Tron: Ares, Jared Leto

After a successful debut at CinemaCon, the first teaser trailer for Tron: Ares was released over the weekend, giving us our first taste of the Grid in fifteen years. The sequel follows a highly sophisticated program, Ares, who is sent from the digital world into the real world on a dangerous mission, marking humankind’s first encounter with A.I. beings. Jared Leto plays Ares, and director Joachim Rønning spilled a few details about the character while speaking with Empire.

Not to be too clichéd, but I always thought about him a bit like Pinocchio,” Rønning said. “Ares wants to be a real boy. We talked a lot about him almost being an infant, discovering the world for the first time, and how we wanted the audience to see the world through his eyes. The little things that we take for granted, or don’t see anymore. That was important. And then a bigger theme for the film is what it takes — what it means — to be human. Especially in this case, because he’s a computer program.

As seen in the teaser trailer and poster, Ares is a little different from programs we’ve seen in prior movies. His Identity Disc even gets an upgrade, moving from a circular shape to a triangular one. “It’s definitely a weapon,” Rønning said. “And it’s just a superior disc.” The director added that the regular discs will still be present. “When you’re a part of a franchise, you want to evolve the design, although I’m sure people are gonna freak out that it’s not round: ‘Oh no!’ But we have round discs as well,” he explained. “Take it easy.

Even before the release of Tron: Legacy, a third Tron movie was in the early stages of development. Disney even greenlit the project with Joseph Kosinski back in the director’s chair and Garret Hedlund and Olivia Wilde returning, but the studio pulled the plug just a few months before production was set to begin. After a few more years of hibernation, the project was rebooted with Leto set to star. Given the history, I honestly didn’t think this one would cross the finish line, but I’m more than ready to return to the Grid.

In addition to Leto, Tron: Ares stars Evan Peters, Greta Lee, Jodie Turner-Smith, Gillian Anderso, Cameron Monaghan, Sarah Desjardins, Hasan Minhaj, and Arturo Castro. Jeff Bridges also returns as Kevin Flynn. The film will hit theaters on October 10th. It’s also been rumoured that Tron: Legacy will finally make the leap to 4K Ultra HD this year, likely to coincide with the release of Tron: Ares. Fingers crossed.

One of the most exciting moments – for me anyway – at this year’s CinemaCon was when we got to see some early footage from Tron: Ares. What made the moment especially memorable was that star Jared Leto used the occasion to pay tribute to his co-star, Jeff Bridges (Flynn himself!), who, in turn, seemed psyched by the fact that the movie was being scored by none other than Nine Inch Nails. The footage was very well received, and now Disney has opted to release the CinemaCon trailer online. Check it out embedded above.

As per the official synopsis, TRON: Ares” follows a highly sophisticated program, Ares, who is sent from the digital world into the real world on a dangerous mission, marking humankind’s first encounter with A.I. beings.”

It’s always interesting to see Disney try to relaunch the Tron saga, as the series has always been incredibly formative and influential, even if the box office receipts have never quite matched up to its cultural significance. Tron, which came out in 1982, was the first movie to use extensive CGI but it proved to be a commercial disappointment. The sequel, Tron: Legacy, had a lot more hype when it came out in 2010, but while it just about broke even, it also wasn’t the blockbuster the studio had been hoping for.

Nonetheless, Disney is taking another kick at the can with Tron: Ares, which benefits from two things. One, CGI animation has taken a huge leap forward in the fifteen years since this last film, and two, the movie’s AI themes are a lot more relevant (and scary) now than they were when the last two films came out. Maybe this is the first Tron movie that will connect in a big way.

Tron: Ares comes out on October 10th. The film is directed by Kon-Tiki’s Joachim Rønning and stars Jared Leto, Greta Lee, Evan Peters, Gillian Anderson and Jeff Bridges!

Check out the trailer, along with the official poster below, and let us know how you think Tron: Ares looks!

Walt Disney Studios is taking over the main stage at CinemaCon 2025, and things are getting freaky! The highly anticipated panel included a presentation for Freakier Friday, the sequel to Disney’s 2003 comedy smash starring Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis! Before CinemaCon, Disney unveiled an adorable teaser trailer for the upcoming bodyswap tale, and now the con crowd is learning more details.

Lohan and Curtis took the CinemaCon stage to introduce the film. They explained that instead of switching bodies with each other, their characters exchange places with Lohan’s kids, so Curtis gets to act like a teenager again. Chad Michael Murray returns, and the preview includes a funny scene of Lindsay aggressively flirting with him. Murray is actually into Curtis, which could cause some delicious drama among the group. Freakier Friday looks like a crowd-pleaser, and we’re excited to see more when the movie comes to theaters on August 8.

Next up for Disney’s CinemaCon presentation is Tron: Ares. The sequel follows a highly sophisticated program, Ares, who is sent from the digital world into the real world on a dangerous mission, marking humankind’s first encounter with A.I. beings. The film stars Jared Leto as Ares, as well as Evan Peters, Greta Lee, Jodie Turner-Smith, Gillian Anderson Cameron Monaghan, Sarah Desjardins, Hasan Minhaj, and Arturo Castro. Jeff Bridges also returns as Kevin Flynn.

Leto and Bridges took to the stage to introduce the film, with Bridges saying he was “proud to be back on the grid!” Leto added that he was “obsessed” with Tron as a kid. “The future felt like it was right around the corner, it had everything I wanted from a movie — action, adventure and spandex — it took me to a world that I never knew,” Leto said.

The teaser trailer kicks off with a light cycle chase in the real world. They split a police car in half and create havoc. Leto’s character says, “I’m looking for something. Something I do not understand.” The tagline reads, “World will collide,” as Bridges’ character says, “Ready? Because there’s no going back.” The soundtracked by Nine Inch Nails plays over the logo. Our own Chris Bumbray says Greta Lee seems to be playing the human protagonist, while Evan Peters is playing a member of the Dillinger family that has proven to be a thorn in Flynn’s side since the first movie. The late David Warner played Ed Dillinger in the original Tron, while Cillian Murphy made a small appearance as Ed Dillinger Jr. in Tron: Legacy. The film will hit theaters on October 10th.

Jeremy Allen White introduced the first teaser trailer for Deliver Me From Nowhere, the upcoming Bruce Springsteen biopic. Bumbray says that White doesn’t appear to be doing a strict Springsteen impression and seems to be doing his own singing for some songs. The trailer includes black-and-white flashbacks to his abusive childhood (with his father played by Stephen Graham) and concludes with White belting out Born to Run.

It was incredible, challenging, and a dream come true,” White said. “I feel really lucky. We all had Bruce’s blessing. The film tells the story of a very pivotal moment, Bruce struggling to reconcile the pressures of success versus his past.

Jamie Lee Curtis returned to the stage with Emma Mackey in tow to introduce Ella McKay, the first new movie from James L. Brooks in 15 years. Mackey plays a rising politician, while Curtis plays her aunt. Woody Harrelson plays Ella’s estranged father, who she hates because he walked out on them and dated a bunch of her friends. She unexpectedly becomes governor when her mentor, played by Albert Brooks, names her as his successor. As her professional life takes off, her personal life starts to fall apart. Bumbray says it looks like the Broadcast News of politics.

A teaser for Jay Roach’s The Roses was also screened. The film, which is a reimagining of The War of the Roses, stars Benedict Cumberbatch and Olivia Colman. “Life seems easy for picture-perfect couple Ivy (Colman) and Theo (Cumberbatch): successful careers, a loving marriage, great kids,” reads the official description. “But beneath the façade of their supposed ideal life, a storm is brewing – as Theo’s career nosedives while Ivy’s own ambitions take off, a tinderbox of fierce competition and hidden resentment ignites.” Unfortunately, Bumbray wasn’t impressed, saying it looks like a “significantly lighter” and “cute” take on the original movie. He doubts it will have the same shocking ending.

We also caught a glimpse at Zootopia 2. The sequel introduces Gary (Ke Huy Quan), the first snake in Zootopia whose arrival freaks everyone out. Nick (Jason Bateman) and Judy (Ginnifer Goodwin) are assigned to track Gary down, but they’re not getting along. The clip finds the two in therapy, which is led by Dr. Fuzzbee (Quinta Brunson). One of the other pairs of animals in the group is an elephant and a mouse. Another scene finds Nick and Judy investigating a trashy waterfront in search of Gary, which Bumbray said led to some pretty funny bits. The sequel is slated to hit theaters on November 26th.

2025 Movie Preview

With 2024 coming to a close, it’s time to start looking to the future for our cinema needs. What does the year hold in store for us cinephiles? While 2024 held some surprise hits, giant blockbusters, and small films that could, it’s looking like 2025 movie releases will hold more of the same. We can hope that the good fortune that Hollywood has brought us will continue into the new year and keep theater attendance up. Here’s our 2025 Movie Preview:

Den of Thieves: Pantera

Den Of Thieves: Pantera – January 10

Gerard Butler is back chasing down diamond thieves on the streets of Europe. He stumbles across the planning of the largest diamond heist ever planned. If you liked the first movie, then this will probably be more of the same. I’m personally happy that Gerard Butler is making some fun B-movie action films like back in the day. Plane was fun, and I’m excited to see these types of films at the theater again.

better man

Better Man – January 10

A biopic about UK pop star Robbie Williams as we see his childhood all the way through his superstardom. Robbie will be playing himself, but how do you do that without it being weird? What if you make it so he’s a chimp? Sure. With Pharrell releasing his biopic as a Lego movie and now Robbie Williams replacing himself with a CGI chimp it seems biopics are really trying to gain quirk appeal.

Back in Action, release, Netflix, Jamie Foxx, Cameron Diax, first-look images

Back In Action – January 17

Cameron Diaz is coming out of retirement and teaming up with Jamie Foxx for this Netflix original film. They play former CIA agents who are pulled back in when their identities are exposed. While I’m glad to see Diaz back on screen after a decade away, it’s odd that this generic spy action movie did it. Maybe just the idea of being in a movie with Jamie Foxx again was enough.

Michelle Yeoh, Star Trek: Section 31, first look

Star Trek: Section 31 – January 24

This direct to Paramount+ film is a spin off from Star Trek: Discovery starring Michelle Yeoh as her character Philippa Georgiou. This was originally planned as a series, but after COVID-19 delays, it was scrapped. Later they revived the idea for an original movie. Star Trek has always been a beloved franchise but with new movies going direct to streaming, will we ever see them return to the big screen?

bridget jones, isla fisher, jim broadbent, nico parker

Bridget Jones: Mad About The Boy – February 13

For the first time in nine years, Bridget Jones is back! Only this time, it will be on Peacock in the United States and then in theaters everywhere else in the world. Seems backwards but okay. Bridget Jones is now a single mom and trying to figure out how that works when you’re trying to get back into the dating pool. Renee Zellweger and Hugh Grant return, along with some other familiar faces. Are we past the Bridget Jones fandom, or is there still more life in this franchise?

Captain America: Brave New World, Red Hulk

Captain America: Brave New World – February 14

After the events of Falcon And The Winter Soldier, Anthony Mackie is donning the shield as the new Captain America. Harrison Ford steps in for the late William Hurt as the new President Ross, who has a big red secret to share. Marvel only had one release last summer, and it seemed to work really well for them. Let’s see if something without Hugh Jackman’s claws still registers for Marvel fans.

2025 Movie Preview

Mickey 17 – March 7

The new film from Bong Joon-ho sees Robert Pattinson sent on a space mission because he is seen as expendable. With technology, he can be regenerated if something goes wrong. This time, something goes wrong, and he begins to experience an existential crisis. This darkly comedic film looks like a good time as we see Mickey die in numerous different ways and still have to get up to go to work the next day.

black bag

Black Bag – March 14

Steven Soderberg’s spy thriller is coming out with no details on the plot. With a cast that includes Michael Fassbender, Cate Blanchett, and Pierce Brosnan, you can bet lots of people will be interested in checking it out. Soderberg has always had an interesting take on just about any film he releases, and this will be no different.

Snow White

Snow White – March 21

Disney continues its trend of doing live-action remakes of its old animated films. This one caused a stir when it was announced, as people seemed divided on how to handle the seven dwarfs aspect of the film. Ultimately, the dwarves will be completely CGI. It will be interesting to see how this plays in a modern culture. Expect some new songs, and Gal Gadot will be playing the evil queen, which is inspired casting compared to the look of the original character.

2025 Movie Preview

A Minecraft Movie – April 4

With Super Mario Bros. and the Sonic movies being big hits, it’s no surprise that the hugely popular game Minecraft would be getting its own movie. Jack Black once again jumps on board to play Steve, the generic character most players take control of when booting up Minecraft. Jason Mamoa, Jennifer Coolidge, and Kate McKinnon round out the cast as random characters are pulled into the cubic world and need the help of an expert crafter to get home. Seems very Jumanji.

The Accountant 2, release date

The Accountant 2 – April 25

I don’t think anyone saw this sequel coming. In the first film, Ben Affleck played a neuro-divergent accountant who had a side job as a hitman. The film was a modest hit but nothing that would seem to warrant a sequel. Some other familiar faces from the first one return.

Thunderbolts*

Thunderbolts* – May 2

The second of Marvel’s offerings this year sees a bunch of cast-off characters from previous Marvel films being rounded up for a new agency. Yelena will be leading the team of previous supervillains who are now taking jobs for the government. Of course, this will be complicated by a lot of in-fighting and some unexpected speedbumps. The trailer makes this look like a lot of fun so here’s hoping it will give MCU fans some laughs while providing some great action scenes.

2025 Movie Preview

Lilo & Stitch – May 23

This is the second of Disney’s live-action remakes. Stitch crash-lands on Earth and is adopted by a young girl. Hijinks ensue as others come looking for him. The original had a great sense of humor, and the trailers showing Stitch invading other Disney properties were great. I have no idea if this will translate well into live-action, but kids will probably love it.

mission impossible

Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning – May 23

This was originally titled Dead Reckoning Part II, but after the last film underperformed, the title was quickly changed. It will continue the storyline from the last film, and we see Ethan Hunt trying to stop the deadly AI from causing worldwide chaos. Of course in order to shut it down, they have to make their way to the submarine that is crashed on the ocean floor.

Karate Kid: Legends

Karate Kid: Legends – May 30

The franchise returns to the big screen as we see Daniel from the original and Mr. Han from the 2010 “remake” join forces to mentor a new student. It’s a strange crossing of the streams which retcons the remake into being set in the same continuity. With Cobra Kai just ending when this hits theaters, will fans even care enough to go check it out? Fans of the original movie got their nostalgia fix with the series. Are there people who have nostalgia for the 2010 movie?

Ballerina

From The World Of John Wick: Ballerina – June 6

The spin-off of the John Wick films hits the big screen. We were introduced to the Ballerinas in John Wick 3. Now they get a film all their own while Keanu Reeves will still make an appearance since this is set during that time period. Ana de Armas takes over the role of Eve as she looks to get revenge on the people who killed her family. The intricate world of John Wick is fascinating to explore, and this gives us a chance to see even more of it.

2025 Movie Preview

Elio – June 13

An animated film from Disney that follows Elio. He’s a young space fanatic who gets tasked with saving the universe. They have been struggling to come up with animated films that really stick with audiences that aren’t already established Pixar properties. The shine of the early Pixar films has really dimmed after Disney bought them. Hopefully we can see Disney regain its footing with animated films like we used to have.

How to Train Your Dragon

How To Train Your Dragon – June 13

Dreamworks seems to be taking a cue from Disney and remaking some of their more popular animated properties. We’re getting another round of dragons as we see the first meeting of Hiccup and Toothless. Again. Not sure if this trend will ever end, but at least Dreamworks doesn’t have as deep of a catalog as Disney. When can we expect to see a live-action Kung Fu Panda?

Jurassic World Rebirth, Jurassic Park

Jurassic World: Rebirth – July 2

Scarlett Johanssen is taking the lead role this time around. No one seems to have learned any lesson about bringing dinosaurs back to life. This time it looks like explorers have to go in to get DNA samples from some prehistoric animals to help cure a disease. Universal really just wants to see if there is any juice left to squeeze out of this fruit. It may be time to let it sleep for a few decades before heading back in.

Superman

Superman – July 11

James Gunn takes his stab at the Man of Steel as the DC Universe reboots itself on-screen once again. Reports are that Gunn held an early screening for WB execs and that it did not go well. That could be internet fodder, but it doesn’t instill a lot of hope for the new version of the DCU. With the DC shows on the CW just wrapping up, we’ll have to see if Gunn’s Superman will connect with comic fans. The recent trailer seemed to gain a lot of views very quickly, so we at least know that fans are interested.

The Smurfs

The Smurfs Movie – July 18

Those magical little blue creatures will grace theater screens once again. This time, the film will be fully animated and musical. Paramount/Nickelodeon will take on the film, and it seems to be inspired by the popularity of the Troll movies. Rhianna will voice Smurfette and be joined by Nick Offerman, John Goodman, Kurt Russell, Dan Levy, and Hannah Waddingham.

fantastic four first steps

The Fantastic Four: First Steps – July 25

Marvel’s first family finally makes their way into the MCU. While they have been on-screen before as part of Fox’s Marvel movies, this time, we’ll see what the MCU has in store for the group. Marvel’s third film in six months will really test if audiences are in superhero fatigue or not. The early footage shown at Comicon seems fun, so hopefully, it will bring something new.

Liam Neeson, The Naked Gun remake

Naked Gun – August 1

Liam Neeson is hoping to try something drastically different than we’ve seen from him before. He has some big shoes to fill, as Leslie Nielsen based the whole second half of his career on the original Naked Gun. It will be hard to see anyone else trying to play that role. Plus, does that type of comedy have a place anymore?

Freakier Friday

Freakier Friday – August 8

Disney’s calendar of releases this year is crazy, as we see the reteaming of Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan. The last film was a remake of an old Disney Classic. Now, twenty-one years later, we are getting a sequel. Expect more body-swapping jokes as the Lindsay Lohan resurgence seems to be taking shape. She’s been on an upswing lately, and hopefully, we can see her get a victory lap as she has matured.

Nobody

Nobody 2 – August 15

Somehow, Bob Odenkirk became an action star after starring in Nobody back in 2021. Now, we get to see some more middle-aged dad action as he returns for this sequel. The first movie really worked to show what appears to be an ordinary man who decides to get back into a life he left a long time ago. Now that we have seen him for what he really is, here’s hoping for more action and more Christopher Lloyd running around with a shotgun.

Downton Abbey a new era review

Downton Abbey 3 – September 12

The third film spin-off of the popular period drama. Many of the cast return to once again play their characters, showing the divide between the upper class and the working class. This drama captivated audiences when it first premiered, and both previous films have been big hits. It only makes sense to keep it going with another film.

Tron Ares

Tron: Ares – October 10

We’re traveling back into the world of Tron. Jeff Bridges is back, along with a slew of other familiar faces like Jodie Turner-Smith, Evan Peters, and Jared Leto. This time, a program is sent from the digital world to the real world. Each Tron film so far has pushed the boundaries in terms of special effects and technical marvels. Let’s see what they come up with this time.

Mortal Kombat

Mortal Kombat 2 – October 24

We’re heading back to the arcade, so get your quarters ready. The reboot of the Mortal Kombat franchise continues as our heroes are heading back to Outland to continue the fight for all existence. The last film was released during the pandemic, so a true gauge of the popularity is hard to judge, but audiences seem to have a positive response. During the initial film franchise run, the second entry pushed it off a cliff. We can hope they learned their lesson.

Now You See Me 3, release

Now You See Me 3 – November 14

Another entry into the magic mystery franchise is in the pipeline. All of our sleight-of-hand artists are returning, but no plot has been released so far. The previous movies have gained an audience through their unique use of stage magic and illusions to foil their adversaries. It is a fun and interesting way of doing a mystery based action film. If it lives up to the previous entries, then audiences should leave the theater happy.

Wicked: Part Two, Wicked: For Good

Wicked: For Good – November 21

The second part of the recent smash hit. Those who haven’t seen the Broadway play or read the book will get to see how the story ends. I expect more fantastic songs, some great visuals, and more Oz. We all need all the Oz we can get. Let’s all get ready to defy gravity once again.

2025 Movie Preview

Zootopia 2 – November 26

Disney has quite the release schedule this year, and we’re not even done yet. Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde are teaming up to solve a wild case that could change their entire lives. It will be fun to travel back into the world of Zootopia and see where the characters are. It looks like more of the same fun we had in the last film.

Zoe Saldaña, Avatar: Fire and Ash

Avatar: Fire And Ash – December 19

It’s time to head back to Pandora. Last time James Cameron dealt with water motifs and explored more of the world. Looks like we’ll be dealing with fire this time around. While the films seem to always be a wonder of motion capture and CGI, it would be great to see Cameron go back to other projects before his film career comes to an end. We can always hope.

Spongebob Squarepants

The SpongeBob Movie: Search For SquarePants – December 19

Hey Kids! SpongeBob is back with another movie. This time, he will explore the depths of the ocean to deal with the ghost of the Flying Dutchman. This franchise just keeps engaging generation after generation. At this point, The Simpsons might be about the only animated franchise that has lasted longer. As long as fans keep checking out the movies, the more they will keep making.

Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross have successfully transitioned from the music world to the movie world thanks to their collaborations with David Fincher and other notable filmmakers. With Ross, Reznor first won the Best Original Score Oscar for The Social Network, next nabbing it for Soul (alongside Jon Baptiste). However, they would lose out on their Mank nomination. In addition to other works for David Fincher, like The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and Gone Girl, Reznor and Ross also recently did the music for Luca Guadagnino’s Bones and All, Challengers and, more recently, Queer

The Nine Inch Nails members are also tapped to score the upcoming Tron: Ares, and The Hollywood Reporter is revealing that the duo is quite comfortable staying in the film game in lieu of returning to purely music. Reznor would tell IndieWire, “What we’re looking for [from film] is the collaborative experience with interesting people. We haven’t gotten that from the music world necessarily, for our own choice.” Reznor went on to say,

The culture of the music world sucks.”

He would then elaborate, “That’s another conversation, but what technology has done to disrupt the music business in terms of not only how people listen to music but the value they place on it is defeating. I’m not saying that as an old man yelling at clouds, but as a music lover who grew up where music was the main thing. Music [now] feels largely relegated to something that happens in the background or while you’re doing something else. That’s a long, bitter story.”

The former Nine Inch Nails artist would explain that he and Ross found success in film soundtracks because they are “working in service to something, where we’re not in control of the whole thing, and we’re working intimately with a director or small team to try and help realize a collective vision, solving that riddle without the burden of ‘how’s it going to be marketed?’ and all the things.”

Samples of the upcoming Nine Inch Nails score for Tron: Ares were featured at this year’s D23 event, which our own Alex Maidy was in attendance for and has been giving us all the updates you need.

As for Tron: Ares itself — which wrapped filming in May — we know that it “follows a highly sophisticated Program, Ares, who is sent from the digital world into the real world on a dangerous mission, marking humankind’s first encounter with A.I. beings.” It is currently slated for release on October 10th, 2025.

Put your quarter on the cabinet and stake your claim as ‘Next,’ as Tron: Ares is on the way. Does anyone reading this even understand that reference anymore? After a long delay, we are finally getting a new film in the franchise. The road was rough to finally get back on track, but soon, we’ll be back in the virtual world wishing we had a light bike. Here is everything we know about Tron: Ares, which is directed by Joachim Rønning.

Tron Ares

Who Is In It?

Recently, the news that Jeff Bridges would be returning to the franchise made the series’ fans rejoice. Even before he came back to the project, the cast list was filled with notable faces and big names. The film is hoping to bring in new fans as well as fans of the other two films. First up is the obvious one:

Jeff Bridges

With the addition of Bridges to the cast, he becomes the only legacy member (so far) of the original films. Interesting, though, as they haven’t said who he is playing. Many seem to assume he’ll be back as his character from the original film, Kevin Flynn. On IMDB and in reports on his joining the cast, there is no listing that he’s coming back as Flynn. Could we see the return of his evil alter ego from Tron: Legacy Clu? Probably not, but it’s fun to speculate.

Jared Leto

Everyone’s favorite meme vampire, Morbius, is taking center stage for this film. He will play the title character of Ares. With his sometimes ethereal performances in films like Blade Runner: 2049, this seems like a good role for him, as he will embody an AI being sent into the real world. I’m curious to see how he will play the character and what his POV will be like as he experiences the real world for the first time.

Gillian Anderson

Everyone’s favorite red-headed FBI Agent, Gillian Anderson, joined the cast, but there has been no word on what her role will be in the film. Could she be the creator of Ares? Makes sense. We saw her as the god of Media in American Gods so she’s used to living in a virtual world inside of a screen already.

tron ares cast

Others

Other notable names, including Greta Lee, Evan Peters, Hasan Minhaj, Jodie Turner-Smith, Arturo Castro, Cameron Monaghan, and Sarah Desjardins round out the already stellar cast. With a cast like this, this film is the must-watch film of Fall 2025. With this much talent on screen and behind the camera, hopefully, we can expect a great film. Although a great cast doesn’t always mean a great film. With the production team from Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales and Maleficent: Mistress Of Evil involved, they are at least experienced with making high-budget films with a lot of post-production work.

What Took So Long?

A follow-up to Steven Lisberger’s 1982 classic Tron, Tron: Legacy came out in 2010 and was pretty profitable for a sequel to an 80s film. Why did it take so long to get another film? A lot happened between then and now. The same creative team began work on a sequel just after release. As things went on, it was confirmed that some of the cast members, like Bruce Boxleitner, Olivia Wilde, and Garrett Hedlund, would be returning.

In March 2015, the sequel was officially announced, but by May, it was canceled. The reason seemed to be the underperformance of Tommorowland. Executives at Disney said there were still discussions happening about the future of the Tron franchise but nothing seemed to materialize for a sequel. During a 2017 Q&A, Tron: Legacy director Joseph Kosinski stated that he believed the purchase of Marvel and Lucasfilm by Disney took up most of the company’s attention.

With major franchises that were guaranteed money-makers, Disney seemed less interested in taking on other films that were riskier investments. If they could make a billion dollars on a new Star Wars film or an Avengers movie, why would they spend $200 million dollars on something that could very well break even? The sequel was officially dead.

Instead, it was later decided to reboot the franchise. Rather than follow up on the previous film, they would tell an all-new story set in the established universe of Tron without having to worry about keeping the story going from the previous films. Just as Tron: Ares was moving forward to film in the summer of 2023, it was delayed once again by the writer and actor strikes. It finally began production on January 1st, 2024, and wrapped on May 1st.

While Daft Punk provided the score for Tron: Legacy, the score from this one is being composed by Nine Inch Nails.

What’s It About?

Good question. While a little bit of the story has been revealed, not much is known about the full film. What we do know indicates that this film will flip the typical formula of Tron films. Instead of someone getting pulled into the virtual world (as far as we know), an AI character will make their way into the real world. I’m sure we’ll spend time in both settings, but this change could be a welcome one for viewers.

We’ve seen characters interacting with the virtual world through two movies, and let’s be real. Most of us seem to interact more with the virtual world than the real world every day. With the discussion of AI being at the forefront of everyone’s mind lately, this is the perfect time to use this subject for the Tron films. It’s already a built-in part of the series showing how the over-reliance on computer technology can lead to bad things. We might as well try it again with AI in the real world.

Scripted by Jesse Wigutow and Jack Thorne, Tron: Ares is said to tell the story of a highly sophisticated Program, Ares, who is sent from the digital world into the real world on a dangerous mission, marking humankind’s first encounter with A.I. beings.

When Can We See It?

Well, the film just wrapped on May 1st, so if you’re hoping to rush out to see it before the summer ends, then you’re in for some disappointment. You’ve still got a long wait ahead of you. At the moment, you won’t be able to see it until October 10, 2025. As with anything, release dates can change. It could end up being pushed back or, in the rare case, pushed forward. Are you excited to see Tron: Ares? Let us know in the comments.

Here are a couple of images from the film:

Tron: Ares

Tron: Ares director Joachim Rønning recently commemorated the wrapping of filming earlier this summer with some behind-the-scenes images and stating, “That’s a wrap on TRON: ARES. Thanks to an incredible and tireless crew, I really believe we pushed the filmmaking limits on this movie. Even through six weeks of night shoots you never slowed down. Also, a big thank you to our wonderful cast for leaving everything on screen. I can’t wait to show the world what we’ve done.” It was also revealed that Nine Inch Nails is scoring the film in place of the last film’s composers, Daft Punk.

Empire has recently shared a new picture from the upcoming Tron: Ares that teases more of Jared Leto’s character — the titular Ares. Additionally, Rønning has also explained more about his intended heavier score with Nine Inch Nails, saying, “With Nine Inch Nails making the music, this installment will be a little grittier, a little bit more industrial. It’s been important for me to contrast The Grid and the real world. In that sense, Nine Inch Nails lends itself perfectly into this new Tron world that we are creating.”

Tron: Ares

He also explains that the darker tone of the music will not necessarily mean the tone of this entry will be more melancholy, but there will also be some heart and human spirit emanating from the soundtrack. Rønning expounded, “What I always look for in any story is a strong emotional core. This film will probably be more emotional than people are expecting. It’s about the cost of being human.”

Tron: Ares “follows a highly sophisticated Program, Ares, who is sent from the digital world into the real world on a dangerous mission, marking humankind’s first encounter with A.I. beings.” The film stars Jared Leto, Greta Lee, Evan Peters, Hasan Minhaj, Jodie Turner-Smith, Arturo Castro, Cameron Monaghan, and Gillian Anderson.

To the delight of Tron fans, it was confirmed that Jeff Bridges will also return. “I’m heading off this Saturday to play a part in the third installment of the Tron story,” Bridges said. “I’m excited about that. It’s wild. Jared Leto is the star of this third one, and I’m really anxious to work with him, and I’ve admired his work.” He also spoke about the visual effects of the last Tron movie, which found him digitally de-aged in a way that didn’t always work. “[I’m really excited] to see what the technology is going to be all about [this time],” he said. “When I did Tron: Legacy, we had to put all these dots on our face and all these kinds of things. And that’s [probably] all passé. I had to see myself as a young guy or as another character, but the same guy, but it was gonna be digitally created. I think it was [de-aging], but I didn’t like the way I looked in it; I felt like I looked more like Bill Maher than myself; it was kind of bizarre [laughs]. I’m anxious to see what the technology and what it will be. I hear there’s even less A.I. stuff in this. It’s going to be more a practical set, and they’re beautiful; there are beautiful sets that I’ve seen.“

Tron: Ares is set to hit theaters on October 10, 2025.

Coming a full 15 years after Tron: Legacy, next year’s Ares stands as one of the most anticipated movies of 2025. We still have well over a year before it hits the big screen, but Jared Leto is already hype for the Tron sequel, taking to Disneyland to ride the Tron Lightcycle / Run.

In a new Instagram post, Leto – who at the time was in Florida for a couple of stops on 30 Seconds to Mars’ Seasons Tour – is seen approaching the Tron ride and declaring, “We gotta go, we gotta do this, man. Holy sh*t! I feel like I’m home!” He also insisted on being on the front cycle, something fans of the ride say is well worth the wait. Judging by the clip, Leto had a pretty damn good time, although some followers did rib him for not taking his grip off the handlebars.

If you, unlike Jared Leto, have yet to ride Tron Lightcycle / Run, Disney has the following synopsis: “Climb aboard your very own Lightcycle and take off on a high-speed adventure, racing against the Grid’s most menacing Programs. Surge past your fierce opponents as you attempt to cross through 8 Energy Gates and secure your team’s victory.”

Jared Leto is one of many new cast members for Tron: Ares, with Greta Lee, Evan Peters, Hasan Minhaj, Jodie Turner-Smith, Gillian Anderson, and more joining for the sequel. Leto plays the movie’s title character, “who is sent from the digital world into the real world on a dangerous mission, marking humankind’s first encounter with A.I. beings.” Leto also serves as a producer, although apparently didn’t pitch hard enough to have Thirty Seconds to Mars score Tron: Ares, as Nine Inch Nails will take on composer duties.

2010’s Tron: Legacy took in $400 million worldwide, proving to be one of the biggest hits of the year.

The first iteration of the Tron Lightcycle ride opened in Shanghai Disneyland back in 2016, while the Magic Kingdom version debuted just last year.

Move over, Daft Punk, because Nine Inch Nails is moving closer to the future of the Tron series, with the industrial band landing scoring duties for the upcoming Tron: Ares

Even though a lot of their music (the Ghosts albums come to mind) can often play like a soundtrack, Nine Inch Nails has done very little work in that realm, having previously only done the music for video game Quake. With Tron: Ares, Nine Inch Nails will finally give us an idea of all that could have ever been.

Even still, Trent Reznor — who was the sole member of Nine Inch Nails since its inception in 1988 until Atticus Ross officially joined in 2004 — has made an incredibly successful transition from the music studio to the movie studio. With Ross, Reznor first won the Best Original Score Oscar for The Social Network, next nabbing it for Soul (alongside Jon Baptiste). They would lose out on their Mank nomination, but hey, having as many wins as Henry Mancini is definitely a bragging right. Keep in mind that even though Reznor and Ross are the only members of Nine Inch Nails (excluding touring members), they have previously only been credited on the big screen with their actual names. In addition to other works for David Fincher like The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and Gone Girl, Reznor and Ross also recently did the music for Luca Guadagnino’s Bones and All and Challengers. And who can forget being the oddball choices forTeenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem?!

Samples of the upcoming Nine Inch Nails score for Tron: Ares were featured at this week’s D23 event, which our own Alex Maidy was in attendance for and has been giving us all the updates you need.

Tron: Ares, production wraps

I’ll admit I doubted a third Tron movie would ever happen, but I’m thankful to be proven wrong. After kicking off production at the start of the year, Tron: Ares has wrapped production and director Joachim Rønning has shared a handful of photos on Instagram.

That’s a wrap on TRON: ARES,” Rønning wrote. “Thanks to an incredible and tireless crew, I really believe we pushed the filmmaking limits on this movie. Even through six weeks of night shoots you never slowed down. Also, a big thank you to our wonderful cast for leaving everything on screen. Tron: Ares

UPDATE: Disney has shared an image of Jeff Bridges taking a look at the Tron: Ares script, and that can be seen at the bottom of this article.

The original article follows:

The long-awaited third entry in the Tron franchise is finally in production. Six years after it was first announced that Jared Leto was in talks to star in a Tron project called Tron: Ares, the movie was all set to start filming last August – but then it had to wait out the writers and actors strikes. With those strikes over, filming is finally underway. Earlier today, we heard a quote from cast member Cameron Monaghan (Gotham), who said this film will “really push forward what can be done, from a visual perspective.” Now, we have another quote about the movie – and this is the one that every Tron fan has been waiting to hear. A quote that confirms original Tron star Jeff Bridges is returning for Tron: Ares!

Bridges himself told the Film Comment podcast (with thanks to The Playlist for the transcription), “I’m heading off this Saturday to play a part in the third installment of the Tron story; I’m excited about that. It’s wild. Jared Leto is the star of this third one, and I’m really anxious to work with him, and I’ve admired his work.” The actor also took a moment to talk about the technology used to bring these films to the screen, and his de-aged appearance in the previous film, Tron: Legacy: “[I’m really excited] to see what the technology is going to be all about [this time]. When I did Tron: Legacy, we had to put all these dots on our face and all these kinds of things. It’s going to be more a practical set, and they’re beautiful; there are beautiful sets that I’ve seen.

Maleficent: Mistress of Evil and Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales director Joachim Rønning is at the helm of Tron: Ares. In addition to Bridges, Monaghan, and Jared Leto (Morbius), the film also stars Evan Peters (Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story), Greta Lee (Past Lives), Sarah Desjardins (Yellowjackets), Gillian Anderson (The X-Files), Hasan Minhaj (No Hard Feelings), Arturo Castro (Road House), and Jodie Turner-Smith (Queen & Slim). We’ve also heard a rumor that Cillian Murphy might be reprising his Tron: Legacy role to be the villain in this film.

Scripted by Jesse Wigutow and Jack Thorne, Tron: Ares is said to tell the story of a highly sophisticated Program, Ares, who is sent from the digital world into the real world on a dangerous mission, marking humankind’s first encounter with A.I. beings. Leto is playing Ares. As Deadline puts it, Ares is “a fictional character who crosses over from the world of videogames to planet Earth.”

For twenty-eight years, director Steven Lisberger’s cult classic Tron was a standalone sci-fi adventure. Then in 2010 Joseph Kosinski took fans back to the world of Tron with the film Tron: Legacy – and since then things have been a bit messy. Kosinski wanted to make a third Tron film, to be called Tron: Ascension, but Disney cancelled the project when their movie Tomorrowland underperformed. Apparently the script for Tron: Ascension would have featured a character named Ares… and somehow the idea for that character has evolved into Tron: Ares. Kosinski had said that he had nearly given Leto a cameo in Tron: Legacy, in the End of Line club where Lisberger did make a cameo.

Leto is producing Tron: Ares with Emma Ludbrook and Jeffrey Springer. Russell Allen serves as executive producer.

Are you looking forward to Tron: Ares, and are you glad to hear that Jeff Bridges is in the cast? Let us know by leaving a comment below.

Tron: Ares is scheduled to reach theatres on October 10, 2025.

1982’s Tron was a gigantic step forward in visual effects in cinema. The Disney film would take the growing popularity of arcades and capitalize on video games’ unique visual cues by integrating live-action elements with groundbreaking computer-generated effects. The result is being transported to a world unlike any that had been seen before. When 2010’s sequel Tron: Legacy was released, it had the opportunity to expand on the world with more advanced technology. It would also be a product of its time, utilizing both IMAX format and being presented in 3D when the movie journeyed into The Grid.

Cameron Monaghan, who will be starring in the upcoming Tron: Ares with Jared Leto, has recently teased how the new installment will also push forward with visual effects. According to Deadline, Monaghan recently gave an interview with the site, Collider, where he stated, “I think this one, in a very similar way, is going to really push forward what can be done, from a visual perspective. I would sometimes even come in on days I wasn’t working, because that set was really amazing. A lot of the practical sets were pretty phenomenal, and I would love to go look at those as well.”

The Shameless actor also recalled when he first saw the original Jeff Bridges movie while traveling on a flight, “I remember watching the original, and I thought it was from the ’90s or something, because it was pretty amazing how a movie from that era could look that amazing, and utilizing computers the way they did.” Monaghan would also have the opportunity to attend Tron: Legacy‘s premiere and was intrigued on how it had grown “a cult fandom, in a similar way that the original Tron did as well, where people thought it was very technologically cool but it’s continued to grow.”

He also added that he had the chance to view Tron: Legacy recently in a special non-digital film screening, Tron Legacy, I just saw projected in 35MM at the New Beverly last year, and it really holds up, and has that amazing soundtrack by Daft Punk. So I like that those movies have a number of years of separation between them. They don’t come out very often, and every time they do, they show a new era of technology and filmmaking.”

Tron: Ares

Welcome back to the Grid, user. Disney is finally following up their cult franchise with a new entry, Tron: Ares. While the new installment in the series does not seemingly feature the Flynn family, at least for now, their legacy will be put into further question as a sophisticated program escapes from the game and ventures into our world. Jared Leto, who had a big swing and a miss with his last franchise attempt, Morbius, is heading up the cast for this continuation. Disney recently unveiled details of Tron: Ares‘ release at last week’s CinemaCon.

CBR.com has reported on an on-set video taken during a night shoot on the production. The video was posted to social media and seems to show a scene that takes place in a city street with cars stalled in the middle of the road. Jared Leto is seen in full view in his character’s costume. Leto is seen with visible face injuries as he walks by his trailer which imply the scene takes place around an action sequence and his character will encounter real-world damages.

Tron: Ares “follows a highly sophisticated Program, Ares, who is sent from the digital world into the real world on a dangerous mission, marking humankind’s first encounter with A.I. beings.”

Tron: Ares is a follow-up to Disney’s 1982 seminal science fiction film Tron and the 2010 sequel, Tron: Legacy. Jared Leto leads the cast of Tron: Ares, with Greta Lee, Evan Peters, Hasan Minhaj, Jodie Turner-Smith, Arturo Castro, Cameron Monaghan, and Gillian Anderson filling out the primary cast. Tron: Ares is in Vancouver production and slated for a 2025 release. Joachim Rønning (Maleficent: Mistress of EvilKon-TikiPirates of Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales) directs from material written by Steven Lisberger, Bonnie MacBird, and Jack Thorne.

We first saw Tron: Ares in February when Disney shared a teaser image from the forthcoming sequel. Speaking about the forthcoming Tron film, Rønning said, “I’m excited to be part of the Tron franchise and bring this new film to fans around the world. Tron: Ares builds upon the legacy of cutting-edge design, technology and storytelling. Now more than ever, it feels like the right time to return to the Grid.”

What’s black and red and sinister all over? Our first look at a mysterious User in Disney’s next chapter of the TRON franchise, TRON: Ares. In the official first-look image from TRON: Ares, Rinzler gives us an over-the-shoulder stare while wearing a black suit lined with red trim. They’re holding a matching black Identity Disc in their right hand and ready to smoke the competition.

Sean Bailey, Jeffrey Silver, Justin Springer, Jared Leto, Emma Ludbrook, and Steven Lisberger are the producers, with Russell Allen serving as executive producer.

TRON: Ares was an unfortunate victim of the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes last year, causing the film’s production to be delayed. Speaking about the film’s status at the time, Rønning posted the following message to social media.

“Today was supposed to be our first day of principal photography on TRON: ARES (a movie subsequently about AI and what it means, and takes, to be human),” Rønning said in a straight-forward Instagram post in August. “Instead, we are shut down with over a hundred and fifty people laid off. It’s indefinite, which makes it exponentially harder for everyone…The AMPTP, SAG-AFTRA and WGA need to speed up the negotiating process and not leave the table until it’s done. This is Hollywood. We close deals for breakfast. Why do we suddenly have all the time in the world when every day is so precious? These tactics are extremely frustrating. It’s time for diplomacy so we can get back to work – under conditions that are fair to everybody #amptp #sagaftra #wga”. That Tron: Ares centers around artificial intelligence is quite interesting, considering the topic is a major point in negotiations for both unions.”

The long-awaited third entry in the Tron franchise is finally heading into production. Six years after it was first announced that Jared Leto was in talks to star in a Tron project called Tron: Ares, the movie was all set to start filming last August – but then it had to wait out the writers and actors strikes. With those strikes over, the production is ready to go now – and Deadline reports that The X-Files star Gillian Anderson has signed on to join the cast. Details on the character she’ll be playing have not been revealed.

Maleficent: Mistress of Evil and Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales director Joachim Rønning is at the helm of Tron: Ares. In addition to Leto and Anderson, the film also stars Evan Peters (Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story), Greta Lee (Past Lives), Cameron Monaghan (Gotham), Sarah Desjardins (Yellowjackets), and Jodie Turner-Smith (Queen & Slim). We’ve also heard a rumor that Cillian Murphy might be reprising his Tron: Legacy role to be the villain in this film.

Scripted by Jesse Wigutow and Jack Thorne, Tron: Ares is said to tell the story of the emergence of a sentient program that crosses over into the human world that is not ready for contact. Leto is playing Ares, “the manifestation of the program.” As Deadline puts it, Ares is “a fictional character who crosses over from the world of videogames to planet Earth.”

Tron: Ares, production

When the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes ended, someone opened the floodgates for news pouring out of Hollywood. In addition to giving actors the go-ahead to hype their latest projects, updates for existing films and television series continue to rain like men. According to Collider, production for the long-gestating Tron sequel, Tron: Ares, starts filming in Vancouver after the holidays. Initially, cameras were supposed to roll in August, but the strikes delayed the process by several months. The shutdown was harsh, with Tron: Ares director Joachim Rønning expressing his disappointment about over 150 people terminated from the production.

It’s time for diplomacy so we can get back to work – under conditions that are fair to everybody #amptp #sagaftra #wga”. That Tron: Ares centers around artificial intelligence is quite interesting, considering the topic is a major point in negotiations for both unions.”

You can check out Rønning’s IG post below:

Tron: Ares, a follow-up to 1982’s Tron and 2010’s Tron: Legacy, features Jared Leto (MorbiusThe House of Gucci), Evan Peters (WandaVisionDahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story), Jodie Turner-Smith (Without RemorseQueen & Slim), Cameron Monaghan (ShamelessGotham), and Sarah Desjardins (RiverdaleYellowjackets).

Thankfully, the strikes have resolved, and production can begin anew on Tron: Ares. The ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike, now in its second month, has claimed yet another victim, as Tron: Ares has officially been delayed the same week it was set to begin filming. Coming hot off the news, director Joachim Rønning has expressed his frustrations on social media, urging there to be a better “safety net” as SAG-AFTRA and WGA (whose own strike has exceeded 100 days so far) continue to be in a stalemate with the AMPTP, the group at the center of both strikes.

The delay of Tron: Ares will result not just in a calendar shakeup but the loss of jobs for around 150 crew members. As such, director Rønning has not minced words on his take. As per The Hollywood Reporter, “Today was supposed to be our first day of principal photography on TRON: ARES (a movie subsequently about AI and what it means, and takes, to be human). Instead, we are shut down with over a hundred and fifty people laid off. It’s indefinite, which makes it exponentially harder for everyone…The AMPTP, SAG-AFTRA and WGA need to speed up the negotiating process and not leave the table until it’s done. This is Hollywood. It’s time for diplomacy so we can get back to work – under conditions that are fair to everybody #amptp #sagaftra #wga”. That Tron: Ares centers around artificial intelligence is quite interesting, considering the topic is a major point in negotiations for both unions. You can read his full statement from Instagram below:

Tron: Ares is set to be the third movie in the Tron franchise following 1982’s original and 2010’s Tron: Legacy. It had been building its cast for some time – recently adding Cameron Monaghan (Shameless, Gotham) and Sarah Desjardins (Riverdale, Yellowjackets) to the already-cast Jared Leto, Evan Peters, Jodie Turner-Smith, and more – building as best as they could in the excitement, although fans would much rather see Jeff Bridges, Garrett Hedlund and Olivia Wilde in the cast. Most would probably want to see how Cillian Murphy could expand his Legacy cameo as well.

Do you share Joachim Rønning’s sentiments about Tron: Ares being delayed because of the strikes? Are you still looking forward to the threequel? Give us your thoughts in the comments section below.

Deadline reports that Cameron Monaghan will be entering the game grid as the actor has closed to deal to join the cast of Tron: Ares. The website also reports that Yellowjackets star Sarah Desjardins is also set to join the cast.

The upcoming Tron sequel is set to star Jared Leto as a sentient program that travels from the digital world to the human world. It’s not known who Cameron Monaghan will play in Tron: Ares, but he joins a cast which also includes Evan Peters (Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story), Greta Lee (Past Lives), and Jodie Turner-Smith (Queen & Slim).

Cameron Monaghan is best known for playing Liam Gallagher on Shameless as well as Jerome and Jeremiah Valeska on Gotham. He also provided the voice, likeness, and motion capture for Cal Kestis in the Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order video game and its recent sequel Star Wars Jedi: Survivor. Sarah Desjardins currently has a recurring role (as the daughter of Melanie Lynskey’s character) on Yellowjackets, and is one of the stars of the Netflix breakout The Night Agent.

Joachim Rønning (Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales) is set to direct Tron: Ares from a script by Jesse Wigutow and Jack Thorne. Production on the project is said to eyeing an August start, but of course that all depends on the status of the WGA strike and the impending SAG-AFTRA strike.

The road to another Tron movie has been a long one. Even before the release of Tron: Legacy, a third film was in the early stages of development. Disney greenlit the project with Tron: Legacy director Joseph Kosinski set to direct and Garret Hedlund and Olivia Wilde returning, but in 2015, they pulled the plug. Kosinski later suggested that Disney scrapped the sequel because of their new toys — Marvel and Star Wars. “When I made Tron: Legacy, they didn’t own Marvel; they didn’t own Star Wars,” Kosinski said. “We were the play for fantasy and science fiction. And once you’ve got those other things under your umbrella, it makes sense that you’re going to put your money into a known property and not the weird art student with black fingernails in the corner — that was Tron.

The long-awaited third entry in the Tron franchise is really picking up steam. Six years have gone by since it was first announced that Jared Leto was in talks to star in a Tron project called Tron: Ares, but things really started to come together around Leto earlier this year. First, Maleficent: Mistress of Evil and Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales director Joachim Rønning signed on to direct the film. A couple months ago, we heard a rumor that Cillian Murphy might be reprising his Tron: Legacy role to be the villain in this film. Earlier this week, Evan Peters of Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story joined Leto in the cast. Now The Hollywood Reporter has broken the news that Greta Lee (Past Lives) will be playing “a leading role” in the film, while Variety reports that Jodie Turner-Smith (Queen & Slim) has also been cast.

Tron: Ares is expected to start filming in August… but that will only be possible if the Screen Actors Guild strike doesn’t happen.

Scripted by Jesse Wigutow and Jack Thorne, Tron: Ares is said to tell the story of the emergence of a sentient program that crosses over into the human world that is not ready for contact. Leto is playing Ares, “the manifestation of the program.”

For twenty-eight years, director Steven Lisberger’s cult classic Tron was a standalone sci-fi adventure. According to scooper Daniel Richtman via his Patreon, Cillian Murphy is set to reprise his Tron: Legacy role in the upcoming Tron: Ares as the villain. You should consider this to be a rumor for the time being, but Richtman does have a pretty good track record with these scoops.

If it’s been a while since you last watched Tron: Legacy, you might not even remember that Cillian Murphy was in it. He played Edward Dillinger Jr., the head of ENCOM’s software design team and the son of former ENCOM senior executive Ed Dillinger, the character played by David Warner in the original Tron. The role was more of a cameo, but felt like it was setting the stage for something bigger in the next movie.

Jared Leto is still attached to star in Tron: Ares, and Disney has been talking with Joachim Rønning (Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales) to direct. A report from earlier in the year claimed that production was looking to get underway in Vancouver this August, but we haven’t heard all that much since.

Jared Leto gave an update about the project last year. “I’m a super fan of Tron, and we are working hard on Tron with our incredible partners at Disney,” Leto said. “Just an amazing group of creative people. We’re getting closer. We’re getting closer and closer, and who knows? Something may be [coming] sooner than later.

Cillian Murphy will next be seen starring as J. Robert Oppenheimer in Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer, which opens in theaters on July 21st. Would you like to see Cillian Murphy return for Tron: Ares?

It’s been well over a decade since Tron: Legacy‘s release, but the franchise’s next installment may finally be inching closer. Deadline has reported that Disney is in early negotiations with Joachim Rønning to helm Tron: Ares, the long-in-development sequel starring Jared Leto.

It’s still early days, but Deadline’s report states that the Tron sequel is assembling its crew and is considering an August start date in Vancouver. The script for Tron: Ares has been penned by Jesse Wigutow, and if Joachim Rønning signs on, it will be his fourth collaboration with the House of Mouse after Maleficent: Mistress of Evil, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, and the upcoming Young Woman and the Sea starring Daisy Ridley.

Of course, this isn’t the first time that the Tron sequel has been close to happening. Even before the release of Tron: Legacy, a third film was in the early stages of development. Disney later greenlit the project with Tron: Legacy director Joseph Kosinski set to direct and Garret Hedlund and Olivia Wilde returning, but in 2015, they pulled the plug.

It was previously reported that Garth Davis (Lion) would direct the Tron sequel, but now that Disney is talking with Rønning, it would seem Davis is out. Jared Leto has been attached to the project for many years, and he gave an update about the project last year. “I’m a super fan of Tron, and we are working hard on Tron with our incredible partners at Disney,” Leto said. “Just an amazing group of creative people. We’re getting closer. We’re getting closer and closer, and who knows? Something may be [coming] sooner than later.” As Tron fans have been burned before, it’s hard to get too excited about the new sequel until it’s actually shooting, but I’ll admit to being cautiously optimistic.

What are you hoping to see from Disney’s new Tron sequel?

Last month, we heard a rumor that a new TRON film was finally moving forward at Disney. (You can watch the original TRON at THIS LINK, and the sequel TRON: LEGACY is HERE.) Now that rumor has proven to be accurate – while the project still doesn't have an official greenlight, it has taken a major step toward getting one, as Disney has hired Garth Davis to direct the film. Davis previously directed the films MARY MAGDALENE and LION, which earned multiple Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture. Although he has never made anything on the scale of TRON, he aggressively pursued the job and was eventually able to win over the executives.

Jared Leto has been attached to star in this TRON film since 2017, and when the Davis news was announced Leto took to his social media to say,

I am so very excited and proud to confirm that YES – I will be starring in TRON.

I’m struck with such gratitude for the opportunity to bring this movie to life, especially as both the original video game and the film affected me so deeply as a young child. The fact that I get to be a part of this new chapter is mind-blowing.

We will work as hard as we possibly can to create something that I hope you all will love. We have some very special ideas in store for you all.

See you in the grid!

Eagle-eyed fans caught that Leto originally announced that he would be starring in TRON: ARES, but quickly deleted that message and re-posted it without the ARES subtitle. Word that Leto would be playing a character named Ares in the new TRON movie has been going around ever since he signed on three years ago, which is interesting because this Ares character was introduced in the script for TRON: ASCENSION, a sequel that TRON: LEGACY director Joseph Kosinski was going to helm. Disney scrapped TRON: ASCENSION when their movie TOMORROWLAND underperformed, but somehow this Ares character has survived and is still making his way toward the screen.

Jesse Wigutow has written the most recent screenplay for TRON: ARES / TRON 3 / TRON, whatever they end up calling it. In addition to starring in the film, Leto will also be producing it with Justin Springer and Emma Ludbrook.

Assuming it gets a greenlight, of course.
