Mickey 17, the quirky sci-fi about a simple laborer getting to respawn as a reprinted duplicate after dying, stars Robert Pattinson (who is currently the face of Batman for the studio) and comes from Bong Joon Ho, director of the Academy Award-winning film ParasiteMickey 17 sported a sizable science fiction budget of $118 million with its incredible-looking effects and set designs. It was also said to need around $275 million to $300 million worldwide to get in the black while making its theatrical run. Unfortunately, the futuristic clone comedy would only gross about $19 million in its first week, and in the second week, business dropped 60% with the competition of Novocaine.

It was being reported that Mickey 17 could cause a $100 million loss for Warner Bros. and the David Zaslav regime would not surprise anyone if they were to prematurely release it for digital home viewing. Although there hadn’t been official announcements, it was also reported that the film was considered to be dumped on digital when the second-week drop in sales was staggering. It didn’t quite hit streaming 18 days after its theatrical premiere, but Mickey 17 is now available to watch on digital.

Our own Chris Bumbray enjoyed the film, even if he found that a chunk of it didn’t work for him. He would say in his review“Indeed, Mickey 17 is all over the place in terms of quality. It’s one of the few recent films where I went back and forth between thinking it was a disaster and a masterpiece over and over again – sometimes in the same scene, depending on who was being showcased. Some of it is grating – some of it is superb. It doesn’t really work as a whole, but you know what? I’m glad it exists.”

Pattinson and Warners will continue their working relationship as he will finally get to film a sequel to The Batman after many delays. Pattinson and his Mickey 17 co-star Naomi Ackie interviewed each other for Hero Magazine, where Pattinson jokes about the delay.  Ackie would ask him about it, “It’s amazing. And obviously, you’re Batman – are you going to do Batman again soon?” Then, Pattinson jokes, “I f*cking hope so. [laughs] I started out as young Batman and I’m going to be fucking old Batman by the sequel. [both laugh]”

Weekend Box Office: Jason Statham knocks out Snow White, Blumhouse and more https://www.joblo.com/jason-statham-knocks-out-snow-white/ https://www.joblo.com/jason-statham-knocks-out-snow-white/#respond Sun, 30 Mar 2025 15:27:49 +0000 https://www.joblo.com/?p=833007 Jason Statham’s latest action flick, A Working Man, topped Snow White and more at the box office this weekend.

Magic mirror on the wall, who’s the fairest of them all? Jason Statham, evidently, as his latest action flick, A Working Man, has topped the weekend box office, poisoning the apple of Snow White, which continued its disappointing run by dropping to the number two spot.

A Working Man once again proved that Jason Statham’s fanbase is a continuously loyal one, as the movie – which reunites him with The Beekeeper director David Ayer – earned $15.2 million in its debut weekend, a chisel in its $40 million budget. For a movie that banks on Statham himself (and not an established franchise like Fast and the Furious), that’s pretty good, landing in The Beekeeper territory.

weekend box office 02

Now onto Snow White, which opened last week with just $47 million. The live-action (well, mostly) remake of the Disney classic was bound to fall but we didn’t expect it to do so in such embarrassing fashion, as it slipped nearly 70%. While that still put it as the weekend’s runner-up, it only took in another $14.2 million. For a movie that has a budget pegged upwards of $270 million, this is easily one of the biggest red marks for Disney. Hopefully this will make them reconsider their desire to remake their animated classics (although a lot are still on the calendar)…or at least convince Hollywood to stop casting Gal Gadot.

The rest of the box office was far less dramatic, although a curious choice came in at #3: The Chosen: The Last Supper ($11.5 million), which is actually part of an Amazon MGM Studios deal that sees the fifth season of the faith-based series getting a theatrical release before hitting Amazon. It’s an interesting strategy that is evidently paying off, pulling solid numbers for a movie that has a niche audience.

Blumhouse’s The Woman in the Yard snuck through the gate with $9.4 million. That single-digital number isn’t all that far from the movie’s $12 million budget, although the studio’s non-franchise fare usually at least opens in the doubles. Failing to sparkle was Death of a Unicorn, which poked its way into the top 5 with $5.8 million. You’d think that a movie starring Paul Rudd and Jenna Ortega would have fared far better at the box office but with mid reviews, an R rating and nothing really to grab an audience outside of the cast, it just didn’t have the magic to land.

weekend box office 03

One delight that made the top 10 was Hayao Miyazaki’s Princess Mononoke, now out courtesy of a 4K transfer. No doubt IMAX screens helped boost it to $3.5 million, but I’d also like to think those who were disgusted by OpenAI’s Studio Ghibli-inspired feature headed to the theater as a move of support. And considering its initial domestic run back in 1999 only saw it in 129 theaters, we’re calling this a win all around. Right behind it was Captain America: Brave New World, which, with another $2.75 million to its name, still stands as the highest-grossing movie of 2025 so far.

Meanwhile, Steven Soderbergh’s Black Bag is trying to nudge towards $20 million domestically with its $2.15 million this weekend. Soderbergh isn’t normally a splash at the box office but his movies are almost always worth seeing so good on him for hanging in the top 10 (even if Black Bag won’t recoup its budget, not even earning back half of it on the domestic front). The number nine and 10 spots would go to Bong Joon Ho’s Mickey 17 and the Jack Quaid action flick Novocaine, which is a lot of fun and well worth checking out. Mickey 17 took in $2 with a, while Novocaine earned $1.45 million in its third week. That might seem numb, but considering it has already recouped its budget, any extra bucks are welcome.

As it happens, Chris Bumbray’s box office predictions for this week’s totals underestimated Jason Statham’s ability to put in work. Our editor-in-chief, Chris Bumbray, thought Snow White would retain its top spot, but David Ayer and Jason Statham’s A Working Man hammered its way to the top of the list with a $15.2M debut over Snow White‘s $14.2M. Ah, well. Even a broken clock is right twice a day, right?

Next week will no doubt find a new champ at the box office, as A Minecraft Movie is looking to be a real blockbuster, proving to do well with advanced ticket sales ahead of its release. Other new titles include Lionsgate’s Pedro Pascal-starring Freaky Tales, horror-comedy Hell of a Summer (which is Finn Wolfhard’s co-directorial debut), The Luckiest Man in America (about the infamous Press Your Luck scandal) and Eric Laure (Michael Shannon’s own directorial debut). Mid-week, Screamboat – the latest horror movie taking advantage of copyright lapses – will also open.

What did you catch at the movies this weekend?

Mickey 17, first reactions

Warner Bros. has shown to be pretty cutthroat in the past with underperforming films. Last year, Kevin Costner’s passion project Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1 would finally hit screens and the Western epic, which sported a price tag of $100 million, was dumped on digital a mere three weeks after it premiered in theaters and the box office earnings for Costner and company would come in at just above $30 million. At the time, the unconventionally short release window was also thought to additionally be a strategy to get audiences interested in an already planned follow-up that was to be released a couple of months later. However, Warner Bros. completely scrapped the second chapter from their release schedule entirely at this point.

Enter Mickey 17 — a quirky sci-fi starring Robert Pattinson (who is currently the face of Batman for the studio) and comes from Bong Joon Ho, director of the Academy Award-winning film Parasite. Mickey 17 sported a budget of $118 million and was said to need around $275 million to $300 million worldwide to get in the black while making its theatrical run. The futuristic clone comedy would only gross about $19 million in its first week, and in the second week, business dropped 60% with the competition of Novocaine. Now, according to World of Reel, Warner Bros. may already be putting Mickey 17 on digital next week on March 25, which is only 18 days after release.

World of Reel and many outlets report this news as it broke on What to Stream, which came from their sources. Warner Bros. has yet to formally announce a digital release. However, it is being reported that Mickey 17 could cause a $100 million loss for the studio and the David Zaslav regime would not surprise anyone if they were to make a move like this.

Our own Chris Bumbray enjoyed the film, even if he found that a chunk of it didn’t work for him. He would say in his review, “Indeed, Mickey 17 is all over the place in terms of quality. It’s one of the few recent films where I went back and forth between thinking it was a disaster and a masterpiece over and over again – sometimes in the same scene, depending on who was being showcased. Mickey 17 Novocaine

2025’s box office woes just seem to be getting worse and worse. According to Deadline, as it stands now, the week’s number one movie – which is still a toss-up between Novocaine and Mickey 17 – isn’t likely to cross the double-digit mark. So far, Novocaine seems to have the edge, but it’s too close to call, with both movies looking on track to gross $8 million. While that’s an underwhelming number for Novocaine (a notch less than we predicted earlier this week), considering the low budget, it’s not a terrible result. However, the B CinemaScore is middling.

However, even if the week-to-week fall for Mickey 17 is less than 60%, the movie is shaping up to be a major bomb for Warner Bros. The movie is unlikely to cross the $40 million mark domestically, which is a horrible result for a film that cost north of $118 million. Focus Features’s Black Bag isn’t performing well either, with the star-studded spy-flick only on track for a $6 million opening. That’s not too far off from what Conclave made in its first weekend, but it was playing on 1000 fewer screens and had a lot of Oscar buzz propelling it throughout the fall movie season.

Other new releases, like Ketchup’s The Day the Earth Blew Up or A24’s Opus, aren’t making much of a dent. The Looney Tunes movie (which was bought from WB) is on track for a $2.15 million opening (on over 2000 screens) while Opus, following its middling reception at Sundance, is only on track for a $1.5 million opening, despite the presence of The Bear’s Ayo Edebiri in the lead role. A24’s cult of fans seems to be giving this one a pass so far. The CinemaScore is a pretty bad C+.

We’ll be back tomorrow with a full round-up!

Novocaine Mickey 17

One of the tightest box office battles for number one in recent memory is set to happen this weekend, with both the new release Novocaine, and WB’s second weekend holdover, Mickey 17 having a solid chance at coming in first place. However, neither are expected to make over $10 million, with this on track to be one of the slowest weekends of the year, as 2025’s box office grows more sluggish by the week.

While a $10 million start would be just fine for the modestly budgeted Novocaine, Mickey 17 badly needs a box office win. However, even if it drops a modest 50% this weekend (which is unlikely), it will still go down as a box office loser for Warner Bros. I’m expecting Novocaine to open with about $10 million, which would be a solid start for the movie, which launches The Boys’s Jack Quaid as a leading-man, in this comic actioner. The reviews have been solid (check out this one from our own Tyler Nichols), and his previous film, Companion, managed to open in roughly the same range.

Mickey 17 should make about $8 million, which would put it in a distant second place, with the final tally for this movie likely well under the $40 million mark. Ouch. Warner Bros has been having a rough year at the box office, with their next release, Alto Knights, barely getting promoted. At the same time, A Minecraft Movie is a big question mark for everyone, as is Ryan Coogler’s big-budget Sinners.

The Steven Soderbergh spy romp, Black Bag, should manage a third place finish with about $7 million, although given how close the race is this weekend, anything goes. It could surprise everyone and outperform Novocaine and Mickey 17 and open in first! Or it could totally flop – it’s hard to tell with these kinds of adult-targeted flicks.

Captain America: Brave New World will likely drop to fourth place, with about $6 million, while Paddington in Peru should round out the top five with $2.5 million. There’s also a chance Ketchup Entertainment’s Looney Tunes movie, The Day the Earth Blew Up, could crack the top five, although given how new the company is, it would be a big surprise (one of our critics loved it)

My predictions:

  1. Novocaine: $10 million
  2. Mickey 17: $8 million
  3. Black Bag: $7 million
  4. Captain America: Brave New World: $6 million
  5. Paddington in Peru: $2.5 million

After a brief delay, acclaimed South Korean filmmaker Bong Joon Ho returned to theaters last weekend with Mickey 17, a quirky sci-fi epic starring Robert Pattinson that, despite its stumble during its box office debut, dethroned Marvel’s Captain America: Brave New World after three weeks at the top of the charts. The director is striking with this high-concept sci-fi after his big Academy Awards win with Parasite. However, this week will also see competition arise with an action comedy that boasts an interesting hook — a timid protagonist who cannot feel pain.

This film, Novocaine, which stars Jack Quaid as the reluctant hero, is being projected to take the top spot this week. According to Variety, projections on the film are estimated to bring in $10 million to $12 million from 3,300 North American theaters in its first weekend of release. It wouldn’t be a bad start, as the movie’s price tag at Paramount Pictures came in at $18 million. Meanwhile, the estimates for Mickey 17 are expected to drop by 55% to 60% after its $19 million debut from the past week. Projections are putting its second-weekend earnings at around $8 million to $9 million. The Robert Pattinson clone film has already grossed $20.5 million domestically and $54 million globally.

Novocaine is already getting good buzz for capitalizing on its brutal fun premise. Our Tyler Nichols had a blast, as he said in his review, “I feel like whenever some action movie comes along that impresses, it’s always “this reminds me of the kind of film from a different era” but that doesn’t apply here. Novocaine feels very modern, and builds off of all the similar movies that have come before it. There were some twists and turns that I never saw coming and it helped keep the film fresh. While it doesn’t break from the norm too often, when it does, it gives the film a lot more personality. Jack Quaid has added yet another character type that he can pull off effortlessly: action star.”

This week also sees the releases of Steven Soderbergh’s spy thriller Black Bag, which stars Michael Fassbender and Cate Blanchett, and Ayo Edebiri and John Malkovich’s surrealist satire Opus.

The obsessed stalker lurks outside the layer of her favorite sparkling movie star.  Her drive is strong; her mission is to never cease until she wins his famous heart, fulfilling her cinematic fantasy and making everything right in the world. One day, her annoying and invasive tactics actually work, causing the movie star to accept her invitation, and off they go to a cafe or something. He sat her down, looking deep into her soul with his dreamy eyes, and proceeded to just complain about how awful his life was. Boring her with negativity until every ounce of fangirl vanished into the cold wind. Destroying her fairy tale fantasy with nothing but his bizarre and brutal truth. And I guess for some, that’s what it is like to watch Robert Pattinson in a movie nowadays. Too many popcorn munchers had locked this man’s career in a vampire-shaped coffin, assuming he would be nothing more than an undead one-hit-wonder. Then, getting a sudden blast of arthouse realism to the face, and at first, we didn’t know what to think. But soon, it was time for all the Bellas to fall in love all over again… or get weirded out by his acting choices and claim you were Team Jacob all along. But after a series of knockout performances in the most unique and original films over that past decade, the name Robert Pattinson does not twinkle in the sunshine with cringe teeny bop madness; the name Robert Pattinson now brings up images of darkness and pain and talent and risk and artistry…. oh yeah, and he is The  Batman too. But is he experimenting a little too much nowadays? Or is he the finest actor of his generation? Or should we just enjoy his films and not give a fuck? Because he sure doesn’t.  And it’s a beautiful thing to watch. So yeah, WTF happened to Robert Pattinson?

Robert Pattinson Twilight

He was born on his birthday in 1986 in London, England. A shy child who excelled on the stage. After a fantasy TV Movie called Ring of the Nibelungs, young Robby Patts pretty much started his film career on the cutting room floor, with his scenes not making it into the film Vanity Fair in 2004. Rumor has it that the casting director felt so bad for not telling poor Pattinson about getting chopped from the film that she booked him a Harry Potter auction just out of sympathy.  Surprising everyone when he was hired for the role of Cedric in Harry Potter and the Goblet of  Fire. He was 19 years old.

Then came Twilight and its sequels. They became a pop cultural juggernaut and turned Robert into a heartthrob. He started out as difficult to work with, often disagreeing on how to portray Edward. He was going too dark and was almost fired for it. So, to avoid unemployment, he changed things up a bit and made some Hollywood compromises. It results in a wooden performance. Sure, these films made billions, but that resulted in overexposure. Everyone mocked him, from Jimmy Fallon to a handful of spoof films. Due to this frustration and his overall attitude, he always made sure to let everyone know that he was not a fan of this franchise and criticized the plot holes and overall absurdity of vampires going to high school. He had no fear of those press junkets. This drama, on top of a major cheating scandal with his co-star, was just too much for this sensitive private man. You could tell he hated every moment of the hellish flashing lights of fame. A red-carpet prison.

While caught in the Twilight saga, he could still express himself artistically with smaller projects, allowing him to play around more and make art. He literally played a character named Art in the film How To Be, soon after the first Twilight film. And that same year,  he played one of the greatest, most eccentric artists of all time, Salvador Dali, in Little Ashes. He squeezed out a mustache and performed real sex acts on himself in a desperate display to show everyone that he was a serious actor, and because of that, we had to believe him. Gross.  Along with the titles Remember Me, Love And Distrust, and the romantic drama Water For Elephants in 2011. Remember, this was all done in between his Twilight shooting schedule. This young man had conquered Hollywood as a movie star, so he had nothing to do but prove himself as an actor and artist. Many actors often join prestigious period pieces and work with auteur filmmakers to build their arthouse street credentials. Robert Pattinson did just that with Bel Ami and David Cronenberg’s Cosmopolis. Both were made in 2012, the same year he finally finished with his dreaded franchise of fangs and broke away after Breaking Dawn –  Part 2.

Robert Pattinson, The Lighthouse

Terrified of former typecasting, Robert knew he could stop searching for challenging out-of-the-box roles, and when he read the script for The Rover, he knew this character would bring him attention from a different audience. Crippled with anxiety, Pattinson needed 45 mins to calm down for the audition. Of course, he nailed it, and his subtle and gritty perforce brought this film to Cannes. This was followed by another wave of kino, with films like another  Cronenberg flickThe Childhood of a Leader, the debut film of The Brutalist director Brady Corbet. Then stealing scenes with his intensity and beard in The Lost City of Z. Screen time or box office didn’t seem to matter to Robert. He would rather inhabit a complex, troubled character and work with directors he respects. He risked it all and totally could have done an endless assembly line mindless shlock, but he didn’t.  And when Pattinson finally joined the world of blockbusters and superheroes, he made sure that visionary directors like Christopher Nolan and Matt Reeves were behind them. We will get to that in a bit. But in my humble opinion, it was the film Good Time that secured Pattinson’s artistic legacy. Finally, taking the lead in this Safdie brothers’ tense, incredible picture, which allows him to improvise throughout the entire film. The directors have him channel the  PTSD Pattinson experienced from the mega fame and pressure Twilight brought him. And it totally worked. I always believed in him but never expected this level of skill. Erasing all memories and shining a glorious independent light of the shadow that was Twilight. Replacing the beautiful sparkles with the beautiful chaos that only the best cinema can give. Damsel, High Life, Waiting For Barbarians, The Devil All the Time and a chilling turn in The King were solid additions to his unconventional yet fascinating filmography but it was his.

Good Time performance that made Matt Reeves pick The Patt Man to be his The Batman. But before he could become the dark knight and battle The Penguin, Catwoman, and The Riddler, he had to light up the dark nights and battle seagulls, mermaids, and a guy who should have played  The Joker in Robert Eggers’s masterpiece of madness, The Lighthouse. Critics were mesmerized by the hypnotic, fearless performances and the surreal atmosphere that Robert and  Willem fit into perfectly. Watching these two dance around and yell at each other as they slowly slip into insanity is why God created actors. And for how the public now saw Pattinson, this was pretty much the rebranding of the century. He was free. He could do anything he wanted and possibly save the world of artsy-fartsy cinema in the process. And after doing his thing in Tenet, we thought this thespian could surprise us no more… so then he did the one thing nobody thought he would do… take on the superhero genre.

Mickey 17, Robert Pattinson

For many of us, our first reaction upon hearing the news of Pattinson playing Bruce Wayne was an insult. There were still plenty of uneducated buffoons who had somehow missed the resurrection and renaissance of this Robert. So whenever I heard anyone complain about “the Twilight guy” as the new Batman, I saw it as an opportunity to introduce them to his post-Twilight work, which helped ease their doubt that he would ruin their ruined childhood. The Batman grossed over $770 million. He did the impossible again and returned to his superstar blockbuster status, but this time, he did it via skills and dedication to his craft…. not just his pretty face. Sure, it may have been a bit emo, but the pain in his eyes was an undeniable fit to help elevate a character we thought we knew. Who knew that Batman needed a Kurt Cobain vibe? Robert knew. And his Bat voice wasn’t distracting this time. That’s where Pattinson shines; he can control his voice corals like a master, bringing the most exciting and unusual voices –  for example, the English dub of The Boy and the Heron. He continues to push the boundaries of his voice by making a very interesting choice in Bong Joon-ho’s most recent film, Mikey 17. And yeah, even though my cousin says this one is a little too weird, it is a fitting partnership that I hope leads to other thought-provoking pictures.

But does that mean that the glory days of Mr. Pattinson are over? No freaking way. I’m sure this film will be more appreciated as time goes by, and I’m sure Pattinson doesn’t give a  fuck. He is hard at work on his next transformation. He’s teaming up with Nolan again for his take on The Odyssey, a The Batman sequel is on the way and much more to look forward to from Robert Pattinson. His career is a testament to reinvention and rebellion. He defied the industry and took his own independent path to freedom. Balancing arthouse credibly with mainstream appeal. Constantly being reborn as an artist like a real-life Mikey 17… or a pretty vampire. So nobody should give a fuck about what the fuck happened to Robert Pattinson because he is doing just fine.

Weekend Box Office

If you were waiting for the dam to break at the box office, allowing a torrent of dollars to flood a sleepy post-Oscars weekend, prepare to get caught in an undertow of disappointment. After a brief delay, acclaimed South Korean filmmaker Bong Joon Ho returned to theaters this weekend with Mickey 17, a quirky sci-fi epic starring Robert Pattinson that, despite its stumble during its box office debut, dethroned Marvel’s Captain America: Brave New World after three weeks at the top of the charts. While Bong Joon Ho’s Snowpiercer, Okja, and the Best Picture-winning film Parasite are beloved cinematic treats, Mickey 17 only managed $19.1 million in ticket sales during its opening weekend.

Ho’s previous film, Parasite, earned $376,264 during its U.S. theater debut, making its $125,421 per-theater average a 2019 record-setter. At the time of its release, Ho’s unsettling social thriller managed the best per-screen haul since La La Land, an impressive feat for the acclaimed film about twisty class war and symbiotic relationships between two families of opposite means. Mickey 17 is decidedly different because the plot brings Ho back to the science-fiction genre, with bankable stars like Robert Pattinson, Steven Yeun, and Mark Ruffalo leading the bill.

Certainly, an opening under $20 million is a disaster, but one I think we all saw coming. I optimistically predicted a $23 million start, but that wasn’t to be. It’ll be on the foreign grosses now to prevent Mickey 17 from losing a ton of money. It follows Joker: Folie a Deux as a major flop for WB, with several big-budget, risky projects on the horizon like Ryan Coogler’s Sinners (which I think will do well), A Minecraft Movie, and the P.T. Anderson/ Leonardo DiCaprio movie due this summer, which apparently cost a ton (we should finally get a title and trailer at CinemaCon next month).

Mickey 17, box office, Captain America, Brave New World

Captain America: Brave New World managed to hang in there, falling 43% to an $8.5 million weekend, with a total of $176 million domestically. Will it break $200 million domestically? We’ll have to wait and see. Focus Features’s Last Breath made $4.2 million for a $14.6 million total, which isn’t bad for an indie, although Focus certainly gave it a major studio release, on over 3000 screens. Neon’s The Monkey made another $3.9 million for a $31 million total, with it ranking as one of Neon’s biggest hits ever.

Family flicks continued to rake in the dough, with Paddington in Peru making $3.9 million for a $36 million total (it’s made more than any other film in the franchise domestically), while Dog Man made $3.5 million for an $88 million total. Mufasa: The Lion King made $1.7 million in eighth place, with a $250 million total.

Just above it was Best Picture winner Anora, which was re-released and grossed $1.86 million, with a $18.4 million domestic total. The Angel Studios release, Rule Breakers, only did modest business, making $1.59 million. However, In the Lost Lands, the latest from Paul W.S. Anderson, grossed a disastrous $1.04 million, for a per-screen average of $761 dollars. Ouch.

Next week sees the release of Paramount’s buzzy action comedy Novocaine, which should be able to take the top spot at the box office from Mickey 17. However, 2025’s box office doldrums seem likely to continue for another few weeks at least.

Mickey 17

As we predicted earlier this week, Mickey 17, the Robert Pattinson-led sci-fi flick from Parasite director Bong Joon Ho is having a hard time attracting audiences in North America. While the movie was initially looking at an opening in the mid-20s, the outlook for the film has grown grimmer, with Deadline reporting that it’s unlikely to cross the $20 million mark. So far, they have it opening in the $18-19 million range.

Considering that the movie cost north of $118 million, that’s a terrible number, with it looking like it has the makings of being a major flop for Warner Bros. While I enjoyed it, one must admit that it’s more of a cult movie than anything that would ever connect with a mainstream audience. It has a B CinemaScore rating, which is OK (if you consider WB’s last big swing, Joker: Folie a Deux had a D rating), but with an opening number like that, it seems unlikely that the film will cross the $40 million mark.

Hopefully, for all involved, the movie will make up its domestic shortfall with solid international business, such as in Bong Joon Ho’s South Korea. Worse, this continues 2025’s box office woes, with virtually every opener since the holidays underwhelming. Captain America: Brave New World drastically underperformed, while hoped-for sleepers like Flight Risk and Companion weren’t able to pull in much of an audience. Family fare like Dog Man has proven to be more of a bright spot, but by this point last year, we already had Dune: Part Two in theatres, with Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire and Godzilla x Kong both on the horizon. This year, we have Paramount’s Novocaine, as well as the Jason Statham actioner, A Working Man, but both – at best – will be sleeper hits. Disney’s Snow White is the only potential blockbuster, but the word of mouth on that one has been pretty toxic.

Check back tomorrow for our full box office report!

Mickey 17, box office, Bong Joon Ho

After a brief delay, Bong Joon Ho’s latest sci-fi epic, Mickey 17, is finally playing in theaters. The Live, Die, Repeat-like feature is off to a solid start with $2.5M in Thursday preview screenings. Bong Joon Ho is one of South Korea’s premiere filmmakers, having released films like Snowpiercer, The Host, Okja, and the Academy Award-winning psychological drama Parasite. His latest exploration of sci-fi themes stars Robert Pattinson as an “expendable” who goes on a dangerous mission to colonize an ice planet. As Mickey fails one mission attempt after the other, new versions of him try to complete the mission, but when the process goes awry, Mickey finds himself trapped in a deadly paradox. Mickey 17 has a good chance of reaching the top of the box office this weekend, but what’s the breakdown?

Analysts expect Mickey 17 to bank $17M to $20M domestically and $20M to $25M internationally. The combined totals could put Mickey 17 at $40M to $45M for its opening weekend. I hope positive word about the movie spreads because Mickey 17 cost $118M to produce, so it will need $275M to $300M to make a decent amount above its production dollars.

The official synopsis for Mickey 17 reads: “From the Academy Award-winning writer/director of “Parasite,” Bong Joon Ho, comes his next groundbreaking cinematic experience, “Mickey 17.” The unlikely hero, Mickey Barnes (Robert Pattinson) has found himself in the extraordinary circumstance of working for an employer who demands the ultimate commitment to the job… to die, for a living.” In addition to Pattinson as the various Mickeys, the film also stars Steve Yeun, Mark Ruffalo, Toni Collette, and Naomi Ackie. The film is based on the novel Mickey7 by Edward Ashton, with Bong Joon-ho writing the script and directing.

JoBlo’s Editor-in-Chief, Chris Bumbray, reviewed Mickey 17 for the site, saying it’s “uneven” but “undeniably entertaining.” In his review, Chris praises the film’s strong visuals, with Darius Khondji’s cinematography especially impressive if you see this on an IMAX screen. “Indeed, Mickey 17 is all over the place in terms of quality,” Chris said. “It’s one of the few recent films where I went back and forth between thinking it was a disaster and a masterpiece over and over again – sometimes in the same scene, depending on who was being showcased.”

Outlets expect Mickey 17 to take the top spot at the box office this weekend, beating Marvel’s Captain America: Brave New World after several weeks at the box office’s apex.

Mickey 17, release delay

It’s been a pretty grim start to the year as far as the box office goes. Captain America: Brave New World only did modest business (and will be one of the lower-grossing Marvel movies), while films like Den of Thieves 2: Pantera, Flight Risk, One of Them Days, and a few others did quite well, but were only ever designed as modest performers. This weekend is the release of the year’s second big “event” movie – Mickey 17, which marks Bong Joon Ho’s first film since winning an Oscar for Parasite. It’s also Robert Pattinson’s first role since The Batman (although he’s got a busy 2025-26 in-store).

Yet, despite the fact that it cost well over $100 million and has earned great reviews (we mostly enjoyed it), nobody’s expecting the film to do all that much business. Indeed, box office forecasters are predicting a start in the mid-20s, and that’s about what I’m thinking too. I’m thinking Mickey 17 will earn about $23 million. Why isn’t it going to perform better? Likely, it has a lot to do with the film’s satiric, quasi-comic bent. American audiences prefer a more meat-and-potatoes approach to sci-fi, while Bong Joon Ho has a different sensibility. The movie is performing well in South Korea and will likely turn a profit for the studio, but in North America, the film seems destined for more of a cult-style appreciation.

Otherwise, Captain America: Brave New World should hold on to second place with another underwhelming weekend. I expect it to make somewhere in the $7 million range. Last Breath has a chance of hitting third place with about $4 million, while The Monkey shouldn’t be far behind with $3 million, while Paddington in Peru should make in the $2.5 million range. Overall, it seems like a pretty grim weekend if you consider that at this time last year we had Dune: Part Two burning up the box office. Nothing coming out in the next few weeks seems destined to make too much of an impact, so 2025 is off to a bad start.

My Predictions:

  1. Mickey 17: $23 million
  2. Captain America: Brave New World: $7 million
  3. Last Breath: $4 million
  4. The Monkey: $3 million
  5. Paddington in Peru: $2.5 million

Mickey 17 Review: Uneven but undeniably entertaining https://www.joblo.com/mickey-17-review/ https://www.joblo.com/mickey-17-review/#respond Wed, 05 Mar 2025 14:01:21 +0000 https://www.joblo.com/?p=828570 While Bong Joon Ho's film is wildly uneven and has some grating performances, Robert Pattinson is superb in the lead.

The post Mickey 17 Review: Uneven but undeniably entertaining appeared first on JoBlo.

PLOT: In the future, Mickey Barnes (Robert Pattinson), who’s in debt to loan sharks, takes the one job no one could ever possibly want. He signs up to be an “expendable” on an off-world colony where he’s given hazardous tasks to perform that no one is expected to survive. Every time he dies, they “print” another copy of him. However, when his seventeenth iteration, Mickey 17, unexpectedly survives a mission, he discovers another version, Mickey 18, has already been printed, and in this society, multiples are expressly outlawed.

REVIEW: One has to give Warner Bros some degree of credit for green-lighting Mickey 17. Easily the most lavish movie of director Bong Joon-Ho’s career, it’s the kind of original, audacious sci-fi we rarely see on the big screen anymore. The fact that it doesn’t entirely work is almost beside the point, as stuff like this so rarely gets made; the fact that it’s getting released at all feels like some kind of a miracle. However, it also can’t be denied that this uneven, bizarre film seems more likely destined for cult status than mainstream success.

Bong Joon Ho, while undeniably brilliant, has a more mixed record when it comes to English language films than his more acclaimed Korean work. Snowpiercer is a gem, but Okja, for me anyway, was a mess, containing one of the most grating, scenery-chewing performances I’ve ever seen, courtesy of star Jake Gyllenhaal. Bong’s work is never subtle, with Mickey 17 jam-packed with camp performances that, at times, seem like they’re more fun for the actor doing them than the audience watching them.

This is especially true of Mark Ruffalo, whose Kenneth Marshall is presented as a space-bound version of Donald Trump. While WB’s been saying no one is based on any current politician, that’s nonsense, with Ruffalo directly channelling the way he talks and all his adherents wearing red hats. The fact that he’s presented as a genocidal space despot will certainly ruffle some feathers, but one can’t deny the notion to make him such a clear-cut Trump analogue was a deliberate choice. His performance is grating, in the same way Gyllenhaal’s was in Okja, in that I never felt like I was watching anything more than a caricature. Toni Collette fares somewhat better as his even more psychopathic wife, who gleefully collects the tails of the baby aliens discovered on their off-world colony to make “the perfect sauce.”

Mickey 17 review

Yet, as grating as some of the performances can be, Robert Pattinson knocks it out of the park as the various printings of Mickey Barnes. Sounding an awful lot like Steve Buscemi, he delivers a classic semi-comic performance that’s laced with pathos, in the way classic comedians like Buster Keaton and Harold Lloyd (and later Stan Laurel) used to do in another era. His Mickey 17 is none-too-bright but possesses a good heart, which is perfectly contrasted by the edgier, perhaps even psychopathic Mickey 18, whose aggression levels have been taken up a few notches but learns a bit of humanity as the film progresses.

Pattinson’s performance is what makes Mickey 17 work as well as it does, because narratively, the film is something of a mess. Bong Joon Ho’s been tinkering with it in the editing room for a while, and it feels like it’s been cut to the bone (despite running a lengthy 137 minutes). Characters like Steven Yeun’s slimy pilot, Timo, drop in and out, with them barely registering, while Mickey’s love interest, Naomi Ackie’s security agent Nasha, has inexplicable personality shifts, with her coming across as almost insane in certain moments, but then selfless and heroic in others. She nevertheless mostly makes the character work (she’s a terrific actress – with her especially good in the recent Blink Twice), but again, it feels like there’s another version of this movie on a hard drive somewhere where the character makes more sense.

Visually, the film is stunning, with Darius Khondji’s cinematography especially impressive if you see this on an IMAX screen. The production design is terrific, although the insect-style aliens encountered by the various Mickey’s called “Creepers” look as fake as the title character did in Okja

Indeed, Mickey 17 is all over the place in terms of quality. It’s one of the few recent films where I went back and forth between thinking it was a disaster and a masterpiece over and over again – sometimes in the same scene, depending on who was being showcased. Some of it is grating – some of it is superb. It doesn’t really work as a whole, but you know what? I’m glad it exists.

The Batman Part II, Matt Reeves, script

Usually, hit films from established franchises will try to strike while the iron’s hot. Sometimes it doesn’t work out that smoothly. While The Batman from 2022 brought a newer take on the Gotham Detective, the recently rebooted DC Universe is also looking to start its own continuity of the Caped Crusader with Batman: The Brave and the Bold. Robert Pattinson would finally reveal that after many delays, The Batman Part II is aiming to start shooting later this year. Pattinson addressed the film’s delay, saying, “It’s been a while… everything feels so long ago because COVID just erased three years.” When asked if he could reveal any plot details, Pattinson said, “Not yet, it’s cool, though. It’s cool.“

Pattinson and his Mickey 17 co-star Naomi Ackie interview each other for Hero Magazine, where Pattinson jokes about the delay in continuing The Batman franchise. Pattinson starts off by pointing out how audiences seem ready for more arthouse stories, “I don’t know what happened but for the first time in ages, movies that a few years ago would be considered really arthouse, somehow the audience are hearing about them and they’re excited about them. It’s great.” Ackie responds, “It’s amazing. And obviously, you’re Batman – are you going to do Batman again soon?” Then, Pattinson jokes,

I f*cking hope so. [laughs] I started out as young Batman and I’m going to be fucking old Batman by the sequel. [both laugh]”

There have been plenty of rumours swirling about the sequel, including what villains will appear, but we still don’t know much about the film. Reeves teased last year that DC Studios is “super excited” about the film. “It’s going to dig into the epic story about deeper corruption, and it goes into places [Bruce Wayne] couldn’t even anticipate in the first one,” Reeves continued. “The seeds of where this goes are all in the first movie & it expands in a way that will show you aspects of the character you never got to see. Batman is constantly battling these forces. But those forces can’t be entirely exorcised. So the next movie delves deeper into that.” Corruption. Mystery. Batman. I like it. The director also confirmed that “Colin [Farrell] will be part of the movie” as the Penguin.

While the Batman comics (and some of the movies) do include plenty of fantastical characters, Reeves is set on keeping his version of Gotham City more grounded and realistic. “What was important to me was to find a way to take these pop icons, these mythic characters that everybody knows, and translate it so that Gotham feels like a place in our world,” Reeves explained. “We might push to the edge of fantastical, but we would never go into full fantastical. It’s meant to feel quite grounded.“ Reeves still plans on making The Batman into a trilogy. “Yes, that is still the plan,” Reeves said. “I mean, it’s sticking very closely to the path we envisioned.”

The Batman Part II is slated for an October 1, 2027 release.

Robert Pattinson’s demographic has seemingly shifted after his work in movies like Good Time and The Lighthouse. He has also been able to don the cape and cowl and become a new Batman for audiences with a separate continuity in Matt Reeves’ incarnation of The Batman. That movie became a success and fans have been waiting for a follow-up, although Reeves confirms that they are filming this year and are aiming for a 2027 release, “I can tell you that we’re…shooting this year and that we’re excited about it. I can’t really tell you anything about it except that we’re really excited about it.”

Pattinson can be seen in the upcoming Mickey 17 from Parasite director Bong Joon Ho and Variety reports that while Pattinson was on the red carpet, he told the Associated Press how he felt to see the paradigm shift from predominantly female fans from his Twilight days to its current state after starring in The Batman. The star explained,

It’s quite strange. There’s like a bunch of guys, which is a new one for me!”

He also recently spoke about how he still gets grief from people who hold onto disdain for the Twilight movies. He had told GQ Spain, “I love that people keep telling me, ‘Man, Twilight ruined the vampire genre.’” Pattinson then said, “Are you still stuck on that sh*t? How can you be sad about something that happened almost 20 years ago? It’s crazy.” In 2022, Pattinson also admitted to GQ that the movies didn’t turn out quite like he had hoped. The former heartthrob explained, “I wanted to make it as arty as possible. We had this strange tension where the studio was scared to make things a little bit too emo and stuff. I thought that was the only way to play it. I spent so much time [on set] infuriated… I can’t believe the way I was acting half the time.”

Now that The Batman Part II is set to start filming this year, Pattinson addressed the delay, saying, “It’s been a while… everything feels so long ago because COVID just erased three years.” When asked if he could reveal any plot details, Pattinson said, “Not yet, it’s cool, though. It’s cool.“

Mickey 17, first reactions

The release of Bong Joon-ho’s highly anticipated sci-fi movie Mickey 17 has been pushed back multiple times, but it seems the wait will be worth it, as the first reactions on social media are extremely positive. These types of reactions typically are, but I’m inclined to believe that Mickey 17 will be another winner for the director. You can check out the first reactions below!

There were rumblings last year that Warner Bros. wasn’t sure what to do with the film. The frequent delays apparently came down to the studio not wanting to release Joon-ho’s director’s cut but instead put together a “more accessible version.” Thankfully, it seems that Joon-ho got his way in the end. “With Okja and now Mickey 17, I was given the final cut as part of my deal,” he told Empire last year. “The studio respected my final cut rights. Of course, during the editing process there are many opinions and many discussions that happen. But this film is my cut, and I’m very happy about it. It was a long process, but it was always smooth and respectful.

Pattinson knew the film would be something special, but has acknowledged that Boon-ho has a unique directing process. “He’s an unusual guy,” Pattinson said. “Everyone on set was like, ‘What is happening?’ The movies you like most are the ones that feel so impossible at the beginning. It’s such a leap of faith — just sticking the landing is cool.

Mickey 17 will hit theaters on March 7th.

We had this strange tension where the studio was scared to make things a little bit too emo and stuff. I thought that was the only way to play it. I spent so much time [on set] infuriated… I can’t believe the way I was acting half the time.”

When the Twilight director, Catherine Hardwicke, was on Happy Sad Confused back in 2023, she recalled auditioning Pattinson for the role of Edward. Hardwicke recalled, “When he came over to my house, he had black bangs for hair and was kind of out of shape because he was hanging out at the pub all the time.” The studio was not impressed as she explained, “Then I sent it to Summit and he went over to meet them. They called me back and go, ‘Do you think you can make this guy look good?’ I said, ‘Yeah, I do. Did you see his cheekbones? We’re doing a makeover on the hair and everything and he’s going to start working out and he’s going to be gorgeous.’ But they didn’t believe it at first. He like walked over there with a stained shirt or something. It was Rob.”

“Not a single one of my films has ever been released without some change in its release date,” Parasite director Bong Joon Ho told Screen Daily earlier this month, and it appears his latest off-the-wall feature, Mickey 17, is no different. After getting delayed several times, Mickey 17 comes to theaters on April 18, 2025, but not before the film’s latest trailer teases the sci-fi adventure to come.

The official synopsis for Mickey 17 reads: “From the Academy Award-winning writer/director of “Parasite,” Bong Joon Ho, comes his next groundbreaking cinematic experience, “Mickey 17.” The unlikely hero, Mickey Barnes (Robert Pattinson) has found himself in the extraordinary circumstance of working for an employer who demands the ultimate commitment to the job… to die, for a living.” In addition to Robert Pattinson as the various Mickeys, the film also stars Steve Yeun, Mark Ruffalo, Toni Collette, and Naomi Ackie. It is based on the novel Mickey7 by Edward Ashton, with Bong Joon-ho writing the script and directing.

Today’s Mickey 17 trailer finds Robert Pattinson doing some vocal gymnastics to give his character a unique voice. With a folksy cadence, Mickey applies to become an “Expendable.” However, he fails to read the fine print and soon gets reprinted to perform one dangerous task after the next. When Mickey discovers two versions of himself are running rampant, he needs to decide which one will stay while the other must go. Unfortunately for Mickey, the people in charge of the reprints are also aware of the error and won’t hesitate to delete one or the other Mickey without prejudice.

Just last month, the MPA Classification and Rating Administration gave Mickey 17 an R-rating for “violent content, language throughout, sexual content and drug material.” We catch a little of this in today’s trailer, as Mickey meets his end in several gruesome accidents ranging from getting limbs sliced off by space debris and getting devoured by space aliens.

I’m excited about this one. I’ve been on a science-fiction kick lately after catching up with Silo on Apple TV+ and starting my first watch of The Expanse. I adore Bong Joon Ho’s warped mind and can’t wait to see what he’s cooking with Mickey 17.

2025 Movie Preview

With 2024 coming to a close, it’s time to start looking to the future for our cinema needs. What does the year hold in store for us cinephiles? While 2024 held some surprise hits, giant blockbusters, and small films that could, it’s looking like 2025 movie releases will hold more of the same. We can hope that the good fortune that Hollywood has brought us will continue into the new year and keep theater attendance up. Here’s our 2025 Movie Preview:

Den of Thieves: Pantera

Den Of Thieves: Pantera – January 10

Gerard Butler is back chasing down diamond thieves on the streets of Europe. He stumbles across the planning of the largest diamond heist ever planned. If you liked the first movie, then this will probably be more of the same. I’m personally happy that Gerard Butler is making some fun B-movie action films like back in the day. Plane was fun, and I’m excited to see these types of films at the theater again.

better man

Better Man – January 10

A biopic about UK pop star Robbie Williams as we see his childhood all the way through his superstardom. Robbie will be playing himself, but how do you do that without it being weird? What if you make it so he’s a chimp? Sure. With Pharrell releasing his biopic as a Lego movie and now Robbie Williams replacing himself with a CGI chimp it seems biopics are really trying to gain quirk appeal.

Back in Action, release, Netflix, Jamie Foxx, Cameron Diax, first-look images

Back In Action – January 17

Cameron Diaz is coming out of retirement and teaming up with Jamie Foxx for this Netflix original film. They play former CIA agents who are pulled back in when their identities are exposed. While I’m glad to see Diaz back on screen after a decade away, it’s odd that this generic spy action movie did it. Maybe just the idea of being in a movie with Jamie Foxx again was enough.

Michelle Yeoh, Star Trek: Section 31, first look

Star Trek: Section 31 – January 24

This direct to Paramount+ film is a spin off from Star Trek: Discovery starring Michelle Yeoh as her character Philippa Georgiou. This was originally planned as a series, but after COVID-19 delays, it was scrapped. Later they revived the idea for an original movie. Star Trek has always been a beloved franchise but with new movies going direct to streaming, will we ever see them return to the big screen?

bridget jones, isla fisher, jim broadbent, nico parker

Bridget Jones: Mad About The Boy – February 13

For the first time in nine years, Bridget Jones is back! Only this time, it will be on Peacock in the United States and then in theaters everywhere else in the world. Seems backwards but okay. Bridget Jones is now a single mom and trying to figure out how that works when you’re trying to get back into the dating pool. Renee Zellweger and Hugh Grant return, along with some other familiar faces. Are we past the Bridget Jones fandom, or is there still more life in this franchise?

Captain America: Brave New World, Red Hulk

Captain America: Brave New World – February 14

After the events of Falcon And The Winter Soldier, Anthony Mackie is donning the shield as the new Captain America. Harrison Ford steps in for the late William Hurt as the new President Ross, who has a big red secret to share. Marvel only had one release last summer, and it seemed to work really well for them. Let’s see if something without Hugh Jackman’s claws still registers for Marvel fans.

2025 Movie Preview

Mickey 17 – March 7

The new film from Bong Joon-ho sees Robert Pattinson sent on a space mission because he is seen as expendable. With technology, he can be regenerated if something goes wrong. This time, something goes wrong, and he begins to experience an existential crisis. This darkly comedic film looks like a good time as we see Mickey die in numerous different ways and still have to get up to go to work the next day.

black bag

Black Bag – March 14

Steven Soderberg’s spy thriller is coming out with no details on the plot. With a cast that includes Michael Fassbender, Cate Blanchett, and Pierce Brosnan, you can bet lots of people will be interested in checking it out. Soderberg has always had an interesting take on just about any film he releases, and this will be no different.

Snow White

Snow White – March 21

Disney continues its trend of doing live-action remakes of its old animated films. This one caused a stir when it was announced, as people seemed divided on how to handle the seven dwarfs aspect of the film. Ultimately, the dwarves will be completely CGI. It will be interesting to see how this plays in a modern culture. Expect some new songs, and Gal Gadot will be playing the evil queen, which is inspired casting compared to the look of the original character.

2025 Movie Preview

A Minecraft Movie – April 4

With Super Mario Bros. and the Sonic movies being big hits, it’s no surprise that the hugely popular game Minecraft would be getting its own movie. Jack Black once again jumps on board to play Steve, the generic character most players take control of when booting up Minecraft. Jason Mamoa, Jennifer Coolidge, and Kate McKinnon round out the cast as random characters are pulled into the cubic world and need the help of an expert crafter to get home. Seems very Jumanji.

The Accountant 2, release date

The Accountant 2 – April 25

I don’t think anyone saw this sequel coming. In the first film, Ben Affleck played a neuro-divergent accountant who had a side job as a hitman. The film was a modest hit but nothing that would seem to warrant a sequel. Some other familiar faces from the first one return.

Thunderbolts*

Thunderbolts* – May 2

The second of Marvel’s offerings this year sees a bunch of cast-off characters from previous Marvel films being rounded up for a new agency. Yelena will be leading the team of previous supervillains who are now taking jobs for the government. Of course, this will be complicated by a lot of in-fighting and some unexpected speedbumps. The trailer makes this look like a lot of fun so here’s hoping it will give MCU fans some laughs while providing some great action scenes.

2025 Movie Preview

Lilo & Stitch – May 23

This is the second of Disney’s live-action remakes. Stitch crash-lands on Earth and is adopted by a young girl. Hijinks ensue as others come looking for him. The original had a great sense of humor, and the trailers showing Stitch invading other Disney properties were great. I have no idea if this will translate well into live-action, but kids will probably love it.

mission impossible

Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning – May 23

This was originally titled Dead Reckoning Part II, but after the last film underperformed, the title was quickly changed. It will continue the storyline from the last film, and we see Ethan Hunt trying to stop the deadly AI from causing worldwide chaos. Of course in order to shut it down, they have to make their way to the submarine that is crashed on the ocean floor.

Karate Kid: Legends

Karate Kid: Legends – May 30

The franchise returns to the big screen as we see Daniel from the original and Mr. Han from the 2010 “remake” join forces to mentor a new student. It’s a strange crossing of the streams which retcons the remake into being set in the same continuity. With Cobra Kai just ending when this hits theaters, will fans even care enough to go check it out? Fans of the original movie got their nostalgia fix with the series. Are there people who have nostalgia for the 2010 movie?

Ballerina

From The World Of John Wick: Ballerina – June 6

The spin-off of the John Wick films hits the big screen. We were introduced to the Ballerinas in John Wick 3. Now they get a film all their own while Keanu Reeves will still make an appearance since this is set during that time period. Ana de Armas takes over the role of Eve as she looks to get revenge on the people who killed her family. The intricate world of John Wick is fascinating to explore, and this gives us a chance to see even more of it.

2025 Movie Preview

Elio – June 13

An animated film from Disney that follows Elio. He’s a young space fanatic who gets tasked with saving the universe. They have been struggling to come up with animated films that really stick with audiences that aren’t already established Pixar properties. The shine of the early Pixar films has really dimmed after Disney bought them. Hopefully we can see Disney regain its footing with animated films like we used to have.

How to Train Your Dragon

How To Train Your Dragon – June 13

Dreamworks seems to be taking a cue from Disney and remaking some of their more popular animated properties. We’re getting another round of dragons as we see the first meeting of Hiccup and Toothless. Again. Not sure if this trend will ever end, but at least Dreamworks doesn’t have as deep of a catalog as Disney. When can we expect to see a live-action Kung Fu Panda?

Jurassic World Rebirth, Jurassic Park

Jurassic World: Rebirth – July 2

Scarlett Johanssen is taking the lead role this time around. No one seems to have learned any lesson about bringing dinosaurs back to life. This time it looks like explorers have to go in to get DNA samples from some prehistoric animals to help cure a disease. Universal really just wants to see if there is any juice left to squeeze out of this fruit. It may be time to let it sleep for a few decades before heading back in.

Superman

Superman – July 11

James Gunn takes his stab at the Man of Steel as the DC Universe reboots itself on-screen once again. Reports are that Gunn held an early screening for WB execs and that it did not go well. That could be internet fodder, but it doesn’t instill a lot of hope for the new version of the DCU. With the DC shows on the CW just wrapping up, we’ll have to see if Gunn’s Superman will connect with comic fans. The recent trailer seemed to gain a lot of views very quickly, so we at least know that fans are interested.

The Smurfs

The Smurfs Movie – July 18

Those magical little blue creatures will grace theater screens once again. This time, the film will be fully animated and musical. Paramount/Nickelodeon will take on the film, and it seems to be inspired by the popularity of the Troll movies. Rhianna will voice Smurfette and be joined by Nick Offerman, John Goodman, Kurt Russell, Dan Levy, and Hannah Waddingham.

fantastic four first steps

The Fantastic Four: First Steps – July 25

Marvel’s first family finally makes their way into the MCU. While they have been on-screen before as part of Fox’s Marvel movies, this time, we’ll see what the MCU has in store for the group. Marvel’s third film in six months will really test if audiences are in superhero fatigue or not. The early footage shown at Comicon seems fun, so hopefully, it will bring something new.

Liam Neeson, The Naked Gun remake

Naked Gun – August 1

Liam Neeson is hoping to try something drastically different than we’ve seen from him before. He has some big shoes to fill, as Leslie Nielsen based the whole second half of his career on the original Naked Gun. It will be hard to see anyone else trying to play that role. Plus, does that type of comedy have a place anymore?

Freakier Friday

Freakier Friday – August 8

Disney’s calendar of releases this year is crazy, as we see the reteaming of Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan. The last film was a remake of an old Disney Classic. Now, twenty-one years later, we are getting a sequel. Expect more body-swapping jokes as the Lindsay Lohan resurgence seems to be taking shape. She’s been on an upswing lately, and hopefully, we can see her get a victory lap as she has matured.

Nobody

Nobody 2 – August 15

Somehow, Bob Odenkirk became an action star after starring in Nobody back in 2021. Now, we get to see some more middle-aged dad action as he returns for this sequel. The first movie really worked to show what appears to be an ordinary man who decides to get back into a life he left a long time ago. Now that we have seen him for what he really is, here’s hoping for more action and more Christopher Lloyd running around with a shotgun.

Downton Abbey a new era review

Downton Abbey 3 – September 12

The third film spin-off of the popular period drama. Many of the cast return to once again play their characters, showing the divide between the upper class and the working class. This drama captivated audiences when it first premiered, and both previous films have been big hits. It only makes sense to keep it going with another film.

Tron Ares

Tron: Ares – October 10

We’re traveling back into the world of Tron. Jeff Bridges is back, along with a slew of other familiar faces like Jodie Turner-Smith, Evan Peters, and Jared Leto. This time, a program is sent from the digital world to the real world. Each Tron film so far has pushed the boundaries in terms of special effects and technical marvels. Let’s see what they come up with this time.

Mortal Kombat

Mortal Kombat 2 – October 24

We’re heading back to the arcade, so get your quarters ready. The reboot of the Mortal Kombat franchise continues as our heroes are heading back to Outland to continue the fight for all existence. The last film was released during the pandemic, so a true gauge of the popularity is hard to judge, but audiences seem to have a positive response. During the initial film franchise run, the second entry pushed it off a cliff. We can hope they learned their lesson.

Now You See Me 3, release

Now You See Me 3 – November 14

Another entry into the magic mystery franchise is in the pipeline. All of our sleight-of-hand artists are returning, but no plot has been released so far. The previous movies have gained an audience through their unique use of stage magic and illusions to foil their adversaries. It is a fun and interesting way of doing a mystery based action film. If it lives up to the previous entries, then audiences should leave the theater happy.

Wicked: Part Two, Wicked: For Good

Wicked: For Good – November 21

The second part of the recent smash hit. Those who haven’t seen the Broadway play or read the book will get to see how the story ends. I expect more fantastic songs, some great visuals, and more Oz. We all need all the Oz we can get. Let’s all get ready to defy gravity once again.

2025 Movie Preview

Zootopia 2 – November 26

Disney has quite the release schedule this year, and we’re not even done yet. Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde are teaming up to solve a wild case that could change their entire lives. It will be fun to travel back into the world of Zootopia and see where the characters are. It looks like more of the same fun we had in the last film.

Zoe Saldaña, Avatar: Fire and Ash

Avatar: Fire And Ash – December 19

It’s time to head back to Pandora. Last time James Cameron dealt with water motifs and explored more of the world. Looks like we’ll be dealing with fire this time around. While the films seem to always be a wonder of motion capture and CGI, it would be great to see Cameron go back to other projects before his film career comes to an end. We can always hope.

Spongebob Squarepants

The SpongeBob Movie: Search For SquarePants – December 19

Hey Kids! SpongeBob is back with another movie. This time, he will explore the depths of the ocean to deal with the ghost of the Flying Dutchman. This franchise just keeps engaging generation after generation. At this point, The Simpsons might be about the only animated franchise that has lasted longer. As long as fans keep checking out the movies, the more they will keep making.

Unfortunately, we’ll have to wait a little longer to see Bong Joon-ho’s highly anticipated sci-fi movie Mickey 17, as Warner Bros. has pushed the release date back by three months. Mickey 17 was previously slated to hit theaters on January 31, 2025, but the film has been given a new release date of April 18, 2025, filling the slot previously held by Antoine Fuqua’s Michael Jackson biopic.

This shift will also allow the film to screen in IMAX. “When the April 18 date became available, we quickly moved to secure it for Mikey 17. We’re thrilled with the new date, and very happy the film will be available to audiences in Imax,” said a Warner Bros. spokesperson, “With January 31 now available with a full Imax footprint, we are also very happy to have Companion releasing on this new date.

Just last month, the MPA Classification and Rating Administration gave Mickey 17 an R-rating for “violent content, language throughout, sexual content and drug material.” We caught a little of this in the trailer for the film, as Mickey met his end in several gruesome accidents ranging from getting limbs sliced off by space debris and being devoured by space aliens.

I’m pretty excited about the film, but there have been rumblings that Warner Bros. wasn’t quite sure what to make of it. Mickey 17 was originally supposed to be released back in March, but it wound up being taken off the schedule entirely before making the shift to 2025. Some have claimed that the reason for the delay is that the studio won’t let Bong Joon-ho release his director’s cut, but instead want to release a “more accessible” version of the movie.

Industry scooper Daniel Richtman heard a rumor that director Bong Joon-ho and Warner Bros. are disagreeing over the sci-fi thriller Mickey 17

The trailer for Bong Joon-ho’s quirky dark comedy, Mickey 17, dropped a couple of weeks ago and people have already taken to Robert Pattinson‘s unique performance coupled with Bong’s direction. Mickey 17 was originally supposed to be released back in March, but it wound up being taken off the schedule entirely before making the shift to 2025. Some have said that the reason for the delay is that the studio won’t let Bong Joon-ho release his director’s cut but instead want to release a “more accessible” version of the movie.

Now that the film finally has its release date set in place, the MPA Classification and Rating Administration has given Mickey 17 an R-rating “for violent content, language throughout, sexual content and drug material.” With the nature of the film containing multiple deaths of the main character, it’s natural to assume Bong gets to play around Groundhog Day-style with a bevy of scenarios that kill off his “expendable” lead.

The official synopsis for Mickey 17 reads: “From the Academy Award-winning writer/director of Parasite, Bong Joon Ho, comes his next groundbreaking cinematic experience, Mickey 17. The unlikely hero, Mickey Barnes (Robert Pattinson) has found himself in the extraordinary circumstance of working for an employer who demands the ultimate commitment to the job… to die, for a living.“

In addition to Pattinson as the various Mickeys, the film also stars Steve Yeun, Mark Ruffalo, Toni Collette, and Naomi Ackie. It is based on the novel Mickey7 by Edward Ashton, with Bong Joon-ho writing the script and directing. This sci-fi thriller is the first film Bong has made since his 2019 film Parasite won Best Picture and he won the Best Director and Best Original Screenplay Academy Awards. It’s based on a novel by Edward Ashton that was called Mickey7, but they changed the number for the title of the adaptation.

Bong wrote, directed, and produced Mickey 17 for his production company Offscreen, along with Kate Street Picture Company’s Dooho Choi and Plan B’s Dede Gardner and Jeremy Kleiner, part of the latter’s overall deal with Warner Bros.

Mickey 17 is set to hit theaters on January 31, 2025.

We don’t often get trailers so late in the day, but I’ll make an exception for Bong Joon-ho’s highly anticipated sci-fi movie Mickey 17. The darkly comedic trailer gets off to a great start with Mickey, played by Robert Pattinson, getting his hand gruesomely sliced off by a piece of space debris. From then on, Mickey dies again and again and again. Everything from industrial accidents to being devoured by space aliens. However, when multiple versions end up alive at the same time (a big no-no apparently), all hell breaks loose.

The official synopsis for Mickey 17 reads: “From the Academy Award-winning writer/director of “Parasite,” Bong Joon Ho, comes his next groundbreaking cinematic experience, “Mickey 17.” The unlikely hero, Mickey Barnes (Robert Pattinson) has found himself in the extraordinary circumstance of working for an employer who demands the ultimate commitment to the job… to die, for a living.

A wacky Robert Pattinson. Bong Joon-ho. Some sci-fi. I’m a fan, but there have been some rumblings that Warner Bros. isn’t quite sure what to make of the film. Mickey 17

At one time, Warner Bros. was planning to give director Bong Joon-ho’s sci-fi thriller Mickey 17 a theatrical release on March 29th, 2024 – but then they bounced the movie to January of 2025 and released Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire on March 29th instead. Why the delay? According to industry scooper Daniel Richtman, it’s rumored that Joon-ho and Warner Bros. are at odds over the director’s cut. Richtman wrote, “I hear Mickey 17 is delayed because Warner Bros. won’t let Bong Joon-ho release his director’s cut. They want to release a more ‘accessible’ version.

This may not be surprising for CinemaCon attendees to hear. A trailer for Mickey 17 was shown at Cinema Con earlier this year (we have the report HERE) and some who saw the footage felt that the movie “could either be totally amazing or a complete disaster.”

Here’s a plot synopsis for Mickey 17Whenever there’s a mission that’s too dangerous—even suicidal—the crew turns to Mickey. After one iteration dies, a new body is regenerated with most of his memories intact. After six deaths, Mickey7 understands the terms of his deal…and why it was the only colonial position unfilled when he took it.

The film stars Robert Pattinson, Steven Yeun, Toni Collette, Naomi Ackie, and Mark Ruffalo.

The novel Mickey7 (which you can purchase at THIS LINK) has the following description: Dying isn’t any fun… but at least it’s a living. Mickey7 is an Expendable: a disposable employee on a human expedition sent to colonize the ice world Niflheim. Whenever there’s a mission that’s too dangerous―even suicidal―the crew turns to Mickey. After one iteration dies, a new body is regenerated with most of his memories intact. After six deaths, Mickey7 understands the terms of his deal… and why it was the only colonial position unfilled when he took it. On a fairly routine scouting mission, Mickey7 goes missing and is presumed dead. By the time he returns to the colony base, surprisingly helped back by native life, Mickey7’s fate has been sealed. There’s a new clone, Mickey8, reporting for Expendable duties. The idea of duplicate Expendables is universally loathed, and if caught, they will likely be thrown into the recycler for protein. Mickey7 must keep his double a secret from the rest of the colony. Meanwhile, life on Niflheim is getting worse. The atmosphere is unsuitable for humans, food is in short supply, and terraforming is going poorly. The native species are growing curious about their new neighbors, and that curiosity has Commander Marshall very afraid. Ultimately, the survival of both lifeforms will come down to Mickey7. That is, if he can just keep from dying for good.

Bong wrote, directed, and produced Mickey 17 for his production company Offscreen, along with Kate Street Picture Company’s Dooho Choi and Plan B’s Dede Gardner and Jeremy Kleiner, part of the latter’s overall deal with Warner Bros.

During the Warner Bros. panel at CinemaCon, Robert Pattinson (The BatmanThe Lighthouse) and director Bong Joon-Ho (ParasiteOkja) shared a trailer and new details about their upcoming science-fiction drama Mickey 17.

Robert Pattinson and Bong Joon-ho took the CinemaCon stage, giving the impression they’re proud of the movie they’ve made. Mickey 17 is based on the novel Mickey 7, but they changed it to 17 because that’s the number of times Pattinson’s character dies in the film.

Here’s a plot synopsis for Mickey 17: “Whenever there’s a mission that’s too dangerous—even suicidal—the crew turns to Mickey. After one iteration dies, a new body is regenerated with most of his memories intact. After six deaths, Mickey7 understands the terms of his deal…and why it was the only colonial position unfilled when he took it.” In addition to Pattinson, Mickey 17 has a wealth of other talents on board, including Steven Yeun, Tony Collette, Naomi Ackie, and Mark Ruffalo.

JoBlo’s editor-in-chief, Chris Bumbray, says the Mickey 17 trailer is very comedic, scored by “Ain’t that a Kick in the Head” by Dean Martin and Nelson Riddle. Pattinson plays a guy who applies to work on a space station as an expendable. When he dies, a new “human printing” is fabricated, constantly being sent one suicide job and being reborn. Multiple versions end up alive at the same time and are hunted, as you cannot have more than one alive at the same time. It’s a buddy movie with multiple Mickeys and Pattinsons. Mickey 17 will get an IMAX release.

Addressing the CinemaCon crowd, Pattinson said Bong Joon-ho is a hero to him. Pattinson says making Mickey 17 is one of the funniest, weirdest sci-fi scripts ever, which made it a no-brainer. Pattinson says that because the movie doesn’t use hair or makeup or a different accent to change the Mickeys from each other. The human printings had to be the same. But, the film revolves around Mickey 17 meeting Mickey 18, who has frontal lobe damage and no impulse control.

Meanwhile, Mark Ruffalo is the villain, a dictator. Toni Collette plays his wife. Naomi Ackie plays Mickey’s girlfriend. Steven Yeun plays “another crazy guy” in the movie, who is also Mickey’s buddy. The film is described as a “big, bold, original swing.”

Mickey 17, Robert Pattinson, Bong Joon-ho, release date

Mickey 17, the upcoming project from Bong Joon-ho, has reportedly been moved to January of next year, marking a rather curious release date for such a high-profile project, especially considering it will be the long-awaited follow-up to the director’s Best Picture winner Parasite.

Originally, Mickey 17 was slated for a March 29th, 2024 release date but was moved back once it was announced last month that Warner Bros. – who is also distributing Mickey 17 – would be putting out Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire on that date. While a studio directly clashing with itself wouldn’t make sense, that Warner Bros. has moved the movie so far back definitely feels like cause for concern. Added to that, January is typically seen as a dumping ground for movies, a place to toss the leftovers that never had any awards potential to begin with.

The plot of Mickey 17: “Whenever there’s a mission that’s too dangerous—even suicidal—the crew turns to Mickey.

Bong Joon-ho’s Parasite would be nominated for six Academy Awards, taking home four: the aforementioned top honor, Best Editing, Best International Feature, and Best Director, marking one of the few times an Asian filmmaker has taken home that trophy. But it’s extremely unlikely now that Bong Joon-ho will be headed to the Oscars again – not because we expect Mickey 17 to be a bad movie but because movies released in the first months of the year rarely have the legs to make it through awards season. Just for reference, Parasite premiered at May’s Cannes Film Festival, itself giving the movie a leg up as far as prestige.

With this release date shift, the gap between Parasite and Mickey 17 will be the largest between any Bong Joon-ho films, as it will be just under six years between the two.

Are you concerned for Mickey 17 over its new release date? Will you still catch it in theaters next year? Let us know below.

Godzilla x Kong, release

Bong Joon-ho’s highly anticipated sci-fi movie Mickey 17 starring Robert Pattinson was originally slated to hit theaters this March, but Warner Bros. has pulled the film from the schedule. However, the release date was quickly filled by Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, with the MonsterVerse sequel jumping from April 12th to March 29th.

According to Deadline, the reason for Mickey 17‘s change is “due to shifts in production amidst last year’s strikes,” but a new release date should be announced soon. The new release date for Godzilla x Kong gives the film little competition, although it will hit theaters just a week after the release of Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire.

Godzilla vs Kong director Adam Wingard has returned to helm the new sequel from a screenplay by Simon Barrett. The film features a returning cast led by Rebecca Hall as Dr. Ilene Andrews, Brian Tyree Henry as Bernie Hayes, and Kaylee Hottle as Jia. New additions to the sequel include Dan Stevens, Fala Chen, and Rachel House.

This latest entry follows up the explosive showdown of Godzilla vs. Kong with an all-new cinematic adventure, pitting the almighty Kong and the fearsome Godzilla against a colossal undiscovered threat hidden within our world, challenging their very existence – and our own,” reads the official synopsis. “The epic new film will delve further into the histories of these Titans, their origins and the mysteries of Skull Island and beyond, while uncovering the mythic battle that helped forge these extraordinary beings and tied them to humankind forever.

While fans wait for the release of Godzilla x Kong, they’ve got Monarch: Legacy of Monsters to enjoy. The Apple TV+ series debuted last month and spans three generations as it reveals buried secrets and the ways that epic, earth-shattering events can reverberate through our lives. You can check out a review of the series from our own Alex Maidy right here.

Plot details for Mickey 17 have largely been kept under wraps, but the novel follows Mickey7, who is an Expendable: a disposable employee on a human expedition sent to colonize the ice world Niflheim. “Whenever there’s a mission that’s too dangerous—even suicidal—the crew turns to Mickey,” reads a description. “After one iteration dies, a new body is regenerated with most of his memories intact. Robert Pattinson, potatoes

Actors, particularly those playing superheroes, face immense pressure to look a certain way, and Robert Pattinson is done with it. While speaking with ES Magazine, Robert Pattinson trashed the “insidious” body standards men face in Hollywood, before revealing that he once ate nothing but potatoes for two weeks.

Yeah, it’s crazy,” Pattinson said. “And it’s very, very easy to fall into that pattern as well, even if you’re just watching your calorie intake, it’s extraordinarily addictive — and you don’t quite realise how insidious it is until it’s too late.” While Robert Pattinson said that he’s never struggled with body image himself, he has tried his share of questionable weight-loss methods, including eating nothing but potatoes “I have basically tried every fad you can think of, everything except consistency,” the actor added. “I once ate nothing but potatoes for two weeks, as a detox. Just boiled potatoes and Himalayan pink salt. Apparently it’s a cleanse… you definitely lose weight. And I tried to do keto once. I was like, ‘Oh, there’s a diet where you just eat charcuterie boards and cheese all the time?’ But I didn’t realise that you can’t have beer as it completely defeats the purpose.” I do love potatoes in all their forms but… that’s a bit much.

After being cast as Batman, Robert Pattinson famously said that he was barely doing anything to get into shape, which he later said “came back to haunt me” in an interview with MovieMaker. Pattinson told ES that he “got in so much trouble for saying that I don’t work out, even from my trainer, who was like, ‘Why would you say that?’

Robert Pattinson is in the middle of shooting Mickey 17, a new film by Parasite director Bong Joon-ho. Based on the novel by Edward Ashton, the film finds Pattinson playing a disposable employee on a space expedition. When one iteration dies, a new body is regenerated with most of his memories intact. “It’s with Parasite director Bong Joon-ho and it’s like nothing I’ve ever done before,” Pattinson said. “The movie is so crazy, it’s a completely different style of working.” In addition to Robert Pattinson, Mickey 17 also stars Steven Yeun (Minari), Naomi Ackie (Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker), Toni Collette (Hereditary), and Mark Ruffalo (Avengers: Endgame). The movie is being directed, written, and produced by Bong Joon-ho. Mickey 17 is slated to hit theaters on March 29, 2024.
