Sinners, Ryan Coogler’s remarkable horror film, has been given an official 4K Blu-ray street date, with the film set to hit shelves on July 22nd. As a nice bonus, it will be featured in a sharp steelbook packaging.

Considering Sinners is one of the best-reviewed films of 2025 so far (we gave it a 9/10 and even Tom Cruise loved it!), this is going to be an immediate pre-order for a lot of us, myself included. As for technical specs, you can expect a stellar presentation that offers native 4K 2160p resolution and Dolby Vision, HDR10 on the visual front, and Dolby Atmos and Dolby TrueHD 7.1 on the audio side.

One additional compelling element to this 4K Blu-ray release of Sinners is that it will have the shifting aspect ratio – which went from 2.76:1 to 1.43:1 in some scenes during the IMAX release – something cinematographer Autumn Durald Arkapaw teased on social media a few weeks ago, thus presenting the film in a way that will duplicate the theatrical experience as best as possible for your home.

Sinners cleaned up at the box office upon release, landing at #1 on Easter weekend with $55.8 million. In its second week, it barely fell, holding the #1 spot and taking in another $45.7 million. It has also yet to fall past the second spot and has now earned just under $300 million at the worldwide box office, which, just as a reminder, is astounding for a movie not based on an IP. That will easily put it in the top 10 for the year; as of now, it trails only A Minecraft Movie, although that movie had people screaming at the screen for very different reasons.

Here is the plot of Sinners if you’ve yet to see it: “Here is the plot for Sinners: “Trying to leave their troubled lives behind, twin brothers (Michael B. Jordan) return to their hometown to start again, only to discover that an even greater evil is waiting to welcome them back.”

Will you be pre-ordering the 4K Blu-ray of Sinners?

Some cliche somewhere said that ‘a picture is worth a thousand words.’ This has proven to be the case for me and especially when it comes to fan art. I have always sought out great fan art and have wanted to share it with as many people as possible. “Awesome Art” is the outlet for that passion. In this column, I will showcase the kick-ass artwork of some great artists, with the hopes that these artists get the attention they deserve. That’s the aim. Unpopular Opinion: Sinners Is Good, But Is It A Masterpiece? Sinners, the horror film from Ryan Coogler and Michael B. Jordan, has unveiled another poster ahead of its April release

It’s 2025, and everyone has to like everything the same amount, and the dissenting opinion is always wrong. A Minecraft Movie is nothing but memes and stupid references. Comic Book Movies are OVER and every new one sucks. And every good horror movie is the “best horror movie of the last decade.” (NOTE: these aren’t my opinions, and this is simply an attempt at humor/proving a point) It’s never been more difficult to simply not vibe with something because it doesn’t match your own sensibilities. I’m here to be the dissenting opinion for a certain vampire movie taking the world by storm: Ryan Coogler‘s Sinners. [Check out Chris Bumbray’s glowing review HERE]

*Spoilers for Sinners below!*

While I would still fall on the side of FRESH if this were a Rotten Tomatoes score, I can’t help but see the movie’s flaws. If I were to review Sinners, I’d give it a 7/10, and I’d likely forget about it within a couple of weeks. To me, it’s not the masterpiece that it’s being made out to be and it’s very simple as to why: Sinners did stuff that I didn’t like. Whether it’s vampires simply leaving a situation for plot convenience, an overabundance of offscreen deaths, or some of the most random dance sequences in a non-musical film, it simply wasn’t for this horror fan.

Don’t get me wrong, the music in Sinners is very good. But there were times where what’s happening on screen doesn’t match the tone of the music in any way. In fact, there’s one sequence where there are competing beats, meant to represent a blend of music over the years, yet it just becomes this mishmash of sounds. It’s not pleasing to the ear, notes blend into one another with clashing BPMs, and its intention feels completely lost. And my natural reaction is to simply roll my eyes when characters start singing and dancing. It’s a difficult element to overcome.

Sinners

As much as I would love to join the praise, this is where the “be true to yourself” part of the job comes into play. I love vampire movies, and the vampire element is easily the weakest aspect of Sinners. This would have been an infinitely more interesting story without the vampires, and it was just the two black brothers trying to start a business in the Deep South. They don’t even take advantage of the monsters, with most of the vampire carnage being done off-screen. Hell, their presence is not even felt until over an hour into the story. Nearly every single death is done off-camera, and they just sort of happen, without any real impact. As much as the trailers make this seem like some big standoff between the vampires and the inhabitants of the club, that’s a very minor part of the story. Hell, the big showdown at the end occurs between Smoke and bunch of white supremacists; no vampires in sight. Furthering the notion that the vampires are simply an afterthought.

While Sinners is filled with awesome performances, the writing for these characters feels very tired and uninspired. One of the twins is in love with a white girl, the other having lost his child, and both running from their criminal past; it felt like the film was simply trying to check off every stereotypical box it possibly could.

But the biggest issue with Sinners comes with its failed Vampire logic.

Sinners

One thing I’ll always hate in a vampire story is presenting these monsters as an unstoppable force that spreads very easily, yet these are somehow secretive creatures. I’m sorry, but based on this movie, we just saw a whole group get changed overnight, with very little pushback. If that’s the case, the entire world should be overrun with vampires. Don’t give your Vampires, zombie-like transference of powers if you don’t examine all that it implies. You have to give your bad guys limitations, otherwise the question constantly becomes “Why have these guys not simply taken over?” Instead, the vampires prove to be completely inept, not even realizing that the sun was on the verge of rising (something that you get warned of for quite a while due to this thing called Dawn).

Whenever a movie comes along with a lot of hype, it’s understandable to be a bit cautious. And it’s also understandable to see it and not fall in line simply because everyone else loves it. It’s important to be strong in your convictions. I wanted an awesome vampire movie, and I instead got a story that used the mythical creatures as an allegory for racism at the time, while still featuring a non-fantastical group of villains present, bringing the question as to why we even got vampires in the first place. I liked plenty of Sinners, but the stuff I didn’t is too prominent to ignore.

This is an unpopular opinion after all so get in those comments, tell me how wrong I am, how I missed the point, and how I don’t know horror movies. Or tell me why Sinners worked FOR YOU! I’d love to hear from you.

Sinners, a genre picture and a period piece from frequent collaborators Ryan Coogler and Michael B. Jordan – who have worked on Fruitvale Station, Creed, Black Panther, and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever together as director and cast member, and have other collaborations that Coogler didn’t direct – reached theatres on April 18th. Released by Warner Bros. and sporting a budget of around $90 million, the film has racked up over $181 million at the worldwide box office so far… and has proven to be so popular, Warner Bros. has already announced a re-release! A press release informs us that Sinners will be re-released in nine select IMAX 70mm theatres across North America, with screenings taking place from Thursday, May 15 to Wednesday, May 21.

Jeff Goldstein, President of Global Distribution, Warner Bros. Pictures, provided the following statement: “Audiences have spoken and we listened. If ever a film needed to be experienced in this incredible larger-than-life format, it’s Sinners. Ryan has delivered a film that has been embraced by fans who appreciate the craftsmanship that goes into creating a film for this screen-filling format and we wanted to give everyone the opportunity to see it—or see it again—in 70mm IMAX.” The press release goes on to say, “Sinners will be back in IMAX 70mm at the City Walk Stadium 19 + IMAX (Los Angeles), Irvine Spectrum and IMAX (Irvine), Lincoln Square 13 + IMAX (New York), Metreon 16 + IMAX (San Francisco), Indiana State Museum (Indianapolis), Arizona Mills IMAX (Phoenix), Autonation IMAX (Ft. Lauderdale), Webb Chapel IMAX (Dallas) and Colossus IMAX (Toronto).”

Directed by Coogler with Jordan playing dual roles, Sinners has the following official synopsis: Trying to leave their troubled lives behind, twin brothers (Jordan) return to their hometown to start again, only to discover that an even greater evil is waiting to welcome them back. “You keep dancing with the devil, one day he’s gonna follow you home.” Jordan is joined in the cast by Hailee Steinfeld (True Grit), Wunmi Mosaku (Loki), singer Miles Caton, Delroy Lindo (Get Shorty), Jack O’Connell (Unbroken), Omar Benson Miller (CSI: Miami), Li Jun Li (The Exorcist TV series), Yao (The Last Bout), Jayme Lawson (The Batman), Lola Kirke (Mozart in the Jungle), and musician / cinematographer Peter Dreimanis.

Coogler (who is also developing a reboot of the TV series The X-Files) produced the film with Proximity Media partners Zinzi Coogler and Sev Ohanian. Rebecca Cho served as executive producer alongside Will Greenfield and two-time Oscar-winning composer Ludwig Goransson (who won his first Oscar for his work on Coogler’s Black Panther and his second for Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer). The Motion Picture Association ratings board gave the film an R rating for strong bloody violence, sexual content and language.

Tom Cruise feels the need – the need to bleed! Cruise recently caught a screening of Ryan Coogler’s insanely stellar Sinners, prompting him to take to social media and praise the film, its director and the moviegoing experience.

Posting on Instagram, Tom Cruise wrote of Sinners, “Congratulations Ryan, Michael, and to the entire cast and crew. Must see in a cinema and stay through the end credits!” This pushed star Michael B. Jordan to respond, “Thanks for the love and support!!!”

Tom Cruise isn’t only one of the biggest stars on the planet but he has been an active proponent for seeing movies on the big screen – especially in the streaming age – like no other. Earlier this month, Cruise said the experience of catching a film at the cinema is unmatched. “Seeing a movie on the big screens can change lives…The cultural impact of movie theaters can’t be matched…The story of cinema is an iconic one but it’s only just begun.”

To date, Sinners has taken in around $130 million domestically and a total worldwide haul of about $170 million. Those are fantastic numbers to see, showing the audiences are still ready to see unique, original stories in the theater. It’s also a hopeful push to get more people to track down limited IMAX screenings, which Coogler himself is such a supporter of that he recently put together a 10-minute video demonstrating its effects.

While we’re a long ways away from the official awards season, Sinners is already generating buzz as the first true contender of 2025. We won’t make any bets at this point but right now it’s absolutely in the conversation of Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor/Actress, Best Original Screenplay, and Best Cinematography. But for all of that (and more?) to pan out in Sinners’ favor, it will have to gain back the momentum it will inevitably lose. Here’s hoping there’s an awards season IMAX re-release.

Here is the plot for Sinners: “Trying to leave their troubled lives behind, twin brothers (Jordan) return to their hometown to start again, only to discover that an even greater evil is waiting to welcome them back.”

What did you think of Sinners? Give us your spoiler-free review in the comments section below!

Weekend Box Office: Sinners has an incredible hold in week 2; Sith beats The Accountant 2 https://www.joblo.com/sinners-has-an-incredible-hold/ https://www.joblo.com/sinners-has-an-incredible-hold/#respond Sun, 27 Apr 2025 16:43:49 +0000 https://www.joblo.com/?p=838021 Sinners dropped a mere 6% in its second weekend, almost unheard of for a movie that opened above $40 million.

Can you hear that? POP! That’s the sound of champagne corks popping at Warner Bros in Burbank this morning. While last weekend’s $48 million opening for Sinners was viewed as solid, many in the industry wondered whether or not, with a soft international launch, the movie was poised to turn a profit. This weekend, the resounding answer is hell yes, with the film only dipping 6% in week 2 for a $45 million weekend, and a $122 million total. The A CinemaScore rating proves that word-of-mouth on Ryan Coogler’s vampire epic is terrific, with the movie looking like a shoo-in for a domestic total well north of $200 million. That’s a stunning number for an R-rated horror flick, although it seems to be playing more like an action blockbuster than anything else. Clearly, this will make WB a whole boatload of cash and only further enhance Coogler and star Michael B. Jordan’s reputations as two of the biggest up-and-coming names in the biz.

Meanwhile, the second-place battle was tight, with the re-release of Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith narrowly beating The Accountant 2. Sith made $25.2 million compared to The Accountant 2’s $24.4 million (slightly better than we predicted). Indeed, that’s a giant number for the Sith re-release, with it only having a limited one-week run as Disney likely doesn’t want anything competing with Thunderbolts next weekend. With an A-minus CinemaScore rating, the hope is that The Accountant 2 will rally in week two, as the opening is a little soft, although (not adjusted for inflation) it’s almost exactly what the first movie made nine years ago.

Star Wars The Accountant

A Minecraft Movie, by far the year’s highest-grossing movie, added another $22.7 million to the till, boasting a huge $379 million domestic gross. Another video game adaptation out this weekend, Sony’s Until Dawn, didn’t fare nearly as well, only making $8 million. Given the low $7 million budget, it’s unlikely to spill too much red ink for the studio, but I’m sure they’re disappointed as the film likely had franchise potential.

Angel Studio’s King of Kings, their animated retelling of the life of Christ, fell 77% this weekend, which isn’t a surprise as the film’s box office was hugely boosted by the Easter holiday last weekend. With a $54 million domestic gross, it’s still Angel’s second biggest movie ever, after Sound of Freedom, and a much-needed box office win for them. 20th Century Studios’s Rami Malek thriller, The Amateur, made $3.8 million for a $33.8 million domestic haul. While that’s only a modest stateside number, international business on this one has been brisk, likely to pass $100 million internationally. But the time it hits Hulu, it should break even for the studio, which Disney owns.

Sadly, A24’s terrible 2025 is only getting worse. Their terrific Warfare only made $2.6 million for a modest $21.8 million total (only a third of what director Alex Garland’s Civil War made last year). At the same time, their family adventure movie, The Legend of Oshi, tanked with a terrible $1.4 million this weekend. Between that, Opus, and Death of a Unicorn, the studio really needs a hit, although I think their film Friendship, which I loved at TIFF, could be a cult hit in the waiting.

Finally, ninth place belonged to the restored Pink Floyd at Pompeii concert film from 1971, which made a terrific $2.6 million. Between this and Sith, it’s clear that specialty releases are something studios should focus on a lot more. Heck, it seems inevitable that Disney puts out some more Star Wars this year. Ya know, it’s The Empire Strikes Back’s 45th anniversary this year. Just sayin’….

After a disastrous winter at the North American box office, exhibitors finally have some good news, with April proving to be a barn-burner, propelled by two hugely successful films. Ironically, the two films in question, A Minecraft Movie and Sinners, come from Warner Bros, who, in the wake of Joker: Folie à Deux and Mickey 17, were seen as being in the middle of a disastrous slate of films. Oh, how the tide has changed. After a solid $48 million opening last weekend, Sinners looks like it might be posting one of the smallest week-to-week declines in recent memory, with it heading for at least $40 million this weekend. That’s about $10 million more than we predicted earlier this week.

Meanwhile, the Ben Affleck-led The Accountant 2 seems like it will open more or less in line with the first film, with it looking like it’ll probably make about $25 million (according to Deadline). It has a terrific A-minus CinemaScore rating, so hopefully word-of-mouth will be strong, and it won’t be totally decimated by Thunderbolts, which comes out next weekend. That said, The Accountant 2 will likely be a smash hit once it starts streaming on Prime Video, so hopefully we’ll still get a third film in the franchise. Whether it gets to theaters or not seems to be up in the air, and likely depends on word of mouth. Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith is on track for a $20 million weekend, which is a mammoth number for a re-release, proving people love seeing old favourites theatrically. I’d expect Disney to put more Star Wars movies out on the big screen before The Mandalorian and Grogu opens next year, as it seems like an absolute no-brainer.

However, it also looks like Sony’s video game adaptation, Until Dawn, which earned a pretty bad C+ CinemaScore rating, is heading for an underwhelming $7 million weekend. That said, it only cost Sony about $15 million, so when foreign grosses are factored in, it should more or less break even.

We’ll be back with a full box office wrap-up tomorrow!

As far as the box office goes, timing is everything. And, it seems like The Accountant 2, which was riding a terrific wave of buzz following its SXSW world premiere, might be a victim of timing, with the movie looking unlikely to beat Ryan Coogler’s Sinners at the box office this weekend. While the $48 million opening was considered solid, the film’s mid-week performance at the box office has been extraordinary. That aspect, coupled with the rare A CinemaScore rating, has many believing that the film will easily snatch the box office throne this weekend, despite the combined star power of Ben Affleck and Jon Bernthal.

As such, Sinners should be able to easily crack $30 million at the box office this weekend, while The Accountant 2 should make in the neighborhood of $20 million. Why so low? For one thing, The Accountant 2 is a sequel to a nine-year-old movie. While it did solid box office, it wasn’t a blockbuster; it became a major hit once it hit streaming and home media. That seems likely to happen for the sequel as well, as it’s targeting the over-35 audience who, increasingly, are choosing to watch movies at home rather than theatrically. The Accountant 2 is produced by Amazon/MGM, meaning it will eventually find a place streaming on Prime Video, where it will, no doubt, become one of their more popular titles. That said, I really liked the movie and would dig the hell out of an Accountant 3, so I’m hoping it does better than expected.

Another movie that could play the spoiler this week is the re-release of Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith. Last year, The Phantom Menace opened to $8.8 million, but resales suggest Sith will at least double its take, and we’re predicting about $18 million. It would be a shame if this re-release topped The Accountant 2, but that’s where we are in the business today. A Minecraft Movie should hit fourth place with about $15 million, while King of Kings should round out the top five with $10 million.

Here are our predictions:

  1. Sinners: $30 million
  2. The Accountant 2: $20 million
  3. Revenge of the Sith: $18 million
  4. A Minecraft Movie: $15 million
  5. King of Kings: $10 million

What do you think will top the box office this weekend? Let us know!

Ryan Coogler and Michael B. Jordan introduce a creepy clip from their vampire movie Sinners, coming to theatres in April

Sinners has been building hype ever since Ryan Coogler and Michael B. Jordan had studios discreetly read their script in a supervised session. Then, studios began a bidding war for a film that no one knew details about, except that it was a “genre movie.” That genre turned out to be a period vampire film and audiences turned out for Sinners this past week with a huge positive response and rave reviews. In his review, our own Chris Bumbray says, “It’s good enough that I can’t help but hope Coogler eventually parts ways with the MCU (after his next Black Panther flick), as he seems better off playing in his own sandbox. Given the right resources and support, Sinners might be the beginning of a whole new chapter for one of our most exciting, emerging filmmakers.”

According to The Hollywood Reporter, writer and director Ryan Coogler wrote a letter of gratitude for the overwhelming response from audiences this week. He writes,

Eternal gratitude. My heart is bursting with it. I want to thank each and every one of you who bought a ticket to see Sinners. Who decided to drive to see the film in different formats. Who bought popcorn and a drink, booked a sitter and carpooled, and stood in the lobby afterward and talked and made a friend. Who changed their work schedules. Who saw the film in groups.”

Coogler continues to write, “I want to thank you all who watching more than once, who recommended the film to others, both in person and on social media or on your text message chains. I had the gift of the opportunity of making a film inspired by my family and my ancestry but it was always a film that we wanted to make for audiences, in theaters. We always had our minds on you, the audience, and felt a deep responsibility to entertain you, and move you in the way only cinema can.”

The Black Panther director stated that Sinners was his love letter to cinema and shot the film with IMAX cameras. He even gave a shout-out to Christopher Nolan in the credits of the film for being an inspiration and paving the way by bringing the IMAX medium to non-documentary films, starting with The Dark Knight. Coogler also wrote that he “unabashedly reached towards my cinematic influences” and named-dropped Spike Lee, John Singleton, Ernie Barnes, Steve McQueen, Ava DuVernay, Quentin Tarantino, Paul Thomas Anderson, Jordan Peele, David Cronenberg, David Lynch, Christopher Nolan, Emma Thomas, Francis Ford Coppola, Steven Spielberg, Martin Scorsese, George Lucas and Stephen King, among several others.

weekend box office 01

It looks like our box office predictions for the weekend ended up coming true after all. In a surprise reversal, Sinners, which looked like it was going to have to settle for a second-place debut at the Easter box office, rallied thanks to performing stronger-than-expected on Saturday evening. As it stands, Ryan Coogler’s vampire pic will dominate the weekend box office, with a $45.6 million gross compared to A Minecraft Movie’s still potent $41 million (in its third weekend). Boasting an amazing A CinemaScore rating, word of mouth may well propel Sinners to a stateside finish north of $100 million. Notably, this is the first time a horror film has ever gotten such a strong rating, with only movies like A Quiet Place 1 & 2 managing anything north of a B in the last decade. However, it will likely be up to foreign gross to see if the film ultimately turns a profit theatrically (the $100 million budget is seen as risky for a horror film).

Whatever the case, Warner Bros can claim the two top spots this weekend, with A Minecraft Movie passing $344 million in its third week of release, making it the runaway smash hit of the year (so far). Another studio that has some bragging rights is Angel Studios, whose animated movie about Jesus, King Of Kings, only fell a mere 11% in week two to post a $17.2 million weekend, with a total north of $45 million. It’s already the studio’s second top-grossing movie behind their smash hit Sound of Freedom

The Amateur

The Rami Malek thriller, The Amateur, also held up decently, only losing 51% of its audience in week 2 to make $7.2 million, with a $27 million total. While a finish in the $40 million region is nothing to brag about, those are still decent numbers for a low key thriller, with it not too far off from the kinds of grossing routinely pulled in by Jason Statham (although it’s unlikely Malek’s film will have the same kind of international pull Statham’s has).

Alex Garland and Ray Mendoza’s Warfare rounded out the top five with $4.85 million and a $17.1 million gross, which is mediocre for such a well-reviewed film. A24 has struggled at the box office this year, but hopefully, movies like Friendship and Bring Her Back, which seem more old-school in their appeal, will help them rally.

Meanwhile, the really solid Blumhouse title Drop has proven to be a flop, with it only grossing $3.35 million for a $13.4 million total, making it a rare misfire commercially for the company. The rest of the top ten is largely filled with specialty releases. The anime musical, Colorful Stage made $2.76 million, while the re-release of Joe Wright’s Pride and Prejudice wasn’t far behind with $2.7 million. Finally, the last round of The Chosen Last Supper episodes was in ninth place with $1.8 million and a $11.6 million total. Finally, Disney’s ultra-flop, Snow White, rounded out the top ten with only $1.17 million and an $84 million total, which is disastrous for a movie that cost over $250 million.

Next weekend sees the release of The Accountant 2. Will it be able to nab the top spot from Sinners and A Minecraft Movie? Let us know in the comments!

Minecraft Sinners

While Ryan Coogler’s Sinners is on the receiving end of great reviews (including our own) and word-of-mouth, it looks like our prediction that the film would over-index this weekend and beat A Minecraft Movie to take the top spot over Easter Weekend isn’t coming true. According to Deadline, Sinners is on track to gross $40 million, compared to A Minecraft Movie’s $45 million. It’s a rare double whammy for Warner Bros, who own the top spots this holiday weekend. That’s a huge turnaround given how dire their box office situation was just a month ago. Given that Sinners cost in the $100 million range, that’s a very decent start for a movie that should hopefully leg out to consistent business in the weeks ahead. However, it can’t be denied that with the rapturous critical reception, the opening might be a little underwhelming.

Otherwise, Angel Studios’ King of Kings is playing well over the easter holiday, with it looking to only drop about 6% from last week for a $17.5 million weekend, and a $45 million total. It’s already Angel’s second-highest-grossing movie after Sound of Freedom. The Rami Malek vehicle, The Amateur, also had a decent hold, with it looking like it will fall under 50% to a $7.5 million weekend. It should leg out to about $45 million or so at the box office, which isn’t bad for a low-key thriller like this one. A24’s Warfare also showed some staying power, with it looking like it will make about $4.65 million for the weekend with a $17 million total.

Further down the chart, Focus Features’s 20th anniversary re-release of Pride and Prejudice is performing well, with it on track for about a $2.6 million weekend on only about 1300 screens.

What are you going to see this Easter Weekend? Let us know in the comments!

Sinners, a genre picture and a period piece from frequent collaborators Ryan Coogler and Michael B. Jordan – who have worked on Fruitvale Station, Creed, Black Panther, and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever together as director and cast member, and have other collaborations that Coogler didn’t direct – has now made its way out into theatres. There have been a lot of highly positive reactions for this one, with JoBlo’s own Chris Bumbray adding to the chorus of rave reviews with his own 9/10 write-up. Now, we want to know: what did you think of Sinners?

Directed by Coogler with Jordan playing dual roles, Sinners has the following official synopsis: Trying to leave their troubled lives behind, twin brothers (Jordan) return to their hometown to start again, only to discover that an even greater evil is waiting to welcome them back. “You keep dancing with the devil, one day he’s gonna follow you home.”

This project is being kept so tightly under wraps that when it was looking for a studio to call home, “executives and buyers were forced to make the pilgrimage to the Beverly Hills offices of WME, the agency that represents Coogler and Jordan, in order to take a gander on the script and get details.” It ended up at Warners Bros. with a budget of around $90 million.

Jordan is joined in the cast by Hailee Steinfeld (True Grit), Wunmi Mosaku (Loki), singer Miles Caton, Delroy Lindo (Get Shorty), Jack O’Connell (Unbroken), Omar Benson Miller (CSI: Miami), Li Jun Li (The Exorcist TV series), Yao (The Last Bout), Jayme Lawson (The Batman), Lola Kirke (Mozart in the Jungle), and musician / cinematographer Peter Dreimanis.

What did you think of Sinners? After you check the movie out on the big screen, let us know by leaving a comment below.

Ryan Coogler’s latest collaboration with Black Panther star Michael B. Jordan, Sinners, is off to a tasty start at the box office. Coogler’s period vampire movie drained $4.7M from wallets during Thursday previews, with shows beginning at 3 p.m. Sinners currently holds a 97% Fresh score on Rotten Tomatoes, with an Audience Score of 96%. Sinners focuses on a family trying to leave their troubled lives behind. When twin brothers return to their hometown to start again, they discover that an even greater evil is waiting to welcome them back. Regarding diversity demos, Sinners saw 46% Black, 30% Caucasian, 15% Latino and Hispanic, and 5% Asian in audience attendance. Sinners is booked at 3,308 theaters, including premium auditoriums of Imax 70MM, Imax digital, 70MM, Dolby, PLFs, and motion seats.

Sinners isn’t the only film taking a bite out of the box office. Warner Bros/Legendary’s A Minecraft Movie continues to build its empire by adding $6.5M to its coffers for a domestic total of $303.3M. A Minecraft Movie sits at an astonishing $570.5M+ global total, and tickets are still selling like hotcakes. The movie should see decent earnings throughout the Easter Weekend because grades K-12 are off for the bunny-eared holiday.

Other Thursday totals include The King of Kings with $2.4M (+15% over Wednesday), The Amateur with $1M, Alex Garland’s Warfare with $1M, and Drop with $891K.

JoBlo’s editor-in-chief, Chris Bumbray, reviewed Sinners for the site and loved it! In his write-up, Chris says Sinners is “the kind of elevated blockbuster a guy like Christopher Nolan churns out.” Chris calls the film “invigorating,” adding that he can’t wait to watch it again. “Given the right resources and support, Sinners might be the beginning of a whole new chapter for one of our most exciting, emerging filmmakers,” Chris says about Coogler’s efforts for the bold, new film.

Despite family coming into town, you may find time to sneak to the theater to check out Sinners. Horror is back in a big way, with movies like The Monkey, Companion, and Heart Eyes giving audiences reasons to clutch their armrests and wolf down a bucket of buttery popcorn. Sinners could be the best of the bunch so far, so don’t miss it!

The final film in Sony Animation‘s Spider-Verse trilogy, Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, is swinging into production. Franchise vets Bob Persichetti and Justin K. Thompson will direct the highly anticipated threequel, striving for perfection after the first two films helped Spider-Verse become one of the most sought-after animated franchises ever. The last entry, Across the Spider-Verse, was released in 2023, but fans have a lengthy wait for Beyond the Spider-Verse, which is slated to release on June 4, 2027. According to Deadline, while Steinfeld promotes her new film, Sinners, she spoke with MTV about the upcoming animated movie.

Steinfeld told Josh Horowitz, “We’re well into that thing.” And while the actress who’s worked with Marvel on a few occasions didn’t want to accidentally spill any details, she simply stated, “You’ve gotta trust the process.” Then, she continued, “If there’s one thing I’ve learned with that — it’s that. You put it in their hands and you’re gonna end up with something masterful. So just gotta go with it.” Phil Lord, Chris Miller, Amy Pascal, and Avi Arad return as Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse producers, with Jinko Gotoh producing. Aditya Sood and Christina Steinberg are executive producers, and Jessica Berri is a co-producer. Phil Lord and Christopher Miller wrote the script alongside David Callaham, together performing the task of webbing up all the loose ends to one of animation’s most robust, multi-verse-spanning plots.

Meanwhile, Steinfeld is starring in the new Ryan Coogler film, Sinners, which stars Michael B. Jordan, and the trailers have showcased how the normally reserved actress has embraced a more provocative nature for the horror film. According to People, Steinfeld addressed her fans (who would skew on the younger side) and said in a newsletter, “… This role is far removed from what I’ve done, but that’s part of what drew me to it! I feel like I’m stepping into my own more and more as I get older, and this role mirrors that.” She revealed that she took the role without hesitation, “The minute I heard Ryan Coogler, I was in. Then I read his script and was like, ‘Holy s—, this feels like a massive undertaking.’ The story is so complex and layered,” wrote Steinfeld. “… I was so fortunate and honored to even be remotely considered.”

PLOT: Twin brothers Smoke and Stack (Michael B. Jordan) return to their Jim Crow-era southern home to open a juke joint. While anticipating trouble from the Klan, it turns out they have another enemy they could have never anticipated.

REVIEW: It’s hard to make a vampire movie feel fresh, but that’s what director Ryan Coogler has done with Sinners, perhaps his best film to date. Expertly marrying the classic “survive the night” premise, which has paid such hefty dividends for everything from Assault on Precinct 13 to From Dusk Till Dawn, Coogler’s made an emotional, blood-soaked epic that may well go down as a classic of its kind.

Running 137 minutes, the movie takes its time building up the atmosphere of Smoke and Stack’s southern home, with us getting to know a disparate cast of characters. This makes the horror aspect all the more potent when it kicks in, as you’ve become emotionally invested with everyone by the time they start getting picked off. Chief among them are Smoke and Stack themselves, WWI veterans who’ve made a chunk of cash they plan on using to open a roadhouse that can serve their community – and hopefully, make them rich. Of the two, Smoke is the more thoughtful and eager to pick up with his one-time lover, a medicinal healer who serves the community named Annie (Wunmi Mosaku). On the other hand, Stack is more of a hustler, but he’s also emotionally involved with the white woman, Mary (Hailee Steinfeld) the twins grew up with, and who still loves him.

Meanwhile, there’s their blues-playing cousin, Miles Caton’s Sammie, whose talent is so fierce it can’t help but wake up a demonic force they’ll all have to contend with. This comes in the form of Jack O’Connell’s Irish vampire, Remmick, who tries to lure them in with a promise of eternal life but also, finally, some sense of equality. Coogler does an excellent job evoking the time and the place with gorgeous 2:76:1 Ultra Panavision lensing by Autumn Durald Arkapaw, which opens up to full 1:44:1 IMAX during many key sequences in a superb use of the format.

The Ryan Coogler / Michael B. Jordan horror film Sinners, which reaches theatres in April, has unveiled a full trailer

While the horror and action elements are plentiful and will no doubt be what really draws in an audience, there’s more to Sinners. In fact, it’s almost a quasi-musical, with the blues-driven score, which contains several songs produced by composer Ludwig Göransson and sung by Caton and O’Connell, with his musical appreciation part of Remmick’s silver-tongued appeal.

Coogler does a masterful job mounting the film, so much so that even the first half, which plays more like a blues-infused historical drama, plays exceptionally well. Some jaw-dropping moments could have fallen apart in another director’s hands because of how wildly ambitious they are. Yet, even a moment where Caton’s playing conjures up musicians from the past, present and future, which sounds absurd, works brilliantly and is one of the movie’s finest scenes.

At the same time, horror and action fans will be well-served, with loads of carnage and action. Jordan, as always, is a more than capable action hero – one of the best to emerge in the last few years. Yet, it’s the emotional aspect of the film that gives it some real staying power, with Jordan’s doomed romance with Steinfeld given heft, with her a plain-spoken, headstrong, but kind woman who, more than anyone, knows how dangerous her love can be in the Jim Crow south. Plus, there’s Delroy Lindo as a worn-out old bluesman who finds himself reinvigorated by Caton’s talent, and as Mosaku’s Annie, whose fierce love protects our heroes when things get crazy. Sinners will also put Miles Canton on the map, with his character, Sammie, in many ways the true lead, being a preacher’s son torn between his cousins, who encourage his talent but operate on the margins with their shady pasts, and his devout father. Sammie seems somewhat inspired by the myths around bluesman Robert Johnson who, as legend says, sold his soul to the devil in a Faustian pact.

Hopefully, audiences will turn out to see Sinners in droves. It’s the kind of elevated blockbuster a guy like Christopher Nolan churns out (he earns a thank you in the credits), with Coogler really working at that level here. It’s an invigorating piece of work that I can’t wait to see again. It’s good enough that I can’t help but hope Coogler eventually parts ways with the MCU (after his next Black Panther flick), as he seems better off playing in his own sandbox. Given the right resources and support, Sinners might be the beginning of a whole new chapter for one of our most exciting, emerging filmmakers.

This weekend promises to showcase one of the closest box office battles in recent memory, with both Ryan Coogler’s Sinners and A Minecraft Movie looking to take the top spot. While Easter Weekend means that family audiences will no doubt flock to see A Minecraft Movie this weekend, I think Coogler’s R-rated vampire epic is bound to eke out a win.

While tracking suggests a $35-40 million opening, I feel that Sinners will open closer to the $50 million range. One thing that I think forecasters aren’t counting on is how strong Coogler’s film is going to be with the same black family audience that turned his two Black Panther movies into box office smash hits. While the R-rating will limit business somewhat, older kids and their parents will for sure go see this one, while the movie is also pretty much guaranteed significant crossover success among horror fans, superhero fans, action fanatics, and just about everyone else.

The fact is, Coogler is becoming a reliable brand, and people are excited to check out his movie – especially with the reviews being so strong (ours drops tomorrow morning). Heck, there’s a chance it could even open north of $50 million. That said, A Minecraft Movie shouldn’t be too far behind it, with it also looking at a weekend in the $45 million range, which would give Warner Bros two pretty huge smash hits over the weekend (Sinners also has a strong foothold on premium screens, with it opening on large format IMAX screens).

In third place, I’m expecting Angel Studios’s King of Kings to take advantage of the holiday weekend, and have a very modest week-to-week decline, with it on track for about $12 million. It should be followed by The Amateur, with about $8 million, while Warfare should take in around $5 million.

Here are my predictions:

  1. Sinners: $50 million
  2. A Minecraft Movie: $45 million
  3. King of Kings: $12 million
  4. The Amateur: $8 million
  5. Warfare: $5 million

aspect ratios

To sit among the likes of Steven Spielberg, Quentin Tarantino, Paul Thomas Anderson, and Christopher Nolan is a huge honor for any filmmaker. That it’s all for the cause of promoting the use of film is all the better. And that’s just what Ryan Coogler is doing, having most recently gone big on his upcoming movie Sinners, which was shot with both the IMAX MSM 9802 and UDM LensesPanavision Panaflex System 65 Studio. Hopefully that’s not too technical because Ryan Coogler is about to give us the most comprehensive lesson on film stock and aspect ratios that you can get in just 10 minutes. Seriously, you’ll never hear the word “perforations” so much again in your life!

Ryan Coogler recently paired with Kodak to offer a tutorial on the differences between all of the film stocks available as well as the usage of various aspect ratios. After a rundown that shows the distinct visual difference between, say, Super 8 and 65/70 mm, Ryan Coogler started in on aspect ratios and why they’re so important when it comes to capturing not just the visuals but the story itself.

Ryan Coogler kicked off this portion of his video by showing off a Sinners clip in 2.76:1, an aspect ratio that we’ve seen before on epics like Ben-Hur and The Hateful Eight. He also noted that Sinners is IMAX’s 1.43:1 and that the movie is the only to ever be shot in both aspect ratios. So take a walk, DeMille! This part of the video is a little hard to put into words, but once you see a clip that transforms depending on the aspect ratio it’s projected in, you see the effect that it has on the film (literally!).

But chances are you’re going to be quite limited in how you’re able to see Sinners, as not every theater has the capability to. For example, the IMAX Film with 15 perforations and on 70mm, is only available on 10 screens in the entire world. That said, Ryan Coogler took the time to note that Sinners will be available in several different formats – and based on the early reactions, it will be worth it: 4DX, ICE (Immersive Cinema Experience), Screen X (which offers an even wider experience at 270 degrees), and Dolby Cinema (showcasing HDR).

You can check out Ryan Coogler’s crash course on film stocks and aspect ratios by watching the embedded video below:

Black Panther and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever director Ryan Coogler is expected to make Black Panther 3 at some point – in fact, there has already been a lot of talk about Denzel Washington joining the cast of that movie. But before he returns to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Coogler has decided to make Sinners, a genre picture and a period piece he worked on with frequent collaborator Michael B. Jordan. The film is set up at Warner Bros., has a budget of around $90 million, and is scheduled for a theatrical release on April 18, 2025 (having moved back from a previously announced March release date). During an interview with Deadline, Coogler explained why he decided to make Sinners before Black Panther 3.

This project is being kept so tightly under wraps that when it was looking for a studio to call home, “executives and buyers were forced to make the pilgrimage to the Beverly Hills offices of WME, the agency that represents Coogler and Jordan, in order to take a gander on the script and get details.”

Coogler (who is also developing a reboot of the TV series The X-Files) is producing the film with Proximity Media partners Zinzi Coogler and Sev Ohanian. Rebecca Cho serves as executive producer alongside Will Greenfield and two-time Oscar-winning composer Ludwig Goransson (who won his first Oscar for his work on Coogler’s Black Panther and his second for Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer). The Motion Picture Association ratings board gave the film an R rating for strong bloody violence, sexual content and language.

Jordan is joined in the cast by Hailee Steinfeld (True Grit), Wunmi Mosaku (Loki), singer Miles Caton, Delroy Lindo (Get Shorty), Jack O’Connell (Unbroken), Omar Benson Miller (CSI: Miami), Li Jun Li (The Exorcist TV series), Yao (The Last Bout), Jayme Lawson (The Batman), Lola Kirke (Mozart in the Jungle), and musician / cinematographer Peter Dreimanis.

Coogler told Deadline that he chose to make Sinners before Black Panther 3 because he realized “I had been on this path of what I could make and what I wanted to make. And realizing they had all been in the service of stories that were outside of myself. … I found a way into all of them, but Fruitvale Station was a real story that happened. Creed, that I was making for my dad, that was my way in, but that was Sly Stallone’s, and Irwin Winkler and Bob Chartoff, their thing. I reframed it and made it personal, but that was still their thing. Black Panther, that was an open directing assignment, a job I was hired for. Thankfully the studio was interested in my perspective, in my reframing, and it was four years into that fabric, bro, because of the tragedy we all endured. But I looked up, and I got two kids now, one was born in Georgia while I was there making a movie. And I said, bro, I’m almost 40. I got this company that can make things. I’ve engaged with audiences all over the planet, man. Who can say, at my age, that they’ve had four movies released theatrically? And yet I still haven’t really opened myself up to the audience.” The filmmaker acknowledged that there have been “pieces of him” in his work, but “I still haven’t brought something that was just me. And how funny is it that when I say, ‘Hey, I’m making a horror movie,’ and people are surprised. But if you know me, I love those movies. If I had to reckon with the fact that the audience doesn’t truly know me. And I got scared that I would look up and be 50 and would still be in that situation. And by then, I might not have anything to say. So the movie was made because I had to make it right now. And with the people that I wanted to make it with, it had to happen now. Or if not, it wouldn’t. I feared that. And that was why now.

When asked what his go-to horror movies are, Coogler replied, “I consider Spielberg’s work in the horror space to be a bit of a North Star. And it is complicated with him, right, because he hasn’t out and out made a horror movie before. But I would classify Jaws as a creature feature horror film, and Jurassic Park as well. Jurassic Park is a stealth horror movie. The whole thing of, what if dinosaur were real? But when you talk about those T-Rex scenes, the Velociraptor intro, the ‘raptors in the Kitchen, that is out and out horror cinema. And it is popular. It is visceral. It gets the audience feeling like they’re on a damn roller coaster ride. Then there’s this movie that came out in 2015 called Green Room. It’s fantastic. And it is basically like the house of horrors movie played for real over 24 hours. This semi-pro punk band gets stuck in a venue in rural Oregon that’s owned by neo-Nazis that are led by Patrick Stewart. And it is brilliant, bro. And the makeup effects are so stark that I hired the guy that did them, for Sinners. A guy named Mike Fontaine, who’s exceptional, a savant. He’s the guy who put the penguin prosthetics on Colin Farrell for that show. Taking it back, I love John Carpenter. My dad’s favorite movie as you know is Rocky II. We never talked about what his second favorite movie is, though, and that’s Halloween. So if I watched Rocky II five times, I watched Halloween three times. One of my mom’s favorite Carpenter films is The Thing. They love Carpenter, but different films and the only film they ever agree on to watch is The Fugitive. Otherwise, he’s watching Steven Seagal films and she’s watching Martin Scorsese films. My dad, every time he’s taking Halloween and maybe Assault on Precinct 13. For mom, it was The Thing. I love it, the isolation, the practical effects, the cosmic horror of it, and the threat, the idea of, ‘Hey, you got to stop this thing, or it’s going to wreck the planet.’ All of a sudden, a rag tag group of guys that can’t figure out how to do a blood test, now have to save the planet. There’s Robert Rodriguez and From Dusk Till Dawn… Even more than From Dusk Till Dawn, I love The Faculty from Rodriguez. I love how he mashed up Invasion of the Body Snatchers and The Thing, but set it in a 1990s high school. I love the confusing mishmash of movie and setting. And then a big one for me that I heard about and finally got to see, was Don’t Look Now. A fu*king masterpiece, bro. And it has the best intimacy scene I’ve ever seen in a movie. And how you got to see these characters experience pleasure and it buttressed how dark the movie actually is, in a way that informs relationships and informs the world. But that movie just took my breath away. Also love Rosemary’s Baby and The Silence of the Lambs.

Now that Ryan Coogler has taken the opportunity to make a horror movie, will you be watching it? Let us know if you’ll be checking out Sinners by leaving a comment below.

The Ryan Coogler / Michael B. Jordan horror film Sinners, which reaches theatres in April, has unveiled a full trailer

The new Michael B. Jordan/Ryan Coogler collaboration, Sinners, has been building hype since it was secretively being shopped around to the big studios last year. The project had the studios in Hollywood excited to bid against each other and Warner Bros. would come out on top. A couple of trailers have since dropped and teased some supernatural mayhem. The ratings board has now revealed that the vampire movie has been Rated R for strong bloody violence, sexual content and language.

Coogler has written the script for this project, which has been described as both a genre picture and a period piece. The project is set up at Warner Bros., has a budget of around $90 million, and is scheduled for a theatrical release on April 18, 2025 (having moved back from a previously announced March release date). Over the holidays, a new teaser (which still has the old release date) was unveiled, as embedded at the top of the article.

Directed by Coogler with Jordan playing dual roles, Sinners has the following official synopsis: Trying to leave their troubled lives behind, twin brothers (Jordan) return to their hometown to start again, only to discover that an even greater evil is waiting to welcome them back. “You keep dancing with the devil, one day he’s gonna follow you home.”  This project is being kept so tightly under wraps that when it was looking for a studio to call home, “executives and buyers were forced to make the pilgrimage to the Beverly Hills offices of WME, the agency that represents Coogler and Jordan, in order to take a gander on the script and get details.”

Jordan is joined in the cast by Jack O’Connell (Unbroken), Delroy Lindo (Get Shorty), Wunmi Mosaku (Loki), Hailee Steinfeld (True Grit), Omar Benson Miller (CSI: Miami), Jayme Lawson (The Batman), Lola Kirke (Mozart in the Jungle), and Li Jun Li (The Exorcist TV series).

Yesterday, a full trailer was released for Sinners, a genre picture and a period piece from frequent collaborators Ryan Coogler and Michael B. Jordan – who have worked on Fruitvale Station, Creed, Black Panther, and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever together as director and cast member, and have other collaborations that Coogler didn’t direct. Once the trailer had been unveiled, Entertainment Weekly released a video in which Coogler and Jordan break it down, and now you can watch that video in the embed above. Coogler and Jordan try to avoid spoilers in this video, but they do talk about the film’s setting (it takes place over one day in 1932) and the characters, particularly the twin brothers played Jordan.

Sinners is set up at Warner Bros., has a budget of around $90 million, and is scheduled for a theatrical release on April 18, 2025 (having moved back from a previously announced March release date).

Last year, a secret genre project was in development from Ryan Coogler and Michael B. Jordan. The project had the studios in Hollywood excited to bid against each other and Warner Bros. would come out on top. The second trailer is due to hit later today. But before then, Warner Bros. has released a new poster of the film featuring Michael B. Jordan with some ominous-looking figures.

Sinners

Coogler has written the script for this project, which has been described as both a genre picture and a period piece. The project is set up at Warner Bros., has a budget of around $90 million, and is scheduled for a theatrical release on April 18, 2025 (having moved back from a previously announced March release date). Over the holidays, a new teaser (which still has the old release date) was unveiled, as embedded at the top of the article.
