It’s that time of the year when studios release their big Summer blockbusters, hoping to rake in the dough. But with large tentpole releases struggling, there seems to be a shift in the kinds of films we’re getting. Sure, we’re still getting our usual slew of Superhero fare, but the horror genre has never looked better. Horror has been such a proven commodity that it feels like we have more summer horror releases than ever before. And I can’t blame studios as horror has been a consistent moneymaker, usually for pretty cheap. So let’s parse through all the releases, and see which are worth a trip to the theater for. And a recent trailer may have dropped one off this list. Proving that not all trailers help build anticipation: some kill it completely.

Now let’s get into our 10 most anticipated horror movies of Summer 2025.

Clown in a Cornfield – May 9th

Based on the book series of the same name, you’re either down for a film called “Clown in a Cornfield” or you’ve already started scrolling. It’s a pretty basic concept about Frendo the Clown taking out teenagers in a midwestern town. Chris Bumbray reviewed this a few months ago, and I was lucky enough to see it already as well, and it’s an absolute blast. This is a slasher that general audiences can really latch onto. Slasherheads needs to go in with reasonable expectations, though, as it’s rather tame overall.

Final Destination: Bloodlines – May 16th

After 13 long years, the Final Destination series finally returns! Everything that’s come out so far makes it look like they’re flipping the formula on its head and changing some rules, so I’m going into this a bit more trepidatious than others. I’m a massive fan of the franchise (as evidenced by all the videos I’ve done on it on our Horror YouTube Channel) and just hope it gets a proper return that doesn’t ruin the films that came before it. I’m grateful to get a big screen send off for Tony Todd.

Bring Her Back – May 30th

The creators of Talk To Me are back with their follow-up film, and it already has the internet abuzz. With a unique marketing campaign and an absolutely stellar leading lady in Sally Hawkins, this horror film takes a look at a brother and sister, and the terrifying ritual their foster mother is putting them through. This looks genuinely creepy in a way that few films can achieve. Here’s hoping that the Philippou Brothers pull it off again.

Dangerous Animals – June 6th

This may just be my most anticipated film of the entire summer. A serial killer that uses sharks to kill his victims? Sign me right the fuck up! Jai Courtney and Hassie Harrison star in this gripping thriller about a surfer kidnapped by a deranged psychopath and tied up on his boat. She has to escape before being fed to the hungry sharks around the boat. I adore any kind of shark thriller as they tend to be really entertaining, even if the quality is questionable (we’ll get into that later). The FX work looks great here and it looks to have a great grasp on how to utilize the sharks without them looking fake and cheap.

28 Years Later – June 20th

Danny Boyle returns to the franchise (I guess we can call it that now) that he helped create. As the title states, this is set 28 years after the original film and its outbreak, zeroing in on a small island, separated from the infection. A father (Aaron Taylor Johnson) and his son leave the safeties of the island for some sort of…manhood ritual? That’s what the trailers make it seem like. Not much longer till we find out for sure, but it sounds like we won’t see Cillian Murphy showing up in this planned trilogy until at least the second film, as he’s been confirmed to not be in this one.

M3GaN 2.0 – June 27th

This is only here because of you people, and I am absolutely dreading it. This trailer plays before damn near every single movie that I see and it has become the bane of my existence. I hated the first film and can’t stand this “wink at the camera” style of filmmaking. The fact that they’re going the T2 route, having M-3-gen (sound it out) become a hero to take down a more advanced version just has me yawning. Here’s hoping the TikTok dance was worth our cinematic integrity.

Together – August 1st

Husband/Wife duo Dave Franco and Alison Brie star in this horror film that I’ve honestly been staying away from, ever since I heard it has body horror. So let’s look at what the brief description says: “After moving to the countryside, a supernatural encounter starts to transform a couple’s love, their lives, and their flesh.” Sign me right up.

Weapons – August 8th

Steeped in mystery, Weapons definitely has one of the best marketing campaigns of any of the films on this list. We recently got an awesome trailer, and we still know very little, just that a bunch of kids in Julia Garner’s class disappeared in the middle of the night, and it looks like the town is blaming her. This is one of the most highly anticipated films of the summer and for good reason: Zach Cregger is proving to be a formidable name in the world of horror.

The Toxic Avenger – August 29th

After what feels like eternity of waiting, we’re finally getting to see Peter Dinklage as Toxie in this reboot of the cult classic. Co-starring Kevin Bacon and Elijah Wood, Macon Blair’s remake transforms a downtrodden janitor into a gross and grimey superhero. People who have seen it seem to love it, and the trailer looks like the same kind of fun we got from the Street Trash remake last year.

The Shallows (2025) – ????

Everyone remembers the Blake Lively movie from 2016 right? It was a pretty decent shark thriller that left a decent impression on folks. So I’m sure none of us expected China to remake it, and give it a Groundhog’s Day-style twist, with the shark killing our protagonist over and over again. But that’s exactly what they did and it looks absolutely glorious. This is the only film on the list without its release date officially announced but come on: like they’re not going to release a shark movie in the summer?! Keep your eyes here on JoBlo.com for the eventual release announcement and review.

Barbarian (watch it HERE) writer/director Zach Cregger has assembled a strong cast for his mysterious horror project called Weapons, including Julia Garner (Ozark), Josh Brolin (No Country for Old Men), Alden Ehrenreich (Solo), Benedict Wong (Doctor Strange), Amy Madigan (Antlers), Austin Abrams (Euphoria), June Diane Raphael (Grace and Frankie), and Cary Christopher (Days of Our Lives)… and we’re going to have the chance to see that cast face the horrors Cregger has conjured up when Weapons reaches theatres on August 8th. Yesterday, some new images from the film made their way online, followed by two hours of security cam footage. Now, Warner Bros. has released a creepy full trailer for the film, and you can check it out in the embed above.

Most details about Weapons are shrouded in mystery. It has been said that it’s “an interrelated, multistory horror epic” that’s tonally in the vein of Paul Thomas Anderson’s Magnolia, and the story revolves around the disappearance of elementary school kids in a small town. Here’s the official synopsis: When all but one child from the same class mysteriously vanish on the same night at exactly the same time, a community is left questioning who or what is behind their disappearance.

Cregger, who wrote the script without an outline and let the story evolve as he went, told Entertainment Weekly that the mystery of the missing children “is going to propel you through at least half of the movie, but that is not the movie. The movie will fork and change and reinvent and go in new places. It doesn’t abandon that question, believe me, but that’s not the whole movie at all. By the midpoint, we’ve moved on to way crazier s— than that.

He shared that Garner’s character is Justine Gandy, “a teacher at Maybrook Elementary who shows up to work one morning to find her entire class — except one student — is missing. Security footage taken from neighboring homes shows the absent kids fleeing into the darkness in the dead of night, all running with their arms outstretched in the same rigid formation.” Brolin’s character is Archer Graff, “the father of one of the missing, who finds it suspicious that only children from Justine’s class disappeared.” Ehrenreich “sports a mustache as a local police officer with a very complicated relationship to Mrs. Gandy.”

Cregger produced the film with Roy Lee and Miri Yoon of Vertigo and J.D. Lifshitz and Raphael Margules of BoulderLight Pictures. At one point, Pedro Pascal of The Last of Us was set to star in the film with and Renate Reinsve of The Worst Person in the World. Pascal had to leave the project so he could star in the Marvel Cinematic Universe reboot of Fantastic Four (which Garner also has a role in) instead, and it appears that Reinsve followed him out the door.

With that date swiftly approaching, Warner Bros is getting creative with their marketing. Indeed, they’ve just posted over two hours of creepy security camera footage tied into the film’s central premise, being that in the middle of the night, a bunch of suburban kids walked out of their homes into the night and were never seen again. Cregger has shared a few new images with Entertainment Weekly and revealed some character details! The images can be seen at the bottom of this article.

Most details about Weapons are shrouded in mystery. It has been said that it’s “an interrelated, multistory horror epic” that’s tonally in the vein of Paul Thomas Anderson’s Magnolia, and the story revolves around the disappearance of elementary school kids in a small town.

Gandy.” Cregger noted that Magnolia influenced his new movie in a lot of ways, with Ehrenreich’s mustache being a tribute to John C. Reilly’s mustache in Magnolia. Other similarities: “It’s melancholy, yet it has comedic situations. The sky is regularly cloudy, yet the scenes are colorful. It’s a sprawling ensemble, but the characters are fully developed in their own worlds.” Cregger said, “I just like that kind of unapologetic, ‘This is an epic.’ I love that movie. I love that kind of bold scale. It gave me permission when I was writing this to shoot for the stars and make it an epic. I wanted a horror epic, and so I tried to do that.” Because he was shooting for the stars, Weapons is bigger, weirder, twistier, and more creatively ambitious than Barbarian.

New Line Cinema went all-in on a partnership with Cregger and Barbarian’s producers at BoulderLight Pictures. New Line came out the winner in a bidding war over Weapons, paying Cregger a sum in the eight figure range to make this movie. When they won the bidding war over the rights, New Line’s president and CCO Richard Brener released the following statement: “Zach proved with Barbarian that he can create a visceral theatrical experience for audiences and that he commands every tool in the filmmaker toolbelt. We couldn’t be happier that he, Roy [Lee] and Miri [Yoon], and J.D. [Lifshitz]and Rafi [Margules] chose New Line to be the home of his next film, and hope it is the first of many to come.

Weapons has been rated R for strong bloody violence and grisly images, language throughout, some sexual content and drug use. Are you looking forward to the movie? Check out the images below, then let us know by leaving a comment.

Someone gives the Pied Piper a run for his money in today’s teaser trailer for Weapons. The latest film from the director of 2022’s Barbarian remains shrouded in mystery, though new footage from the upcoming horror film offers a few breadcrumbs. Zach Cregger shocked the horror community in 2022 with Barbarian, an experience that’s better if you go into it knowing as little as possible. Barbarian captured the hearts of horror fans with its dank atmosphere, powerful performances, and twisted premise. Can Cregger set cinemas ablaze with his sophomore effort? We’ll find out when the film comes to theaters on August 8.

In Zack Cregger’s Weapons teaser, an unknown interviewer speaks with a troubled father named Mr. Graff about a mysterious phenomenon involving kids disappearing in the middle of the night. With no explanation, kids ran from their homes at roughly 2:17 am. No one forced them or pulled them from safety. They just left, arms out to their sides, into the black of night.

It has been said that it’s “an interrelated, multistory horror epic” that’s tonally in the vein of Paul Thomas Anderson’s Magnolia, and The Hollywood Reporter adds that the story revolves around the disappearance of high schoolers in a small town. Those disappearances are the focus of the Maybrook Missing website, which shares the following fictional news report –

17 Local Children Leave Home Simultaneously at 2:17 am: A chilling mystery has gripped the small town of Maybrook after 17 children voluntarily left their homes Wednesday morning. Authorities are baffled by the inexplicable disappearance, which has shaken the community to its core. Upon investigation, front door camera footage showed the children leaving their homes at 2:17 am Wednesday morning without any signs of force. Since then, little information has surfaced, and the case continues to baffle investigators. In response, a school gathering was held, where growing unease among parents became clear. As the town struggles to understand what happened, officials continue to urge the public for any leads, while Maybrook is left waiting for answers.

Warner Bros. has plenty of horror offerings on its slate and showcased a few of them during its presentation at CinemaCon, including Maggie Gyllenhaalʼs The Bride.

Audiences were treated to a teaser trailer for The Bride, which star Jessie Buckley (who plays the titular character) described as “the punkest love that’s ever existed.” Think Bonnie and Clyde, Wild at Heart, Sid & Nancy, and Natural Born Killers. The teaser finds Buckley’s character being horrifically murdered, but she’s later reanimated and meets Christian Bale as Frankenstein’s monster. The pair set out to avenge her murder and become fugitives.

Warner Bros, CinemaCon, The Bride, Mortal Kombat II

Gyllenhaal said she was looking for something “pop and big” and “radical” for her next project. She encountered a man at a party with a Bride of Frankenstein tattoo on his arm. “It hooked me and I went home and watched the movie,” she said. “The bride is in the movie for about three minutes and she doesn’t speak which could not be more different than our bride.

All of us have a little aspect of something monstrous in us, which is why we love monster movies, probably,” she continued. “You can run from it your entire life or you can shake hands with it… The monsters in our movie do monstrous things…but they’re also our heroes.” In the film, Frankenstein’s monster is a lover of movies, and Gyllenhaal shot the film in IMAX.

We also saw a clip from Final Destination: Bloodlines, which our own Chris Bumbray said looked like a blast. If you’d like to stay completely unspoiled, I recommend refraining from reading the clip’s description.

It features two brothers who are arguing in a hospital about the best way to cheat death, either by killing someone else or killing themselves by flatlining and resituating. One brother has a peanut allergy, so he decides to buy some peanut butter cups at the vending machine. It gets stuck, they try to tip the machine, it almost falls on them, but doesn’t. In another room, an MRI machine turns on and gruesomely pulls the piercings from one of the brother’s nose, chest, and ears. The other brother starts to have a reaction to the peanut butter cups, and… well, it doesn’t turn out well for them.

There was also a sizzle reel for Mortal Kombat II, which ends with Karl Urban’s Johnny Cage exclaiming, “I’m Johnny f***ing Cage!” New Line chief Richard Brenner, who introduced the movie, added that we should “Expect amazing fights, epic battles and a few fatalities.” The film is set to hit theaters on October 24th.

Another movie hitting WB’s CinemaCon stage is Weapons from Barbarian director Zach Cregger. The mysterious film stars Julie Garner and Josh Brolin. The CinemaCon crowd saw an early trailer for the film. As it unravels, it constantly reinvents itself. The teaser is exclusive to CinemaCon and will not be released to the public.

The film is set in a small town where a classroom of children taught by Julia Garner vanishes. All the kids woke up the night before, walked into the dark, and never returned. Brolin is a father in the film, and people think he’s somehow involved with the children vanishing. Nightmares of the child haunt Garner’s character. As folks said, Weapons is like a horror version of Magnolia. The preview for Weapons has some striking imagery and was filmed in IMAX.

With that date not far off, the Motion Picture Association’s ratings board has had their screening and have decided to give the film an R rating! Weapons has been rated R for strong bloody violence and grisly images, language throughout, some sexual content and drug use.

Most details about Weapons are shrouded in mystery.

Barbarian (watch it HERE) writer/director Zach Cregger has assembled a strong cast for his mysterious horror project called Weapons, including Julia Garner (Ozark), Josh Brolin (No Country for Old Men), Alden Ehrenreich (Solo), Benedict Wong (Doctor Strange), Amy Madigan (Antlers), Austin Abrams (Euphoria), June Diane Raphael (Grace and Frankie), and Cary Christopher (Days of Our Lives)… and during an interview with Collider, Garner said that we should not expect Weapons to be “a proper horror movie.”

Most details about Weapons are shrouded in mystery. It has been said that it’s “an interrelated, multistory horror epic” that’s tonally in the vein of Paul Thomas Anderson’s Magnolia, and The Hollywood Reporter adds that the story revolves around the disappearance of high schoolers in a small town.

Cregger wrote the Weapons screenplay (which Brolin has said had “a really brilliant design”) and is directing the film. He’s also producing it with Roy Lee and Miri Yoon of Vertigo and J.D.

New Line Cinema went all-in on a partnership with Cregger and Barbarian’s producers at BoulderLight Pictures. New Line came out the winner in a bidding war over Weapons, which they’re planning to give a theatrical release date on January 16, 2026 (but they might end up moving it into 2025).

New Line Cinema is paying Cregger a sum in the eight figure range to make this movie.

When the subject of Weapons came up, Garner told Collider, “It’s not a proper horror movie. It feels very Zach Cregger in that element. There are some comedic elements to it. Barbarian felt like that as well.” It’s not clear what Garner considers to be “a proper horror movie,” but she does have some genre experience, as her credits include the Rosemary’s Baby prequel Apartment 7A and the Wolf Man reboot that reaches theatres this weekend.

Are you looking forward to Weapons, whether or not Julia Garner believes it’s “a proper horror movie”? Let us know by leaving a comment below.

June Diane Raphael

A couple of months ago, it was announced that June Diane Raphael, who may be best known for playing the character Brianna Hanson for the 94 episodes that make up the Netflix series Grace and Frankie, which ran for seven seasons, is set to star in a TV series reimagining of the classic sitcom Bewitched for Sony Pictures Television. It has also been revealed (via Deadline) that Raphael has been cast in the mysterious horror project called Weapons, the new film from Barbarian (watch it HERE) writer/director Zach Cregger.

Details on the character Raphael will be playing haven’t been revealed, but we do know she’ll be sharing the screen with Josh Brolin (No Country for Old Men), Julia Garner (Ozark), Alden Ehrenreich (Solo), Benedict Wong (Doctor Strange), Amy Madigan (Antlers), Austin Abrams (Euphoria), and Cary Christopher (Days of Our Lives). In addition to working with them on Weapons, New Line signed a first look deal with BoulderLight Pictures, tasking the company with developing high concept genre projects for them, and they gave a greenlight to the sci-fi thriller Companion, produced by BoulderLight and Cregger. That film will be reaching theatres a full year ahead of Weapons.

While that superhero movie is set to reach theatres on July 25, 2025, New Line has announced (via Deadline) that Weapons has been given a theatrical release date of January 16, 2026!

We’ve never heard why Reinsve followed Pascal off the project, but we do know that the cast currently consists of Josh Brolin (No Country for Old Men), Julia Garner (Ozark), Alden Ehrenreich (Solo), Benedict Wong (Doctor Strange), Amy Madigan (Antlers), Austin Abrams (Euphoria), and Cary Christopher (Days of Our Lives).

Now The Hollywood Reporter has shared the news that Brolin is being joined in the cast by Julia Garner, who is best known for her work on the series Ozark (for which she won three Emmy awards).

Garner is currently in production on the Wolf Man reboot that’s coming from Universal and Blumhouse, and she stars in the Platinum Dunes thriller Apartment 7A (which may or may not be a prequel to Rosemary’s Baby), a project that has been in post-production since 2022. She was also recently cast to play a female Silver Surfer in Fantastic Four alongside Pedro Pascal. Clearly her Silver Surfer has a very different shooting schedule than Pascal’s Reed Richards, which is understandable. She’s sure to have a lot less screen time.

When Pascal was still attached to Weapons, it was announced that he would be joined in the cast by Renate Reinsve, who starred in the Oscar-nominated film The Worst Person in the World. It’s not clear if Reinsve is still involved in the project or if she moved on when Pascal did. She’s not being mentioned in reports of Garner’s casting.

The fact that Pascal is no longer involved with Weapons has been confirmed by The Hollywood Reporter – and they’ve also revealed that he might be replaced by Dune, Avengers: Infinity War, and No Country for Old Men star Josh Brolin! A deal hasn’t been closed yet, but Brolin is in talks.

We never got any details on the character Pascal would have been playing, and now Brolin will hopefully be playing, in Weapons. In fact, most details about the project are shrouded in mystery. It has been said that it’s “an interrelated, multistory horror epic” that’s tonally in the vein of Paul Thomas Anderson’s Magnolia, and The Hollywood Reporter adds that the story revolves around the disappearance of high schoolers in a small town.

Weapons was originally supposed to start filming last fall. If it had, Pascal would have been able to stick with it. But production was delayed due to the strikes that hit Hollywood last year.

Cregger wrote the Weapons screenplay and will be directing the film. He’s also producing it with Roy Lee and Miri Yoon of Vertigo and J.D. Lifshitz and Raphael Margules of BoulderLight Pictures.

We previously heard that Renate Reinsve, who starred in the Oscar-nominated film The Worst Person in the World, would be in this film as well. It’s not clear if she’s still attached.

Last year, New Line Cinema went all-in on a partnership with Barbarian (watch it HERE) writer/director Zach Cregger and the film’s producers at BoulderLight Pictures. New Line came out the winner in a bidding war over Cregger’s next film, a mysterious horror project called Weapons. They signed a first look deal with BoulderLight Pictures, tasking the company with developing high concept genre projects for them. And they gave a greenlight to the thriller Companion, produced by BoulderLight and Cregger. In May, it was announced that Pedro Pascal of The Last of Us had signed on to star in Weapons… and six months later, it was reported that Pascal was also in talks to play Reed Richards in Marvel’s new attempt at bringing the Fantastic Four to the big screen. According to entertainment industry scooper Jeff Sneider, the shooting schedules for those projects are now conflicting, so Pascal has had to drop out of Weapons so he can focus on becoming Mister Fantastic.

On his site The InSneider, Sneider wrote, “Pedro Pascal has been forced to drop out of Zach Cregger’s Weapons due to his busy schedule, according to multiple sources. As previously reported, Pascal — whose arm is currently in a sling — is due to report to the Season 2 set of HBO’s The Last of Us in February.” At one point, Pascal was then expecting to head into production on Fantastic Four in April, but the start date for that one has since shifted into the third quarter of the year. And Weapons has supposedly been removed from his schedule completely.

We never got any details on the character Pascal would have been playing in Weapons.

Cregger wrote the Weapons screenplay and will be directing the film. He’s also producing it with Roy Lee and Miri Yoon of Vertigo and J.D. Lifshitz and Raphael Margules of BoulderLight Pictures.

Even if Pascal is no longer involved, Cregger does still have a previously announced cast member attached to the project: Renate Reinsve, who starred in the Oscar-nominated film The Worst Person in the World, signed on a couple weeks after Pascal did.

New Line Cinema is paying Cregger a sum in the eight figure range to make this movie.

At the start of this year, New Line Cinema went all-in on a partnership with Barbarian (watch it HERE) writer/director Zach Cregger and the film’s producers at BoulderLight Pictures. A couple weeks ago, we learned that Pedro Pascal (The Last of Us) is going to star in Weapons – and now The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed that he’ll be joined in the cast by Renate Reinsve, who starred in the Oscar-nominated film The Worst Person in the World.

Details on the characters Pascal and Reinsve will be playing are being kept under wraps. In fact, most details about Weapons are shrouded in mystery. It has been said that it’s “an interrelated, multistory horror epic” that’s tonally in the vein of Paul Thomas Anderson’s Magnolia, and The Hollywood Reporter adds that the story revolves around the disappearance of high schoolers in a small town.

Cregger wrote the Weapons screenplay and will be directing the film. He’s also producing it with Roy Lee and Miri Yoon of Vertigo and J.D. Lifshitz and Raphael Margules of BoulderLight Pictures.

New Line Cinema is paying Cregger a sum in the eight figure range to make this movie.

Are you a fan of Barbarian, and are you looking forward to seeing what Cregger is going to do with Weapons? Are you glad Pedro Pascal and Renate Reinsve have been cast in the project? Share your thoughts on this one by leaving a comment below.

Weapons, Zach Cregger, Barbarian, New Line

After wowing audiences with the cult horror smash Barbarian, filmmaker Zach Cregger is quickly becoming one of the hottest tickets in Hollywood. Executives in Tinseltown have been foaming at the mouth for a chance to lay claim to Cregger’s next project, with offers hitting as high as eight figures before the concept hit the open market. Word around the watercooler suggests executives were knocking down Cregger’s door for a taste of his next project, but he was unwilling to give up the goods. Until now. On January 22, Zach Cregger unveiled Weapons, a mysterious new project he knew would fight tooth and nail to acquire. After the bidding fired off, New Line became the victor of the spoils.

Sources indicate Cregger will collect eight figures to write and direct Weapons, an amount often unheard of for a filmmaker with essentially one hit under his belt. In addition to giving Cregger a guaranteed green light, he’s overseeing the film’s final cut, provided test screenings meet expectations. The deal also comes with a theatrical release, forgoing plans to port the project to a streaming service.

“Zach proved with Barbarian that he can create a visceral theatrical experience for audiences and that he commands every tool in the filmmaker toolbelt,” said New Line’s president and CCO, Richard Brener. “We couldn’t be happier that he, Roy [Lee] and Miri [Yoon], and J.D. [Lifshitz]and Rafi [Margules] chose New Line to be the home of his next film, and hope it is the first of many to come.”

As long as Weapons is another hit, New Line is banking on Cregger becoming a golden goose of the horror genre. In other words, if Weapons fires on all cylinders, Cregger could become another prominent name in horror akin to James Wan, Jason Blum, Mike Flanagan, or Jordan Peele. Does that plan sound ambitious? You bet your ass it does. Still, if Cregger plays his cards right and churns out another hit, he could sit pretty among contemporary horror royalty.

Plot details for Weapons remain a mystery. However, sources close to the project say it’s tonally in the vein of Paul Thomas Anderson’s Magnolia, but, you know, there is no pressure or anything, Zach.

What do you think about studios tripping over themselves to load up on Weapons? Do you believe Cregger is in for another hit, or will he be smacked with a sophomore slump? Feel free to let us know in the comments.
