Weekend Box Office

Disney’s live action remake of Snow White was never going to open to boffo box office. The toxic early buzz and poor tracking suggested that the Mouse House was fighting an uphill battle with this one, but given how well their live-action remakes did in the past, no one expected the film to open to less than $50 million – including us. That number was seen by some as a worst-case scenario, considering the $270 million price tag.

However, Deadline is now reporting that the movie is opening far worse than anyone expected, with a $43 million weekend, which is even less than the flop remake of Dumbo (which cost half of what Snow White did) made. Unless the box office picks up notably in the next few weeks (similar to what happened with Mufasa: The Lion King), Disney is going to lose a mint on this one, with it the second major misfire of the year, following Captain America: Brave New World. Ironically, that film, which is going to go down as one of Marvel’s lowest grossers, ended up in third place this weekend (higher than expected) with a $4.1 million weekend and a $192.1 million domestic total, which means it should still break $200 million domestically. It’s still the year’s highest grosser, although with it unlikely to pass $500 million internationally, it will likely fail to turn a profit for Disney. However, they have two more kicks at the can this year with Thunderbolts and Fantastic Four: First Steps.

Black bag

Steven Soderbergh’s adult-skewed Black Bag proved to be the recent release with the most staying power, falling 42% for a $4.4 million weekend. Given the $50 million price tag, the $14.88 million total is likely not very good for distributor Focus Features, but at least it’s showing a small bit of resilience in theaters. Last week’s champ, Novocaine, fell much steeper than expected, 57%, to fifth place, with only $3.76 million and a total of $15.76 million. It was narrowly defeated by Mickey 17, Warner Bros’s sci-fi flop, which made $3.8 million for a $40 million total.

That wasn’t WB’s only disappointment this weekend. Their crime drama, The Alto Knights, had a horrible opening, only mustering $3 million in over 2500 theaters. The Robert De Niro-vehicle (he plays two roles) had to overcome bad reviews and little-to-no marketing from a studio that clearly lost faith in it. It was followed at the box office by a movie the studio actually produced but then sold, The Day the Earth Blew Up, and an animated Looney Tunes film, which made $1.83 million for a $6 million-plus total. While those aren’t great numbers, Ketchup is apparently still in business with WB, with them looking to buy their shelved Coyote vs ACME

Neon’s The Monkey continued to show serious muscle at the box office, making $1.55 million for a $37 million domestic total, while Dog Man made $1.5 million, with the $95 million total not too far from the century mark. The faith based film, Last Supper, made $1.33 million for a $5.3 million total.

The sci-fi thriller Ash, starring Eiza González and Aaron Paul, will be getting a theatrical release in March

Other new releases fared even worse than Alto Knights, with IFC/Shudder’s Ash proving to be a disaster, with it making only $716k on over 1100 screens. That’s only $631 a screen – OUCH. The long-shelved Jonathan Majors flick, Magazine Dreams, didn’t do any better, making $700k on 815 screens – making it seem like the actor won’t be making a comeback anytime soon. Another notable flop is A24’s Opus, which plummeted 72% in week 2, with only $282k and a horrible $1.8 million total, making it one of the indie company’s few horror disasters. The Sam Raimi-produced Locked, which stars Bill Skarsgard and Anthony Hopkins did better, with $829k on 971 screens, with it also available digitally.

Next weekend, Jason Statham will return to theaters with A Working Man. Will the Stallone-penned film be a sleeper hit in the vein of The Beekeeper, or will it be an Expend4bles-sized flop? Let us know in the comments!

Ash Review: A sci-fi horror flick in the vein of Event Horizon https://www.joblo.com/ash-sxsw-review/ https://www.joblo.com/ash-sxsw-review/#respond Fri, 21 Mar 2025 15:05:05 +0000 https://www.joblo.com/?p=829973 Ash, from rapper/DJ-turned director Flying Lotus is a gory, but entertaining, sci-fi horror flick.

PLOT: An astronaut (Eiza Gonzalez) wakes up on a distant planet and discovers her entire crew has been killed. Suffering from amnesia, she soon meets a fellow astronaut (Aaron Paul) who says he was part of her team, but she’s unsure whether she can trust him.

REVIEW: Space horror is a reliable sub-genre of the sci-fi universe. Alien is the king of the castle as far as it goes, but the vastness of space is always a good place to set a horror flick, and it’s a genre that I have a particular weakness for. Event Horizon is a favourite of mine, and I even like the not-great ones, like the campy Saturn 3 or The Black Hole. Ash owes a lot to the genre classics, with director Flying Lotus clearly having a deep bench of genre knowledge. However, his influences aren’t limited to film, with many noting Ash has several striking similarities to the video game Dead Space.

It gives Eiza Gonzalez her first major leading role after many years as a supporting player in big movies like Ambulance, The League of Ungentlemanly Warfare, and Baby Driver. She delivers a solid performance as Riya, who has found herself stranded on a new planet, Ash, not knowing how or why she’s there. Even worse is the fact that she has violent visions of dispatching her crewmates, and she begins to wonder if perhaps she was the one who killed them all.

Much of it is a two-hander, with Aaron Paul showing up as the mission’s commander, who was away on another part of the planet when the killings happened and is now trying to evacuate them. Having a suspicion that a parasite might have been responsible for what happened to her crew, Riya isn’t sure they should be leaving, but with their oxygen running out, they don’t have much choice.

Ash review

Both Gonzalez and Paul are solid, even if Flying Lotus’s film, which Jonni Remmler wrote, is rather thin in substance. It’s nothing you haven’t seen before. However, despite a low budget, Flying Lotus has done a nice job of giving the movie a sense of scale, and the violence, when it hits, is hardcore.

For those not in the know, Flying Lotus, who also appears in the movie, is a rapper/DJ but has been toiling away in the genre for some time now, having helmed the well-received “Ozzy’s Dungeon” segment of V/H/S/99, as well as the horror flick, Kuso. The movie looks terrific, with neon-soaked visuals, excellent sound design, and an impeccable score by the director himself.

But, what really makes the movie worth seeing for horror fans is how violent it is, with the gore notched up to eleven during the climax. With Iko Uwais in the cast as one of Riya’s doomed shipmates, there’s even a little bit of fighting, and Lotus has a keen sense for staging action, especially when you consider how limited his resources likely were.

While Ash probably won’t make a huge dent theatrically, I could see it pleasing a whole lot of fans once it makes its Shudder debut (they’re distributing it with RLJE Films). Imagine a somewhat lesser version of Event Horizon or a MUCH better version of Supernova, and that’s about what you get with Ash

Flying Lotus has directed the experimental comedy Kuso and the Ozzy’s Dungeon segment of the horror anthology V/H/S/99, and next up for the rapper and filmmaker (who is a.k.a. Steven Ellison) is the sci-fi thriller Ash, starring Eiza González (Baby Driver) and Aaron Paul (Breaking Bad). RLJE Films will be giving Ash a nationwide theatrical release this Friday, March 21st (you can read our 6/10 review HERE) – and a press release has revealed that a full trailer for the slasher movie Clown in a Cornfield will be attached to Ash! The only way to see the trailer in theatres this weekend will be to attend a screening of Ash.

An adaptation of the Adam Cesare novel (pick up a copy HERE) from Tucker & Dale Vs. Evil and Little Evil director Eli Craig, Clown in a Cornfield centers on Quinn and her father, who have just moved to the quiet town of Kettle Springs hoping for a fresh start. Instead, she discovers a fractured community that has fallen on hard times after the treasured Baypen Corn Syrup Factory burned down. As the locals bicker amongst themselves and tensions boil over, a sinister, grinning figure emerges from the cornfields to cleanse the town of its burdens, one bloody victim at a time. Welcome to Kettle Springs. The real fun starts when Frendo the clown comes out to play. Craig wrote the screenplay with Carter Blanchard.

Katie Douglas (Ginny & Georgia), Carson MacCormac (Shazam!), Aaron Abrams (Hannibal), Will Sasso (The Three Stooges), and Kevin Durand (Abigail) star.

Temple Hill Entertainment’s Marty Bowen, Wyck Godfrey, Isaac Klausner, and John Fischer produced alongside Paris Kassidokostas-Latsis and Terry Dougas of Rhea Films. Executive producers include Blanchard, as well as Jean-Luc De Fanti, Max Work, and Kostas Tsoukalas of Rhea Films, Petersen Harris and George Berman of Temple Hill, Dave Bishop and George Hamilton of Protagonist Pictures, Daniel Bekerman of Scythia Films Inc., and Myron John Tataryn of Thundersnow Pictures. Clown in a Cornfield is a Rhea Films Production as well as a Temple Hill Production and was financed by Hercules Film Fund.

In Ash, González plays a woman who wakes on a far-flung planet to find her crew mysteriously murdered. When a man (Paul) comes to investigate the scene, she must decide if she can trust him or if he’s responsible for her series of unfortunate events. Here’s the official synopsis: On the mysterious planet of Ash, Riya (González) awakens to find her crew slaughtered. When a man named Brion (Paul) arrives to rescue her, an ordeal of psychological and physical terror ensues while Riya and Brion must decide if they can trust one another to survive.

Beulah Koale (Hawaii Five-O), Kate Elliott (The Gulf), and Iko Uwais of the Raid films are also in the cast. At one time, Tessa Thompson and Joseph Gordon-Levitt were signed on to star in the film, but they both had to drop out and were replaced by González and Paul.

Flying Lotus – who some may know as the FlyLo FM DJ featured in the video game Grand Theft Auto Online – directed the film from a screenplay by Jonni Remmler and is also composed the score. XYZ Films and GFC Films are producing Ash, with Neill Blomkamp and Echo Lake serving as executive producers. XYZ Films is co-financing the project with IPR.VC. Blomkamp is known for his own directing endeavors, including the films District 9, Elysium, Chappie, and Demonic. Individual producers are Nate Bolotin of XYZ Films and Matthew Metcalfe of GFC Films.

RLJE Films will be giving Clown in a Cornfield a theatrical release in the United States on May 9th. You can read our 7/10 review HERE.

RLJE Films dropped the first teaser trailer for Ash at New York Comic-Con, a trippy sci-fi horror movie starring Eiza González (3 Body Problem) and Aaron Paul (Breaking Bad) from director Flying Lotus and screenwriter Jonni Remmler.

The official synopsis for Ash: “On the mysterious planet of Ash, Riya (González) awakens to find her crew slaughtered. When a man named Brion (Paul) arrives to rescue her, an ordeal of psychological and physical terror ensues while Riya and Brion must decide if they can trust one another to survive.” The film also stars Iko Uwais (The Raid), Beulah Koale (Next Goal Wins), and Kate Elliott (Wentworth). In addition to directing Ash, Flying Lotus also composed the score.

González has previously teased that you should expect the unexpected with Flying Lotus. “The way his brain works is quite special,” González says of Ash’s director. “He reminds me a lot of David Fincher, who also started in music videos, as someone who is quite interested in pushing boundaries and not being scared of diving into something. But this movie also required someone who had a really authentic and unique artistic take. We couldn’t have been more lucky, because his visual imagery and the way that he spoke to us about the movie really translated to the making of the film. It’s a movie that causes the audience to stay engaged consistently. I love movies that require you to keep thinking and trying to figure out what is actually happening.

Paul added that music was very important to the production. “He was always playing music on set,” Paul said. “Not necessarily his own music, but just stuff that he dug that fit the vibe of where the characters were at. And then, just before rolling, he would start messing with some stuff that he’d been working on and playing it over the speakers, to get us in the mood. Then they’d yell ‘action!’ and we’d cut the music and go into it.

Ash will be released in theaters in 2025, followed by a streaming debut on Shudder. What did you think of the teaser trailer for Ash?

The film is currently in post-production, so we don’t know when Prime Video will be releasing it.

2024 is proving to be an amazing year for the fast-rising Eiza Gonzalez. Widely considered one of the most beautiful actresses in Hollywood, her role in Michael Bay’s Ambulance probably should have propelled her to A-list status, but the film went largely unseen (despite being one of Bay’s best). Yet, she has several big roles on tap this year that may well help her cross over. There’s Guy Ritchie’s The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare on the big screen, co-starring Henry Cavill and Alan Ritchson. But her biggest project is certainly The Three-Body Problem, an adaptation of the Chinese sci-fi saga by Liu Cixin. The series is set to debut on March 21st, and marks the first post-Game of Thrones series for David Benioff & D.B. Weiss.

Aaron Paul (Breaking BadWestworld) and Eiza González (Baby DriverI Care a Lot) are teaming up with Flying Lotus (a.k.a Steven Ellison) for a mysterious science-fiction film called Ash. Plot details remain in shadows, though some tidbits have managed to emerge from the gloom. According to Entertainment Weekly, González plays a woman who awakes to find the rest of her space station crew dead from questionable circumstances. When a man (Aaron Paul) arrives to escort her to safety, she wonders if she can trust this new and perplexing stranger. Meanwhile, Paul’s character wonders the same about the lone survivor of an interstellar massacre.

In addition to revealing to basics of the plot, EW debuted a gallery of first-look images (below) from Ash, Flying Lotus’ second feature film. “The way his brain works is quite special,” González says about Flying Lotus. “He reminds me a lot of David Fincher, who also started in music videos, as someone who is quite interested in pushing boundaries and not being scared of diving into something. But this movie also required someone who had a really authentic and unique artistic take. Flying Lotus directs from an original screenplay by Jonni Remmler. Iko Uwais (The RaidThe Expend4bles), Beulah Koale (Hawaii Five-0Next Goal Wins), and Kate Elliott (WentworthBliss) also join the core cast.

In addition to directing music videos and composing music for film and video game projects, Flying Lotus is the FlyLo FM DJ featured in the groundbreaking online video game Grand Theft Auto Online. According to Paul, Flying Lotus uses music as fuel for his creative endeavors.

“He was always playing music on set,” Paul told EW during a Zoom interview. “Not necessarily his own music, but just stuff that he dug that fit the vibe of where the characters were at. And then, just before rolling, he would start messing with some stuff that he’d been working on and playing it over the speakers, to get us in the mood. Then they’d yell ‘action!’ and we’d cut the music and go into it.”

“Music gives you an ambiance. It definitely sets you up,” Gonzalez adds. “So having this specific movie and his specific music being made at the same time was so incredibly helpful. Even little details he gave us, like, ‘I want such-and-such instrument predominantly throughout the movie,’ gave us a completely different vibe, especially for me and Aaron. We have a lot of scenes together, and our dynamic is super intense and crucial in the film, so it really made a gigantic difference.”

Plenty of excellent sci-fi movies begin with a lone survivor and a foundation of mistrust. Can we expect Ash to join the ranks of films like AlienUnderwater, and The Thing? Let us know what you think about the setup for Ash in the comments section below.

Nine months ago, it was announced that Tessa Thompson and Joseph Gordon-Levitt had signed on to star in Ash, a sci-fi thriller from rapper and filmmaker Flying Lotus, a.k.a. Steven Ellison. Then, two months ago, we learned that Thompson and Gordon-Levitt both had to drop out of the project and were replaced by Eiza González (Baby Driver) and Aaron Paul (Breaking Bad). Filming on Ash is now underway, with González and Paul in the lead roles – and Deadline has revealed that they’re being joined in the cast by Beulah Koale (Hawaii Five-O), Kate Elliott (The Gulf), and Iko Uwais of the Raid films.

González will be playing a woman who wakes on a far-flung planet to find her crew mysteriously murdered. When a man (Paul) comes to investigate the scene, she must decide if she can trust him or if he’s responsible for her series of unfortunate events.

Flying Lotus is directing the film from a screenplay by Jonni Remmler and will also be composing the score.

Flying Lotus provided the following statement when González and Paul were cast: “We are building something fresh and unique with Ash and having Eiza and Aaron in this world just makes it flames. They are absolute magic makers, brave and equally inspiring. All that to say… We ‘bout to kill this shit.

Now that Ash is filming in New Zealand, we can assume that Flying Lotus and his cast and crew are in the process of killing this shit.

Flying Lotus previously directed the experimental comedy Kuso and the Ozzy’s Dungeon segment of the horror anthology V/H/S/99.

Does Ash sound interesting to you, and what do you think of Eiza González and Aaron Paul taking over roles that were once set to go to Tessa Thompson and Joseph Gordon-Levitt? Share your thoughts on this one by leaving a comment below.

Eiza González, Aaron Paul, Tessa Thompson, and Joseph Gordon-Levitt are all fine choices to lead a film, and I’m interested in checking out Ash no matter who it stars. This “far-flung planet” murder mystery sounds very intriguing to me.

Trusting people is difficult enough without having to take the word of a perfect stranger in the vastness of space. In Ash, Tessa Thompson (Thor: Love and ThunderAnnihilation) and Joseph Gordon-Levitt (Project PowerLooper) will place their lives in each other’s hands as they investigate the mass murder of a space station crew.

Ash is an upcoming science-fiction thriller from rapper and filmmaker Flying Lotus, aka Steven Ellison. Lotus directs from a script written by German-Brazilian writer Jonni Remmler. The story revolves around a woman (Thomson) who wakes on a far-flung planet to find her crew mysteriously murdered. When a man (Gordon-Levitt) comes to investigate the scene, Thompson must decide if she can trust him or if he’s responsible for her series of unfortunate events.

XYZ Films and GFC Films produce Ash, with Echo Lake and District 9 director Neill Blomkamp executive producing. XYZ Films is bringing Ash to potential buyers at the Toronto International Film Festival next month, where the feature is sure to fetch a fair price.

Beyond presenting an extensive music catalog, Flying Lotus directed 2017’s Kuso, a feature focusing on the aftermath of a Los Angeles earthquake. Co-written by Flying Lotus and David Firth, Kuso stars Hannibal Buress, George Clinton, Firth, Arden Banks, Byron Bowers, and Shane Carpenter. Ash is a big ticket item for Flying Lotus, especially with stars like Thompson and Gordon-Levitt attached. The film should fetch significant money at TIFF, where studios and streaming platforms will be anxious to secure the film for their respective platform.

What do you think about the concept for Ash? Do you think Thompson’s character is somehow responsible for the deaths of her crew, or is Gordon-Levitt’s character doubling back to finish the job he started? Let us know what you think did the deed in the comments.
