Snow White was poisoned from the start. From the casting of Latina Rachel Zegler in the title role to the handling of the dwarf characters to the openly publicized political stances of its stars to the sheer existence of Gal Gadot, there was just no chance for it. As such, it has only taken in around $70 million domestically on a budget pegged upwards of $270 million. But forget the box office — moviegoers hate it! At least, those who claim they saw it do…

As it stands, Disney’s 2025 reimagining of beloved animated classic Snow White holds a 1.6/10 on IMDb based on 311,000 reviews…and 91% are one-star ratings. (The 2.7% of 10-star reviews are clearly from people who didn’t see it, either…) This looks to be an obvious case of review-bombing, which always hits a movie that has some sort of controversy heading into the release. It had even been so hazed that it was temporarily on the list of lowest-rated movies on the site, sitting alongside the likes of Manos: The Hands of Fate, Birdemic: Shock and Terror and Baby Geniuses 2. It has since been removed.

As a result, IMDb has issued a unique warning for Snow White which indicates “unusual activity”, point to “Our rating mechanism has detected unusual voting activity on this title.” Just for context, Kirk Cameron’s Saving Christmas holds no such disclaimer…

Movie fans — or at least those who claim to be — have no problem hitting review sites and forums with their opinions. And while there’s nothing wrong with that and it’s obviously encouraged if constructive, it’s those users who take it too far (as in the case of Snow White and IMDb) that don’t really serve a function other than to troll. We’ve seen it so many times before on various platforms but it really says something when one has to start issuing alerts. But will any others follow suit? Or is this just a futile gesture on their part?

How do you feel about IMDb’s disclaimer for Snow White? Could this in any way deter trolls from review-bombing?

Weekend Box Office: Jason Statham knocks out Snow White, Blumhouse and more https://www.joblo.com/jason-statham-knocks-out-snow-white/ https://www.joblo.com/jason-statham-knocks-out-snow-white/#respond Sun, 30 Mar 2025 15:27:49 +0000 https://www.joblo.com/?p=833007 Jason Statham’s latest action flick, A Working Man, topped Snow White and more at the box office this weekend.

Magic mirror on the wall, who’s the fairest of them all? Jason Statham, evidently, as his latest action flick, A Working Man, has topped the weekend box office, poisoning the apple of Snow White, which continued its disappointing run by dropping to the number two spot.

A Working Man once again proved that Jason Statham’s fanbase is a continuously loyal one, as the movie – which reunites him with The Beekeeper director David Ayer – earned $15.2 million in its debut weekend, a chisel in its $40 million budget. For a movie that banks on Statham himself (and not an established franchise like Fast and the Furious), that’s pretty good, landing in The Beekeeper territory.

weekend box office 02

Now onto Snow White, which opened last week with just $47 million. The live-action (well, mostly) remake of the Disney classic was bound to fall but we didn’t expect it to do so in such embarrassing fashion, as it slipped nearly 70%. While that still put it as the weekend’s runner-up, it only took in another $14.2 million. For a movie that has a budget pegged upwards of $270 million, this is easily one of the biggest red marks for Disney. Hopefully this will make them reconsider their desire to remake their animated classics (although a lot are still on the calendar)…or at least convince Hollywood to stop casting Gal Gadot.

The rest of the box office was far less dramatic, although a curious choice came in at #3: The Chosen: The Last Supper ($11.5 million), which is actually part of an Amazon MGM Studios deal that sees the fifth season of the faith-based series getting a theatrical release before hitting Amazon. It’s an interesting strategy that is evidently paying off, pulling solid numbers for a movie that has a niche audience.

Blumhouse’s The Woman in the Yard snuck through the gate with $9.4 million. That single-digital number isn’t all that far from the movie’s $12 million budget, although the studio’s non-franchise fare usually at least opens in the doubles. Failing to sparkle was Death of a Unicorn, which poked its way into the top 5 with $5.8 million. You’d think that a movie starring Paul Rudd and Jenna Ortega would have fared far better at the box office but with mid reviews, an R rating and nothing really to grab an audience outside of the cast, it just didn’t have the magic to land.

weekend box office 03

One delight that made the top 10 was Hayao Miyazaki’s Princess Mononoke, now out courtesy of a 4K transfer. No doubt IMAX screens helped boost it to $3.5 million, but I’d also like to think those who were disgusted by OpenAI’s Studio Ghibli-inspired feature headed to the theater as a move of support. And considering its initial domestic run back in 1999 only saw it in 129 theaters, we’re calling this a win all around. Right behind it was Captain America: Brave New World, which, with another $2.75 million to its name, still stands as the highest-grossing movie of 2025 so far.

Meanwhile, Steven Soderbergh’s Black Bag is trying to nudge towards $20 million domestically with its $2.15 million this weekend. Soderbergh isn’t normally a splash at the box office but his movies are almost always worth seeing so good on him for hanging in the top 10 (even if Black Bag won’t recoup its budget, not even earning back half of it on the domestic front). The number nine and 10 spots would go to Bong Joon Ho’s Mickey 17 and the Jack Quaid action flick Novocaine, which is a lot of fun and well worth checking out. Mickey 17 took in $2 with a, while Novocaine earned $1.45 million in its third week. That might seem numb, but considering it has already recouped its budget, any extra bucks are welcome.

As it happens, Chris Bumbray’s box office predictions for this week’s totals underestimated Jason Statham’s ability to put in work. Our editor-in-chief, Chris Bumbray, thought Snow White would retain its top spot, but David Ayer and Jason Statham’s A Working Man hammered its way to the top of the list with a $15.2M debut over Snow White‘s $14.2M. Ah, well. Even a broken clock is right twice a day, right?

Next week will no doubt find a new champ at the box office, as A Minecraft Movie is looking to be a real blockbuster, proving to do well with advanced ticket sales ahead of its release. Other new titles include Lionsgate’s Pedro Pascal-starring Freaky Tales, horror-comedy Hell of a Summer (which is Finn Wolfhard’s co-directorial debut), The Luckiest Man in America (about the infamous Press Your Luck scandal) and Eric Laure (Michael Shannon’s own directorial debut). Mid-week, Screamboat – the latest horror movie taking advantage of copyright lapses – will also open.

What did you catch at the movies this weekend?

Weekend Box Office

Disney’s live action remake of Snow White was never going to open to boffo box office. The toxic early buzz and poor tracking suggested that the Mouse House was fighting an uphill battle with this one, but given how well their live-action remakes did in the past, no one expected the film to open to less than $50 million – including us. That number was seen by some as a worst-case scenario, considering the $270 million price tag.

However, Deadline is now reporting that the movie is opening far worse than anyone expected, with a $43 million weekend, which is even less than the flop remake of Dumbo (which cost half of what Snow White did) made. Unless the box office picks up notably in the next few weeks (similar to what happened with Mufasa: The Lion King), Disney is going to lose a mint on this one, with it the second major misfire of the year, following Captain America: Brave New World. Ironically, that film, which is going to go down as one of Marvel’s lowest grossers, ended up in third place this weekend (higher than expected) with a $4.1 million weekend and a $192.1 million domestic total, which means it should still break $200 million domestically. It’s still the year’s highest grosser, although with it unlikely to pass $500 million internationally, it will likely fail to turn a profit for Disney. However, they have two more kicks at the can this year with Thunderbolts and Fantastic Four: First Steps.

Black bag

Steven Soderbergh’s adult-skewed Black Bag proved to be the recent release with the most staying power, falling 42% for a $4.4 million weekend. Given the $50 million price tag, the $14.88 million total is likely not very good for distributor Focus Features, but at least it’s showing a small bit of resilience in theaters. Last week’s champ, Novocaine, fell much steeper than expected, 57%, to fifth place, with only $3.76 million and a total of $15.76 million. It was narrowly defeated by Mickey 17, Warner Bros’s sci-fi flop, which made $3.8 million for a $40 million total.

That wasn’t WB’s only disappointment this weekend. Their crime drama, The Alto Knights, had a horrible opening, only mustering $3 million in over 2500 theaters. The Robert De Niro-vehicle (he plays two roles) had to overcome bad reviews and little-to-no marketing from a studio that clearly lost faith in it. It was followed at the box office by a movie the studio actually produced but then sold, The Day the Earth Blew Up, and an animated Looney Tunes film, which made $1.83 million for a $6 million-plus total. While those aren’t great numbers, Ketchup is apparently still in business with WB, with them looking to buy their shelved Coyote vs ACME

Neon’s The Monkey continued to show serious muscle at the box office, making $1.55 million for a $37 million domestic total, while Dog Man made $1.5 million, with the $95 million total not too far from the century mark. The faith based film, Last Supper, made $1.33 million for a $5.3 million total.

The sci-fi thriller Ash, starring Eiza González and Aaron Paul, will be getting a theatrical release in March

Other new releases fared even worse than Alto Knights, with IFC/Shudder’s Ash proving to be a disaster, with it making only $716k on over 1100 screens. That’s only $631 a screen – OUCH. The long-shelved Jonathan Majors flick, Magazine Dreams, didn’t do any better, making $700k on 815 screens – making it seem like the actor won’t be making a comeback anytime soon. Another notable flop is A24’s Opus, which plummeted 72% in week 2, with only $282k and a horrible $1.8 million total, making it one of the indie company’s few horror disasters. The Sam Raimi-produced Locked, which stars Bill Skarsgard and Anthony Hopkins did better, with $829k on 971 screens, with it also available digitally.

Next weekend, Jason Statham will return to theaters with A Working Man. Will the Stallone-penned film be a sleeper hit in the vein of The Beekeeper, or will it be an Expend4bles-sized flop? Let us know in the comments!

Disney’s live-action remakes have been a very mixed bag, but for the most part, they’ve been tremendously successful at the box office. Many of them have been controversial, as Disney has often radically reworked stories to suit modern sensibilities, which could include more diverse (or accurate) representations of characters. However, some of their choices have been equally puzzling, with them sometimes watering down stories so much that they become nearly unrecognizable. This isn’t always a bad thing, with Maleficent an especially radical reimagining of Sleeping Beauty, which audiences at the time embraced. In recent years, movies like Snow White have proven to be controversial, with many feeling their re-imaginings were more preoccupied with pushing agendas than providing entertainment.

Whatever the case, it also can’t be denied that not all of their remakes have been bad. Many loved Jon Favreau’s The Jungle Book, while Cruella, a new take on 101 Dalmatians, also proved to be a lot of fun. The Beauty and the Beast remake also went down well with audiences, and the upcoming Lilo & Stitch remake also has a lot of buzz. And, there’s also the fact that – with a few exceptions – the films have often done exceedingly well at the box office. Even Aladdin, which many found a particularly lifeless new version (which seemed to sour director Guy Ritchie on studio movies) made over $1 billion worldwide.

Of all the remakes which is your favorite? Take the poll and let us know!

Snow White

The box office numbers are starting to roll in, and so far, it looks like Snow White is underperforming badly for Disney. Whether it was the toxic word-of-mouth or middling reviews, the family audience that typically allowed the Mouse House’s animated-to-live action remakes to open in the $90-100 million range just are turning out for this one. Early this week, we predicted that Snow White would make $55 million – which itself would have been disastrous for a $300 million movie, but Deadline is reporting the numbers are far worse. According to them, the movie will only open in the mid-40s, which is about the same level Disney’s Dumbo remake opened to, with that being considered a notable flop that led to Tim Burton quitting directing for several years. And that movie cost about half of what Snow White did.

The only silver lining for Disney is that the movie has an okay B+ CinemaScore. Over the holidays, Mufasa opened even worse with $36 million, but it was able to hang in there at the box office, making over $250 million domestically. Snow White would be very lucky to get to that level, although there’s not a lot of competition for family movies coming out over the next few weeks.

Warner Bros’s big piece of counter-programming, The Alto Knights, is proving to be yet another disaster for the studio. The $50 million gangster flick will only open to about $3 million, with it bound to go down as one of the biggest box office disasters in recent memory. What went wrong? I believe that audiences were confused by Robert De Niro playing both roles. Also, a movie like this depends on critical raves, and Barry Levinson’s film is too stately. The fact is, a movie like this needs a really dynamic director. Scorsese could have made this into a masterpiece, but under Levinson, it was only ok, although it could play a lot better after it makes its Max debut in a few weeks.

Anyway, you slice it; this is proving to be another terrific weekend for the 2025 box office, which badly needs to be resuscitated.

Snow White

It was reported earlier this week that Disney’s new live-action adaptation of their classic animated film Snow White was aiming to open the weekend with a range from $45 million to $55 million as it screens in 4,200 North American theaters. Internationally, the Rachel Zegler-led fairy tale is estimating a $50 million take and bring its overall gross to somewhere around $100 million in its first week. Projections are not putting Snow White above previous live-action remakes from the House of Mouse, where 2023’s The Little Mermaid would gross $95 million in its opening weekend.

Snow White has an uphill battle to fight as it encountered much controversy, ranging from casting to CGI issues to the stigma of Disney live-action remakes in general. Marc Webb directs this new interpretation. Webb is previously known for also taking up the task of battling the uphill fight of a divisive franchise with The Amazing Spider-Man reboot at Sony. Deadline is now reporting that as Snow White finally faces the audience, Thursday numbers from their source is totaling at $3.5 million with showtimes starting at 2 pm. However, these are not official numbers reported by Disney.

These numbers are quite solid when they’re held up to past Disney animation-to-live-action adaptations, such as the $2.3 million previews of 2019’s Maleficent: Mistress of Evil (18% of a $12.5 million Friday for a 3-day of $36.9 million) and Dumbo‘s $2.6 million Thursday night preview (17% of a $15.2 million on Friday for a 3-day total of $46 million). It’s also reportedly pretty comparable to DreamWorks Animation’s Kung Fu Panda 4 last year, which started with $3.8 million in Thursday previews for a $19.4 million Friday take and $57.8 million 3-day opening.

Our Chris Bumbray wasn’t taken with the movie as he said in his review, “With many other, better, fairy tale adaptations out there, Snow White feels like little more than cash grab. If there was anything about the approach that was once deemed fresh (original screenwriter Greta Gerwig no longer has a screenplay credit), it’s been sanded off, with director Marc Webb having made a pretty dull film (sadly, his first in eight years). That said, I hate to put too much blame at his feet, as this reeks of moviemaking by committee, and in the efforts of pleasing everyone, Disney’s made a film that will please no one. “

Snow White Alto Knights

Here’s a grim figure: outside of Captain America: Brave New World and Dog Man, no other 2025 release has managed to open to over $20 million domestically. The closest we got was Mickey 17, whose $19 million opening was largely seen as disastrous for a movie that cost $118 million (and likely led to the recent reshuffling of WB’s troubled release calendar). The good news is that this weekend’s major new release, Snow White, is all but guaranteed to post the year’s second biggest opening (after Brave New World), but it will inevitably still be seen as a major box office disappointment.

While industry estimates have it opening in the $50 million range, which seems accurate to me (I’d say it has a shot at $55 million), that number would still be a far cry from the usual box office takings anytime Disney does a live-action remake of one of their classics. On the high end, The Lion King opened with over $190 million, while even releases that were considered mildly disappointing (The Little Mermaid and Aladdin – neither of which is getting a sequel) opened north of $90 million. A $55 million opening would be their worst since Dumbo, which tanked with $45 million. With a budget in the $300 million range, that kind of opening simply won’t cut the mustard.

The only silver lining is that another recent Disney movie, Mufasa: The Lion King, also had a low opening ($35 million), but it was able to rally to a $250 million domestic total, with a $700 million plus international gross, meaning it turned a profit. For Snow White to be able to pull off the same trick, the word-of-mouth will have to be really good, but the film seems too generic to really get people talking.

Elsewhere, Warner Bros is all but dumping the Robert De Niro-led gangster flick The Alto Knights. They’ve barely been screening the film, which confusingly casts De Niro in dual roles. Without major critical acclaim behind it, it will be lucky to open to $5 million before it hits Max, where it seems destined to gain more of an audience. That number should still allow it to hit second play, with third place a 3-way-race between Mickey 17, Novocaine and Black Bag, all of which seem on track to hit the $4 million mark. My money is on Novocaine.

Here are my predictions:

  1. Snow White: $55 million
  2. The Alto Knights: $5 million
  3. Novocaine: $4 million
  4. Black Bag: $3.5 million
  5. Mickey 17: $3.4 million

PLOT: An enchanted kingdom is ruined by its evil Queen (Gal Gadot). Their only hope is a kind-hearted princess named Snow White (Rachel Zegler), whose youth and beauty are coveted by the Queen.

REVIEW: Snow White has to be one of the most ridiculously controversial movies in recent memory. It’s become something of a political hot potato, with its detractors claiming it would be overly “woke” based on some clumsy quotes attributed to the movie’s star. Whatever those quotes might have promised, there’s nothing particularly incendiary about this retelling of the Disney classic, and there’s certainly nothing particularly woke about it, with it hitting most of the same beats as the original (and yes, there’s still “true love’s enchanted kiss”). However, that doesn’t mean it’s good either.

Truth be told, none of Disney’s live-action adaptations of their animated classics have been winners, outside of maybe The Jungle Book, with them typically watered down and lacking the magic that made them so beloved in the first place. It doesn’t help that Snow White’s been done to death already, with Universal having done a pretty solid action version of it not too long ago with Snow White and The Huntsman (let’s skip the sequel though). The only audience that might really go for this would be very young children who’ve never seen the animated classic.

Otherwise, Snow White is a big yawn, with it feeling strangely padded for a movie that only runs 105 minutes. Despite all the controversy, Rachel Zegler is fine as Snow White, with her fresh-faced look perfect for the kind-hearted character, and she can certainly sing (even if the songs are far from memorable). In some ways, I’d argue that, despite her comments, Snow White hasn’t been updated enough; with her such a naive heroine, it’s hard to invest too much in her. Yet, of the cast, Zegler fares the best.

Gal Gadot’s performance as the Evil Queen is more of a mixed bag. While she looks the part, her line readings are often stilted. When she’s allowed to chew the scenery, she seems to be having a good time, but she lacks the dynamism a role like this is crying out for, with Sigourney Weaver (in Snow White: A Tale of Terror) and Charlize Theron (in Huntsman) having been a lot more memorable. The seven dwarves, which are CGI characters closely patterned on their animated versions, have an uncanny valley look with them, at worst, looking like garden gnomes that have come to life. They could have done something cool with the dwarves, but instead, they’re silly comic relief and not much else.

Snow White’s handsome prince love interest has been somewhat reimagined, with Andrew Burnap’s Jonathan more of a roguish, Han Solo-type, being the leader of a group of bandits, but he serves much of the same purpose as in the cartoon. Of all the characters, The Huntsman, who should have been cool, comes off the worst, with Ansu Kabia playing him as sullen, depressed, and – worst of all – a total wimp.

One thing to mention, though, is that Snow White isn’t really for us here at JoBlo. More than any other recent Disney movie, this is designed strictly for kids; with it so lacking in any kind of edge, I can’t imagine any child over ten actually wanting to see this. With many other, better, fairy tale adaptations out there, Snow White feels like little more than cash grab.

Snow White

A classic Disney tale will be going up against a classic mob story starring one of the genre’s biggest stars, Robert De Niro, written by one of the genre’s most prolific writer, Nicholas Pileggi, and directed by equally prolific director Barry Levinson. The live-action version of Snow White premieres this week. The film is a big-budgeted spectacle that adapts one of the studio’s most notable classics; however, it has also attracted a number of controversies from the public. Meanwhile, The Alto Knights brings De Niro back to the gangster genre with Goodfellas writer in tow, and De Niro plays a dual role in the film. However, for this release, despite the heavyweight names behind it, not a whole lot of buzz was carried with it.

Variety is reporting that Snow White is aiming to open the weekend with a range from $45 million to $55 million as it screens in 4,200 North American theaters. Internationally, the Rachel Zegler-led fairy tale is estimating a $50 million take and bring its overall gross to somewhere around $100 million in its first week. This would have Snow White handily float to the top of the box office charts as the past week showcased a slow performance, and Jack Quaid’s action comedy, Novocaine, would take the top spot from the previous week’s victor, Mickey 17. Projections are not putting Snow White above previous live-action remakes from the House of Mouse, where 2023’s The Little Mermaid would gross $95 million in its opening weekend.

The first reactions of Snow White address the uphill battle the film has to face, but while some think the film exceeded expectations, others think it just didn’t stick the landing. On social media, one viewer at an advanced screening glowed about the film immensely in her reaction, “Rachel Zegler is a shining supernova in #SnowWhite, beautifully embodying the graceful, gentle nature of the OG Disney princess. It’s a visual feast with show-stopping new musical numbers and, of course, dozens of enchanting animated animals. The screenplay wisely gives its heroine newfound depth through her fervent desire to become the leader her father believed she could be, and a love story that’s sweet as apple pie.”

Meanwhile, another screening attendee didn’t have much positive things to say about his viewing except with how much he enjoyed Gal Gadot“While Gal Gadot is great as the evil Queen, #SnowWhite isn’t a great remake of the animated classic. Rachel Zegler is a poor Snow White, the changes to the story and lyrics are awful, some special effects are not that special and the film didn’t land for me. A huge shame.”

Our review is coming this week, so stay tuned.

Snow White

While Disney has been at it for years now with reimagining their animated classics as live-action films, the upcoming Snow White has particularly attracted a lot of controversial attention, from using CGI for the dwarves to the casting of Rachel Zegler as the titular character. The movie will now face the public as Snow White recently had an advanced screening and the reactions from attendees have hit social media. With all the negative attention, who will be the fairest of them all?

Our Chris Bumbray sees the movie himself this week, so stay tuned for our own reactions! Meanwhile, Paul Klein seemingly enjoyed the film despite its flaws, although he does also feel he may regret his words as he posted, “I may regret saying this but #SnowWhite is solid. I really enjoyed the musical numbers, particularly the opening one and the Queen’s evil bop. Zegler was great in the lead role, and Gadot was fun. It’s really the CGI dwarves that let the film down. The choice is baffling.”

Christopher Rates It says Snow White recaptures the spirit of the original and is one of Disney’s best live-action remakes in years as he said, “The biggest surprise of 2025 is that the most ‘controversial’ and most hated film of the year is actually a decent live-action remake. #SnowWhite is not only one of their best live-action remakes in years, but it’s also a film that recaptures the magic of the 1937 movie. Rachel Zegler IS Snow White, and she delivers such a magical performance. The musical numbers are unforgettable, the visuals (not the uncanny dwarves) are enchanting, and Erin Cressida Wilson’s screenplay provides depth to this world that I didn’t know was needed.”

Carl Roberts didn’t have much positive things to say about his viewing except with how much he enjoyed Gal Gadot, “While Gal Gadot is great as the evil Queen, #SnowWhite isn’t a great remake of the animated classic. Rachel Zegler is a poor Snow White, the changes to the story and lyrics are awful, some special effects are not that special and the film didn’t land for me. A huge shame.”

Tori Brazier enjoyed the fact that the movie’s story was updated well for modern audiences, “Well, Disney has had the last laugh with #SnowWhite – after YEARS of backlash, they’ve produced one of their strongest ever remakes. Rachel Zegler is an enchanting lead, all the story tweaks work well for a modern audience and, after 88 years, it’s a reimagining that makes sense.”

Katcy Stephan glowed about the film immensely in her reaction, “Rachel Zegler is a shining supernova in #SnowWhite, beautifully embodying the graceful, gentle nature of the OG Disney princess. It’s a visual feast with show-stopping new musical numbers and, of course, dozens of enchanting animated animals. The screenplay wisely gives its heroine newfound depth through her fervent desire to become the leader her father believed she could be, and a love story that’s sweet as apple pie.”

Here’s the official synopsis for Snow White courtesy of Disney:

“From the producer and executive producer of Wicked, Marc Platt and Jared LeBoff, and director Marc Webb (The Amazing Spider-Man) comes Disney’s Snow White, a live-action musical reimagining of the studio’s classic 1937 film. The magical music adventure journeys back to the timeless story with Rachel Zegler (West Side Story) in the title role and Gal Gadot (Wonder Woman) as her Stepmother, the Evil Queen. The new trailer showcases the scale and beauty of the lavish production design, the beloved characters Bashful, Doc, Dopey, Grumpy, Happy, Sleepy, and Sneezy, and a first look at the power ballad Waiting on a Wish, one of the all-new original songs from EGOT winners Benj Pasek and Justin Paul (The Greatest Showman).”

Rachel Zegler is ready to unleash her Disney princess superpower in the latest teaser trailer for Disney’s live-action Snow White movie. While Rapunzel has her sentient hair, and Elsa can conjure snow and frost to spectacular results, the Fairest of Them All can summon an army of woodland creatures with her melodious singing voice. Zegler, known for her pipes, belts one out for the latest Snow White promo, giving fans a taste of the magic of the mouse-eared studio’s latest live-action adaptation of an animated classic.

Despite a lack of enthusiasm for Snow White, the enchanted film is tracking for a $53M debut in North America. Disney is doing everything it can to get potential audience members psyched for the reimagining of a stone-cold classic. Beyond the questionable design of the Seven Dwarves, Snow White looks like a pure-hearted fairytale romp with over-the-top performances, plenty of sing-a-long scenes, and CGI sets that have us begging for the days of on-location filming. At least Zegler looks to shine brightly in the upcoming adaptation, and hey, we haven’t seen the movie yet, so we shouldn’t be too quick to judge.

Best known to genre fans for playing iconic slasher Jason Voorhees in multiple Friday the 13th fan films, Jason Brooks has stepped behind the camera to direct the upcoming film The Death of Snow White, which is set to be released on the same March weekend that Disney will be releasing their live-action Snow White movie! With March 21st swiftly approaching, a trailer for The Death of Snow White has arrived online and can be seen in the embed above.

Directed by Brooks from a screenplay he wrote with producer Naomi Mechem-Miller, The Death of Snow White has the following synopsis: Pursued by her stepmother for eternal beauty, Snow White flees into a terrifying forest and aligns with seven bloodthirsty dwarves – cold-blooded assassins with a knack for brutal killings. Her spirit is tested in this grim fairy tale.

The film stars Sanae Loutsis (Kill Craft) as Snow White, with Chelsea Edmundson (Army of the Dead) as the Evil Queen. Brooks has an acting role in the film, and other cast members include Tristan Nokes (Salvage Yard Shine Boys), Risa Mei (The Yorkie Werewolf), Ali Chapman (Who’s Watching the Kids), Jeremy Hallam (Hacks), Carl Covington (The Horrorverse), Kelly Tappan (Children of the Pines), Holland Stull (Devil’s Knight), and newcomers Dillon Moore, Michael De Santo II, Christopher Burnside, and Hailey Stubblefield.

Coming our way from Real Fiction Studios and STL Productions, The Death of Snow White is said to be a raw, dark fantasy reimagining of the beloved tale, a gothic horror experience that stays true to the core themes that made Snow White a timeless classic. Brooks said, “While our intention was to create a fun and unique take on the story while incorporating wonderful practical effects, we never intended to compete against Disney and what they are doing. Our entire budget is less than 1% of Disney’s budget. They are spending more on marketing than we had to make the film. We love Disney and want the best for everyone. Our true goal is to make a movie that people will truly enjoy.

2025 Movie Preview

With 2024 coming to a close, it’s time to start looking to the future for our cinema needs. What does the year hold in store for us cinephiles? While 2024 held some surprise hits, giant blockbusters, and small films that could, it’s looking like 2025 movie releases will hold more of the same. We can hope that the good fortune that Hollywood has brought us will continue into the new year and keep theater attendance up. Here’s our 2025 Movie Preview:

Den of Thieves: Pantera

Den Of Thieves: Pantera – January 10

Gerard Butler is back chasing down diamond thieves on the streets of Europe. He stumbles across the planning of the largest diamond heist ever planned. If you liked the first movie, then this will probably be more of the same. I’m personally happy that Gerard Butler is making some fun B-movie action films like back in the day. Plane was fun, and I’m excited to see these types of films at the theater again.

better man

Better Man – January 10

A biopic about UK pop star Robbie Williams as we see his childhood all the way through his superstardom. Robbie will be playing himself, but how do you do that without it being weird? What if you make it so he’s a chimp? Sure. With Pharrell releasing his biopic as a Lego movie and now Robbie Williams replacing himself with a CGI chimp it seems biopics are really trying to gain quirk appeal.

Back in Action, release, Netflix, Jamie Foxx, Cameron Diax, first-look images

Back In Action – January 17

Cameron Diaz is coming out of retirement and teaming up with Jamie Foxx for this Netflix original film. They play former CIA agents who are pulled back in when their identities are exposed. While I’m glad to see Diaz back on screen after a decade away, it’s odd that this generic spy action movie did it. Maybe just the idea of being in a movie with Jamie Foxx again was enough.

Michelle Yeoh, Star Trek: Section 31, first look

Star Trek: Section 31 – January 24

This direct to Paramount+ film is a spin off from Star Trek: Discovery starring Michelle Yeoh as her character Philippa Georgiou. This was originally planned as a series, but after COVID-19 delays, it was scrapped. Later they revived the idea for an original movie. Star Trek has always been a beloved franchise but with new movies going direct to streaming, will we ever see them return to the big screen?

bridget jones, isla fisher, jim broadbent, nico parker

Bridget Jones: Mad About The Boy – February 13

For the first time in nine years, Bridget Jones is back! Only this time, it will be on Peacock in the United States and then in theaters everywhere else in the world. Seems backwards but okay. Bridget Jones is now a single mom and trying to figure out how that works when you’re trying to get back into the dating pool. Renee Zellweger and Hugh Grant return, along with some other familiar faces. Are we past the Bridget Jones fandom, or is there still more life in this franchise?

Captain America: Brave New World, Red Hulk

Captain America: Brave New World – February 14

After the events of Falcon And The Winter Soldier, Anthony Mackie is donning the shield as the new Captain America. Harrison Ford steps in for the late William Hurt as the new President Ross, who has a big red secret to share. Marvel only had one release last summer, and it seemed to work really well for them. Let’s see if something without Hugh Jackman’s claws still registers for Marvel fans.

2025 Movie Preview

Mickey 17 – March 7

The new film from Bong Joon-ho sees Robert Pattinson sent on a space mission because he is seen as expendable. With technology, he can be regenerated if something goes wrong. This time, something goes wrong, and he begins to experience an existential crisis. This darkly comedic film looks like a good time as we see Mickey die in numerous different ways and still have to get up to go to work the next day.

black bag

Black Bag – March 14

Steven Soderberg’s spy thriller is coming out with no details on the plot. With a cast that includes Michael Fassbender, Cate Blanchett, and Pierce Brosnan, you can bet lots of people will be interested in checking it out. Soderberg has always had an interesting take on just about any film he releases, and this will be no different.

Snow White

Snow White – March 21

Disney continues its trend of doing live-action remakes of its old animated films. This one caused a stir when it was announced, as people seemed divided on how to handle the seven dwarfs aspect of the film. Ultimately, the dwarves will be completely CGI. It will be interesting to see how this plays in a modern culture. Expect some new songs, and Gal Gadot will be playing the evil queen, which is inspired casting compared to the look of the original character.

2025 Movie Preview

A Minecraft Movie – April 4

With Super Mario Bros. and the Sonic movies being big hits, it’s no surprise that the hugely popular game Minecraft would be getting its own movie. Jack Black once again jumps on board to play Steve, the generic character most players take control of when booting up Minecraft. Jason Mamoa, Jennifer Coolidge, and Kate McKinnon round out the cast as random characters are pulled into the cubic world and need the help of an expert crafter to get home. Seems very Jumanji.

The Accountant 2, release date

The Accountant 2 – April 25

I don’t think anyone saw this sequel coming. In the first film, Ben Affleck played a neuro-divergent accountant who had a side job as a hitman. The film was a modest hit but nothing that would seem to warrant a sequel. Some other familiar faces from the first one return.

Thunderbolts*

Thunderbolts* – May 2

The second of Marvel’s offerings this year sees a bunch of cast-off characters from previous Marvel films being rounded up for a new agency. Yelena will be leading the team of previous supervillains who are now taking jobs for the government. Of course, this will be complicated by a lot of in-fighting and some unexpected speedbumps. The trailer makes this look like a lot of fun so here’s hoping it will give MCU fans some laughs while providing some great action scenes.

2025 Movie Preview

Lilo & Stitch – May 23

This is the second of Disney’s live-action remakes. Stitch crash-lands on Earth and is adopted by a young girl. Hijinks ensue as others come looking for him. The original had a great sense of humor, and the trailers showing Stitch invading other Disney properties were great. I have no idea if this will translate well into live-action, but kids will probably love it.

mission impossible

Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning – May 23

This was originally titled Dead Reckoning Part II, but after the last film underperformed, the title was quickly changed. It will continue the storyline from the last film, and we see Ethan Hunt trying to stop the deadly AI from causing worldwide chaos. Of course in order to shut it down, they have to make their way to the submarine that is crashed on the ocean floor.

Karate Kid: Legends

Karate Kid: Legends – May 30

The franchise returns to the big screen as we see Daniel from the original and Mr. Han from the 2010 “remake” join forces to mentor a new student. It’s a strange crossing of the streams which retcons the remake into being set in the same continuity. With Cobra Kai just ending when this hits theaters, will fans even care enough to go check it out? Fans of the original movie got their nostalgia fix with the series. Are there people who have nostalgia for the 2010 movie?

Ballerina

From The World Of John Wick: Ballerina – June 6

The spin-off of the John Wick films hits the big screen. We were introduced to the Ballerinas in John Wick 3. Now they get a film all their own while Keanu Reeves will still make an appearance since this is set during that time period. Ana de Armas takes over the role of Eve as she looks to get revenge on the people who killed her family. The intricate world of John Wick is fascinating to explore, and this gives us a chance to see even more of it.

2025 Movie Preview

Elio – June 13

An animated film from Disney that follows Elio. He’s a young space fanatic who gets tasked with saving the universe. They have been struggling to come up with animated films that really stick with audiences that aren’t already established Pixar properties. The shine of the early Pixar films has really dimmed after Disney bought them. Hopefully we can see Disney regain its footing with animated films like we used to have.

How to Train Your Dragon

How To Train Your Dragon – June 13

Dreamworks seems to be taking a cue from Disney and remaking some of their more popular animated properties. We’re getting another round of dragons as we see the first meeting of Hiccup and Toothless. Again. Not sure if this trend will ever end, but at least Dreamworks doesn’t have as deep of a catalog as Disney. When can we expect to see a live-action Kung Fu Panda?

Jurassic World Rebirth, Jurassic Park

Jurassic World: Rebirth – July 2

Scarlett Johanssen is taking the lead role this time around. No one seems to have learned any lesson about bringing dinosaurs back to life. This time it looks like explorers have to go in to get DNA samples from some prehistoric animals to help cure a disease. Universal really just wants to see if there is any juice left to squeeze out of this fruit. It may be time to let it sleep for a few decades before heading back in.

Superman

Superman – July 11

James Gunn takes his stab at the Man of Steel as the DC Universe reboots itself on-screen once again. Reports are that Gunn held an early screening for WB execs and that it did not go well. That could be internet fodder, but it doesn’t instill a lot of hope for the new version of the DCU. With the DC shows on the CW just wrapping up, we’ll have to see if Gunn’s Superman will connect with comic fans. The recent trailer seemed to gain a lot of views very quickly, so we at least know that fans are interested.

The Smurfs

The Smurfs Movie – July 18

Those magical little blue creatures will grace theater screens once again. This time, the film will be fully animated and musical. Paramount/Nickelodeon will take on the film, and it seems to be inspired by the popularity of the Troll movies. Rhianna will voice Smurfette and be joined by Nick Offerman, John Goodman, Kurt Russell, Dan Levy, and Hannah Waddingham.

fantastic four first steps

The Fantastic Four: First Steps – July 25

Marvel’s first family finally makes their way into the MCU. While they have been on-screen before as part of Fox’s Marvel movies, this time, we’ll see what the MCU has in store for the group. Marvel’s third film in six months will really test if audiences are in superhero fatigue or not. The early footage shown at Comicon seems fun, so hopefully, it will bring something new.

Liam Neeson, The Naked Gun remake

Naked Gun – August 1

Liam Neeson is hoping to try something drastically different than we’ve seen from him before. He has some big shoes to fill, as Leslie Nielsen based the whole second half of his career on the original Naked Gun. It will be hard to see anyone else trying to play that role. Plus, does that type of comedy have a place anymore?

Freakier Friday

Freakier Friday – August 8

Disney’s calendar of releases this year is crazy, as we see the reteaming of Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan. The last film was a remake of an old Disney Classic. Now, twenty-one years later, we are getting a sequel. Expect more body-swapping jokes as the Lindsay Lohan resurgence seems to be taking shape. She’s been on an upswing lately, and hopefully, we can see her get a victory lap as she has matured.

Nobody

Nobody 2 – August 15

Somehow, Bob Odenkirk became an action star after starring in Nobody back in 2021. Now, we get to see some more middle-aged dad action as he returns for this sequel. The first movie really worked to show what appears to be an ordinary man who decides to get back into a life he left a long time ago. Now that we have seen him for what he really is, here’s hoping for more action and more Christopher Lloyd running around with a shotgun.

Downton Abbey a new era review

Downton Abbey 3 – September 12

The third film spin-off of the popular period drama. Many of the cast return to once again play their characters, showing the divide between the upper class and the working class. This drama captivated audiences when it first premiered, and both previous films have been big hits. It only makes sense to keep it going with another film.

Tron Ares

Tron: Ares – October 10

We’re traveling back into the world of Tron. Jeff Bridges is back, along with a slew of other familiar faces like Jodie Turner-Smith, Evan Peters, and Jared Leto. This time, a program is sent from the digital world to the real world. Each Tron film so far has pushed the boundaries in terms of special effects and technical marvels. Let’s see what they come up with this time.

Mortal Kombat

Mortal Kombat 2 – October 24

We’re heading back to the arcade, so get your quarters ready. The reboot of the Mortal Kombat franchise continues as our heroes are heading back to Outland to continue the fight for all existence. The last film was released during the pandemic, so a true gauge of the popularity is hard to judge, but audiences seem to have a positive response. During the initial film franchise run, the second entry pushed it off a cliff. We can hope they learned their lesson.

Now You See Me 3, release

Now You See Me 3 – November 14

Another entry into the magic mystery franchise is in the pipeline. All of our sleight-of-hand artists are returning, but no plot has been released so far. The previous movies have gained an audience through their unique use of stage magic and illusions to foil their adversaries. It is a fun and interesting way of doing a mystery based action film. If it lives up to the previous entries, then audiences should leave the theater happy.

Wicked: Part Two, Wicked: For Good

Wicked: For Good – November 21

The second part of the recent smash hit. Those who haven’t seen the Broadway play or read the book will get to see how the story ends. I expect more fantastic songs, some great visuals, and more Oz. We all need all the Oz we can get. Let’s all get ready to defy gravity once again.

2025 Movie Preview

Zootopia 2 – November 26

Disney has quite the release schedule this year, and we’re not even done yet. Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde are teaming up to solve a wild case that could change their entire lives. It will be fun to travel back into the world of Zootopia and see where the characters are. It looks like more of the same fun we had in the last film.

Zoe Saldaña, Avatar: Fire and Ash

Avatar: Fire And Ash – December 19

It’s time to head back to Pandora. Last time James Cameron dealt with water motifs and explored more of the world. Looks like we’ll be dealing with fire this time around. While the films seem to always be a wonder of motion capture and CGI, it would be great to see Cameron go back to other projects before his film career comes to an end. We can always hope.

Spongebob Squarepants

The SpongeBob Movie: Search For SquarePants – December 19

Hey Kids! SpongeBob is back with another movie. This time, he will explore the depths of the ocean to deal with the ghost of the Flying Dutchman. This franchise just keeps engaging generation after generation. At this point, The Simpsons might be about the only animated franchise that has lasted longer. As long as fans keep checking out the movies, the more they will keep making.

Disney’s Snow White has garnered quite a bit of controversy. The film was delayed a full year from March 2024 to March 2025 and there had been outspoken critics, from Peter Dinklage for their handling of the Dwarves issue, to the son of the original animated film’s director. David Hale Hand, son of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs supervising director David Dodd Hand, is very much opposed to the remake. “I mean, it’s a whole different concept, and I just totally disagree with it, and I know my dad and Walt would also very much disagree with it,” Hand said. “There’s no respect for what Disney did and what my dad did… I think Walt and he would be turning in their graves.“

Disney has now released the second full trailer for their Snow White adaptation. The description reads, “From the producer and executive producer of Wicked, Marc Platt and Jared LeBoff, and director Marc Webb (The Amazing Spider-Man) comes Disney’s Snow White, a live-action musical reimagining of the studio’s classic 1937 film.

As Disney’s very first animated feature film, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs holds a special place in the hearts of Disney fans. It’s not like there haven’t been live-action movies based on the original fairy tale before, but from the casting of Rachel Zegler as Snow White to the removal of almost all the dwarf characters, it feels like there has been a backlash against this remake since day one. Hand added that it’s a “disgrace” that Disney is “trying to do something new with something that was such a great success earlier… Their thoughts are just so radical now. They change the stories, they change the thought process of the characters. They’re making up new woke things and I’m just not into any of that. I find it quite frankly a bit insulting [what] they may have done with some of these classic films.“

The 7 Dwarves

Putting a horror twist on popular children’s story characters who are in the public domain has become a popular trend these days. Multiple Mickey Mouse horror films are making their way out into the world since the earliest Mickey cartoons are now public domain, filmmakers are working on horror versions of Goldilocks, Sleeping Beauty, and Cinderella, and a whole cinematic universe is being built out of horror movies based on the likes of Winnie the Pooh, Bambi, Peter Pan, and others. Last month, we learned that a movie called The 7 Dwarves, which puts a terrifying twist on the story of Snow White, is in the works and scheduled for release in March of 2025. Now we’ve gotten our hands on a pair of first look images from The 7 Dwarves, and you can check those out at the bottom of this article!

Promising a spine-chilling ride that will leave viewers on the edge of their seats, The 7 Dwarves has the following synopsis: In The 7 Dwarves, Snow White narrowly escapes the clutches of the evil witch, only to find herself lost in the eerie depths of the dark forest. But her nightmare is far from over. She soon becomes the prey of a sadistic group of dwarves (Cranky, Jolly, Drowsy, Meek, Snuffy, Wheezy, Chief, and Ditzy). Far from being her protectors, these sadistic dwarves hunt her relentlessly, forcing Snow White to fight for survival. As she outwits and eliminates each dwarf one by one, the tension rises to a blood-soaked climax in this spine-chilling horror reimagining.

Colin Patrick Ryan is directing the film from a script by producer Chris Hoyt and executive producer Galen Christy. A press release notes, “Combining suspense, horror, and a reimagined take on a familiar tale, The 7 Dwarves promises to captivate horror fans and fairytale enthusiasts alike.” Christy adds, “We’re thrilled to bring audiences a bold, new vision of Snow White like they’ve never seen before. By turning this beloved tale into a nightmarish
survival story, fans of the original will be captivated by the unexpected twists and turns that horror lovers will be talking about for years to come!

Ryan provided the following statement: “We wanted to take a familiar story and push it to a dark, unexpected place. This isn’t your childhood fairytale. The 7 Dwarves is full of brutal action, psychological horror, and twists that will shock even the most seasoned horror fans.

The 7 Dwarves is being produced by CTRL+N and Octane MultiMedia, and will star newcomer Lia Ryan in the role of Snow White. Hoyt is producing the film with Josh McKamie, Colin Stein, and Andy Swanson.

The crossover you didn’t know you needed, The Asylum’s Snow White and the Seven Samurai combines a beloved fairytale and an epic classic in a new action movie now available digitally. So move over, Rachel Zegler, before you get disemboweled by a katana!

Here is the official plot of Snow White and the Seven Samurai: “Left for dead by her rich and powerful stepmother, Snow White is taken in by a team of assassins – The Seven Samurai, who train her in their ways of fighting. As her stepmother becomes more and more powerful, Snow White and the samurai take up arms to topple her once and for all.”

The trailer asks, “Mirror, Mirror on the wall, who kicks the most ass of them all?” That may not be Snow White but rather Quinton “Rampage” Jackson, whose name and face get the most space on the movie’s poster. But the cast does also include Eric Roberts and  Gina Vitori. The movie is directed by Michael Su (Bloodthirst and Transmorphers: Mech Beast) and written by Jacob David Smith (Prepare to Die). Not that you would, but the movie shouldn’t be confused with Tom Holt’s book of the same name.

While the movie can currently be found digitally, it will also hit a very limited number of theaters on March 1st in Los Angeles, CA, Minneapolis, MN, Miami Beach, FL, Brunswick, OH, and Roswell, GA. That’s fewer screens than there are samurai!

Of course, both Disney’s Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs and Akira Kurosawa’s Seven Samurai are widely regarded as some of the greatest films ever, with both serving as essentials within their respective genres. Walt Disney received an honorary Oscar for the film’s breakthrough achievements, while Seven Samurai would earn technical nods, a rare feat for a foreign film. Disney’s 1937 picture has a 97% on Rotten Tomatoes, while Seven Samurai has a perfect score. Both are consistent presences on They Shoot Pictures, Don’t They?’s list of the 1,000 greatest films ever, with Kurosawa’s masterpiece normally in the top 10.

Disney’s upcoming live-action adaptation of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs certainly seems to have struck a nerve for some people, and I doubt the first-look image is going to change anyone’s mind.

The studio announced this morning that the release of Snow White had been pushed from March 22, 2024, to March 21, 2025, but they also released a new image featuring Rachel Zegler’s Snow White surrounded by the Seven Dwarfs. Unfortunately, the characters look as though they’ve been dragged from the uncanny valley kicking and screaming. Check it out below.

Snow White, live-action, Rachel Zegler

That’s some Polar Express shit right here. The reveal of the characters may also come as a surprise to some as Disney had implied that they would be taking a different approach with the Dwarves after Peter Dinklage slammed the remake last year.

I was a little taken aback when they were very proud to cast a Latina actress as Snow White,” Dinklage said. “You’re still telling the story of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Take a step back and look at what you’re doing there. It makes no sense to me. You’re progressive in one way and you’re still making that f–king backwards story about seven dwarfs living in a cave together, what the f–k are you doing man? Have I done nothing to advance the cause from my soapbox? I guess I’m not loud enough.

In response, Disney released the following statement: “To avoid reinforcing stereotypes from the original animated film, we are taking a different approach with these seven characters and have been consulting with members of the dwarfism community. We look forward to sharing more as the film heads into production after a lengthy development period.

Not everyone agreed with Dinklage’s statement, with some saying that it potentially took away acting opportunities from those in the dwarfism community. Jackass‘s Jason “Wee Man” Acuña said “You’re replacing jobs that people could have as little people. It’s for dwarfs. Why are you hiring ‘Snow White and the seven average people’?

The Snow White remake stars Rachel Zegler in the title role, alongside Gal Gadot as the Evil Queen, Ansu Kabia as the Huntsman, and Andrew Burnap as Jonathan, a new character created for the film.

Marc Webb, Bermuda Triangle movie

Marc Webb, best known for helming The Amazing Spider-Man and its sequel, has signed on to direct the long-in-development Bermuda Triangle movie at Skydance Media.

The Bermuda Triangle is a region in the western part of the North Atlantic Ocean where a number of aircraft and ships have disappeared under mysterious circumstances over the centuries. The theories behind these disappearances range from plausible explanations, such as extreme weather and currents, to the paranormal, with everything from UFOs to parallel universes to technology from the lost city of Atlantis taking the blame. Plenty of possibilities for a movie.

The Bermuda Triangle movie has been in development at Skydance for quite some time, with Sam Raimi and Scott Derrickson both attached to direct the project at various points. However, it seems that the project has gone back to square one. Deadline reports the project is still in the early stages with no writer attached. That will be the case until the WGA strike is resolved. Once development is able to proceed, Marc Webb will consult with the writer on the Bermuda Triangle script but isn’t expected to co-write. David Ellison, Dana Goldberg, and Don Granger will produce for Skydance, with Aimee Rivera overseeing the project.

Before Mark Webb finds himself lost in the Bermuda Triangle, his next project to be released is Disney’s live-action remake of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. The remake stars Rachel Zegler in the title role, alongside Gal Gadot as the Evil Queen, Ansu Kabia as the Huntsman, and Andrew Burnap as Jonathan, a new character created for the film. There seems to have been a backlash against the remake since it was first announced, from the casting of Rachel Zegler as Snow White to the removal of almost all the dwarf characters. The son of the original movie’s director even said that Walt Disney and his father would be “turning in their graves” over the project.

Snow White will hit theaters on March 22, 2024.

Snow White, remake controversy

The upcoming remake of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs is just one of the many live-action adaptations Disney has made of their animated classics, but this one seems to be hitting a nerve.

While speaking with The Telegraph, David Hale Hand, son of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs supervising director David Dodd Hand, is very much opposed to the remake. “I mean, it’s a whole different concept, and I just totally disagree with it, and I know my dad and Walt would also very much disagree with it,” Hand said. “There’s no respect for what Disney did and what my dad did… I think Walt and he would be turning in their graves.

I find it quite frankly a bit insulting [what] they may have done with some of these classic films.

David Hale Hand said that instead of remaking the old stories, Disney should be creating new ones. “[Disney] shouldn’t be taking a classic and rewriting it in their own image,” he said. “Pick on something else… create new characters, if you’re gonna do this, but don’t destroy or try to destroy something that is a classic and is a beautiful piece.

The Snow White remake stars Rachel Zegler in the title role, alongside Gal Gadot as the Evil Queen, Ansu Kabia as the Huntsman, and Andrew Burnap as Jonathan, a new character created for the film. Snow White will hit theaters on March 22, 2024.

In news that will shock absolutely no one with access to the internet, the casting of Black actress Halle Bailey as Ariel in Disney’s upcoming The Little Mermaid has sparked immediate controversy. But naysayers and racists aren’t the only ones with a voice. Joining a growing list, Trevor Noah has jumped to Bailey’s defense.

On a recent episode of The Daily Show, Trevor Noah called out the backlash. Noting the inconsistencies of arguments that Halle Bailey looks “nothing like” Ariel, he recommended looking at the tail and red hair. In other words, Halle Bailey looks “nothing like” the Ariel they’ve seen before–but why should the 1989 animated version be the only one?

“Once again, a bunch of internet racists are upset that a fictional character is being played by a Black person. This is so ridiculous…You guys realize that Nemo was Black too, right? Yeah! The whole movie was about a fish that can’t find his dad.”

Playing into stereotypes may weaken Trevor Noah’s defense, but he raises a point overall about The Little Mermaid‘s casting. The character is fictional, just as the story is, and so why shouldn’t a Black actress be able to play a mermaid?

The Little Mermaid trailer debuted at D23 and has over 18 million views as of publication. However, it also has 1.5 million dislikes (available to see through a browser extension, according to Forbes)–and it’s not because we don’t see Ursula.

On the plus side, Halle Bailey’s casting has inspired young people of color, who are finally seeing Disney princesses who look like them, as seen in the below video shared by Bailey.

Backlash over casting non-white people in such roles is becoming more and more common in Disney productions, particularly as they relate to their live-action takes on animated classics. After being announced as Snow White, Rachel Zegler was also the target of trolls.

What are your thoughts on all of this backlash? Does it matter the race of the performer for such a role? Let us know in the comments below!

Gal Gadot can be a hero or villain, from Wonder Woman to the Evil Queen. With her latest venture, a new take on Snow White, Gal Gadot put herself into the antagonist’s shoes (heels?–what does that lady wear anyhow?), playing nasty on set.

“I truly felt people were intimidated by me” on the set, Gal Gadot told People. “Everything was very, not aggressive, but it was very intimidating. But to be that character just feels great, because you feel like it’s effective in the story.”

Co-star Rachel Zegler, who plays Snow White, agreed. “It’s very intimidating…And it was also the black lipstick, it was the nails, it was the lashes.”

But there’s more to the Evil Queen than just looks. Gal Gadot wanted to ensure audiences knew there was some dimension to her Snow White character. “I wanted to make sure that we keep her delightful and delicious, and we understand what makes her tick. Then the evilness is interesting, and not just flat.” Gadot certainly has a commanding presence on screen–except for that godawful “Imagine” video–so her inclusion in Snow White should bring a lot of personality to the Evil Queen.

So far, Gal Gadot has sidestepped any Snow White casting backlash. Disney’s new iteration of the classic Snow White has faced numerous controversies over its casting. Part of it came in Rachel Zegler as Snow White, as online trolls were critical of a Latina being cast. Zegler replied, “Never in a million years did I imagine that this would be a possibility for me. You don’t normally see Snow Whites that are of Latin descent…I have a job to do that I’m really excited to do. I get to be a Latina princess.”

Peter Dinklage, who isn’t even in the movie, was more upset at how Disney was being forward-thinking in one facet–casting a Latina as Snow White–but not in others. “You’re progressive in one way and you’re still making that f–king backwards story about seven dwarfs living in a cave together, what the f–k are you doing man?”

While no official release date has been set, Marc Webb’s Snow White is scheduled for 2024.

Rachel Zegler is currently having the moment of her life as the star of Steven Spielberg’s West Side Story. Zegler was unknown before being cast in the musical remake and now, due to the film receiving raves from critics, she could be in the conversation for a potential Oscar nomination. Disney was so impressed with Rachel Zegler’s dailies from West Side Story that they cast her in their Snow White live-action remake as the titular character. The casting led to the inevitable comments from trolls who took issue that a Latina actress was chosen for the role and now Zegler is addressing some of the backlash she faced after the announcement was made.

Rachel Zegler recently took part in a dual interview for Variety with actor Andrew Garfield. During the conversation, Zegler was asked about the Snow White remake and she admits that she was more surprised than anyone that she landed the part:

“Never in a million years did I imagine that this would be a possibility for me. You don’t normally see Snow Whites that are of Latin descent. Even though Snow White is really a big deal in Spanish-speaking countries. Blanca Nieves is a huge icon whether you’re talking about the Disney cartoon or just different iterations and the Grimm fairy tale and all the stories that come with it. But you don’t particularly see people who look like me or are me playing roles like that. When it was announced, it was a huge thing that was trending on Twitter for days, because all of the people were angry.”

When it came to some of the more despicable comments about her casting, Zegler decided to just focus on the job at hand and ignore the Twitter backlash. The actress said, “We need to love them in the right direction. At the end of the day, I have a job to do that I’m really excited to do. I get to be a Latina princess.”

This is probably the best possible response she could give. Ignore the haters and just do the job that many believe you are 100% capable of doing. This should be celebrated as a huge opportunity for her rather than giving any power to the negativity that surrounded her being cast. Judging from her work in West Side Story, Zegler has a very bright future ahead of her.

Are you ready to see Rachel Zegler in the upcoming Snow White remake?

Peter Dinklage did not mince words when it came to Disney’s upcoming live-action Snow White remake and it looks like Disney has seemingly responded to some of his objections.

During a recent interview on Marc Maron’s “WTF” podcast, Dinklage addressed the Snow White remake by saying it made “no sense” how Disney would be progressive to an extent by casting a Latina actress to play Snow White (West Side Story’s Rachel Zegler) while ignoring the larger problem in the case of the titular dwarfs of the film. Here is what he had to say:

“I was a little taken aback when they were very proud to cast a Latina actress as Snow White. You’re still telling the story of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Take a step back and look at what you’re doing there. It makes no sense to me. You’re progressive in one way and you’re still making that f–king backwards story about seven dwarfs living in a cave together, what the f–k are you doing man? Have I done nothing to advance the cause from my soapbox? I guess I’m not loud enough.”

Dinklage went on to add, “I don’t know which studio that is but they were so proud of it. All love and respect to the actress and all the people who thought they were doing the right thing. But I’m just like, what are you doing?” The comments soon made headlines and they also began to trend across social media. It wasn’t long before Disney caught word of his remarks and it appears that they are acknowledging them. The company isn’t offering any specific details as to what will be different in the live-action version but they said they are taking steps to avoid “reinforcing stereotypes” that was featured in the original animated movie. They also said they are seeking guidance from “members of the dwarfism community.” Here is what Disney had to say in a statement to “Variety.”:

“To avoid reinforcing stereotypes from the original animated film, we are taking a different approach with these seven characters and have been consulting with members of the dwarfism community. We look forward to sharing more as the film heads into production after a lengthy development period.”

What we know so far about the Snow White remake is that Rachel Zegler will be playing the titular character and that Tony Award winner Andrew Burnap has also joined the film in a mystery role. The Disney film is getting a jolt of star power from Gal Gadot, who will be co-starring as the Evil Queen. Marc Webb is taking on directing duties while Benj Pasek and Justin Paul wrote the screenplay.

What are YOUR thoughts on Peter Dinklage’s opinions on the Snow White remake?

Is Gal Gadot the fairest one of all? Well, obviously, but the Wonder Woman actress is set to make it official as Deadline has reported that Gal Gadot is set to play the Evil Queen in Disney’s upcoming live-action adaptation of Snow White.

Snow White is one of the many live-action adaptations that Disney has in the works and this one has been in development for five years. Marc Webb (The Amazing Spider-Man) is directing the film with production expected to kick off in 2022. Rachel Zegler (West Side Story) is set to play Snow White, with Webb saying that “Rachel’s extraordinary vocal abilities are just the beginning of her gits. Her strength, intelligence, and optimism will become an integral part of rediscovering the joy in this classic Disney fairytale.

The search for an actress to play Snow White was a long one, but Deadline says that Disney was always keen on Gal Gadot playing the Evil Queen. It will be a fun change of pace to see Gal Gadot show off her dark side. Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, the pair behind La La Land, The Greatest Showman, and Dear Evan Hansen, are on board to write new songs for the movie, and that is part of the reason why it’s has taken so long to get off the ground – Disney wants to make sure that they get the music absolutely right.

Gal Gadot will next be seen in Red Notice, an action-comedy written and directed by Rawson Marshall Thurber. In addition to Gadot, Red Notice also stars Dwayne Johnson and Ryan Reynolds. The film finds Johnson playing an FBI profiler who is forced to partner with the world’s greatest art thief (Reynolds) in order to catch the world’s most wanted art thief (Gadot). The film is set for a limited theatrical release on November 5th before launching on Netflix on November 12th.

Rachel Zegler's breakout role as Maria in Steven Spielberg's retelling of West Side Story has yet to be seen but the young actress has already found her next big role. "Deadline" reports that Zegler is taped to play Snow White in Disney's live-action adaptation of the classic animated film. Marc Webb is set to direct with production expected to start in 2022.

Talking about Zegler, director Marc Webb said, "Rachel's extraordinary vocal abilities are just the beginning of her gits. Her strength, intelligence, and optimism will become an integral part of rediscovering the joy in this classic Disney fairytale." In addition to casting Zegler, Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, the duo behind La La Land, The Greatest Showman, and Dear Evan Hansen, will write new songs for the project. According to "Deadline", the reason the studio has taken its time on this adaptation is that they wanted to get the music just right. The higher-ups at the studio are said to be very excited about what the duo has come up with for the movie.

Zegler's auditions for the role impressed everyone at the studio but it was early footage seen from West Side Story, which is being released by Disney-owned 20th Century, that blew everyone away. Despite meeting with different talent for several months, Webb and studio execs kept coming back to Zegler and that pushed their decision to ultimately cast her. Zegler is no stranger to big auditions. The up-and-coming actress, as a 17-year-old high schooler, beat out more than 30,000 actresses for the role of Maria opposite Ansel Elgort and Rita Moreno in West Side Story. That film hits screens on December 10, 2021.

The casting is also in line with Disney diversifying their Disney Princess characters. This started with casting Halle Bailey to headline the upcoming live-action The Little Mermaid as Ariel and it continues with Zegler. The actress will also be seen joining Zachary Levin in DC's Shazam! Fury of the Gods. Talk about landing some serious big breaks.

What are YOUR thoughts on Rachel Zegler's casting as Snow White?
