Paul W.S. Anderson might not feel like the most obvious choice to adapt a George R.R. Martin story, but he says he has taken direct inspiration from the author’s source story in achieving the vision for In the Lost Lands. And yes, it involves a lot of blue screen.

Anderson recently chatted with Variety to discuss how he sought to achieve a vision that doesn’t only respect Martin but creates an environment that doesn’t rely on the author’s most famous work, the Game of Thrones series. “It entirely came out of George’s story, really. Reading it, the Lost Lands were sentient. It was like walking into the Overlook Hotel and going, ‘Oh, my God, it’s alive.’ It was a whole haunted landscape. That’s why I thought it was the correct approach. Although it’s set in the future, society has really fallen back into a feudal state, which suggested to me period paintings. I wanted the movie to have a painterly look to it. It should look like the graphic novel that Hieronymus Bosch never wrote. I was also very aware that George has had a huge amount of success with ‘Game of Thrones’ and Westeros. I don’t want us to look like a Westeros Redux. I wanted a completely different look. I needed to just create it from scratch.”

Anderson also pointed out that by shooting in front of blue screens as opposed to fully immersive LED rooms, the budget was able to be brought down, having reduced the number of visual effects that had to be done within a certain timeline. “It’s certainly more cost-effective than shooting against a virtual wall. The problem with those is you’re stuck with what you shoot. If you don’t like it, then you have to turn it into a visual effect. Now you’re paying twice. You’re paying for the very expensive wall — because the studio rental is huge and you’re hoping that’s going to be justified by getting the image in-camera. But if the seam up between the wall and the floor isn’t correct, or if one of those LED cubes goes out and black cubes are floating in the background, or if the wall is too sharp and you can’t defocus it enough, then it becomes a visual effect anyway. You’re paying for the wall and the visual effect.”

Unfortunately for Anderson and the studio, all of these efforts haven’t paid off (read our 3/10 review here) and In the Lost Lands will never make back its budget (it has taken in just $1.4 million worldwide as of publication). But no doubt he will hope to rebound with his return to horror, an adaptation of video game series The House of the Dead, something previously tackled by Uwe Boll…

Science Fiction and Fantasy is a hard nut to crack when it comes to creating original stories. It’s why we often see adaptations coming from that space, as it’s seen as a far riskier genre. A higher budget is often needed to pull off the building of a whole new world, and when a production doesn’t have that, it can be a tough hill to climb. Paul WS Anderson skipped out on major studios and instead made his epic with the likes of Constantin Films and Vertical. While I don’t think it was a winning combination (check out my review HERE), I’ll never turn down a new fictional world.

I sat down with stars Dave Bautista, Milla Jovovich and director Paul WS Anderson to discuss their new film, In The Lost Lands. I’ve always appreciated Dave for his ability to just step aside and let a stuntman do the job, versus trying to be a tough guy so we talk about that a little bit. Having been a stuntman for 20 years (professional wrestling) Dave knows when to just let the professionals handle it. And with this being Milla and Paul’s Seventh collaboration, I asked them what works so well with their pairing and why they continue to take projects together. These were some fun talks and these are clearly some good people who tried their best to make a new sci-fi fantasy world.

IN THE LOST LANDS plot: A queen sends the powerful and feared sorceress Gray Alys to the ghostly wilderness of the Lost Lands in search of a magical power, where the sorceress and her guide, the drifter Boyce, must outwit and outfight man and demon.

PLOT: A sorceress travels to the Lost Lands in search of a magical power that allows a person to transform into a werewolf.

REVIEW: Collaborations between Milla Jovovich and her husband Paul WS Anderson are the norm at this point. While we watched them create Resident Evil movies together for years, they’re now turning to the world of George RR Martin for their seventh collaboration. And with all that Game of Thrones hype behind him, you’d expect Martin to provide a new and interesting fantasy world for the two to play in. It’s funny what they say about assumptions, eh?

Jovovich stars as Gray Alys, a witch who is on a mission to find a werewolf who is murdering people. As much as the trailer makes it seems like something grander, that’s really all it is. She hires Boyce (Dave Bautista) to help her navigate the Lost Lands. Her power is feared, so she’s being hunted down by a group of bad guys, headed up by Ash. They’re hot on the trail of Gray and Boyce, with the intention of killing them before they reach their destination. The world is a pretty simple post-apocalyptic backdrop with a scale that really doesn’t make a lot of sense when you break it down. Almost feels like someone saw Dune and wanted to copy it.

Milla Jovovich in In The Lost Lands (2025).

Dave Bautista is his usual self and brings the film the only bit of life it can muster. Even then, the script does him no favors and no one really comes out of it unscathed. Boyce makes plenty of stupid decisions and comes across as a bit of a dummy. Then there’s Milla Jovovich who seems half interested most of the movie, completely clashing with the supposed stakes at hand. Given that her character of Gray Alys is intended to be the person that carries over from film to film, I can’t imagine why she’s so bland.

When it comes to a sci-fi/fantasy movie like this: I look for two things: the action and the worldbuilding. Seeing as how the world is just a green-screened Mad Max dystopia, no points in that category. But what about the action? I’d say this is where In The Lost Lands disappoints the most. I could not tell you a single action set piece outside of a train falling into a gorge, Back to the Future 3-style. Most of the hand-to-hand combat feels like something you’d see in 300. Which is fine for that film, but it’s been nearly 20 years and to say it’s a dated style would be a massive understatement.

It doesn’t help that In The Lost Lands is so dreadfully boring. Most of the film is just watching Boyce and Gray on their journey, but they don’t have an interesting dynamic with each other. And there are long stretches where it feels like we’re no closer to our end goal, and the script is simply throw obstacles in order to stretch the run time. This is made all the more frustrating when they then have to exposition dump at such a rapid pace it’ll make your head spin. So much information is dropped in a very small time frame, bringing up the obvious question of why couldn’t these things be revealed using nuance and inference versus simply having a character tell us everything verbatim. They’re trying to spoonfeed us like we’re babies and it does not work.

Milla Jovovich and Dave Bautista in In The Lost Lands (2025).

The aesthetic of In The Lost Lands feels like larger-than-life Mad Max, with its sprawling cities in total disarray and desert appearance. I was often reminded of Zack Snyder’s Rebel Moon, with its stale CGI backdrops. For those unaware, comparisons to that film are never a good thing. There are some shots that look fine and others look like a bad videogame. As much as it’s trying to create a whole new world, this feels like one we’ve seen time and time again. And it doesn’t help that the greenscreen work looks like it belongs in a movie produced by Asylum, not a major studio.

I’m not sure what about this story intrigued George RR Martin enough to focus on this versus finishing up Winds of Winter, but it’s genuinely baffling. There’s not a hint of originality within the world and it feels like pieces of so many other (and better) science fiction and fantasy worlds. There’s a twist that occurs that feels so obvious, that it’s truly an insult to anyone with any modicum of intelligence. The fact that we missed out on Winds of Winter for this makes me dislike this movie even more.

I haven’t enjoyed a Paul WS Anderson movie in some time, so my expectations were already rock bottom yet even still it managed to disappoint. Not only is it one of the worst of the year, it sits firmly near the bottom of Anderson’s filmography. If anything, I just feel bad for Dave Bautista, who puts his all into his work, even when those around him seem to be going through the motions. Because as evidenced by Event Horizon nearly 30 years ago, the Anderson can make great cinema. It’s just been a long time since he reminded anyone of that.

Back in 2015, we heard that Milla Jovovich (Resident Evil) was in talks to star in the George R.R. Martin adaptation In the Lost Lands, which at the time was set to be written and directed by Constantin Werner (The Pagan Queen). That version of In the Lost Lands never made it off the ground – but seven years later, the project was revived, with Jovovich still in the lead and her husband Paul W.S. Anderson (Event Horizon) taking over as director. Two years after we heard that In the Lost Lands was back on, it was announced that Vertical had picked up the distribution rights to the finished film. Vertical is planning to give In the Lost Lands a theatrical release on March 7th – and while doing press for this film, which has a werewolf element to it, cast member Dave Bautista (Guardians of the Galaxy) has revealed that he wants to make a vampire movie!

To get more specific, Bautista wants to play a vampire. He told GamesRadar+, “Still at the very top of my list is I want to play a vampire. More than anything, I want to play a vampire, but I’m looking for that perfect role.” When Jovovich heard about Bautista’s bloodsucker dreams, she said, “Dave wants to play a vampire? I stand behind it. I will go watch that movie, Dave.

While we wait to see when Bautista is going to have his chance to make a vampire movie, we have In the Lost Lands to look forward to. Scripted by Anderson and Werner, the film centers on a queen who, desperate to fulfill her love, makes a daring play: she hires the sorceress Gray Alys (Jovovich), a woman as feared as she is powerful. Sent to the ghostly wilderness of the Lost Lands, Alys and her guide, the drifter Boyce (Bautista), must outwit and outfight man and demon in this fable that explores the nature of good and evil, debt and fulfillment, love and loss. Oddly, the marketing department chose to leave any reference to werewolves out of the synopsis.

This adaptation of In the Lost Lands was produced by Anderson, Jovovich, Bautista, and Werner, along with Jeremy Bolt, Robert Kulzer, and Jonathan Meisner.

Will you be watching In the Lost Lands this weekend, and would you like to see Dave Bautista sucking blood in a vampire movie? Let us know by leaving a comment below.

Speaking with SFX magazine, Anderson said In the Lost Lands is “an adult fairy tale with bone-crunching violence and horrific surprises. Looks-wise, it’s very different to anything I’ve done before. I really wanted to embrace the mythic fairy tale quality of it, so it’s an R-rated fairy tale, that’s for sure. The concept was just fabulous. It has everything audiences like from George’s work. There are the dark, interesting characters, and the surprising narrative reverses. This was a chance to broaden out that Martin universe and give [audiences] a taste of something that was both a little familiar but also a little fresh.

Deadline reports that Vertical has snagged the rights to In the Lost Lands, a fantasy flick from Constantin Film directed by Paul W.S. Anderson and starring Milla Jovovich and Dave Bautista.

The film is based on a short story by George R.R. Martin and centers on a “Queen who, desperate to fulfill her love, makes a daring play: she sends the powerful and feared sorceress Gray Alys (Jovovich) to the ghostly wilderness of the Lost Lands in search of a magical power, where the sorceress and her guide, the drifter Boyce (Bautista), must outwit and outfight man and demon…” Constantin Werner wrote the script from a story written by Anderson, who also produces alongside Jovovich, Bautista, Werner, Jonathan Meisner, Jeremy Bolt, and Robert Kulzer.

With In the Lost Lands, we’ve created a movie with a completely unique visual style and storytelling that uses cutting-edge technology to bring the story to life like never before,” Anderson said in a statement. “So, it was always important to me that it be seen on the big screen. That’s why I couldn’t be more thrilled that Vertical is bringing In the Lost Lands to American theaters.

Vertical Partner Peter Jarowey added, “We’re thrilled to be in business with Constantin Film for the In The Lost Lands U.S. release next year. The film is a testament to how Paul and Milla’s continued partnership yields compelling cinematic experiences. Dave’s charm and humor is larger-than-life, and the cast’s chemistry radiates off the screen.

Jovovich has a few other projects on her slate, including Midnight, an action movie starring Alexandra Shipp as a young, blind woman who is hunted by a collective of international criminals led by Jovovich’s character. Rosario Dawson also stars and produces the project. Jovovich is also starring alongside Luke Evans in World Breaker, a new sci-fi movie from director Brad Anderson. “Five years ago, a tear in the fabric of reality brought creatures to our world from an alternate dimension bent on our destruction,” reads the description. “A father hides his daughter on an island to keep her safe while he prepares her for survival and the battles to come. But when the world is about to break, no place is safe.

In the Lost Lands will be released exclusively in theaters early next year.

Back in 2015, we heard that Milla Jovovich (Resident Evil) was in talks to star in the George R.R. Martin adaptation In the Lost Lands, which at the time was set to be written and directed by Constantin Werner (The Pagan Queen). That version of In the Lost Lands never made it off the ground – but seven years later, Jovovich is on board to star in a take on the material that has been written and will be directed by her husband Paul W.S. Anderson (Event Horizon). Jovovich has been joined in the cast by Dave Bautista (Guardians of the Galaxy), and during an interview with Variety Anderson revealed that Jovovich and Bautista’s characters will be fighting each other in the movie.

When asked about In the Lost Lands, Anderson said:

I’m actively involved in prepping the movie right now. It’s Milla [Jovovich] and Dave Bautista, who are going be amazing. Seeing them go head-to-head is just going to be fabulous.”

When asked to confirm that the actors are going to be fighting each other, he replied,

Oh yeah, I mean you can’t have Milla and Dave in a movie and not have them have a go at it. It’s an adaptation of a George R.R. Martin story so you know it’s going to be dark and twisted and have wonderful characters. Because that’s what George does.”

The story centers of In the Lost Lands centers on

a queen who, desperate to fulfill her love, makes a daring play: she hires the sorceress Gray Alys (Jovovich), a woman as feared as she is powerful. Sent to the ghostly wilderness of the Lost Lands, Alys and her guide, the drifter Boyce (Bautista), must outwit and outfight man and demon in this fable that explores the nature of good and evil, debt and fulfillment, love and loss.

This adaptation of In the Lost Lands is being produced by Anderson, Jovovich, and Bautista, along with Jeremy Bolt, Jonathan Meisner, and the formerly attached writer/director, Constantin Werner. According to Anderson, filming is scheduled to begin on November 14th.

Are you looking forward to a George R.R. Martin adaptation from Paul W.S. Anderson, which will feature Milla Jovovich and Dave Bautista fighting each other? Share your thoughts on In the Lost Lands by leaving a comment below.

The deadly duo of Paul W.S. Anderson and Milla Jovovich are continuing their streak of collaborations on the "sprawling epic" In the Lost Lands, which is based on a novel by Game of Thrones author George R.R. Martin. Anderson has written the screenplay and will be directing the film, with Dave Bautista joining Jovovich in the cast.

The story centers on

a queen who, desperate to fulfill her love, makes a daring play: she hires the sorceress Gray Alys (Jovovich), a woman as feared as she is powerful. In the Lost Lands is being produced by Anderson, Jovovich, and Bautista, along with Jeremy Bolt, Jonathan Meisner, and Constantin Werner.

I'm not familiar with the source material and I'm not a fan of the average Anderson/Jovovich collaboration, so I'll have to take a "wait and see" approach on this one.

Who's up for some more high fantasy shenanigans with Monster Hunter director Paul W.S. Anderson? You are? Well, then I have some news for you! It would seem as if Anderson, Milla Jovovich (The Fifth Element, Dazed and Confused), and Dave Bautista (Army of the Dead, Guardians of the Galaxy) are teaming on a fantasy-adventure movie titled In the Lost Lands, which is based on the short story by Game Of Thrones creator George R.R. Martin.

The story follows a queen, desperate to obtain the gift of shapeshifting, who makes a daring play: she hires the sorceress Gray Alys (Jovovich), a woman as feared as she is powerful. Sent to the ghostly wilderness of the 'Lost Lands’, Alys and her guide, the drifter Boyce (Bautista), must outwit and outfight man and demon in a fable that explores the nature of good and evil, debt and fulfillment, love and loss.

Anderson has already written the script, with plans for Jeremy Bolt (Resident Evil), Anderson, Jovovich, Bautista, and Jonathan Meisner to produce through Dream Bros Entertainment, and Constantin Werner. This is not the first time that a film project based on Martin's short story has been in the works. Previously, a version of the project launched in Berlin but failed to move forward. With a new creative team and financial elements already secured, it's all but guaranteed that Anderson's version will reach theaters.

As much as I am skeptical about Anderson adapting the material, I will jump at any chance to see Jovovich portray an all-powerful spellcaster. Plus, Bautista being thrown to the mercy of enchanted lands and demonic beasts sounds like a whole hell of a lot of fun. I say we keep our fingers crossed and see how this intriguing idea shakes out.

It's being reported RESIDENT EVIL star Milla Jovovich is in final talks to star in IN THE LOST LANDS, a new fantasy-adventure movie based on short stories written by Game of Thrones author George R.R. Martin. Constantin Werner (THE PAGAN QUEEN) will direct the film from the screenplay he wrote, and production will begin in Germany later this year. Shameless and THE CHUMSCRUBBER actor Justin Chatwin is also attached to the Myriad Pictures project.

According to Myriad (via THR), IN THE LOST LANDS "interconnects three female-centric Martin short stories":

In one thread, the desperate queen of a city built into a towering mountain hires the sorceress Gray Alys (Jovovich) to travel into the ghostly wasteland called the Lost Lands, to obtain the gift of shape-shifting into a werewolf, but she doesn’t realize that the fulfillment of her wish will come at a terrible price.

Meanwhile, warrior girl Sharra must fight a dragon that serves as the gatekeeper of seven worlds to reunite with her lost lover Kaydar. During this quest she meets the mysterious lord of a deserted castle, Laren Dorr, who seduces her so completely that she forgets her quest and stays with him, unaware that he is the real gatekeeper.

And in the futuristic tale Bitterblooms, a young barbarian girl gets spellbound by a lonely witch in a spacecraft, who shows her beauty and love, which turns out to be a net of lies and deceit.

Based on the synopsis above, there's going to be an awful lot going on in IN THE LOST LANDS. I haven't seen Constantin Werner's THE PAGAN QUEEN, so I don't know what to expect from the director, but I am certainly interested in learning more about his new movie.

Season 5 of Game of Thrones will premiere on HBO on April 12, 2015.

Milla Jovovich has kicked a lot of ass in the RESIDENT EVIL series of films and I've become quite a fan of the sexy star over the years, so I'm always curious as to what she's working on next. THR is reporting that Jovovich is in final negotiations to lead a new fantasy-adventure project from the creator of "Game of Thrones", and while it's not strictly horror, the description certainly sounds as if it will have plenty of genre elements for fans.

Jovovich is in talks to star in IN THE LOST LANDS, based on short stories by author George R.R. Martin. THR is also sharing that "Shameless" actor Justin Chatwin is also on board the feature, which is to be directed by German director Constantin Werner (THE PAGAN QUEEN), who also wrote the screenplay adaptation. The film will be a Germany-Canada co-production and is planning to begin shooting in Germany in the last quarter of 2015.

IN THE LOST LANDS interconnects three female-centric Martin short stories, according to Myriad:

In one thread, the desperate queen of a city built into a towering mountain hires the sorceress Gray Alys (Jovovich) to travel into the ghostly wasteland called the Lost Lands, to obtain the gift of shape-shifting into a werewolf, but she doesn’t realize that the fulfillment of her wish will come at a terrible price.

And in the futuristic tale Bitterblooms, a young barbarian girl gets spellbound by a lonely witch in a spacecraft, who shows her beauty and love, which turns out to be a net of lies and deceit.

Werewolves, witches, and dragons? Sounds like it could be an interesting project with some cool horror elements so we'll keep an eye on this one.

Steve Hoban (SPLICE, GINGER SNAPS), Oliver Luer (VALKYRIE) and Nico Bruinsma (Cult Epics) are producing. Myriad’s Kirk D’Amico will serve as an executive producer on the film.
