Lionsgate gave the highly-anticipated action thriller Den of Thieves 2: Pantera a theatrical release last month, and now the film is available on Premium Video on Demand and Premium Electronic Sell-Through. (You can rent or buy it HERE.) To celebrate the PVOD release, we’ve gotten our hands on an EXCLUSIVE deleted scene from the film, and you can check it out in the embed above!

This sequel involves a balls-to-the-wall diamond heist in Europe, with ‘Big Nick’ O’Brien (Gerard Butler) and Donnie Wilson (O’Shea Jackson Jr.) burying the hatchet for a bullet-chewing-caper that could set them up for life. Here’s the official synopsis: In Den of Thieves 2: Pantera, Big Nick is back on the hunt on the mean streets of Europe, closing in on Donnie, who is embroiled in the dangerous world of diamond thieves and the infamous Panther mafia, as they plot a massive heist of the world’s biggest diamond exchange. The film was directed and written by Christian Gudegast, who also wrote and directed the first movie.

If you need a refresher on what the first movie was about, here’s that synopsis: A Los Angeles crime saga in the vein of HeatDen of Thieves follows the intersecting and often personally connected lives of an elite unit of the LA County Sheriff’s Dept. and the state’s most successful bank robbery crew as the outlaws plan a seemingly impossible heist on the Federal Reserve Bank of downtown Los Angeles.

Jordan Bridges (Den of ThievesMona Lisa Smile), Swen Temmel (The CovenantBoss Level), Evin Ahmad (Snabba CashBeyond Dreams), Yaen Zates Atour (The WitcherRobin Hood), Salvatore Esposito (FargoThe Perfect Dinner), Orli Shuka (Gangs of LondonWar Machine), and Rico Verhoeven (Black LotusUndercover) star alongside Butler and Jackson Jr. as primary cast members in Den of Thieves 2: Pantera.

Butler and Jackson Jr. are also producers on the film, producing alongside Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson, Mark Canton, Alan Siegel, and Tucker Tooley.

weekend box office 01

Mel Gibson’s Flight Risk has taken off to become #1 at the box office this week, pulling in $12 million during its debut. This is a pretty unimpressive number to head the box office, and considering Flight Risk had a budget of $25 million, it has a bit of a way to go to recoup its expenses. But those that did check it out over the weekend no doubt did so in part to support Gibson, who hasn’t directed a movie since 2016’s Hacksaw Ridge.

Flight Risk’s take – which we knew would help it get to #1 this weekend based on early projections – would also mean the dethroning of franchise fare at the 2025 box office so far. Even though we’re still in January (yes, we’re still in January…), it’s worth noting that there have only been sequels at the top of the box office so far this year: Mufasa: The Lion King (a late 2024 release) and Den of Thieves 2: Pantera, with the former obviously being the dominant picture.

Now in its sixth week, Mufasa wouldn’t yet retreat entirely into the jungle, earning $8.7 million, which was good enough for the number two spot, its second bump there so far. It has now grossed $221 million domestically. As for Den of Thieves 2, that ended up dropping all the way down to #9, a 55% tumble. Indeed, Flight Risk would be the only non-holdover from previous weeks to crack the top five. The only key debut this weekend, Steven Soderbergh’s Presence, managed $3.4 million, putting it at #6.

weekend box office 02

In the #3 spot was One of Them Days in its second week, taking in $8 million from its word of mouth, which helped it get #2 in its opening week. That spot saw it fending off returning sequels Sonic the Hedgehog 3, now in its sixth week, and Moana 2, in week nine. Those movies rounded out the top five with $5.5 and $4.3 million, respectively. Notably, both have already outgrossed their predecessors. Landing at #7 in its second week was Wolf Man, which underperformed in its debut weekend and disappointed in quality considering what had been done with Blumhouse’s The Invisible Man.

Oscar contenders also left their mark towards the bottom of the top 10, with A Complete Unknown – James Mangold’s biopic on Bob Dylan, earning eight nominations – landing at #8 with $3.1 million. Meanwhile, The Brutalist – which could be on its way to a Best Picture victory and Best Actor statue for Adrien Brody – coming in at the bottom spot with $2.87. That’s not an incredible showing for The Brutalist. Still, we’re glad it is finally opening up to more theaters (it added nearly 800 this week) after having peaked at just seven during its Oscar-eligible opening.

weekend box office 03

Next week, we will see the wide releases of Universal’s animated Dog Man, the Briarcliff action flick Valiant One, and New Line horror Companion, which could get a little bump from IMAX. Worth mentioning, too, is You’re Cordially Invited. Even though it will be on Amazon Prime Video, You’re Cordially Invited is yet another reminder of the state of the theater vs. streaming war, as Will Ferrell and Reese Witherspoon would’ve made bank together back in the day.

As for the weeks after that, we won’t have powerhouse franchise movies until next month, with Captain America: Brave New World and Paddington in Peru arriving on February 14th (after Paddington’s run in its native U.K.). Additionally, The Day the Earth Blew Up is dropping on February 28th, letting us see just how well a Looney Tunes pic can do on the big screen.

What did you catch at the movies this weekend? Which movies do you expect to round out the top five next week?

den of thieves

Den of Thieves 2: Pantera is kicking off the year as 2025’s first number-one movie. It’s also Lionsgate’s first box office topper in over a year. The heist film reportedly made a $15.5 million gross on opening weekend. It opened in line with the 2018 original (not adjusted for inflation). It likely would have performed even better were it not for the horrific wildfires currently decimating large parts of Los Angeles. The movie marks Gerard Butler’s strongest opening since Angel Has Fallen back in 2019.

As the first film became a modest hit (which would collect more fans later in its release life) and got a sequel, could a third movie be in the books for this franchise? Christian Gudegast, the writer and director of both the first and second, says so. And this is despite the hardships that come from making these movies. When he spoke to The Hollywood Reporter, he was inquired about if he would pitch a threequel to the studio and Gudegast revealed, “It’s already pitched. It’s already done. We’re ready to go.” When the first two movies suffered long-gestating developments that were out of its control, THR asked if they should knock on wood so that it would be greenlit. Gudegast responded, “We’re feeling very good about it. But, sure, knock on wood. It doesn’t hurt.”

The hardships that came with the development of the movies meant it would be 15 years until the first film hit the big screen and seven years for the sequel. For Pantera, Gudegast explained, “We were ramping up to start, but then Covid hit.  We were just about to ramp up again after coming out of Covid, but then we had a bad injury to one of our leads [Gerard Butler]. So that was another nine or ten months, and then we were probably going to go shoot it in Croatia and Serbia. But then the war with Ukraine hit, and we had to move out of that zone because everyone from the Ukraine went down to where we were going to shoot it. There were literally no hotels or Airbnbs available to house the crew. Then, we went to France, but the exchange rate changed and the tax credit in France didn’t work. Ultimately, we ended up in Tenerife. So we had many, many hurdles, production-wise, and that was really the challenge.”

weekend box office 01

Lionsgate, which had a disastrous 2024 thanks to duds like Borderlands and The Crow, are having a good start to 2025, with Den of Thieves 2: Pantera opening in first place at the box office. With Deadline reporting a $15.5 million gross, it opened in line with the 2018 original (not adjusted for inflation). It likely would have performed even better were it not for the horrific wildfires currently decimating large parts of Los Angeles. The movie marks Gerard Butler’s strongest opening since Angel Has Fallen back in 2019, proving once again that he’s a consistent draw in these meat-and-potatoes action flicks.

Mufasa: The Lion King didn’t hold up quite as well post-holidays as we thought it would in our predictions, with it falling 44% to $13.2 million, with a $187 million domestic total. That’s only a fraction of the $600 million plus grossed by its 2019 predecessor. Sonic the Hedgehog 3 came in third with $11 million for a $200 million plus total, making it the highest-grossing entry in the series thus far.

The script Robert Eggers wrote for his remake of the horror classic Nosferatu has been officially released online

Meanwhile, Focus Features is proving to have a major box office hit with Robert Eggers’s Nosferatu, which grossed $6.8 million for an $81 million total. It’s currently Focus Features’s third highest-grossing domestic release of all time, behind Downton Abbey and Coraline. Moana 2 was right behind with $6.5 million for a $434 million total, while Wicked continued to pull in impressive numbers, with a $5 million weekend and a massive $458.9 million total.

Searchlight’s A Complete Unknown also grossed $5 million this weekend, pushing its total past $50 million, making it the studio’s highest-grossing domestic release in many years. While it hasn’t been a massive hit like director James Mangold’s previous biopic, Walk the Line, it will turn a handsome profit for the studio and should play well into award season. A24’s Babygirl has also proven to be a solid success, making $3.09 million for a $21.7 million domestic gross. While that’s not a huge number, it’s one of the most successful indie releases of the season, with it outgrossing a lot of the year’s more lauded awards fare. The Indian film Game Changer came in ninth place with $1.8 million, and the Pamela Anderson comeback film The Last Showgirl rounded out the top 10 with $1.5 million. Meanwhile, the $100 million Robbie Williams biopic Better Man landed with a thud outside the box office top 10, grossing $1 million.

The Brutalist

By comparison, The Brutalist, which is only playing on 68 screens compared to Better Man’s wide release, managed to outgross it with $1.35 million, boding well for its gradual expansion over award season. One of the reasons A24’s The Brutalist is having a slow roll-out is the fact that it’s getting a roadshow release in 70mm at elect venues before a conventional release. With it earning multiple Golden Globes, it will likely earn a ton of Oscar nominations this Friday, and should help it turn into a solid hit for the studio despite the grim subject matter. It’s a masterfully made film, so if you can see it in 70mm, I highly recommend it.

Next weekend sees the release of The Wolf Man, which should easily take the top spot at the box office. Let us know in the comments if you plan to check it out!

Den of Thieves 2 Better Man

It’s no secret that Lionsgate’s had a rough year at the box office. The mini-major is in bad shape after suffering pricey flops like Borderlands and The Crow. However, they’re scoring a much-needed win this weekend, with Den of Thieves 2: Pantera expected to finish in first place with a $15 million opening (about $3 million more than we predicted). That opening is in line with what the first film made back in 2018 and is a significant improvement over the last two Gerard Butler action flicks, Plane and Kandahar. The general thinking is that if it were not for the tragic Los Angeles wildfires, the film would have opened even higher, but even still, $15 million is a decent start for a movie that should have a long life on streaming.

According to Deadline, Mufasa: The Lion King is a distant second, with $11 million plus, while Sonic the Hedgehog 3 should be in third with just over $8 million. Nosferatu is in 4th place with $6.3 million (with a terrific $81 million total), while Moana 2 is just behind it with $5.9 million.

However, Paramount’s Robbie Williams biopic, Better Man, has proven to be a complete disaster at the box office, with it only on track for $1 million despite playing on over 1200 screens. By comparison, Brady Corbett’s The Brutalist is set to earn the same amount on only 68 screens. The Last Showgirl, starring Pamela Anderson, is set to make about $1.35 million on less than half the amount of screens. Truly, this is a dire amount for a movie that was also bombed in the UK, where Robbie Williams is a household name. Given the $100 million plus budget, this will go down as a pricey flop, even if it’s quite a good film. So what happened? Williams’s appeal isn’t on the same level as someone like Bob Dylan (whose biopic, A Complete Unknown, has fared well), Elton John, Queen or Elvis. The fact that a CGI monkey plays him was maybe too big of a swing for director Michael Gracey, even if I have a hunch this will become a cult film down the line.

What are you watching this weekend? Will you be contributing to the box office of Den of Thieves 2 or Better Man?

A batch of exclusive images from Den of Thieves 2: Pantera feature the characters played by Gerard Butler and O'Shea Jackson Jr.

January releases are here. Normally, the month is a dumping ground for films that studios have little faith in to become moneymakers. However, that is not to say that enjoyable films can’t come out in January. Den of Thieves 2: Pantera was enjoyed by our Chris Bumbray in his review despite not being a big fan of the first film. Other critics have been giving the action heist sequel a lukewarm reception as the movie currently sports a fresh 67% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Deadline now reports that the Thursday previews for the Gerard Butler/O’shea Jackson Jr. film has taken in $1.35 million in early Thursday previews. Showtimes started yesterday at 6 pm and the appeal of the sequel doesn’t cast a notably wide net as an R-rated heist film. Additionally, Los Angeles, which is the largest market in the country, will affect the numbers as the city is currently in a state of emergency. Other places in the U.S. are also being hit with winter weather that discourages people from leaving home. The movie is projected to hit $11 million-$13 million at 3,008 theaters.

In his review, our EIC had a blast with the movie as he says, “I enjoyed Den of Thieves 2: Pantera much more than I thought I would. With the sunny European locales and international flavor, it’s the perfect mid-level January release and should prove popular enough among Butler’s fans that I wouldn’t be surprised if we eventually get a third movie in the series. It’s surprisingly fun!”

And recently, the film’s star, Butler, revealed that he was coming off of surgery when filming the movie. “This was a weird time for me at the beginning of this movie because I’d been through a pretty intense surgery, and then I tore my ACL fully about a month later and then started this movie,” Butler said. “So I was not in the best shape, and it was a pretty physical movie, and I didn’t have a chance to get the surgery on my ACL, so I made this movie with a freshly torn ACL, and it was pretty rough.“

Butler continued, “But yeah… I wanted to put a ‘but’ in to make it sound positive, but it wasn’t positive; it was a nightmare! And I was a whiny little bitch!“

PLOT: After his life is ruined in the wake of his reckless behavior, LASD cop Nick O’Brien (Gerard Butler) heads to Antwerp to track down his former foe, Donnie Wilson (O’Shea Jackson Jr.). However, instead of revenge, Nick wants to cash in and joins forces with him to rob the World Diamond Center.

REVIEW: I wasn’t the world’s biggest fan of the original Den of Thieves. It felt like a lame retread of Heat, albeit without any of Michael Mann’s style and substance – but hey, what do I know? Against all odds, the original film was a sizeable hit, so here we are six years later with a sequel, Den of Thieves 2: Pantera. I wasn’t expecting much but I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed this slick sequel, which, to me, had a unique, Euro-style vibe that felt fresh in the way its predecessor didn’t.

Set in Belgium, the film revolves around O’Shea Jackson Jr’s Donnie building a European crew to rip off the Antwerp World Diamond Center. Writer-director Christian Gudegast, who returns from the original film, was inspired by a real-life heist that occurred back in 2003. He does a nice job making this a more grounded heist film than usual, with him avoiding the over-the-top elements one might expect in the wake of the Fast Saga, to which this has a few similarities, most notably how Gerard Butler’s character figures into the plot.

In the first film, Butler’s Nick O’Brien was such a comically over-the-top, hyper-macho protagonist that the movie was hard to take seriously, with him coming off as almost cartoonish. Yet, in the sequel, they show that his behaviour had some real consequences, with it costing him his job and his family, with his wife filing for divorce and taking the kids. Thus, the movie has him throw in his lot with Donnie and his gang, opting to help them pull off their heist for a cut that will set him up for life.

Gerard Butler, Den of Thieves 2: Pantera, ACL

Now, Den of Thieves 2: Pantera isn’t perfect, with the biggest flaw in the movie being how quickly Jackson’s Donnie buys Nick’s story and cuts him into the gang. He’s supposed to be a genius-level mastermind, so it’s hard to swallow him taking Nick at his word, considering how few scruples his former antagonist had in the first film. Yet, it does give Butler and Jackson the chance to build some buddy movie chemistry, which, coupled with the Euro-locale, helps make the sequel a lot more fun than the original.

In recent years, Butler’s excelled in making mid-level action films, with his world-weary characters less glamourous and more believable than many other action heroes of note. In a Butler movie, he won’t always have the upper hand on all the bad guys, and despite now being a crook, he’s oddly more sympathetic than he was in the first film. He’s a guy who’s dealing with the consequences of his choices, and Butler plays him with just the right amount of machismo and humour. By comparison, Jackson has less to work with but seems to be having a ball in his buddy scenes with Butler and is convincing as the “brains” behind the heists, with him soft-spoken and cerebral compared to the ultra-testosterone-fueled Nick.

While, just like the original, Den of Thieves 2 is too long (running over 140 minutes), the pacing is tighter, thanks mostly to the fact that it’s much more focused than the original film. In Den of Thieves, Gudegast, in trying to pay homage to Mann, spent too much time on too many uninteresting side characters to give them pathos. He doesn’t get caught in that trap here, with Butler and/or Jackson rarely offscreen. It all builds up to a climactic heist sequence that’s punctuated by a nifty car chase/ shootout that’s very well-executed, even if the movie ends on a note that most action connoisseurs probably already have figured out just based on the trailers.

All said, I enjoyed Den of Thieves 2: Pantera much more than I thought I would. With the sunny European locales and international flavour, it’s the perfect mid-level January release and should prove popular enough among Butler’s fans that I wouldn’t be surprised if we eventually get a third movie in the series. It’s surprisingly fun!

Filming an action movie is no walk in the park, but filming an action movie with a serious injury sounds like a nightmare. While speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Gerard Butler revealed that he shot Den of Thieves 2: Pantera with a freshly torn ACL. Ouch.

This was a weird time for me at the beginning of this movie because I’d been through a pretty intense surgery, and then I tore my ACL fully about a month later and then started this movie,” Butler said. “So I was not in the best shape, and it was a pretty physical movie, and I didn’t have a chance to get the surgery on my ACL, so I made this movie with a freshly torn ACL, and it was pretty rough.

Butler continued, “But yeah… I wanted to put a ‘but’ in to make it sound positive, but it wasn’t positive; it was a nightmare!” And I was a whiny little bitch!

Butler stars alongside O’Shea Jackson Jr. in the Den of Thieves sequel, which finds Big Nick (Butler) back on the hunt in Europe and closing in on Donnie (Jackson), who is embroiled in the treacherous and unpredictable world of diamond thieves and the infamous Panther mafia, as they plot a massive heist of the world’s largest diamond exchange. You can check out our own interview with Butler and Jackson Jr. right here, as well as a sit down with writer/director Christian Gudagast and producer Tucker Tooley. You’ll also get to see our own JimmyO step behind the wheel of a Porsche and speed around the track.

The first film was released in 2018 and grossed $80 million worldwide. Despite the mixed reviews it received upon release, the film has since grown a sizable cult following. Butler previously teased that the Den of Thieves sequel would be a “more glamorous journey” than the first film and “more fun [&] sexy.” We won’t have long to wait to find out for ourselves as Den of Thieves 2: Pantera is set to hit theaters on January 10th. After a strong holiday season, the box office seems set to slow down this weekend, with the only new release being Den of Thieves 2: Pantera, starring Gerard Butler and O’Shea Jackson Jr. The original film opened with a better-than-expected $15 million on its way to a $44 million domestic total. Pantera isn’t expected to open quite as well, and I’m predicting it will open in line with Butler’s own Plane, which made just over $10 million almost exactly two years ago (although that was the more lucrative MLK Jr weekend – which doesn’t happen this year until next week).

I’d expect Den of Thieves 2: Pantera to make about $12 million, and come in just behind Mufasa: The Lion King, which should make about $15 million. Number three will likely go to Sonic the Hedgehog 3, which will make about $10 million.

The other big new release this weekend is Better Man, the Robbie Williams biopic which recasts the singer with a CGI Chimpanzee. Truth be told, I absolutely loved this movie (read my review), but the box office outlook isn’t good. Better Man opened in limited release over the holidays, and its per-screen average has been poor, with it only making $26k on six screens last weekend. The fact is, in North America, Williams just doesn’t have a big following, and the unusual way it’s filmed might turn off more viewers than it will attract.

As such, expect the top five to be rounded out by two holdovers – Nosferatu and Moana 2. Otherwise, I wouldn’t expect too much from the weekend box office, especially given the horrific wildfires in Los Angeles, so this will be a largely uneventful, quiet weekend before The Wolf Man sweeps in for next weekend’s MLK Day.

Here are our predictions:

  1. Mufasa: The Lion King: $15 million
  2. Den of Thieves 2: Pantera: $12 million
  3. Sonic the Hedgehog 3: $10 million
  4. Nosferatu: $8 million
  5. Moana 2: $7 million

What are you seeing this weekend? Will you be adding to the box office of Mufasa, Den of Thieves 2, Sonic the Hedgehog 3, Nosferatu, Moana 2, or Better Man?

Last week, we gave you part one of our Porsche adventures and chatted with Tucker Tooley and Christian Gudegast on their latest. And now it’s time for the two fellas that earned a lot of love in Den of Thieves the first time around. Gerard Butler and O’Shea Jackson Jr. return for a bigger crime story, with a twist and turn or two. Den of Thieves 2: Pantera brings back Big Nick and Donnie Wilson, even after their rocky beginning. Den of Thieves 2 (look for our review Thursday evening) opens this Friday at a theatre near you.

Gerald Butler is fantastic to speak with. And talking to both he and O’Shea together is especially enjoyable. The two opened up about taking the story to a larger world and working together again. For Jackson, he opened up about his trouble with typecasting early in his career after Straight Outta Compton. The two actors were especially engaging, and the chemistry they have in the film is evident when you sit down for a conversation.

In 2018, audiences discovered an action movie treat. That flick was Den of Thieves, and it starred the still charming as hell. Gerard Butler and the terrific O’Shea Jackson Jr. were an instant win for both audiences and critics alike. So it’s not surprising that the feature would get the sequel treatment. And much like the first, Den of Thieves 2: Pantera reunites Butler and Jackson. The bigger sequel continues to be in the capable hands of filmmaker Christian Gudegast, who also wrote the screenplay.

Porsche

While most movies plan their opening with interviews, the folks behind Den of Thieves had something a bit more adventurous in mind. I mean, we’re talkin’ speeding cars racing past 100 mph. And considering a certain car, make and model enjoys a certain amount of screentime. Mixing that with a bunch of journalists and influencers may sound crazy, but it was more than a whole lot of fun. A few weeks back, JoBlo was invited to return to the Porsche Driving Experience at the Porsche Experience Center Los Angeles. And it is beyond just a cool experience.

Den of Thieves 2

After checking in, each of us in attendance was assigned a driving coach. After that, we spent about thirty minutes on the course. If you’ve ever driven a Porsche, you know. These things handle the road so freaking beautifully that you almost forget just how fast you are actually going. However, I handled the course pretty damn well, if I do say so myself. And yes, I’m finding myself addicted to these cars.

JimmyO

For our first round of interviews, I had the pleasure of speaking to Christian Gudagast and Tucker Tooley. The two talked about bringing his team back for a second and the challenges of finally getting the sequel to theatres. It was fantastic chatting with these two, and we have more to bring you next week for interviews with Gerard Butler and O’Shea Jackson Jr! It was a blast! Check out Den of Thieves 2: Pantera opening on January 10, 2025!

2025 Movie Preview

With 2024 coming to a close, it’s time to start looking to the future for our cinema needs. What does the year hold in store for us cinephiles? While 2024 held some surprise hits, giant blockbusters, and small films that could, it’s looking like 2025 movie releases will hold more of the same. We can hope that the good fortune that Hollywood has brought us will continue into the new year and keep theater attendance up. Here’s our 2025 Movie Preview:

Den of Thieves: Pantera

Den Of Thieves: Pantera – January 10

Gerard Butler is back chasing down diamond thieves on the streets of Europe. He stumbles across the planning of the largest diamond heist ever planned. If you liked the first movie, then this will probably be more of the same. I’m personally happy that Gerard Butler is making some fun B-movie action films like back in the day. Plane was fun, and I’m excited to see these types of films at the theater again.

better man

Better Man – January 10

A biopic about UK pop star Robbie Williams as we see his childhood all the way through his superstardom. Robbie will be playing himself, but how do you do that without it being weird? What if you make it so he’s a chimp? Sure. With Pharrell releasing his biopic as a Lego movie and now Robbie Williams replacing himself with a CGI chimp it seems biopics are really trying to gain quirk appeal.

Back in Action, release, Netflix, Jamie Foxx, Cameron Diax, first-look images

Back In Action – January 17

Cameron Diaz is coming out of retirement and teaming up with Jamie Foxx for this Netflix original film. They play former CIA agents who are pulled back in when their identities are exposed. While I’m glad to see Diaz back on screen after a decade away, it’s odd that this generic spy action movie did it. Maybe just the idea of being in a movie with Jamie Foxx again was enough.

Michelle Yeoh, Star Trek: Section 31, first look

Star Trek: Section 31 – January 24

This direct to Paramount+ film is a spin off from Star Trek: Discovery starring Michelle Yeoh as her character Philippa Georgiou. This was originally planned as a series, but after COVID-19 delays, it was scrapped. Later they revived the idea for an original movie. Star Trek has always been a beloved franchise but with new movies going direct to streaming, will we ever see them return to the big screen?

bridget jones, isla fisher, jim broadbent, nico parker

Bridget Jones: Mad About The Boy – February 13

For the first time in nine years, Bridget Jones is back! Only this time, it will be on Peacock in the United States and then in theaters everywhere else in the world. Seems backwards but okay. Bridget Jones is now a single mom and trying to figure out how that works when you’re trying to get back into the dating pool. Renee Zellweger and Hugh Grant return, along with some other familiar faces. Are we past the Bridget Jones fandom, or is there still more life in this franchise?

Captain America: Brave New World, Red Hulk

Captain America: Brave New World – February 14

After the events of Falcon And The Winter Soldier, Anthony Mackie is donning the shield as the new Captain America. Harrison Ford steps in for the late William Hurt as the new President Ross, who has a big red secret to share. Marvel only had one release last summer, and it seemed to work really well for them. Let’s see if something without Hugh Jackman’s claws still registers for Marvel fans.

2025 Movie Preview

Mickey 17 – March 7

The new film from Bong Joon-ho sees Robert Pattinson sent on a space mission because he is seen as expendable. With technology, he can be regenerated if something goes wrong. This time, something goes wrong, and he begins to experience an existential crisis. This darkly comedic film looks like a good time as we see Mickey die in numerous different ways and still have to get up to go to work the next day.

black bag

Black Bag – March 14

Steven Soderberg’s spy thriller is coming out with no details on the plot. With a cast that includes Michael Fassbender, Cate Blanchett, and Pierce Brosnan, you can bet lots of people will be interested in checking it out. Soderberg has always had an interesting take on just about any film he releases, and this will be no different.

Snow White

Snow White – March 21

Disney continues its trend of doing live-action remakes of its old animated films. This one caused a stir when it was announced, as people seemed divided on how to handle the seven dwarfs aspect of the film. Ultimately, the dwarves will be completely CGI. It will be interesting to see how this plays in a modern culture. Expect some new songs, and Gal Gadot will be playing the evil queen, which is inspired casting compared to the look of the original character.

2025 Movie Preview

A Minecraft Movie – April 4

With Super Mario Bros. and the Sonic movies being big hits, it’s no surprise that the hugely popular game Minecraft would be getting its own movie. Jack Black once again jumps on board to play Steve, the generic character most players take control of when booting up Minecraft. Jason Mamoa, Jennifer Coolidge, and Kate McKinnon round out the cast as random characters are pulled into the cubic world and need the help of an expert crafter to get home. Seems very Jumanji.

The Accountant 2, release date

The Accountant 2 – April 25

I don’t think anyone saw this sequel coming. In the first film, Ben Affleck played a neuro-divergent accountant who had a side job as a hitman. The film was a modest hit but nothing that would seem to warrant a sequel. Some other familiar faces from the first one return.

Thunderbolts*

Thunderbolts* – May 2

The second of Marvel’s offerings this year sees a bunch of cast-off characters from previous Marvel films being rounded up for a new agency. Yelena will be leading the team of previous supervillains who are now taking jobs for the government. Of course, this will be complicated by a lot of in-fighting and some unexpected speedbumps. The trailer makes this look like a lot of fun so here’s hoping it will give MCU fans some laughs while providing some great action scenes.

2025 Movie Preview

Lilo & Stitch – May 23

This is the second of Disney’s live-action remakes. Stitch crash-lands on Earth and is adopted by a young girl. Hijinks ensue as others come looking for him. The original had a great sense of humor, and the trailers showing Stitch invading other Disney properties were great. I have no idea if this will translate well into live-action, but kids will probably love it.

mission impossible

Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning – May 23

This was originally titled Dead Reckoning Part II, but after the last film underperformed, the title was quickly changed. It will continue the storyline from the last film, and we see Ethan Hunt trying to stop the deadly AI from causing worldwide chaos. Of course in order to shut it down, they have to make their way to the submarine that is crashed on the ocean floor.

Karate Kid: Legends

Karate Kid: Legends – May 30

The franchise returns to the big screen as we see Daniel from the original and Mr. Han from the 2010 “remake” join forces to mentor a new student. It’s a strange crossing of the streams which retcons the remake into being set in the same continuity. With Cobra Kai just ending when this hits theaters, will fans even care enough to go check it out? Fans of the original movie got their nostalgia fix with the series. Are there people who have nostalgia for the 2010 movie?

Ballerina

From The World Of John Wick: Ballerina – June 6

The spin-off of the John Wick films hits the big screen. We were introduced to the Ballerinas in John Wick 3. Now they get a film all their own while Keanu Reeves will still make an appearance since this is set during that time period. Ana de Armas takes over the role of Eve as she looks to get revenge on the people who killed her family. The intricate world of John Wick is fascinating to explore, and this gives us a chance to see even more of it.

2025 Movie Preview

Elio – June 13

An animated film from Disney that follows Elio. He’s a young space fanatic who gets tasked with saving the universe. They have been struggling to come up with animated films that really stick with audiences that aren’t already established Pixar properties. The shine of the early Pixar films has really dimmed after Disney bought them. Hopefully we can see Disney regain its footing with animated films like we used to have.

How to Train Your Dragon

How To Train Your Dragon – June 13

Dreamworks seems to be taking a cue from Disney and remaking some of their more popular animated properties. We’re getting another round of dragons as we see the first meeting of Hiccup and Toothless. Again. Not sure if this trend will ever end, but at least Dreamworks doesn’t have as deep of a catalog as Disney. When can we expect to see a live-action Kung Fu Panda?

Jurassic World Rebirth, Jurassic Park

Jurassic World: Rebirth – July 2

Scarlett Johanssen is taking the lead role this time around. No one seems to have learned any lesson about bringing dinosaurs back to life. This time it looks like explorers have to go in to get DNA samples from some prehistoric animals to help cure a disease. Universal really just wants to see if there is any juice left to squeeze out of this fruit. It may be time to let it sleep for a few decades before heading back in.

Superman

Superman – July 11

James Gunn takes his stab at the Man of Steel as the DC Universe reboots itself on-screen once again. Reports are that Gunn held an early screening for WB execs and that it did not go well. That could be internet fodder, but it doesn’t instill a lot of hope for the new version of the DCU. With the DC shows on the CW just wrapping up, we’ll have to see if Gunn’s Superman will connect with comic fans. The recent trailer seemed to gain a lot of views very quickly, so we at least know that fans are interested.

The Smurfs

The Smurfs Movie – July 18

Those magical little blue creatures will grace theater screens once again. This time, the film will be fully animated and musical. Paramount/Nickelodeon will take on the film, and it seems to be inspired by the popularity of the Troll movies. Rhianna will voice Smurfette and be joined by Nick Offerman, John Goodman, Kurt Russell, Dan Levy, and Hannah Waddingham.

fantastic four first steps

The Fantastic Four: First Steps – July 25

Marvel’s first family finally makes their way into the MCU. While they have been on-screen before as part of Fox’s Marvel movies, this time, we’ll see what the MCU has in store for the group. Marvel’s third film in six months will really test if audiences are in superhero fatigue or not. The early footage shown at Comicon seems fun, so hopefully, it will bring something new.

Liam Neeson, The Naked Gun remake

Naked Gun – August 1

Liam Neeson is hoping to try something drastically different than we’ve seen from him before. He has some big shoes to fill, as Leslie Nielsen based the whole second half of his career on the original Naked Gun. It will be hard to see anyone else trying to play that role. Plus, does that type of comedy have a place anymore?

Freakier Friday

Freakier Friday – August 8

Disney’s calendar of releases this year is crazy, as we see the reteaming of Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan. The last film was a remake of an old Disney Classic. Now, twenty-one years later, we are getting a sequel. Expect more body-swapping jokes as the Lindsay Lohan resurgence seems to be taking shape. She’s been on an upswing lately, and hopefully, we can see her get a victory lap as she has matured.

Nobody

Nobody 2 – August 15

Somehow, Bob Odenkirk became an action star after starring in Nobody back in 2021. Now, we get to see some more middle-aged dad action as he returns for this sequel. The first movie really worked to show what appears to be an ordinary man who decides to get back into a life he left a long time ago. Now that we have seen him for what he really is, here’s hoping for more action and more Christopher Lloyd running around with a shotgun.

Downton Abbey a new era review

Downton Abbey 3 – September 12

The third film spin-off of the popular period drama. Many of the cast return to once again play their characters, showing the divide between the upper class and the working class. This drama captivated audiences when it first premiered, and both previous films have been big hits. It only makes sense to keep it going with another film.

Tron Ares

Tron: Ares – October 10

We’re traveling back into the world of Tron. Jeff Bridges is back, along with a slew of other familiar faces like Jodie Turner-Smith, Evan Peters, and Jared Leto. This time, a program is sent from the digital world to the real world. Each Tron film so far has pushed the boundaries in terms of special effects and technical marvels. Let’s see what they come up with this time.

Mortal Kombat

Mortal Kombat 2 – October 24

We’re heading back to the arcade, so get your quarters ready. The reboot of the Mortal Kombat franchise continues as our heroes are heading back to Outland to continue the fight for all existence. The last film was released during the pandemic, so a true gauge of the popularity is hard to judge, but audiences seem to have a positive response. During the initial film franchise run, the second entry pushed it off a cliff. We can hope they learned their lesson.

Now You See Me 3, release

Now You See Me 3 – November 14

Another entry into the magic mystery franchise is in the pipeline. All of our sleight-of-hand artists are returning, but no plot has been released so far. The previous movies have gained an audience through their unique use of stage magic and illusions to foil their adversaries. It is a fun and interesting way of doing a mystery based action film. If it lives up to the previous entries, then audiences should leave the theater happy.

Wicked: Part Two, Wicked: For Good

Wicked: For Good – November 21

The second part of the recent smash hit. Those who haven’t seen the Broadway play or read the book will get to see how the story ends. I expect more fantastic songs, some great visuals, and more Oz. We all need all the Oz we can get. Let’s all get ready to defy gravity once again.

2025 Movie Preview

Zootopia 2 – November 26

Disney has quite the release schedule this year, and we’re not even done yet. Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde are teaming up to solve a wild case that could change their entire lives. It will be fun to travel back into the world of Zootopia and see where the characters are. It looks like more of the same fun we had in the last film.

Zoe Saldaña, Avatar: Fire and Ash

Avatar: Fire And Ash – December 19

It’s time to head back to Pandora. Last time James Cameron dealt with water motifs and explored more of the world. Looks like we’ll be dealing with fire this time around. While the films seem to always be a wonder of motion capture and CGI, it would be great to see Cameron go back to other projects before his film career comes to an end. We can always hope.

Spongebob Squarepants

The SpongeBob Movie: Search For SquarePants – December 19

Hey Kids! SpongeBob is back with another movie. This time, he will explore the depths of the ocean to deal with the ghost of the Flying Dutchman. This franchise just keeps engaging generation after generation. At this point, The Simpsons might be about the only animated franchise that has lasted longer. As long as fans keep checking out the movies, the more they will keep making.

Lionsgate will be giving the highly-anticipated action thriller Den of Thieves 2: Pantera a theatrical release on January 10th – and with that date right around the corner, we’ve gotten our hands on a batch of EXCLUSIVE images from the film that feature stars Gerard Butler and O’Shea Jackson Jr., highlighting the “buddy” dynamic their characters have in this sequel. You can check the images out at the bottom of this article.

If you need a refresher on what the first movie was about, here’s that synopsis: A Los Angeles crime saga in the vein of Heat, Den of Thieves follows the intersecting and often personally connected lives of an elite unit of the LA County Sheriff’s Dept. and the state’s most successful bank robbery crew as the outlaws plan a seemingly impossible heist on the Federal Reserve Bank of downtown Los Angeles.

Jordan Bridges (Den of ThievesMona Lisa Smile), Swen Temmel (The CovenantBoss Level), Evin Ahmad (Snabba CashBeyond Dreams), Yaen Zates Atour (The WitcherRobin Hood), Salvatore Esposito (FargoThe Perfect Dinner), Orli Shuka (Gangs of LondonWar Machine), and Rico Verhoeven (Black LotusUndercover) star alongside Butler and Jackson Jr. as primary cast members in Den of Thieves 2: Pantera.

Butler and Jackson Jr. are also producers on the film, producing alongside Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson, Mark Canton, Alan Siegel, and Tucker Tooley.

Are you a fan of Den of Thieves, and are you looking forward to seeing Den of Thieves 2: Pantera next month? Check out the exclusive images, then let us know by leaving a comment below.

Lionsgate is here to give you a shot in the arm with the latest trailer for its highly-anticipated action-thriller Den of Thieves 2: Pantera. Directed and written by Christian Gudegast, the Den of Thieves 2: Pantera trailer presents a balls-to-the-wall diamond heist in Europe, with ‘Big Nick’ O’Brien (Gerard Butler) and Donnie Wilson (O’Shea Jackson Jr.) burying the hatchet for a bullet-chewing-caper that could set them up for life.

Here’s the official synopsis for Den of Thieves 2: Pantera:

In Den of Thieves 2: Pantera, Big Nick is back on the hunt on the mean streets of Europe, closing in on Donnie, who is embroiled in the dangerous world of diamond thieves and the infamous Panther mafia, as they plot a massive heist of the world’s biggest diamond exchange.

Today’s Den of Thieves 2: Pantera trailer turns the heat to 11 with enough bullets, explosives, and high-stakes heisting to satisfy audiences looking to escape into a world overrun with criminals, pipe dreams, and best-laid plans gone to s**t. I can get behind Gerard Butler and Jackson Jr. joining forces, which is an intriguing enemies-to-friends narrative, especially since both have enough on the line to make them fight tooth and nail to complete the job. My only question is: Can they stop arguing long enough to map a clear path toward victory?

Jordan Bridges, Evin Ahmad, Swen Temmel, Salvatore Esposito, Ciryl Gane, Dino Kelly, Orli Shuka, Rico Verhoeven, and more join Gerard Butler and O’Shea Jackson Jr. for one of the new year’s most testosterone-filled action blowouts, with others waiting in the wings for their chance to shine.

Mel Gibson, Mark Wahlberg, Flight Risk release

Lionsgate announced release dates for a few movies today, including Flight Risk, Mel Gibson’s first time in the director’s chair since Hacksaw Ridge. The action thriller, which stars Mark Wahlberg, will be released on October 18th.

Directed by Mel Gibson and written by Jared Rosenberg, Flight Risk finds Wahlberg playing a pilot transporting an Air Marshall (Michelle Dockery) accompanying a fugitive (Topher Grace) to trial. As they cross the Alaskan wilderness, tensions soar and trust is tested, as not everyone on board is who they seem.”

Our own Chris Bumbray was able to see a trailer for Flight Risk at CinemaCon in Las Vegas last month and he teased that Wahlberg is playing “WAY against type” in the movie. “He even shaved his head to look like he has a bald pate,” Bumbray wrote. “Looks like a really tight kickass thriller, and Gibson REALLY makes Walhberg look crazy in this.” Gibson is always good behind the camera, so I’m sure plenty of you will be pleased to see him back at the helm. It’s been too long.

Lionsgate also announced that The Killer’s Game, an action comedy directed by JJ Perry, would be released on September 13th. The film stars Dave Bautista as Joe Flood, a top hitman who is diagnosed with a terminal illness and decides to take matters into his own hands by taking a hit out on himself. But when the very hitmen he hired also target his ex-girlfriend, he must fend off an army of assassin colleagues and win back the love and his life before it’s too late. The Killer’s Game also stars Sofia Boutella, Terry Crews, Scott Adkins, Pom Klementieff, and Ben Kingsley. Bumbray also caught a look at this film at CinemaCon, saying it “Looks like a hardcore, R-rated action flick and might be Bautista’s John Wick.

The long-awaited Den of Thieves sequel, Den of Thieves: Pantera, will be released on January 10, 2025. Gerard Butler and O’Shea Jackson Jr. return for the sequel, which finds Big Nick (Butler) back on the hunt in Europe and closing in on Donnie (Jackson), who is embroiled in the treacherous and unpredictable world of diamond thieves and the infamous Panther mafia, as they plot a massive heist of the world’s largest diamond exchange.
