rating is a terrible C+, with many complaining there’s nothing fresh or original about this Nobody knock-off.

Heart Eyes’s word-of-mouth isn’t much better, with a B-minus CinemaScore, but despite its underperformance, rival horror flick Companion hasn’t been able to make up for its own subpar opening. It’s on track to post a 60%-ish decline and a $3.4 million weekend, meaning it’s due for a quick turnaround to VOD. I’d expect it to be playing on Max by mid-March.

Of course, the big guns will start rolling out next weekend, with Disney launching Marvel’s much-delayed Captain America: Brave New World, which industry estimates say has a good chance of grossing more than $80 million over the President’s Day Weekend. We shall see, but either way, we’ll be back with a full box office wrap-up tomorrow!

Heart Eyes Review: A Horror Rom Com perfect for date night https://www.joblo.com/heart-eyes-review/ https://www.joblo.com/heart-eyes-review/#respond Fri, 07 Feb 2025 21:44:47 +0000 https://www.joblo.com/?p=822703 While it might be too light for hardcore horror fans, Heart Eyes is still a fun horror/comedy mash-up.

PLOT: The infamous Heart Eyes killer has been targeting couples on Valentine’s Day for many years. Soon, two co-workers (Mason Gooding and Olivia Holt) mistaken for a couple find themselves spending what’s supposed to be the most romantic night of the year running for their lives.

REVIEW: Watching Heart Eyes, I wondered why there haven’t been more romantic comedy/ horror mash-ups. After all, the horror genre is a perennial date night staple, as nothing breaks the ice on a date like being frightened and clutching your date’s arm when a jump scare happens. Director Josh Ruben, who previously helmed the well-received Scare Me and Werewolves Within, dives head-first into both genres with a gory slasher film that leans more heavily into the rom-com aspects than you might expect, given the film a unique flavour.

To be sure, Ruben and his team of writers (including Happy Death Day’s Christopher Landon) purposefully lean into all the rom-com tropes with their two leads. Olivia Holt’s Ally is a driven career woman with a broken heart and no time in her life for romance. Mason Gooding’s Jay is her new, high-flying co-worker who, despite his ladykiller vibe, wants to settle down and find “the one.” They work for a fashion brand trying to build a campaign around romance, so to do some “research,” they book a table at the most romantic restaurant in town. Alas, the Heart Eyes killer, who we learn has been terrorizing couples for years, has recently arrived in their city, mistakes them for a particularly happy couple, and becomes focused on doing away with them.

Now, Heart Eyes may not be for the more hard-core horror fan. While some nifty gore moments earn it a hard-R rating, the vibe is kept light throughout. Even when running for their lives, Gooding and Holt, a likeable pair, trade quips and never seem especially afraid, even if a maniac is chasing them. Gooding is a rising star in the genre thanks to his role in the Scream movies and he settles nicely into a leading man part. While newer to the genre, Holt makes for a solid final girl, and their chemistry is strong enough that you hope they’ll end up together in true rom-com fashion by the time the credits roll.

Heart Eyes review

However, it should be said that the Heart Eyes killer’s reign is definitely secondary to the romance. I’d definitely classify Heart Eyes as a rom-com that just happens to have horror elements, and despite the high body count, the killer’s reign never seems to be taken too seriously. Given that it’s a comedy, all the side characters are played for laughs, with Devon Sawa and Jordan Brewster’s Heart Eyes-hunting cops knowingly named Hobbs & Shaw in a cheeky nod to Brewster’s most popular franchise. Sawa chews the scenery as the ultra-macho Hobbs, while Brewster’s Shaw complains about never being able to find a man (a bit of a stretch given how jaw-droopingly gorgeous she is). Neither is played straight, but they have bigger roles than you’d think, with mistaken identity and a violent trip to the police station ranking among the film’s goriest highlights.

Heart Eyes should prove to be a solid sleeper when it comes out, as it is perfect for the audience it’s targeting – couples. Hard-core horror aficionados might be more challenging to please, but if you don’t mind the heavy emphasis on comedy and romance, you’ll still find plenty to like about the slasher flick, including practical gore effects and a superb design for the killer’s mask. I had a good time with it and wouldn’t be adverse to seeing this turn into a perennial Valentine’s Day tradition, where the killer stalks a new couple in each sequel.

Heart Eyes, Love Hurts, Ke Huy Quan

Audiences can feel the love for the Valentine’s Day-themed horror film Heart Eyes as the dark, comedic slasher hacks into $1.1M in Thursday previews at the box office. The Josh Ruben-directed bloodbath leads a sleepy Super Bowl weekend at the cinema, though we expect Heart Eyes to earn close to $12 million by the end of the sports-centric weekend. Heart Eyes stars Jordana Brewster (Furious 7, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning), Olivia Holt (Cloak & Dagger, Same Kind of Different as Me), Mason Gooding (Scream VI, Fall), and Devon Sawa (Final Destination, Idel Hands), and focuses on the “Heart Eyes Killer,” who wreaks havoc on Valentine’s Day by stalking and murdering romantic couples. It’s a splatter horror whodunnit with laughs and spurting arteries. In other words, it’s the perfect Valentine’s Day treat!

Universal and 87North‘s Love Hurts, starring Oscar-winner Ke Huy Quan (Everything Everywhere All At Once, The Goonies) and Ariana DeBose (West Side Story, Kraven the Hunter), launched with $850K, markedly less than the studio hoped for. In Love Hurts, a realtor (Ke Huy Quan) is pulled back into the life he left behind after his former partner-in-crime resurfaces with an ominous message. With his crime-lord brother also on his trail, he must confront his past and the history he never fully buried. The action-packed film features Quan performing more martial arts, allowing him to live out his stunt performer dreams.

Heart Eyes and Love Hurts began previews at 2 p.m. in around 2,600 locations. Both movies occupy a portion of PLF screens, which could help them bring more bucks home before the weekend totals roll in. While Heart Eyes reviews positively with an 85% Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, Love Hurts isn’t making critics’ hearts pitter-pat with its 23% Rotten score. The budget for both films sits at the $18M mark, giving them a fair shot at earning their money back and then some.

Finally, Dreamworks Animation’s Dog Man is sure to take the top spot at the box office again with an estimated $20M.

Will you go to the cinema this weekend? I hope to see Love Hurts tomorrow night despite its lukewarm reception. Let us know your weekend plans in the comments section below.

The Valentine’s Day-set horror romantic comedy Heart Eyes, the latest film from Werewolves Within and Scare Me director Josh Ruben is now in theatres (you can read our 7/10 review HERE and watch our interviews with cast members at THIS LINK), and during an interview with our friends at Bloody Disgusting, Ruben revealed that he used writer/director Tom McLoughlin’s 1986 classic Jason Lives: Friday the 13th Part VI as his guide when figuring out how to balance horror and comedy in his own slasher movie.

Stuntman Alex McCall plays the titular slasher.

Ruben told Bloody Disgusting, “My gold standard, my north star, was Tommy McLoughlin’s Jason Lives. That film is as brutal as it is silly as it is fun, and that was the white whale. Then everything after that was searching within myself, the kid that loved rom-coms, like Sleepless in Seattle, which is as funny and sweet as it is heartbreaking, super well acted but also silly, etc. Also, movies like Defending Your Life and Big and so on and so forth.

Talking about the performance of the film’s killer, Ruben added, “I wanted to see what our stunt performer, Alex McCall, he’s phenomenal, brought to it without instructing Alex to do anything specifically. I did tell him he had to watch Jason Lives. I wanted to start there and say, ‘Alex, just watch Jason Lives, and let me just see what you do.’ Then I would tweak it. I wanted to get the head cock because they always do the head cock, you know, and that just feels super iconic to me. I always pictured (Halloween‘s) Nick Castle, or really any moment in H20 where you get to see Michael do his famous move. But the most original you can make it is allowing an individual to come in and put their stamp on it. Then I shape that if I need to. The only thing I would instruct Alex to do was sharpen certain movements or keep sensuality in mind because Heart Eyes is kind of an erotic character, in a way. We talked a little bit about Pinhead, etc. But I needed them to bring their own originality to it, and then, from then on, anything that bumped me as the director, ‘No, that’s too much, or it’s too little, or it’s not enough.’ There’s very little you have to do in a mask like that to be effective.

As for the lighting – Jason Lives was a source of inspiration in that department, too! “I wanted blue moonlight from the beginning. I’m a huge blue moonlight fan. I love my Joe Dante. I love Jaws, I love Get Out. And I also love anything Steven Spielberg that used to freak me out. I wanted to bring blue moonlight into the fray because rom-coms of yesteryear also had blue moonlight that usually came in through raked blinds. You look at Jason Lives, and there’s the same lighting/gaffing effect, shaping the room, so blue moonlight was where we started. Then you bring in the colors of a Valentine’s Day movie to make it feel like you’re watching a rom-com that then gets, you know, Wes Craven.” I’m totally with him on the love for blue moonlight lighting. We need more blue moonlight in modern movies, especially most movies these days are too damn dark.

More quotes from Ruben can be found at the Bloody Disgusting link.

Friday the 13th is my favorite franchise and Jason Lives: Friday the 13th Part VI is one of my favorite entries in that franchise (and it also happens to be the movie that got me into horror in the first place), so I’m very glad to hear that Jason Lives was such a great source of inspiration for Ruben while he was making Heart Eyes.

Will you be catching the Jason Lives-inspired Heart Eyes on the big screen? Let us know by leaving a comment below.

Dog Man, Love Hurts, box office

Last weekend, Dreamworks Animation‘s Dog Man took a bite out of the top spot at the domestic box office while howling at the moon with $36M for its opening weekend. Drew Hancock’s psychological thriller Companion trailed behind Dog Man with a pooper-scooper despite favorable reviews (including one from JoBlo’s Tyler Nichols) for a $9.5M opening. As a spinoff of the Captain Underpants books by Dav Pilkey, Dog Man features a starry cast of voice talent, including Pete Davidson, Isla Fisher, Lil Rel Howery, Poppy Liu, and Ricky Gervais. The half-man, half-dog, all-cop animated comedy stands to lift its leg on the number one slot at the box office this weekend with an additional $16M-$20M, even as Super Bowl LIX looks to tackle a majority of audiences.

Chasing after Dog Man this weekend is the Jonathan Eusebio-directed action comedy Love Hurts, starring Everything Everywhere All At Once Oscar-winner and former Goonie Ke Huy Quan as a realtor thrust back into a world he left behind after a former partner-in-crime (Ariana DeBose) resurfaces with grim tidings. Despite starring the lovable Quan – responsible for one of Hollywood’s most incredible and endearing comeback stories – and presenting an electrifying and action-packed trailer, Love Hurts is likely headed for heartbreak with an $8M-$12M debut.

Nipping at the heels of Love Hurts is the Josh Ruben-directed romantic slasher film Heart Eyes, starring Jordana Brewster, Olivia Holt, Devon Sawa, Mason Gooding, Gigi Zumbado, and more. Heart Eyes is a genre-bending Valentine’s Day-adjacent romp about the exploits of the “Heart Eyes Killer,” who wreaks havoc on the heart-shaped holiday by stalking and murdering romantic couples. Early buzz suggests Heart Eyes is gruesome fun with creative kills, whodunnit twists, and engaging performances. Still, we expect Heart Eyes to break even with Love Hurts with an $8M-$12M launch. It’s worth noting that Heart Eyes has additional competition with Companion and Wolf Man, two spooky films that could pull audiences away from Ruben’s holiday-themed massacre.

Other films that could appear in the Top 5 include Disney’s enduring live-action animated prequel, Mufasa: The Lion King, Mel Gibson’s Flight Risk, and One of Them Days, starring Keke Palmer and SZA.

Here are our predictions:

  1. Dog Man: $20 million
  2. Love Hurts: $12 million
  3. Heart Eyes: $12 million
  4. Mufasa: The Lion King: $4 million
  5. Flight Risk: $2 million

Which movies do you think will rule the box office during Super Bowl weekend? Let us know in the comments section below.

I dug Heart Eyes! A fun, fast-paced mash-up of the romantic comedy genre and slasher flicks, it should do nicely at the box office this weekend. It certainly doesn’t hurt that the surprisingly gory R-rated flick stars rising horror icon Mason Gooding in one of the leading roles and has a witty screenplay by Happy Death Day’s Christopher Landon. We gave it a solid review, and folks should enjoy it when it opens this Friday.

Recently, we had the chance to sit down with the cast for a round of interviews, and you can tell how excited they were about potentially launching a new franchise. First up were Mason Gooding, Olivia Holt, and Gigi Zumbado. Holt reflected on playing her first final girl, Gooding paid tribute to the horror community that has embraced him, and Zumbado yearns for her own match-up against Heart Eyes.

Next were two legends, Jordan Brewster and Devon Sawa. Brewster, who’s had a long career in horror (going back to The Faculty), had a blast in her role, with her having fun at a certain Fast & Furious nod, which was apparently in the script even before she was hired. And, like Gooding, Sawa acknowledges how supportive horror fans have been throughout this career, and expresses his hope that the now-cancelled Chucky series gets revived.

Dog Man

Last weekend, Dog Man easily topped the box office, with the Captain Underpants spin-off outperforming all expectations – including our own. The Universal/Dreamworks animated film made a solid $36 million in the beginning of February, paving the way for a long run at the box office, with not too much in the way of competition for family audiences coming out until Captain America: Brave New World, which comes out on the President’s Day holiday weekend.

Variety reports that Dog Man is estimated to win the weekend again with a prediction of $19 million to $22 million. Although it will see a bit of competition this time around, the new releases are not looking to be much of a match. One of the releases is the Ke Huy Quan action comedy Love Hurts. The film sees Quan leading a movie for the first time and Quan brings the martial arts action again courtesy of David Leitch’s 87North. “Quan stars as Marvin Gable, a realtor working the Milwaukee suburbs, where ‘For Sale’ signs bloom. Gable receives a crimson envelope from Rose (Ariana DeBose), a former partner-in-crime that he had left for dead. She’s not happy,” reads the Love Hurts synopsis. “Now, Marvin is thrust back into a world of ruthless hitmen, filled with double-crosses and open houses turned into deadly warzones. With his brother Knuckles (Daniel Wu), a volatile crime lord, hunting him, Marvin must confront the choices that haunt him and the history he never truly buried.”

The other new release is the horror film, Heart Eyes, whose description reads, “When the Heart Eyes Killer strikes Seattle, a pair of co-workers pulling overtime on Valentine’s Day are mistaken for a couple by the elusive couple-hunting killer. Now they must spend the most romantic night of the year running for their lives.” Both Love Hurts and Heart Eyes (two movies somewhat capitalizing on the Valentine’s Day holiday) are not tracking as well as Dog Man as they both are estimated to start off in the single digits with just $7 million to $8 million.

Both new movies also compete with Super Bowl Sunday as the big championship event usually takes the weekend as the most-watched television event of the year and often doesn’t encourage as much movie-going from the public.

On Halloween, Sony Pictures unveiled a red band teaser trailer for the Valentine’s Day-set horror romantic comedy Heart Eyes – and last week, the film’s director, Josh Ruben (who previously brought us Werewolves Within and Scare Me), took to social media to let it be known that the full trailer would be dropping online this week. Sure enough, the full trailer for Heart Eyes has now been unveiled, and you can check it out in the embed above.

Heart Eyes is set to reach theatres on February 7, 2025. February 14th is a Friday, so that would seem to be the perfect choice for this movie’s release date, but it was already taken by Disney/Marvel’s Captain America: Brave New World, so Sony had to move it to the week before Valentine’s Day. Its competition on that date is the Universal action movie Love Hurts, starring Ke Huy Quan.

Mason Gooding Scream VI

February 14th is a Friday in 2025, so that would seem to be the perfect choice of release date for a horror romantic comedy that’s set on Valentine’s Day, which is what the movie Heart Eyes is. But the February 14th release date has already been taken by Disney/Marvel’s Captain America: Brave New World and Paramount’s Smurfs animated movie… so Sony Pictures has chosen to release Heart Eyes on February 7th. Its competition on that date is the Universal action movie With Love, starring Ke Huy Quan.

Coming our way from Josh Ruben, the director of Werewolves Within and Scare MeHeart Eyes was scripted by Happy Death Day director Christopher Landon, Landon’s Freaky collaborator Michael Kennedy (who also wrote It’s a Wonderful Knife), and Phillip Murphy (The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard). The film has the following synopsis: When the Heart Eyes Killer strikes Seattle, a pair of co-workers pulling overtime on Valentine’s Day are mistaken for a couple by the elusive couple-hunting killer. Now they must spend the most romantic night of the year running for their lives.

Olivia Holt of Totally Killer and Mason Gooding from the two most recent Scream movies star alongside Jordana Brewster (The Fast and the Furious), Devon Sawa (Final Destination), and Gigi Zumbado (The Price We Pay). We’ve been assuming that Holt and Gooding are playing the co-workers who have to run for their lives, but no details have been revealed about the characters being played by Brewster, Sawa, and Zumbado.

Ruben previously provided the following statement: “My love of horror is rivaled only by my love of romantic comedies. I’m excited as hell to mount my most challenging genre bender to date: a brutal slasher in a nostalgic rom-com universe.

There’s no way I’m going to miss a slasher from the folks who brought us films like Werewolves Within, Scare Me, Happy Death Day, Happy Death Day 2U, Freaky, and It’s a Wonderful Knife, so I’ll be watching Heart Eyes no matter what its release date is.

Earlier this month, it was announced that Olivia Holt of Totally Killer and Mason Gooding from the two most recent Scream movies had signed on to star in the horror romantic comedy Heart Eyes, which is filming in New Zealand with Josh Ruben, the director of Werewolves Within and Scare Me, at the helm. Now Deadline reports that Jordana Brewster (The Fast and the Furious), Devon Sawa (Final Destination), and Gigi Zumbado (The Price We Pay) are also in the cast.

Scripted by Happy Death Day director Christopher Landon, Landon’s Freaky collaborator Michael Kennedy (who also wrote It’s a Wonderful Knife), and Phillip Murphy (The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard), Heart Eyes has the following synopsis: When the Heart Eyes Killer strikes Seattle, a pair of co-workers pulling overtime on Valentine’s Day are mistaken for a couple by the elusive couple-hunting killer.
