Paramount Pictures has just released the newest trailer for the animated/live-action crossover adventure. The studio that brought us the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise will tap into another nostalgic property this July with Smurfs, an animated adventure based on characters created by Belgian comic artist Peyo. Paramount Animation brings this film in association with Domain Entertainment. The movie is also a Ty Ty and Jay Brown production.

Rihanna joins the village as the new voice of Smurfette, as well as contributing to the soundtrack of the movie with her new song, “Friend of Mine,” which can be found on the soundtrack that’s out Friday — you can check it out HERE. Smurfs combines the style of the classic Saturday morning cartoons with more modern 3D animation. Smurf Village is devastated when a mysterious force abducts Papa Smurf and it’s up to a small group of ragtag Smurfs to get him back. The movie looks to travel into the live-action world in the pursuit to get Papa Smurf back and a fish-out-of-water adventure is now in the books.

Chris Miller (Puss in BootsShrek the Third) directs Smurfs from a screenplay by Pam Brady (Hot RodTeam America: World PoliceLady Dynamite). The Smurfs cast is positively stacked, with Rihanna voicing Smurfette alongside Nick Offerman, JP Karliak, Daniel Levy, Amy Sedaris, Natasha Lyonne, Sandra Oh, Octavia Spencer, Nick Kroll, Hannah Waddingham, Alex Winter, Billie Lourd, Xolo Maridueña, and James Corden, with Kurt Russell and John Goodman. The film’s producers are Jay Brown, Ty Ty Smith, Robyn Rihanna Fenty, and Ryan Harris.

Previous Smurfs movies include 2011’s The SmurfsThe Smurfs 2, and Smurfs: The Lost Village. The Smurfs are a group of small blue humanoid creatures living in a mushroom village at the center of the woods. Led by Papa Smurf, the Smurfs spend their days adventuring, expanding their village home, and matching wits with a crotchety dark wizard, Gargamel, and his fiendishly clever cat, Azrael. The Smurfs were created for Belgian comics by Peyo before becoming a popular animated cartoon series in the 1980s.

Smurfs comes to theaters this summer on July 18, 2025.

Paramount Animation wants to start the weekend by adding some pep to your step with the first single, “Higher Love,” from the forthcoming Smurfs movie. The joyous track hails from Desi Trill and features DJ Khaled, Cardi B, Natania, and Subhi. You can listen to the track by watching the video posted above, which includes new footage of the Smurfs.

Desi Trill is a new genre of music that celebrates South Asian music with an emphasis on collaborations with other artists. “Higher Love” begins with a spin on Belinda Carlisle’s 1987 hit “Heaven Is a Place on Earth” before rolling into fresh lyrics and beats from Cardi B, Natania, and Subhi. The lyric video features the Smurfs mugging for the camera and getting into mischief. It also features fuzzy creatures similar to the Kakamora from Disney’s Moana movies.

“I’m excited to be a part of this iconic collaboration,” said DJ Khaled. “Growing up I remember always watching the Smurfs. It feels like a full circle moment now having children of my own who watch the Smurfs as well, and I get to be a part of the soundtrack. I’m excited to work alongside Cardi B, Natania & Subhi on “Higher Love” for this monumental movie soundtrack. It’s inspiring and looking forward to sharing our music with the world.”

“Higher Love is magnetic energy about knowing and celebrating what you bring to the table; it’s self-belief and confidence in who you truly are and wanting to share that frequency with the world,” Natania added. “I’m so excited to be a part of putting out something so joyful into the universe, representing my roots and my culture alongside such incredible artists.”

“I’m incredibly grateful and beyond excited to be part of this global soundtrack alongside such amazing artists – DESI TRILL, Cardi B, DJ Khaled, & Natania,” said Subhi. “It’s an honor to bring my Punjabi roots to this celebratory track and represent my Indian heritage on such a big stage. Music is a universal language, and I can’t wait for the world to experience the energy and joy we’ve created together!”

THE SMURFS are the inexplicably popular cast of characters known for their blue skin, single identifiable characteristic and name (Brainy Smurf is smart, Papa Smurf is old, Smurfette is the girl), and the fact they say "Smurf" all the mothersm*rfing time!

Anyway, because there is no God, THE SMURFS are now getting a new film. Their new adventure, with the subtitle THE LOST VILLAGE, will now be completely animated (instead of a live-action/animation hybrid) and is apparently a reboot from the 2011 and 2013 films starring Neil Patrick Harris, and the late Jonathan Winters and Anton Yelchin. Originating in 1958 from Belgian comic strips, the Smurfs reached their height of popularity in 1989 with the Saturday Morning cartoon show (which this new film seems to be taking most of its cues).

Anyway, here's a new trailer:

Oof. That…that doesn't look very good. Then again, I never really liked THE SMURFS or the NPH films, so I imagine this might be something only true die-hard fans might enjoy (and if so, good for them!). Hell, I will even concede a part of me is a bit intrigued about the idea of other Smurfs existing and adding to the mythology (though another – larger part – of me couldn't give two shits).

And if for some reason you can't open up YouTube (or are too lazy, or too busy, or would rather gouge your eyes out), here's the offial synopsis:

With the evil wizard Gargamel (Rainn Wilson) hot on their trail, Smurfette (Demi Lovato), Brainy (Danny Pudi), Clumsy (Jack McBrayer) and Hefty (Joe Manganiello) embark on a journey through the Forbidden Forest to find a mysterious village.

That's actually an interesting cast! Especially Danny Pudi as Brainy (being a huge COMMUNITY fan) and Jack McBrayer as Clumsy (being a 30 ROCK and WRECK-IT RALPH fan). Then again, so did the first series of films with Frank Armisen and the aforementioned NPH and Jonathan Winters (and I actually really enjoyed Hank Azaria's take on Gargamel, so sue me), and we saw how that turned out.

So any fans of SMURFS out there? And what do you think of the new film? Sound off below!

SMURFS: THE LOST VILLAGE will be Smurfing into theaters April 7th, 2017.

Did you know that today is Global Smurfs Day? I'm not even smurfin' around with you. Global Smurfs Day was a worldwide event held on June 25, 2011 to celebrate the release of The Smurfs movie. Evidently some people dressed up and . . . well, that's pretty much it. I'm not sure what you're supposed to do on that day, but I guess announcements are a big deal. Smurf Day 2015 will forever (yeah) be remember as the day GET SMURFY was announced. That's right! A brand new completed (computer) animated Smurf movie featuring the acting talents of Rainn Wilson as Gargamel, Mandy Patinkin as Papa Smurf and Demo Lovato as Smurfette. Oh boy.

Every show or movie has its die-hard fans, so you gotta wonder how many die-hard Smurf fans are out there right now, just like, "F*cking' yes!" after hearing this news. Maybe not. I can't say I was all that much into Smurfs, even as a kid, but given I'm not the  target demographic, what do I know? At least Rainn Wilson seems to be having some fun with this.

GET SMURFY will be released in the Spring of 2017.

smurfs-katy-perryKaty Perry voiced Smurfette in the live-action flicks. I don't know why, but I miss her.

Welcome to “Where on the Shelf Is…” In this column, I look at great TV shows and movies that have never been on DVD and/or Blu-ray. For your pleasure and out of all of our frustrations, this column examines the Where, When and, of course, WHY?! of these non-releases.

Up this week is…CARTOON ALL-STARS TO THE RESCUE

What Is It?:

ALF, Kermit the Frog, Bugs Bunny, Winnie the Pooh, and Slimer have two things in common: 1) They were sexual icons of their day, and 2) They wanted you to never do drugs.

In 1990, CARTOON ALL-STARS TO THE RESCUE aired simultaneously on ABC, CBS, Fox, NBC, and a number of other networks. The 27-minute anti-drug special told of a teenager named Michael, who has taken to marijuana (which he funds by stealing from his younger sister’s piggy bank) and beer (which he steals from his old man).

Under constant pressure from a talking cloud of smoke named, uh, Smoke (voiced by none other than George C. Scott), Michael has no way out of the slippery slope…until a smorgasbord of animated characters–which (in addition to the aforementioned) include the Smurfs, the Chipmunks, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and Huey, Dewey and Louie–enter the picture. (Apparently Michael had turned to acid, as well.)

The PSA was funded by McDonald’s and Ronald McDonald’s Children Charities, who clearly saw Happy Meals as a better alternative to a joint.

Where Is It?:

If you grew up in the ’90s, your health teacher more than likely used CARTOON ALL-STARS TO THE RESCUE as an instructional tool–assuming they could work a VCR. It also screened in several countries, including Australia, Mexico and Poland, who didn’t get CARTOON ALL-STARS until 1998, a full decade after ALF: THE ANIMATED SERIES went off the air.

As far as home video, CARTOON ALL-STARS never made it past VHS, although that version (released by Buena Vista Home Entertainment) did feature an introduction by then-president George H.W. Bush and his wife, Barbara, who was originally cast as Smoke.

The reason for this has to do with copyright laws. A number of studios came together for CARTOON ALL-STARS in the name of teenage sobriety, including Disney, Warner Bros., Columbia, Fox, Hanna-Barbera, and DiC. Unfortunately, this was something of a one time only affair and the odds of any of the companies joining forces to get a DVD in order are slim.

When Will We See It?:

Another issue is that the majority of the properties featured in CARTOON ALL-STARS TO THE RESCUE are being revamped for modern audiences. The Muppets have a “second” feature due out next year; the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are being Michael Bay-ized; Alvin and his brothers are computer-generated hip-hop enthusiasts; The Smurfs are computer-generated Neil Patrick Harris enthusiasts; there’s always the chance of another Ghostbusters adventure; and there’s even been talk of another DUCKTALES video game.

Disney, Fox, Warner Bros., and the rest of the studios have no time or reason to drop their moneymaking plans just to bother with a forgotten and outdated TV special. In other words, they could care less whether Michael has taken to luring club girls with ecstasy or selling black tar heroin sandwiches at the Jersey Shore.

Where Can We See It?:

YouTube has nostalgics covered, as they host several versions of CARTOON ALL-STARS TO THE RESCUE.

For those that want to own a physical copy of the movie, the VHS is available on Amazon for the perfectly reasonable price of $69.99.

And now, George H.W. Bush throwing up:

Well, I didn’t see this coming. The latest television series to get the big screen treatment will be…MANIMAL?

MANIMAL was an NBC series from the 80s that was cancelled after only eight episodes. The show followed Dr Jonathan Chase, a shape-shifter who could turn himself into any animal he chose, and used this ability to help fight crime. Only two people were aware of Jonathan’s secret, his friend Ty Earl and Police Detective Brooke Mackenzie. Jonathan and Ty would assist Brooke with a case she was working on, with Jonathan transforming himself into an animal when it became useful.

Despite the ability to transform into any animal, Chase would become a panther or a hawk in every episode. Most of the transformations took place off-screen, but when they were shown, the effects were designed by the great Stan Winston. The shows was produced by Glen A. Larson (Magnum P.I., Knight Rider, Battlestar Galactica) who is also producing the feature film.

The movie is coming courtesy of Sony Pictures Animation. Sony knows cheesy CGI/live action films seeing as they are the home of THE SMURFS. SPA also has a live action/animated ALF in development along with THE SMURFS 2. Sony is currently looking for screenwriters for MANIMAL. I would assume they would not be going for a serious tone for the MANIMAL movie, but you never know.
