weekend box office 01

Magic mirror on the wall, who’s the fairest of them all? Jason Statham, evidently, as his latest action flick, A Working Man, has topped the weekend box office, poisoning the apple of Snow White, which continued its disappointing run by dropping to the number two spot.

A Working Man once again proved that Jason Statham’s fanbase is a continuously loyal one, as the movie – which reunites him with The Beekeeper director David Ayer – earned $15.2 million in its debut weekend, a chisel in its $40 million budget. For a movie that banks on Statham himself (and not an established franchise like Fast and the Furious), that’s pretty good, landing in The Beekeeper territory.

weekend box office 02

Now onto Snow White, which opened last week with just $47 million. The live-action (well, mostly) remake of the Disney classic was bound to fall but we didn’t expect it to do so in such embarrassing fashion, as it slipped nearly 70%. While that still put it as the weekend’s runner-up, it only took in another $14.2 million. For a movie that has a budget pegged upwards of $270 million, this is easily one of the biggest red marks for Disney. Hopefully this will make them reconsider their desire to remake their animated classics (although a lot are still on the calendar)…or at least convince Hollywood to stop casting Gal Gadot.

The rest of the box office was far less dramatic, although a curious choice came in at #3: The Chosen: The Last Supper ($11.5 million), which is actually part of an Amazon MGM Studios deal that sees the fifth season of the faith-based series getting a theatrical release before hitting Amazon. It’s an interesting strategy that is evidently paying off, pulling solid numbers for a movie that has a niche audience.

Blumhouse’s The Woman in the Yard snuck through the gate with $9.4 million. That single-digital number isn’t all that far from the movie’s $12 million budget, although the studio’s non-franchise fare usually at least opens in the doubles. Failing to sparkle was Death of a Unicorn, which poked its way into the top 5 with $5.8 million. You’d think that a movie starring Paul Rudd and Jenna Ortega would have fared far better at the box office but with mid reviews, an R rating and nothing really to grab an audience outside of the cast, it just didn’t have the magic to land.

weekend box office 03

One delight that made the top 10 was Hayao Miyazaki’s Princess Mononoke, now out courtesy of a 4K transfer. No doubt IMAX screens helped boost it to $3.5 million, but I’d also like to think those who were disgusted by OpenAI’s Studio Ghibli-inspired feature headed to the theater as a move of support. And considering its initial domestic run back in 1999 only saw it in 129 theaters, we’re calling this a win all around. Right behind it was Captain America: Brave New World, which, with another $2.75 million to its name, still stands as the highest-grossing movie of 2025 so far.

Meanwhile, Steven Soderbergh’s Black Bag is trying to nudge towards $20 million domestically with its $2.15 million this weekend. Soderbergh isn’t normally a splash at the box office but his movies are almost always worth seeing so good on him for hanging in the top 10 (even if Black Bag won’t recoup its budget, not even earning back half of it on the domestic front). The number nine and 10 spots would go to Bong Joon Ho’s Mickey 17 and the Jack Quaid action flick Novocaine, which is a lot of fun and well worth checking out. Mickey 17 took in $2 with a, while Novocaine earned $1.45 million in its third week. That might seem numb, but considering it has already recouped its budget, any extra bucks are welcome.

As it happens, Chris Bumbray’s box office predictions for this week’s totals underestimated Jason Statham’s ability to put in work. Our editor-in-chief, Chris Bumbray, thought Snow White would retain its top spot, but David Ayer and Jason Statham’s A Working Man hammered its way to the top of the list with a $15.2M debut over Snow White‘s $14.2M. Ah, well. Even a broken clock is right twice a day, right?

Next week will no doubt find a new champ at the box office, as A Minecraft Movie is looking to be a real blockbuster, proving to do well with advanced ticket sales ahead of its release. Other new titles include Lionsgate’s Pedro Pascal-starring Freaky Tales, horror-comedy Hell of a Summer (which is Finn Wolfhard’s co-directorial debut), The Luckiest Man in America (about the infamous Press Your Luck scandal) and Eric Laure (Michael Shannon’s own directorial debut). Mid-week, Screamboat – the latest horror movie taking advantage of copyright lapses – will also open.

What did you catch at the movies this weekend?

Snow White A Working Man

Snow White’s disastrous opening weekend proved to be the talk of the town this week, with many blaming the polarizing Rachel Zegler as having turned off audiences from seeing this pricey remake. Whatever the case, the hope was that it would pull a Mufasa, and hold on to its audience in week two. That’s not proving to be true, with Deadline reporting that the movie will suffer an awful 68% second-week decline, with it only on track for a second weekend in the $13 million range. That’s a full $7 million less than we predicted, and we were rather glum, as folks expected a better hold.

However, Snow White’s misfortune is Jason Statham’s opportunity, with his well-reviewed (by us anyway) A Working Man looking at a solid $15 million weekend. That’s pretty close to what The Beekeeper made last year, and that happened to come out on a holiday weekend. While the B CinemaScore is nothing to write home about, Statham certainly seems to have a strong core audience, and given that the movie was modestly budgeted, it should turn into a valuable library title for Amazon/MGM once it hits streaming. While it’s unlikely to have the same kind of hold Beekeeper had (with it buzzing its way to a $66 million domestic total), the movie shows that there’s still a place for old-school action at the box office, with Den of Thieves 2: Pantera also performing well earlier this year. Audiences still like meat-and-potatoes action flicks.

Universal’s Blumhouse movie, The Woman in the Yard, is performing about the same as usual for the studio, with it on track for a $9 million opening, which isn’t bad. However, A24’s had its second flop in a row, with the star-studded Death of a Unicorn whiffing at the box office with an opening in the $5 million range. That’s pretty bad for a movie that boasts two pretty big stars in leading roles: Paul Rudd and Jenna Ortega. In fact, outside of A Working Man, the only new release to show much muscle was another collection of episodes from The Chosen, with The Last Supper – Part 1 – on track for a very solid $12 million.

We’ll be back tomorrow with a full box office round-up!

Princess Mononoke A Working Man

Princess Mononoke did not come to play during its highly anticipated re-release after slathering on some warpaint and going for the jugular with $1.2M in previews, edging out David Ayer and Jason Statham’s A Working Man by a slight margin. Princess Mononoke, one of filmmaker Hayao Miyazaki’s most outstanding cinematic achievements, returned to cinemas this week at 330 Imax locations with a shiny 4K print. The special screenings are a treat for fans of the 1997 animated epic, especially those who’ve not seen it on the silver screen.

In Hayao Miyazaki’s Princess Mononoke, a cursed young warrior named Ashitaka stumbles into a conflict between the people of Iron Town and Princess Mononoke, a girl raised by wolves who will stop at nothing to prevent the destruction of her home. Can Ashitaka and the princess topple the sinister forces of Iron Town before they destroy the sacred land? Watch the movie and find out!

While Princess Mononoke buried a spear in $1.2M, Ayer and Statham’s latest collaboration, A Working Man, punched a hole through $1.1M, which analysts think could do $10M-$12M across 2,229 locations. Statham’s latest slugfest is a hit with critics, with many saying the action film by David Ayer and Sylvester Stallone has ’80s action movie vibes. JoBlo’s editor-in-chief, Chris Bumbray, enjoyed the hell out of A Working Man, saying the film is “a campy B-movie blast with eighties-style madness.”

Elsewhere, Disney’s live-action Snow White is more ho-hum than hi-ho, with woodland creatures bringing $1.8M on Thursday to Mickey Mouse’s money bin. Despite the remade Disney classic’s mediocre returns, Snow White should keep the top spot at the box office this weekend with an estimated $20M.

Blumhouse and Universal’s new PG-13 horror film, Woman in the Yard, scared $870K out of wallets on Thursday after opening in 2,500 theaters. Last year, Blumhouse’s last PG-13 fright-fest, Imaginary, earned $725K in previews, slightly below yesterday’s debut for Woman in the Yard. Additionally, A24’s Death of a Unicorn, starring Jenna Ortega and Paul Rudd, rammed a forn through $700K, while Robert De Niro’s Alto Knights made off with $175K added to its first-week total of $4.4M.

Never underestimate the lasting appeal of a Studio Ghibli classic, my friends.

Jason Statham and Sylvester Stallone have collaborated on multiple projects over the years, and we’re not just talking about the four Expendables movies they made together. Stallone also wrote the screenplay for the 2013 Statham action film Homefront, which was directed by Gary Fleder and based on a novel by Chuck Logan. Now, Statham and Stallone are continuing their working relationship with the action thriller A Working Man, which also reunites Statham with his The Beekeeper director David Ayer – and looks to be very much along the same lines as that film. A Working Man is set to reach theatres on March 28th, and in anticipation of its release, we decided to put together a list of everything we know about the movie. Here we go:

SOURCE MATERIAL

A Working Man is based on the novel Levon’s Trade, written by Chuck Dixon and originally published in 2014. Dixon is best known for his work in the comic book world, and over the last forty-plus years he has written for the likes of The Punisher, Conan, The Simpsons, G.I. Joe, Moon Knight, Freddy Krueger, and many more. He was DC Comics’ most prolific Batman writer in the 1990s and even took part in the famous Knightfall story arc – you know, the one where Bane (a character Dixon co-created) breaks Batman’s back.

For Levon’s Trade, Dixon crafted the following story: Levon Cade left his profession behind to work construction. He just wants to live an anonymous life and be a good dad to his daughter. But when a local girl vanishes, he’s asked to return to the skills that made him a mythic figure in the shadowy world of counterterrorism. Levon’s hunt for the missing college student takes him to the heart of a vicious criminal conspiracy, and his actions create a chain reaction that threatens all he holds dear. It’s time for him to return to his trade. And Levon’s trade is death. In creating the Levon Cade character, he came up with a character who’s such a badass, one reviewer said he “makes Jack Reacher seem like a crossing guard.”

Sylvester Stallone has long been aware of Dixon’s work – in fact, Dixon has said that he was offered, and turned down, the chance to do a rewrite on the screenplay for The Expendables 2. And when Levon’s Trade hit store shelves, Stallone acquired the adaptation rights. In October of 2018, it was announced that Stallone’s Balboa Productions was developing a Levon’s Trade TV series… but, obviously, it was decided that a film adaptation would be a better option.

CREATIVE TEAM

As mentioned, A Working Man has been directed by The Beekeeper‘s David Ayer, who also worked on the script with Stallone. A couple different synopses have been released for their take on the material. Here’s one: Levon Cade left behind a decorated military career in the black ops to live a simple life working construction. But when his boss’s daughter, who is like family to him, is taken by human traffickers, his search to bring her home uncovers a world of corruption far greater than he ever could have imagined. And here’s the other: Levon Cade left his “profession” behind to live a simple life working construction and spending time with his daughter. But when his boss’s teenage daughter vanishes, he’s called upon to re-employ the skills that made him a legendary figure in the shadowy world of black ops. Levon’s hunt for the missing college student takes him to the heart of a sinister criminal conspiracy creating a chain reaction that will threaten his new way of life. Two different ways of saying the same thing.

Stallone, Statham, and Ayer produced the film alongside Bill Block, John Friedberg, Chris Long, and Kevin King Templeton. When it was announced (and was, at that point, still going by the title Levon’s Trade), Block provided the following statement: “I am thrilled to be reuniting with some of my most talented and longstanding partners on Levon’s Trade. I first worked with David Ayer on Fury and it was immediately clear that he is a director at the very top of his game. Jason and I have worked together on a number of films, and most recently the three of us collaborated on The Beekeeper. Levon’s Trade is going to be another spectacular action movie and I’m confident we’ve assembled the dream team to bring the first novel in this celebrated series to the big screen.

Although the novel primarily takes place in Florida, the movie was filmed in London. Production began in April of 2024 and wrapped at the end of the following month.

CAST

Statham takes on the role of badass military veteran Levon Cade. Arianna Rivas (Prom Dates) plays Jenny, the girl abducted by human traffickers. Michael Peña (Ant-Man) and Noemi Gonzalez (Selena: The Series) play Jenny’s parents. David Harbour (Stranger Things) plays Levon’s blind, weapons-providing associate Gunny Lefferty. Isla Gie (The Outlaws) shows up as Levon’s daughter Merry. Also in the cast are Jason Flemyng (Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels), Emmett J Scanlan (Fool Me Once), Eve Mauro (Cypher), Maximilian Osinski (The Walking Dead: World Beyond), Kristina Poli (Leona End Mark), Andrej Kaminsky (John Wick: Chapter 4), Merab Ninidze (Without Remorse), Cokey Falkow (Doomsday), and more. Because Statham always needs plenty of people to beat up.

It’s sort of surprising that Stallone didn’t reserve the role of Gunny Lefferty for himself. It’s worth nothing that, if Stallone doesn’t show up as any character at all, this will be the first movie he wrote without also appearing in it since Homefront in 2013.

We had a chance to interview both David Harbour and David Ayer about their work on the film, and that interview can be viewed at THIS LINK.

RELEASE

A Working Man was originally aiming for a January 17, 2025 release date. It was then moved back to March 28th, putting it in direct competition with the horror film The Woman in the Yard, from Blumhouse Productions and director Jaume Collet-Serra, and the oddball A24 horror comedy Death of a Unicorn, starring Paul Rudd and Jenna Ortega. This also happens to be one week after the release of Disney’s live-action Snow White and one week before the release of A Minecraft Movie… but those kid-friendly movies are not exactly going for the same audience A Working Man will appeal to.

The film is set up at Amazon MGM Studios, and the company will be giving it a wide theatrical release in the U.S., while Prime Video holds the streaming rights in many major international territories. Outside of those Prime Video international territories (where it may receive a streaming-only release), the producers have sold the film independently to theatrical distributors in multiple overseas markets.

A Working Man has been rated R for strong violence, language throughout, and drug content.

A clip made its way online at the end of February:

Then a trailer was unveiled at the start of March:

With a final trailer dropping just days before the film’s release date:

Around that time, the first reactions to the film were revealed (you can read several of them HERE), letting us know the movie is “pure ’80s-style action with an absurd body count.” JoBlo’s own Chris Bumbray gave the film an 8/10 review that you can read at THIS LINK, or you can check it out in this video:

FRANCHISE POTENTIAL

Chuck Dixon’s Levon Cade series currently consists of twelve novels, as Levon’s Trade has been followed by Levon’s Night, Levon’s Ride, Levon’s Run, Levon’s Kin, Levon’s War, Levon’s Time, Levon’s Home, Levon’s Hunt, Levon’s Prey, Levon’s Range, and Levon’s Scourge. So, if A Working Man turns out to be a box office success, and if Statham is game, this could turn out to be a major franchise for the actor. We’ll have to wait and see how it all plays out.

And that is, for now, everything we know about A Working Man.

PLOT: Levon Cade (Jason Statham) is an ex-commando who now works as the foreman of a construction site in Chicago. When human traffickers abduct the teen daughter of his employer (Michael Pena), Levon snaps back into commando mode only to discover her abductors are deeply embedded with a secret faction of the Russian mob. Naturally, all hell breaks loose.

REVIEW: Jason Statham and David Ayer have a nice thing going. The Beekeeper revitalized their careers to a certain extent, with Ayer putting a superb polish on what could have been a run-of-the-mill action flick, turning into perhaps Statham’s best solo action vehicle. And now, they’re back at it again with the Sylvester Stallone-penned A Working Man, which is based on the novel “Levon’s Trade” by Chuck Dixon (a way better title than the Seagal-like A Working Man).

Like The Beekeeper, it allows Statham to play expertly to type. One of the problems I’ve always had with him is that, like many of his contemporaries (Vin Diesel, The Rock), he refuses to take his licks on screen, with him too inscrutable a hero. Given that it’s not likely to change, Ayer’s Beekeeper used that aspect as a strength, turning him into a good guy who’s so indestructible it becomes amusing. In both The Beekeeper and now, A Working Man, his hero character is almost more like a horror movie slasher, with the fun coming from the various, gruesome ways he dispatches his incredibly outclassed opponents, who you’re itching to see die in horrifying ways – which Statham delivers. It’s a formula that works for him, with them dropping any pretence of making him a relatable, nice guy hero. He’s a force of nature; when he’s unleashed, there’s hell to pay. He might be the most menacing action hero since Charles Bronson.

A Working Man review

While it’s maybe a notch below The Beekeeper, it’s still a well-crafted flick, with Ayer adopting the same technique that served him well in his last go-round with Statham. He starts the movie off slowly but steadily and ramps the action up to the point that, by the climax, the scale has gotten bigger and bigger, with Statham seemingly off’ing hundreds of bad guys by the time the credits roll.

Like in The Beekeeper, the bad guys are so detestable that you won’t find yourself feeling the least bit guilty as Ayer ramps up the audience’s blood lust. Last time, it was scammers preying on the elderly; this time, it’s Russian mobsters trafficking teenage girls. It’s familiar territory for Stallone, who co-wrote the screenplay (with Ayer) and also produced it for his frequent collaborator, Statham, with it hitting the same theme as Rambo: Last Blood. Like Ayer, he knows how to play to his star’s strengths by building up the bad guys to be so over-the-top in their depravity that once Statham starts relieving them of their teeth and lives, you’re cheering him on.

While there’s no central bad guy, that formula, which I’d usually hate, serves A Working Man well. The film works the same way Beekeeper did, in that every time a bad guy we think is the main villain is dispatched, another, even worse one pops up. The carnage borders on being spectacular, with the climax a particular highlight. Statham is at his best as Levon, in a role similar to a part Sly might have written for himself back in the day – with him having at least a hint of vulnerability as he has a daughter he’s trying to reunite with. Levon is a hero in the John Rambo or Marion Cobretti mode, with a hint of Lincoln Hawk worked in for good measure (if you know who all these guys are – this is the movie for you).

Of the supporting cast, David Harbour makes the biggest impression as Levon’s former gunnery sergeant, who’s now blind but serves as his confidante and defacto armourer. Jason Flemyng, an old co-star of Statham’s from back in the Guy Ritchie days, also shows up as an early bad guy for Levon to mess with, although given the formula, he isn’t around too long. Arianna Rivas also makes for a spunkier-than-expected kidnap victim, with Sly and Ayer giving her much more to do than is typical of the genre.

So, if A Working Man is so much fun, why is it still a notch or so below The Beekeeper (which – to me – is one of the best American action movies of the last few years)? For me, the movie has a few moments that fall flat, such as a motorcycle chase, which is more confusing than awesome, while Michael Pena is utterly wasted in a nothing role as Levon’s boss, whose daughter is kidnapped. The movie also isn’t quite as dazzlingly well-shot as The Beekeeper, although it has some impressive production design (I especially liked how one of the baddies had an Iron Throne made of Motorcycle parts). These are relatively minor quibbles, though, as overall action fans should eat this up. While it will likely only do OK business theatrically, expect this one to have a long life once it hits streaming. I know I’ll be giving it another watch before long.

Ever since Jason Statham shot to stardom, I’ve found myself quite the fan. Whether it’s Crank, The Transporter, or Safe, I dig the guy. And his latest, the David Ayer directed A Working Man, happens to offer a fun time with the on-screen action. Jason Statham portrays Levon Cade, a good dad and a construction worker. However, when a local girl is taken, he decides to help out a friend, and retool his special skills. Yep, the dude has a history in the world of counter-terrorism. The film also stars Michael Pena, Jason Flemyng, and David Harbour.

We recently had the pleasure of speaking one on one with both Mr. Harbour and Mr. Ayer. For David, he discussed working with Ayer and Statham. And while he has a smaller role, the actor commands the screen every single time. As for Ayer, we talked about taking on an action flick that deals with a serious subject matter. He opened up about the idea of continuing with the character in further chapters. He also discussed bringing a bit more reality into the feature. A Working Man feels very much like a more grounded Statham flick, and it also allows for a nice bit of escapism.

Check out A Working Man this Friday at a theatre near you. The film is based on the novel Levon’s Trade, written by Chuck Dixon and originally published in 2014. A Working Man, Jason Statham, David Ayer, reactions, review

If action movies from the ’80s get your blood pumping, you’ll want to pay attention to the hype behind David Ayer and Jason Stathams latest cinematic beat-down, A Working Man. The first reactions to the duo’s latest display of one-man-army madness are making the rounds on social media. From the look of things, we’ve got many reasons to get excited about Statham’s latest showcase of badassery and body-sending one-liners.

According to JoBlo’s Editor-in-Chief, Chris Bumbray, A Working Man is a “campy B-movie blast” that starts off low-key but quickly ramps up with demented madness.

Meanwhile, Variety and The AV Club writer Courtney Howard says A Working Man features “gripping vengeance-fueled beat-downs” and a smattering of sincerity.

Bill Bria of Slash Film says that while A Working Man isn’t The Beekeeper 2, it still packs a punch with Reacher-style brawlin’,” with a taste of Rambo and Hard Target.

Here’s the official synopsis for A Working Man courtesy of Amazon MGM Studios:

Jason Statham continues his collaboration relationship with the director of The Beekeeper, David Ayer. That film saw Statham take on the world of online scammers, which led all the way to the top. Now, Statham takes on a syndicate of human traffickers in A Working Man as he attempts to rescue a young friend from the seedy underworld. The final trailer has now been released from Amazon MGM Studios before it barrels into theaters on March 28.

David Ayer directs A Working Man, based on the novel Levon’s Trade by Chuck Dixon, from a screenplay he wrote with Sylvester Stallone. Statham leads the action bonanza with Jason Flemyng, Merab Ninidze, Maximilian Osinski, and Cokey Falkow, with Michael Peña and David Harbour, Noemi Gonzalez, Arianna Rivas, Emmett J. Scanlan, and Eve Mauro filling out the cast. Chris Long, Jason Statham, John Friedberg, David Ayer, Sylvester Stallone, Bill Block, Kevin King Templeton produce.

“Levon Cade (Statham) left his ‘profession’ behind him to go straight and work in construction,” reads the official synopsis for A Working Man. “He wants to live a simple life and be a good father to his daughter. But when his boss’s teenage daughter Jenny vanishes, he’s called upon to re-employ the skills that made him a legendary figure in the shadowy world of black ops. His hunt for the missing college student takes him deep into the heart of a sinister criminal conspiracy creating a chain reaction that will threaten his new way of life.“

It was recently announced that Statham will be returning for a sequel to The Beekeeper, the action thriller directed by Ayer, which was a surprise hit last year. Ayer won’t be in the director’s chair this time around as he will be busy with Heart of the Beast, a survival thriller starring Brad Pitt and J.K. Simmons. Nobody 2 director Timo Tjahjanto will take the helm this time around, with production set to kick off this fall.

Amazon MGM Studios has dropped the first clip from A Working Man, the upcoming action thriller featuring Jason Statham doing what he does best: kicking ass and grunting monosyllabically.

The clip finds Levon Cade (Statham) brought before Dutch (Chidi Ajufo), who seems to be sitting upon some type of motorcycle club version of the Iron Throne. Dutch suspects that Cade might be a cop and orders his underlings to go through Cade’s pockets. Cue broken limbs, smashed faces, and all-around mayhem. Check out the clip for yourself above!

In addition to Statham, A Working Man also stars Michael Peña, David Harbour, Jason Flemyng, Merab Ninidze, Maximilian Osinski, Cokey Falkow, Noemi Gonzalez, Arianna Rivas, Emmett J. After protecting the hive in The Beekeeper, Jason Statham and David Ayer are laying a foundation for explosive action in A Working Man. The upcoming film from Amazon MGM Studios finds Statham playing a former black ops soldier turned construction whose surrogate family asks him to open a can of whoop-ass after their daughter gets taken by a band of human traffickers. Today’s A Working Man trailer delivers all the goods you expect from a balls-to-the-wall Statham flick, with plenty of hard-hitting, bone-snapping antics to satisfy any action genre fan.

Here’s the official synopsis for A Working Man courtesy of Amazon MGM Studios:

“Levon Cade left behind a decorated military career in the black ops to live a simple life working construction. Jason Statham, David Ayer, A Working Man, trailer

Davis Ayer’s A Working Man trailer knows what the people want! The footage shows Statham doing what he does best with frenetic fisticuffs, tough guy one-liners, despicable villains, explosions, inventive weaponry, and a sense of urgency to the mission. Statham is one of Hollywood’s top action stars of modern times, with charisma and genuine martial arts skills to match. A Working Man brings intense action to theaters on March 28.

What do you think of David Ayer’s A Working Man trailer? Are you a fan of The Beekeeper? If A Working Man is half as good as The Beekeeper, we’ll eat well this March.

I look forward to watching Jason Statham bring the hammer down on a group of human traffickers. How about you? Let us know in the comments section below.
